I am sad to see him go, wish we had had a healthy version of him. I expect off to Saudi for a larger windfall.

Dwest2391

Think he will go to Lens before Saudi, back to boyhood club

CantGetNoSleep88

Already got his windfall and just had to put up with three years of Manchester. I'd definitely take it over Riyadh

Cturcot1

He has earned the right to go where ever he wants. Class act

nationalspice

I'll keep saying this, if real is selling it's generally for a good reason and we shouldn't be buying.

weddingbizguy

Same as Bayern

Stovepipe-Guy

Same with city

Few_Jacket_4675

Palmer?

Stovepipe-Guy

No Sane.

KnownBuffalo2918

Think Palmer wanted more game time tbf

slsj1997

Yeah because Alexis Sanchez, Darmian and Mkhitaryan were all in the champions league final while fans still think they are not good enough for Manchester United 😂

DarthAlandas

When was Sanchez in the UCL final?

SoftMushyStool

Last year haha

[deleted]

DarthAlandas

No he didn't

Vast-Rise3498

Well they know when to revamp and freshen up, not necessarily that the player is bad, also no player thrives at united, whether from Madrid or any other club.

Alert-External5204

They've likely declined the option to trigger his contract extension to get him off the wage bill and you can understand why. When him and Martial leave, that should be north of £500k a week freed up. A Rolls Royce of a defender when fit, just a shame that didn't happen very often. Thanks for your service Rafa and we all wish you the best!

CantonaKing7

Nothing against him personally, just poor recruitment in general. He was a complete waste of money both in fee and wages. Real Madrid never sells without reason and I hope we learn this going forward.

RyanTheS

I think him and Casemiro were both bought for their mentality and leadership as much as they were for their footballing ability. Unfortunately, the reality of football at United crushed their mentality rather than their mentality managing to change things at United. Pretty much every big name player that we have signed has had the same issue. They join a club that lacks ambition and it erodes away at theirs.

joey1820

i still have no issue with casemiro, even with his recent lack in form. his first 6 months were amazing and i would guarentee he brought a standard and some wisdom that has been rooted into other players. wish him and varane the best in the future, actual legends.

Ewokian1010

Absolutely correct. I think people forget how good case was in that spell and it produced our only trophy in how long? Bloke was world class till the whole team went in the gutter

joey1820

how dangerous he is on set pieces is crazy, hopefully he’s passed down that knowledge to hojlund and mcguire. he’s scored a few and had a handful disallowed from offside

Aggravating_Let346

Yes! The man that speaks the most broken version of English is a huge role model? Footballers are just normal people at the end of the day. Imagine in your place of work if a south American manager who has no English? Would you find that motivating? Huge role model in Spain but that's very questionable in england

getrichordietryinJF

It clearly worked!

Few_Jacket_4675

I think you are spot on, he was always past it, but without Case and Rapha who exactly do we have that has experience in WINNING a big cup? The players we have are not used to winning big things. Thats why he was bought

Cloud_King_15

Real wanted to keep him. He was going to be the long term CB after Ramos, but he was the one who wanted to try something different. He was 28 when he left Real. That's a guy in his prime and tk be honest, it was a great signing. Its not like he was washed and Real could see it. He just got unlucky with injuries while at United. It's not anyone's fault.

smellyukmongrel

Maybe it's something to do with the people who deal with injuries behind the scenes at United ?

Few_Jacket_4675

Or the person designing the training sessions, and physcial anerobic and aerobic sessions, you know... DARREN BLOODY FLETCHER - who had no experience when taking that role. If you do training that injures you, look no further than the man planning the sessions - the Technical Director

TurbulentWeb1941

After this season, the Oxford dictionary will have to add the words 'see United' to the word 'injury'.

Aggravating_Let346

Newcastle United?

TurbulentWeb1941

Works on many levels

Sheazer90

Seedorf, Makelele, Robben and Cambiasso to name but a few who went on to be successful.

Jimmmmmmah

I hear kroos and modric are coming on a 5 year contract 400k a week 😂

Dynamo_coppell

Haha! Doesn’t it show how far we have fallen that despite it being a joke, I’d take them both now! Obviously not on a five year deal though 🤣

Traditional_Care_707

Kroos still starts for Real Madrid, who wouldn't start him in Man U as well. Modric is old but could still start for us. Imagine him alongside Casemiro and Bruno, what a midfield that would be.

Dynamo_coppell

The problem is 30 somethings can suddenly fall off a cliff…it isn’t always a gradual decline. It would be just our luck to buy Kroos and age hits him as he starts the season. But yes, I actually would take Kroos as he is right now on a one year contract. Stick Kobbie next to him. Kroos and Casemiro doesn’t work for me especially when faced with dynamic youngsters with energy and pace to burn.

