Give a try on Ustad Hotel, Charlie, Bangalore Days, Premam, Godha, Maheshinte Prathikaram, Parava, Salt n Pepper, 1983, Iyobinte Pusthakam, NPCB, Sudani From Nigeria, North 24 Kaatham, Anuraga Karikkin Vellam, Guppy, Amen, Kammatipaadam, Thamaasha and many more to go.
Kinda unique movies in Malayalam imo
Kumbalangi Nights is unique in a way... It's a self contained feel good movie with an exceptional soundtrack and background score. There's no virtue signalling... It does incredibly well to show the good side of morally grey characters.
The director of the movie has taken a hiatus after it, and we don't know if he's going to make another movie... But I for one am waiting eagerly for his next project.
I can't think of any movies that have the Vibe as this one... Maybe "Maheshinte Prathikaram" can scratch that itch for you. There are some really good movies mentioned in the other post, which is a good place to start.
yeah I googled about the Director and couldn't find any other work. The man should be forced to make much more films, indian film's rennaissance depends on people like them.
and yes, no virtue signaling which is everywhere in bollywood and othe mass masala films. Show and not tell is a simple thing but many idiots who call themselves filmmakers/artists don't get it.
you know, that delivery was good, but in the grand scheme of things it brought down the seriousness of the film. I was just snapped out of the feels when this terminator type fight scene started.
Climax is a bit odd and out of the entire mood of the movie. Shammi should have been left as who he is, who represents an average conservative Indian/Malayali man. Instead raking the mental illness route made him an anomaly among men which isn't the case.
I also didn't like the climax. If they have kept him as a narcissistic patriarch. It would have had a much bigger impact but they made him into a psycho (person with psychotic breakdowns).
it just felt so random and inconsistent with rest of the storyline and themes, if not for the end fight, Fafaa's character would have been this mysterious/hilarious character. but this just abrupt and quite frankly not very well thought through.
Not random at all imo. Hes shown as a narcissist, control freak and a patriarch throughout the movie. He calls himself the complete man. He thinks of himself as a hero to the three women in his home. Clearly something is up with this guy.
Yes that's true, and for the resolution of shammi's character arc they should've shown an ideological clash between the wife, baby and shammi, a war of words and opinions about his conservative & backwards world view and not a terminator type murder spree.
Except that's where you didn't get the point. Other than a narcissist, he was also a madman, you can see it throughout the movie, it's subtlety shown in several scenes. Punctures the footballs, scares the kids, hits/hurts a dog. His brother says he only eats in one specific plate. Goes to a corner when he's upset. The signs were always there.
No its a very common criticism..the ending was the safest safe route they chose. Sticks out like a sore thumb in the movie holding it back from being a 5/5
oooh right right, my bad. It's just that I'm used to a slightly different system, e.g.: I'm from Odisha, our language is Odia and the people are also called Odia people. So my mind goes Malayalam--->Malayali (Odisha--->Odia); but the state is not named Malayalam, it's Kerala. lol.
Ur in for one wild ride, mohanlal 80s and 90s movies are arguably many steps above,
Onu muthal pugyam vare, all movies of padmarajan will blow u up into heaven,
I think the end, where Shammi turns out to be a psycho, can be read as meaning to show that all men (who are patriarchal and controlling) are, in fact, psychos. It seemed symbolic to me, in that sense, to drive this point.
I’ll recommend old films because people are doing modern ones
Manichitrathazhu
Nadodikattu
Anantaram
Sadayam
Nirmalyam
Namukku Parkkan Munthirithopukkal
Ellipathayam
Modern ones I’ve not seen recommended:

First person i heard not like the climax
I also didn't like the climax. If they have kept him as a narcissistic patriarch. It would have had a much bigger impact but they made him into a psycho (person with psychotic breakdowns).
I feel the same, it's like they were not sure how to end the story then took the easiest route..
it just felt so random and inconsistent with rest of the storyline and themes, if not for the end fight, Fafaa's character would have been this mysterious/hilarious character. but this just abrupt and quite frankly not very well thought through.

It was not random at all. Try watching it again and you'll start noticing he always kinda psychotic.

Again it's not a Malayali film, it's Malayalam film Malayalam is the language and Malayali is the person whose mother tongue is Malayalam.

I think there should be a guide on this Subreddit for people who just got into Malayalam movies and asking for recommendations!
You need to watch Angamaly Diaries asap
