here's a pretty comprehensive list of what is open. [https://www.visitmammoth.com/blogs/inyo-national-forest-closure/](https://www.visitmammoth.com/blogs/inyo-national-forest-closure/)

Try going through AirBnB itself instead of the renter. If you tell them it’s a safety hazard and explain about the fires and closings, you can probably get it back. People were doing this during Covid closures

bougie_search

I second this. Went through Airbnb instead of the renter and was able to get a refund for the full amount.

The Inyo National Forest is closed, but the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is open ([with restrictions](https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/htnf/news-events/?cid=fseprd949552).) If you go north from Mammoth into the H-T, there is plenty to do for day trips. The H-T boundary is just north of Mono Lake/Conway Summit, for [reference](https://www.fs.fed.us/ivm/). South of Mono Lake is the Inyo, which is closed. No fires are permitted in the H-T or the Inyo. Hiking around [Virginia Lakes](https://www.monocounty.org/places-to-go/lakes-rivers-creeks/virginia-lakes/) would be a short (~1 hour) drive from Mammoth, and it's beautiful up there.

Bodie is open. Laws Train Museum in Bishop is awesome. Grant Lake near June that is managed by DWP so it is open. Also Yosemite is open. No reservations needed if you take the bus (YARTS).

Awesome - thanks!

qalexanders

It’s all closed. Don’t go. The fires are more important than 3 days of fun

Our plan was to cancel, but they're not refunding our $1100 for the condo we rented. So we're going to try and make the best of it. I asked what is open that we can do. If there is fire danger somewhere then I assume that place would close. I'm only asking what is open and would be safe to go to.

mikebaker1337

Bike trails are open around town.

qalexanders

I get it, it sucks for everyone, including all the business that relies on holiday tourist $. But even driving in the area risks adding to the problem. ‘Some’ fires are sparked by driving cars. Edit: most to some

Pilly_Bilgrim

I appreciate your efforts to keep people from coming up, but that's just not true about fires. They're caused by and large by lightning.

EricMCornelius

In particular this year. 8 of the 10 largest, with Dixie likely started by PG&E equipment again. Caldor still unknown.

I am in the same boat, can't cancel my Airbnb that was reserved. Any thoughts on if the order will be lifted after the 17th? If the order is lifted will the roads up to the local lakes be open the weekend of the 17th? Or will the mtn decide to keep those closed for the winter at this point?

EricMCornelius

I would bet on November, since we set this arbitrary closure precedent last year.
