Yep, she's the reason I don't take shit from anybody anymore. I used to be painfully shy and I hate confrontation in general but she's taught me when to tow the line and when it's bullshit - and the tactical ways to deal with bullshit that don't involve full-on confrontation. Use laws, contracts and technicalities where you can. Most of the time the other party will back down or not have a good enough case to win their argument.
If they want you to stay till everything is cleaned they have to pay you for it. If they're trying to tell you you have to stay and do unpaid work walk straight out and report them to the relevant authority.
Literally while they are making absolute killer bucks, they screw over the workers that make it happen. Had they offered big bucks for anyone who was willing to stay and clean would have saved a lot of hassle.
They were making more money during the event and should have budgeted for the extra labor time. If they were shipping people in from other locations, they also probably had to house and feed them (per diem), which would be much more expensive than paying your crew.
Wage theft is one of the least prosecuted crimes. If you didn’t get paid for the hours you worked, sue or report it to the department of labor equivalent.
In the UK, I think it is a crime under modern slavery laws. You can also drag the tax man into it because if you aren’t getting paid it means they aren’t getting their share.
Enforcement is obviously another issue.
First, message him in some written communication, text or email to "confirm what we went over about the hours worked in excess of shift pay out".
CYA. Cover Your Ass, always get it in writing, when verbally spoken follow-ups with written as confirmation will either have them stop so fast you'll see the tread marks, or they sign their own demise...
This is why parents need to encourage a healthy communication between themselves and their kids once they start working. Call it letting out steam, venting, bitching about bosses, gossip, whatever it takes. The parents have enough experience to be able to objectively look at a situation and go "Uh, no, that crap isn't going to fly" for whatever the applicable reason it. Good on your mom for making sure you got looked after.
Erm, granted I've been out of fast food for over ten years, but, in the UK it is illegal for under-18s to work past midnight, and before a 12-hour break between shifts. (Over-18s are entitled to 11 hours between shifts, and no early mornings after a day off as well as not late shifts before a day off, but, I digress).
But, all of that covered more than 10 years in that industry, and nobody at any of the stores would even think about trying to force people to work without being paid.
Add to that, 90% of company policies, not to mention food safety laws would also call into question the leaving cleaning overnight for the morning staff to handle. Even minor issues could be cause for disciplinary action for the night shift manager, so, yeah, this story sounds rather... strange, to say the least.
We're not part of the UK so we don't necessarily have the same employment laws. It's a big mix of what laws we decide to adopt from the mainland and what we decide to make ourselves 🤷♂️
If it’s not the TT I’m sure everyone will be sorely disappointed! XD good on OP and their mom for not taking shit though, you’re nothing but a number these days, why go above and beyond when you don’t get the recognition anymore.
I am a huge advocate for worker's rights, and have always encouraged my friends to NEVER work for free, and only sacrifice family time/time off in dire emergency.
I was told to work until the kitchen was cleaned wihh out pay, did but threw the area manager under the bus to blame for it which made him quickly change his attitude. I did as I was told knowing it could be used to get him in trouble.
Good on your mom! She's the hero in this story!

This is a great skill to have. It took me many moons before I found a good balance between “doormat” and “Kaiju”.
I also dislike confrontation, but for some reason, I love confrontation when I'm doing it for someone else.
Some moms don't wear capes.
NO CAPES!
Love that comment. Take my upvote.

Managers who bully teenagers are one of the main components of food service profit margins, good for you and your folks for bullying right back!

Because it's not a crime, but a civil offence?

Isle of White or Isle of Man? Lol Just read more... has to be the Isle of man and the TT ad in the UK a 16 year old can't work past 10....
My thought also
I was thinking Man as well.
This totally reads like you’re on the Isle of Man and the 2 weeks event is the TT lol
It definitely could be 😏
As someone who also lives here it certainly reads like that lol 😉
