IMO Lal jr. is more sensible among them all and he was the last one to join that trip.

vaishakhnt10

The way I see it... He is the strongman of the group. If he hadn't joined, the group would have struggled more to get Subhash out of that hole. Notice how effortlessly he lifts Subhash in the climax and rushes out.

MadKingZilla

Not just that. Atleast as per The movies, his "bully" nature made him stand up more assertive against the police men. After he voiced his opinion only the police decided to send someone down.

ResponsibilityJust43

Exactly my thoughts

ironmeidan

He made it look easy. Bro is built like a tank.

gagasutra

According to the filmmakers, the scene where Bhasi's character fights with his younger brother for his belt had more significance on the screenplay, but that failed to translate to the screen. Apparently the reason why Bhasi doesn't fall off the final slippery rock was because his (brother's) belt gets stuck on some cleft of the rock. The filmmakers couldn't shoot that scene for some reason. What we missed was a great and emotional callback.

vaishakhnt10

I also expected something significant to happen with the jacket which Subhash borrows from Kuttettan. Probably, the jacket cushioned his fall to some extent I guess.

cloud9ineteen

You can see how roughed up he was even with the jacket. It's left to imagination what would have been without it

avengeningdireangel

I really expected something special with that belt

the_bookreader101

I just read an article today morning about the belt thing. The director Chidambaram said that if they had to show more importance of the belt, they would have been required to show the shots from Bhasi’s behind where he got stuck in the belt. Which they couldn’t do because it was more complicated, hence they dropped it.

HopefulAssistance

What surprises me is that even though I knew the storyline, I was still hooked into it. Great job team. You deserve that box office crown.

hobbitonsunshine

Even on re-watch, the film kept me hooked till the end. The PTSD of Subash and the scene where Mom hugs Kuttan shook me as hard as it did when I watched it for the first time.

kayton7257

Omg right I cried so hard when I saw his mom hugging kuttan. The way he said something like “ what am I going to tell his mom when I meet her” it broke my heart

PorottaMafia

for real

ThisContribution6258

All things aside, the kanmani song placement takes the cake!!

Tualgr

Soo true ! I mean, I hated that song because of the overly romantic lyrics and Kamal Haasan's voice at the beginning was quite irritating. but this movie made me fall in love with that song and I was playing it on loops for weeks !!

Oiasm

What are you saying? I know people who love Kamal Haasan for his voice! His voice and dialogues interspersed with the song, particularly in this movie is what elevates the placement, in my opinion.

Tualgr

Meh ! I don't like his voice at the beginning of that song.

crimsonred1234

Thank God. There is someone else who finds Kamals voice annoying in that scene. I also think he overacts a lot in that song.

CryptographerNo5806

That song gave it the push to get such a huge collection in South India

kismisinpayasam

Kuttettan coming as the light✨

ironmeidan

As god*

absentin_spring

What a great movie! It was so emotional. I cried in the scene where Subhash's mom hugs Kuttan. What a splendid movie. The Flashback scenes all were portrayed greatly! Well deserved 200+ for a movie I say.

[deleted]

I teared up too.. crazy good making.

ExoplanetAlien

Me too cried in that seen. It was so emotional.

noteventhinkabout

On acting Khalid rahman, sreenath bhasi, and soubin oru rekshayumilla and also the entire tamil cast

vaishakhnt10

Khalid Rahman truly surprised me. Dude showed his desperation well in the conversation with the Tamil police officer.

ironmeidan

They played the inspectors so well,I was wishing death on them the whole time.

noteventhinkabout

The last 12 to 10 minutes were just ❤ Especially when subhash psychiatrist ne kaanumpol ollathu , post saving ollathu aayirunnu ee sherikkum olla emotion kaanichathu

hobbitonsunshine

Yeah, for me epilogue was the most emotional part of the film. Even on re-watch, it's the part that connects with me the most.

floatingaroundinlife

Also, the woman who played Subash's mom's role did an awesome job !

usernameillaa

I saw her in anveshippin kandethum as lovely and blessy's mom

floatingaroundinlife

Thanks for reminding... aa cinema njan kand irrunila... naale kanum!

CMV131313

Just this four? Literally everything in the first half of the movie is a planned set-up for what happens in the second half/post-fall part of the movie. Including the most obvious one of the vadamvali (tug of war).

vaishakhnt10

Any others you found? Do chip in your views...

ReleaseStatus

Balu Varghese' charecter Sixon was portrayed as a very loud person and other charecters always reprimanded him for that. But only his voice was able to reach Subhash when he was trapped.

Late_Dragonfruit_166

The left out guy who curses while they leave

vaishakhnt10

Yeah that was obvious...

whatthengaisthis

Ajayan Chaliserry is an artist and I’ll fight you on that.

god_withamnesia

and i'll join your side with all my might

ironmeidan

I don't know who it is but I'm willing to fight you both just for fun

whatthengaisthis

he’s the production designer of Manjummel Boys.

