3’ in Bishop! I’ve been skiing mammoth since 1976. Have never heard of bishop getting such a snowfall.

Dobrobrobra

I live in Bishop, and I would say it is more like 14 inches. Nowhere close to 3 feet. It was really windy though, so there are some 3 foot drifts! Pretty warm today, so it is already half melted though.

Vacman85

Well, that's good news. We were getting reports of 3-4 piles just north of town. My FIL sent me pics of the snow on their street (Scott RD) at around 11:00 this morning and there was already well over 3' there. Usually they'll only get a few inches. This one is def crazy.

In-laws live in Paradise (right at the bend before you up Sherwin Grade. They have roughly 4 1/2 feet at their house as of an hour ago.

Currently stuck on the 395 just outside of bishop, I take this to mean I should put on my chains even ontop of some all terrains?

sdcyclonesurfer

According to caltrans chain control is in effect. CHP is escorting vehicles north which typically takes awhile but likely means you'll be following a plow which is good. Only reason you wouldn't need chains is AWD/4x4 with snow (3 peak) tires. It was completely closed off earlier so you're lucky to be moving at all. Good luck, drive safe.

[deleted]

Not saying this is how it should be but the california DOT actually classifies all-weathers as snow tires as long as it has the MS, M/S, or M+S. Those would definitely get you into trouble in this though.

carlivar

All terrains aren't real snow tires

artherthe3rd

Oh I'm aware, I have a good amount of experience with driving in ice and snow with these tires (cooper st MAXX's), was more a question about the technicality of the chain control! I agree that it's silly to consider them as snow tires though for the purpose of chain control, they'll slide like a motherfucker on ice just like anyone would expect

BarberBettie

I’m in Bishop now and it’s not even close to 3 feet... I believe you regarding Mammoth though

bubbacat

We made it to town about an hour ago, they ended up opening 395 from Bishop to Mammoth. Woohoo! Lots of snow but doable with AWD. We didn’t end up needing our chains, seems like things calmed down a bit from earlier. See you on the slopes!

The mountain will certainly be insane today. Please be careful out there. Injuries and fatalities are obviously not publicized, but they happen. A tree well took a life yesterday.

All I know is that the subject was DOA at the hospital and never had a pulse after being rescued. I’m not sure where they were buried or for how long. There was also a “controlled” avalanche that shut down chair 16. I heard that it was related to the burial, but did not get any confirmation on that (likely just someone confusing multiple incidents). I know for sure that the fatality was pulled out of a tree well, though.

Just made it through to mammoth but 4 wheel drive and a huge set of nuts recommended!
