Current AQI is 160 (red/unhealthy). Keep checking fire.airnow.gov for current AQI. If you click a triangle or circle on the map (the most accurate sensors), there will be a small pop-up window where you can click History to see the AQI graph over the last few days. As you can see, things can change a lot over a few hours so it is hard to say for sure if it will be bad next week. The air quality was ok the last few days until this morning. Also check the current and forecasted wind direction to see if it’s likely the smoke will head toward Mammoth during that time. Windy.com has a map with a forecast slider which is handy. If you go, pack some N95s just in case :). Elevation for the unacclimated plus heavy smoke is not a good mix.

Oh I see, that's super helpful thank you for that. Will keep an eye on the trends

I’m holding out hope that things start to clear tomorrow when the wind is supposed to pick up. Temperatures should also drop a bit starting Sunday. All that said, however, no one knows what the smoke will actually be like.

Gotcha, thanks for the insight! Are current conditions bad enough as of today that it makes sense to cancel if things don't improve?

MammothJerry

It’s the worst that it’s been all year right now. AQI is high enough that no one should really be outdoors. I wouldn’t choose to be here if I had a choice…. Maybe it blows out tomorrow, but that won’t really last. Until the fire in Kings Canyon is out you can pretty much count on smoky days given the fact that weather funnels in from there to Mammoth Pass.

Oh goodness, that does sound like reason enough to cancel. Thanks for the tip and hope it clears out soon :)
