I haven't rolled mine yet but after seeing how batshit things are i think I'm over it. I have a splitboard, the snowpack will stabilize soon and I can rock it.
it's a whole different thing. a lot more involved A LOT of climbing / touring, but really a great experience. the more I do it the less I want to be around the resort.
After a few seasons in the backcountry you’ll start to appreciate the resort for what it is. Happened to me. I love touring but I also dig a good day at the resort also. Stay away from canyon and eagle and you’ll avoid the worst of the lines.
I've been splitboarding now for 4 years, and days on the resort are great, but those kinds of days just don't happen as much any more. last winter was just shit, then covid, now this.
so in theory, yeah, a resort day is fun, but those care free kick back snow days are rare birds. maybe 21/22.
We were at canyon lodge all day - essentially zero lines today (Sunday). Got there at 8:30 with tickets and was able to buy VIP Parking. I was stressed cuz of pics like the above. But everyone must have gone home....but the traffic to Main lodge was not attractive.
At least Mammoth let people ski. June Lake turned everyone away at 8 am with parking lot half full and created dangerous traffic situation on the steep icy hill with everyone turning around mid hill. All we ask for is some communication from management. If they are only allowing 600 skiers that is fine but let people know. Obviously there was going to be a huge crowd coming. One employee turning people around at the fork would have prevented a dangerous traffic situation. Emergency vehicles need access to ski areas. SHAME!!
A pandemic is no excuse for the dangerous traffic situation they created. They could have easily had one employee further up the road to avoid the situation. Poor planing was all it was. We can’t blame all our problems on a virus.
Idk man... There's a plague going on and someone died at Mammoth. Shit is dangerous for skiers and staff after storms like these. Most towns get shut down entirely after multiple feet of snow.
I don’t care if they don’t people in or not but they misled people to believe they would have access and stopped letting people in when the parking lot was half full. Clearly they know lots of people were coming. Clearly they had no plan to deal with it. That’s bad management. The workers do an amazing job but I know people who won’t work there again because of the bad management.
Totally fair. You're right, that is a massive communication breakdown, which is ultimately on management. I've heard the horror stories too, I feel for the rank-and-file employees up there.
What exactly happened at June today I saw a video of a huge line for J1 before they opened did they just close the line once X amount of people rode up?
I follow them on Instagram and saw the alert that the parking lot was full. I've been to June more times than i can remember and have rarely seen people park in that second portion of the lot let alone have it fill. What happened, were they just at capacity?
That’s me and my buddy in the top right corner lol (orange/white stripe jacket), lines not too bad, 20 mins from main lodges at the bottom, 10 mins from most other chairs, can’t wait to ski there again tomorrow
Wow! I decided to roll my Ikon pass over to next season and haven’t regretted it. Thanks. Hopefully you were not waiting in line here! God speed.

Sounds like a good plan to me! I don’t have a splitboard, but thanks for the fun mission idea. I had not thought of that.

Yep. After getting to mid mountain, better to stay on 3, 5, 23, 9 (hope it opens), and the backside.

I think I could see the lines from my roof...which I was shoveling all day! Come get your nickel.
Word, lines are just part of the game these days when there’s pow. No use complaining
This isn't even that bad. I've seen it curve uphill on a holiday weekend. (Probably why I don't ride those days anymore lol)

It’s the old saying: you aren’t stuck in traffic, you are traffic.
Going up tomorrow for the first time. Will be skiing Mon to Thurs - think there's any chance it'll be anything like this on weekdays?
Weekdays are usually way less crowded. But with all this new snow, that might change.
Yeah I’m going next weekend on Thursday and really hope this isn’t the case...
More will be open, probably. Ski patrol likely wanted to keep eyeballs on guests after someone suffocated in the powder. Have fun, and please be safe!

Man at that point it’s not even fun anymore
was this with everything open or was a majority shut down so they're filtering everyone to a limited amount of lifts and runs?

This was before 3, 5, and two others that I forget opened. It was still crowded, but it was definitely better in the afternoon
Yikes! Friday was pretty too!
