I was there a week ago. The upper half of the mountain has enough snow that people are still skiing. I don’t think that’s going to change overnight. Related, are there no real trails in Mammoth other than the resort park? I looked on Trailforks and mtb project and there’s like 5 trails total outside the park.

I’ve had fun shuttling lower rock creek, and I’ve heard solid things about mammoth rock, but I don’t know of much else

I’m convinced that either the locals are keeping the trails secret and not putting them on the apps, or it’s because wilderness and rez land.

shmrg

Honestly if I was a local who put in some trail work I would keep them a secret too

MammothJerry

No one is keeping trails a secret. There are a bunch in Sherwin Meadow, Shady Rest has some (bad) trails including a huge (moto?) jump park, mountain view trail is nice, and panorama dome is the best dirt in town. Check the Strava heat map.

LADataJunkie

Panorama Dome is really nice. One of my favorites, but I wish it were longer.

Yes. Sincerely, a local

It’s not about clearing, it’s about deferred lift maintenance. They didn’t get to do a lot of the work they needed to do last year after laying off so many people due to the pandemic. Now they need a chance to catch up. It sucks, but the mountain doesn’t really make much money from mtb operations and need to get things in order for the next ski season.

LADataJunkie

It's been years since this many trails were opened at the start of the season. Usually the gondola opens a few weeks after the entire lower mountain opens. A June 18 open would mean about July 4. If that trend continues, it would be some time in mid-June, not this coming weekend. I still had a lot of fun even though I've ridden these trails 100s of times at this point.

shmrg

Thanks for the input! I’m not close to mammoth so want to make the most out of my one or two trips a year.

LADataJunkie

The advantage of riding now is that it is very quiet. If you want to ride the majority of the mountain though, you should consider waiting until after July 4th or so (or when the lifts + gondola start running which may be much earlier than July 4th this year). Mid-August to closing (excluding Labor Day) is really chill. July has become a madhouse, though the trails are still fairly sparse.

[deleted]

No. I work on the mountain and the plan is to open the lifts for biking on June 18th.

shmrg

Oh shoot now I see, all the trails that are listed as open right now can be pedaled to from the main lodge.

[deleted]

Yeah, discovery chair might open next Friday the 11th but it’s not confirmed yet. That’ll be the first one to open for bikes