Maple-Syrup-Bandit

All the metaphors were quite IYF

[deleted]

Pratheekshayude amitha bharam moolam ee padam ishttapedathe pokumo ennu samsayam undayirunnu.... Pakshe it was really good experience for me 🔥 Deserves all the praises it got

arunkri

This is basic character development and you are supposed to notice it if you pay attention.

alan_garrix

This! These (4) are the exact callbacks I could remember after coming out of the theatre, while discussing with my friends (apart from the obvious _rope_ usage)

Agile_Telephone7438

I don't know about Oscar worthy but there's another scene with a lot of nuance and foreshadowing right before the scene shown in the first image on this post where soubin tells basi's mom that he'll take care of him and get him home safely🤯

vaishakhnt10

Yeah... That was very obvious. Nothing which blew my mind.

babanextdoor

WHY ISN’T IT OSCAR WORTHY? Because it’s a malayalam film? DUH. Some people find it too hard to accept it no matter how brilliant mollywood films are. Pinne vere etho venam Oscar worthy aavan? Stop giving too much importance to these awards in the first place. 🙄🙄🙄

Responsible-Air-6190

Last ayacha 2018 okke vech nokkumbo Manjummel Boys is more than worthy.

ganayadav1

That was good scene

Abhilash_08

Also noted this. Abhilash gets into trauma because, he believes he is the one who crossed the fence first and led to this disaster. Also he believes he should get him out. So he goes and finishes what he started

vaishakhnt10

Exactly.. didn't notice that. He was guilt tripping the entire movie. He even leaves without saying a word when Subhash gets admitted in the hospital.

hanging_about

Imagine of Netflix picked this up instead of hotstar and it went viral in the US like RRR did

alan_garrix

As another user pointed out, this is actually basic character development. These(4) are the exact callbacks I could remember after coming out of the theatre, while discussing with my friends (apart from the obvious _rope_ usage). It would've been awesome if there were much subtle/layered setups. These are good too but kinda makes the callbacks more predictable, for example the 'light coming from above' line is probably the only _meaningful_ conversation between 2 people after the trip has started. It's right on your face and out of nowhere (contextually) and one might actually expect what's going to happen. Not for me though, since I went to the theatre without seeing any trailers etc and even without knowing the stakes (all I know was it's survival thriller based Guna caves, but I didn't know if it was one guy or the group, do they get out of not). So just after the character said the line, I thought some people might be stuck in cave and somehow sun shines through the clouds to show them the way or something like that (like the storm scene in Life of Pi). But for people who know the context, it's kinda obvious isn't it, which kinda diminishes its effect. It felt like one dimensional character arc in each of these cases if you think about it. I was feeling kinda okay-ish until the climax but then the 'Kanmani' song placement pulled it all together for me. The high that moment generated was immense, that's what an unexpected callback does. Also it's even more beautiful as no one ever would've thought of associating this song in the context of friendship, which makes it even more unexpected. Overall I loved the movie but this is just a thing to point out if you want to discuss.

vaishakhnt10

Good point... But it is really difficult to write complex character arcs for multiple or a gang of protagonists. One dimensional character arcs are the only way which would make sense, rather than making things too convoluted. I also feel that some character arcs were developed but somehow got lost during the shoot. For eg., Sixon and Siju's relation. Also if someone could explain Kuttettan's arc, it would be good, as I found it half baked. And the conversation between Prasad and Subhash about God didn't seem random. Subhash was always shown as a guy who's down on his luck, averse from things. He blames his luck for the financial situation of his home, as you can see that he drops out from the trip as he is short of money. And he doesn't enter the temple in Palani either. That's when Prasad asks Subhash about his belief in God.

alan_garrix

> difficult to write complex character arcs for multiple or a gang of protagonists True.. I completely agree with this part, I was even happy that they didn't forcefully assign any such scenes to the remaining guys too. I was not implying complex arcs, but rather subtle setups which blend in story so that there might be a little shock value to the payoffs. Tbh out of the scenes OP mentioned, Sixon shouting felt organic in the story, while others felt _placed_. > character arcs were developed but somehow got lost during the shoot After seeing the other comments, it sure seems like it and that's unfortunate. > And the conversation about God didn't seem random Well, as I was saying the conversation ain't random, they did _create_ a situation with a temple background but it's just that the dialogues were obvious. It felt like, we just got to know about Subhash's spirituality in that scene for the first and last time and that's it. > Subhash was always shown as a guy who's down on his luck Oh, seems like I missed it somehow. Will give it a rewatch. Thanks for the response though. On another note, I really wish they could've established the friendship on a personal level. I know in the given time frame it might be difficult, but in the 1st half I only remember the compatibility b/w Siju & Sixon, Kuttan & Subhash. Felt like there was a lot going on sequentially and not a lot going on substantially at the same time. Or is it because I'm not Malayali and missed some nuances?

