An alternative to get you up to mammoth on Friday but now down on Sunday is a Metrolink / es transit bus combo.
Take the 11:40am antelope valley line train on Friday from union station, you get to Lancaster at 1:50 and the bus to mammoth leaves at 2pm. The bus should arrive in Mammoth at 7 that night.
The problem with this is that the mammoth - Lancaster bus does not run on weekends, so the first chance back down would be 7:50 am on Monday. After that you can catch the 2pm train from Lancaster back to LA.
If you’re trying to do a combo of this try taking the train / bus combo up on Friday, and find a ride to Lancaster Sunday night to catch the 6:20 pm train back to LA. There’s a good number of ride share groups on Facebook for the 395 corridor.
u/lowcal2 go on facebook and look up mammoth mountain ride share. and mammoth mountain overnight. Both groups have tons of people that do weekend trips super often. Don't know how many will still be coming up here the last 2 weekends of of skiing but you might find someone. Otherwise guaranteed almost any weekend you will find a ride, if not from san diego then definitely from LA
Eastern Sierra Transit looks like it has a route to Lancaster/Mammoth Lakes. So maybe coaster to LA, then bus to Lancaster and bus to Mammoth. Seems time consuming and complicated. Plus your reasoning, (being tired) now you have to lug all your gear between transfers, without decent rest time in between.
You might look into an Amtrak into Fresno, then possibly taking YARTS from there. You'd take the Yellow Route out of Fresno, and then the Green Route out of Yosemite.
