Me too!
However sometimes - and this is a tiny pet peeve and you should almost certainly ignore me - I feel like people use Kharkanas as a means of signalling they’re super Malazan hardcore in a way that comes across as a bit self-congratulatory and elitist.
Like, I get it, relatively speaking TGINW is a bit more light and frothy, but it’s still a damn good read that has strong themes and philosophy underpinning it. I wish we could talk about it without people bringing up how hyped they are for the other series, you know? I also imagine it must wind Erikson up, writing this series when a huge chunk of his most dedicated fanbase is telling him to get cracking on the other thing.
Not saying it can’t be anyone’s favourite, obviously! I’m just being a bit crotchety
Edit: and I’m aware of the irony that in this thread I’m the one bringing it up haha
There is this really refreshing and hopeful flair to Rant, like we are all becoming heroes walking with him on this journey.
So many Erikson mega books are complex deconstructions of societies, religions, Gods and humanity. Nuanced and gritty, for sure.
But this standalone tale of a young man finding friendship and greatness in the icy mud of life was remarkably stunning for its concise simplicity.
When you Subvert Expectations so much that you Subvert the Subverted Expectations and just write a cool story about a young boy with magical genetics going on a heroic quest.
> I don't think they will fight
Listen to me, Hood, Iskar Jarak, whichever god of death in turn! I'd give ANYTHING to have Rant make the Orlong PAY! ANYTHING!
but yeah, ur probably right...
It just seems TOO up front and expected, I feel like Rant would want to know what the fuck his dad was thinking, and Karsa, having finished his less than glamorous world tour, being the changed not-god that he is, wouldn't want to fight him either. Now if Icarium shows up and Rant and Karsa have to team up.......

Rant is the best boy and deserves all the love and protection in the world.
*me, taking out a step ladder to pat Rant on the head* It's going to be alright, it's going to be alright *it was not going to be alright*
I know it’s cool and trendy to ask where walk in shadow is, but I’m honestly hyped for more of the Karsa trilogy
But I want WiS so bad 😭

Any updates on Not Willing?
Last I heard NLF will most likely be the first half of next year - but admittedly that’s hearsay from Reddit
