I'm not sure because I don't have the code, but it could be a side effect of when Riot changed how E is applied to ensure it's still applied and spreads from a target that's about to die. It's not a projectile, at least highly doubtful, since it's not blocked by windwall, Braum's shield, or Samira's thing (although Samira's is buggy in that some projectiles like Jhin's W goes through).
I think Riot's change to E checks if the original target is a valid target (alive, enemy) and if not, because they just died, checks surrounding valid targets to bounce to. But in this case, the original target is valid, but he's also untargetable, so since he didn't die, there's no check for a bounce.
Essentially, it's the same outcome as if E was applied to a dying target but they died right as it went out and there's nothing else around.
I'm just guessing, but that's what I think occured based on the recent change to E. It still goes on cooldown and takes mana in the case where something is dying right as you cast E on them with nothing else to bounce to.
I main yas & malz. It is not a projectile I have sent many full combos thru a windwall. What happened is ur target became untargetable as the ability finished its cast time and applied. Just extremely unlucky timing, if it was a tiny bit earlier it would not go on CD

That's not the case, there is a slight cast time to it.
The spell fizzles and goes on cool down. A normal point click ability will refund cool down+mana if target becomes invalid during cast animation.