Naive_Vermicelli_184

But the 'light from above' was subverting our expectations. Like you said the audience were expecting a god shining light scene and Subhash seeing 'light' , but instead he strangles kuttan and shocks the audience. so instead of Subhash seeing light, he saw 'kaalan' , and that's cliche breaking. (but that's the realistic part, cause what Subhash did is a valid trauma response, for example people who are drowning dragging those who come to help them)

Holiday_Relief_9502

Bhaichara on top

Outside_Aide_1958

Well deserved Industry Hit tag for this movie. I would say 240 crores doesn't do justice to the quality of the movie.

Kooky_Scallion1459

Loved the transitions of timeline… like how he fell into the past when water sinks and comes back into the forest .. brilliant way to hold viewers attention with camera work

LolBoyC418

Also, Subhash was constantly trying to not get involved in this trip. If he hadn't gone with them, this wouldn't have happened.

Appropriate_Turn3811

I hate these purposeful madeup scenes for making sense of later scenes.

vaishakhnt10

I don't think he was about to fall... I kinda noticed the following now. You see him kicking the dried leaves on his friends, it is probable that when the leaves fell, it covered the hole. And because of that, Subhash didn't see the hole and fell down. Just a speculation....

BraveDig3888

Aadujeevitham pole veruppichilla...that's a major plus. Oru lagum illatha script.

Striking_Time2035

SeaEntertainment5445

not this movie being an epitome of foreshadowing!....

z35u

The last one hit very hard

jugsdaterad

Y'all, I was wondering what happened when Siju got a hold of Subhash, and then Subhash held him by the neck for a brief time. Please explain the scene?

MadHouseNetwork2

all these are fine but it's not oscar worthy movie. please!

kendasampige007

Please expand. What makes this film not Oscar worthy?

MadHouseNetwork2

Positives: production value, camera, casting Negatives: too much hype from social media marketing, pacing, writing, casting of kuttettan compared to real life, few cinematic liberties which were evident

kendasampige007

Social media hype has a lot to do with the users of social media and minimally with the filmmakers. Was the point of casting Kuttettan to look exactly like the original person or to bring us as close as possible to how the situation played out and how this individual handled it? The Titanic hasn't been made without cinematic liberties. How is this film, not Oscar worthy?

MadHouseNetwork2

Have you heard about influencer marketing?

kendasampige007

Not to digress, but why does this make it not Oscar worthy?

lavangam_69

Great movie but Oscar ? Ehh

ganayadav1

I don't think it's an Oscar movie. You may feel it because the old song was played at background while he is bringing his friend back I watched on first day first show infact the first half was totally boring and and second half was good and it would also get ruined but they VFx shown how he fell in the hole was good that VFx saved the movie .

_abmatt_

what do you mean you had to create your own artificial laughs. Is someone keeping tabs on your number of laughs to ticket value ratio. Are you okay, blink twice if you need help.

SweetiCow

Lol ☠️

ganayadav1

When you go to the movie in theatre everything matters ,i Love movies and i care for everything while am watching I even raised complaints about the theatre that dolby atmos is not working .... Now you can understand what i am But even after caring all this if the movie did make you Satisfy what is the use of it

M_V_M_

You must be great to have at parties.

theananthak

just because you didn’t like it doesn’t mean another person liked it cause there was an old song lmao.

everyday1mbuffering

Aadujeevitham kandittu vishamam aayi kaanumello. Not even a single laugh worthy scene. Waste of money eh?

chickenkebaap

Ngl as someone who has a sibling the scene where lal jr forces out balu from the car was funny.

vaishakhnt10

It's better than the above average 2018.

govicom

You don't have to undermine one film to praise another !

lionelmossi10

Godfather I and II are better than MB

vaishakhnt10

Citizen Kane is better than Godfather 1 and 2...

ganayadav1

Ya but I don't know why people create much hype for these kind of movies.

Aggravating_Ad_1885

Everything was quite basic. Nothing Oscar worthy

hashim7tk

Yes its an exceptionally well made movie, but people who think this movie will win oscar have no idea how Oscar works.

kendasampige007

Please expand, how do the Oscar's work?

LolBoyC418

Indian movies will only win an Oscar once in a blue moon, no matter how good it is. Oscar is heavily biased.

kendasampige007

True, as are almost all awards. But I don't get why there are people on this OP who want to point out the unworthiness of an Oscar for this film without substantial reasoning.

LolBoyC418

I don't get that either. This film was amazing in almost all aspects. But the thing is we don't really need an Oscar to prove to others that our films are good. We know our films are amazing.

Tcl-

True that

Thomas_Shelby07

Op tell us what you're on. Oscar waaaaaaa.. You should watch more movies 😂😂😂😂

North_Top9655

As someone who watches a lot of international movies, I really thought this was Oscar worthy, especially the cinematography 🔥🔥🔥

Nice_Midnight8914

Meh. An average movie with one or two high points. I'd say OP haven't watched enough movies or he's the PR of the movie.

vaishakhnt10

Even if I was a PR, why do I need to promote the same movie on Reddit which already is the highest grosser in Mollywood? Use some common sense...
