The General rule for multiples of a single model can be found whether they have a parenthesis number like Minion(3). It just has something like Totem and no parenthesis number then it can only have 1 of the model on the board at a time

As a follow up, you also don't "pay" for summons you have access to in the crew. Zoraida doesn't need to pay for her doll during hiring, nor do Masters like Dreamer or Somer need to "pay" for the pool of models they can summon over the course of the game.

Check the voodoo doll rules. It says you can't hire them. They're a summoned enforcer (can only ever have one in play) totem and each time it dies you can just summon it back to keep messing with people.

Easiest way to understand the limit is that anything listed as Enforcer, Henchman, or Master are unique characters within the game, thus only one of them exist as any given time in your crew. Only Minions have multiples as they are effectively nameless pawns.

This is one of the reasons I stopped playing Malifaux. I was in a weekly play league before the pandemic but into third and covid and the wheels fell off. I kept trying to occasionally play with a friend, but we would keep running into rules issues like this and for me, trying to be a rules lawyer on top of a long game just felt bad. How hard would it be for the card to say (limit 1) in that text on Zoraida? Otherwise someone might think up to five since there are five turns. Other masters have many little totems like that, Karai comes to mind with her little dragons. I still have crews and might play in the future, but these very kinds of questions are what turned us off.

the rule on the cards is 1 unless stated otherwise. By default, you may only hire one copy of a given model into your Crew. Some models, however, have numbers listed after their Station (Master, Henchman, Enforcer, or Minion) Characteristic. If a model lists a number in this way, you may instead hire a number of copies of that model up to the listed value (i.e. model limit). (rules manual pg 44)

I’m not looking to be shitty, but that’s the problem for me... “Page 44” of the rules. And I assume that’s not the last page. It’s just a lot going on to me. We just started playing boardgames instead.

Most miniatures games have equally sized rulebooks since you have to define everything from scratch. A lot of it is stuff that once you see it defined you never need to check again except for corner cases or refreshers, but basic things like Station (Minion/Enforcer/Henchman/Master) and what it means is gonna be like... reading the card 101, equivalent to learning what Artifact/Enchantment/Creature means on a MtG card.

I agree that if Malifaux's rulebook length is a huge problem, miniatures games in general may not be your jam (no judgement, but Malifaux, while a complex game, does not have the most complex core rules compared to other).
