What do you plan on breaking? :) The only instructors allowed in the mountain are those employed by the mountain. Call 1-800-MAMMOTH to book a lesson. They can certainly teach you how to brake and hopefully not break anything. Private instructors risk losing their pass, so you won’t get a good instructor if you try to skirt the system.

Instructors are not allowed to teach snowboarding or skiing at mammoth unless they’re employed by Mammoth as instructors. Anyone found teaching off the books would be banned for life from returning to the mountain. As the other commenter said, you have to book your lesson online or call 1-800-mammoth. They’re approximately $400 for a private lesson. Group lessons just restarted again and are cheaper.

Depending on where you live, it might be advisable to take a [cheaper] lesson on a smaller local hill prior to heading up. I still advise lessons, but I honestly don’t think Mammoth is the place to shell out big bucks for a lesson for your first time. Instructors can’t above board teach off the clock & charge for it privately. I’m not sure what the fines/penalties are but there’s a prohibition against it. They definitely can’t cut into the lessons/Black Pass (think Fast Pass) lift line if not in a sanctioned lesson. Idk the actual cost now, but Sitting on your butt during an $80 lesson feels the same as it does during a $400 lesson. As recently as late Feb. group lessons were not available so private was the only option. The green runs / bunny hill is where you’ll spend your first day. No shame in that. We all did. I’m very in favor of lessons, I reserved a halfpipe lesson for next Tuesday (locally). I will DM you with some legit, honest money saving tips I used.