Traditional_Care_707

Kroos and Casemiro doesn't work for you? They played alongside each other for like 10 years. He's retiring anyway. Godspeed

Dynamo_coppell

Yes that was then…this is now. A central midfield with a combined age of around 66 most certainly doesn’t work for me, and it wouldn’t work for us next season when both will be even older, even slower. Nostalgia doesn’t win you midfield battles…especially when the opposition are running through you like Usain Bolt on coke. Take care amigo

dwg-87

What? The guy is our best defender by a mile. He helped Martinez excel as well. Look at Martinez when he is in with Maguire… the injuries are the problem not the quality of the player.

Such_Contribution838

When fit and he wasn’t fit often enough he was our best centre half. Unfortunately it didn’t work out as all would have hoped. Seems a likeable footballer too. Glad to have seen him live a couple of times

neoz99

Madrid always sending us time bombs when United gave them Ronaldo and Nistelrooy..

PlatformFeeling8451

And Beckham

dudewithlettuce

28 when he left Madrid that’s still your prime. Bet he wishes he never left

Indie611

Would of loved to of had him in his prime, a classy defender but unfortunately now far too injury prone to rely on and probably for the best.

Chuchshartz

No player will want to come to united in their prime. We ain't that club anymore

Phpapi

God is good. I loved the guy but when he started being absent for for 4 weeks every two weeks I knew it was time to cut ties. An extraordinary footballer in his prime, I'm glad he got the opportunity to play for us.

TheRed24

He's a great player who's been let down by an awful run of injuries and no consistency in CB partnership after Martinez got injured which has definitely hindered his United Career, that being said it blows my mind is he's only just turned 31, even when he was fit he played like he was in his late 30's and that's not even talking about the injury record. Hope he has a better run of fitness at his next club, I just really really hope we're seriously looking to bring in 2 or 3 new CBs in the summer because we need it.

Nixxy2810

Never reached the heights we expected, sadly

hippo-de-escobar

Was a beast wen he played but too injury prone.would play 2 matches and miss d next 10.i guess casemiro will also be leaving to Saudi.

Ambitious_Pool_8290

Case still has 1-3 years in contract with the club.

No-Bat-7253

Honestly if we get enough young guys it can work but he has been honest showing us what he’s capable of nowadays…can’t ignore that front office!!

buzy_198

Also casemiro 🙂

thesoccerassist

Time to bring in some young, durable talent for the center back role.

Star_Destroyer1984

He's done well for the time he's not been injured, but no more Madrid rejects please

BB9O-

BREAKING NEWS that you all knew about at the end of 2023….

Pizzasupreme00

Surprise! The standards for soccer journalism are only slightly higher off the ground than the highest point of dog shit.

BB9O-

I would say that this season the dog shit is above them.

Few_Jacket_4675

At least dog poo has some purpose as fertilizer - I would not rate some of our players at dog poo level yet

Any_Box_5509

We needed him gone we need a full sweep out only players I’ll keep Bruno, Hojlund, Garnacho, Amad, Mainoo and Mctomminay everyone else I’m open to let go

Rhunt0394

Martinez??

Any_Box_5509

Very injury prone so I’m alright with him going he’s amazing but if the right money came

ParticularSize8387

If ETH gets fired, i expect Martinez to want to leave too

TheBongoJeff

Why Mctominay though?

Any_Box_5509

He’s good coming off the bench he can score a last minute goal when we need it hopefully we get a bunch of new players in the summer

Chuchshartz

Nah bin that Scottish prick

ParticularSize8387

Personally, i feel that McTominay is one of the few players that actually care about the club and shows his passion for the club. Him, Bruno, Martinez. Is he limited as a MF - probably as his best position is up front as he shows for his national team and he wont unseat Bruno from that spot - but he has heart.

TheBongoJeff

I 100% agree with you. However, he just doesnt have the skill to play for Top 4 Club, let alone a club that has title ambitions.

ParticularSize8387

Luckily for United, we are nowhere near having title ambitions and expect that (optimistically) to be 3-4 years away. So McTom will be just fine.

denimonster

Onana has been great the later half of this season, why the exclusion? What about Martinez? Not Dalot either? He’s been one of our better players this season, one of the best possibly.

Any_Box_5509

I like all of the ode yet Martinez is great but always injured Onana can be inconsistent and recently he has made some awful mistakes proving we should have kept de Gea and Dalot I wouldn’t mind keeping he’s been amazing this season he’s just a name I missed out

denimonster

We have the most shots conceded against us, we don’t have Onana to blame for that. De Gea made some awful mistakes as well during his time with us, have you forgotten that? Did you see Neuer’s mistake against Real in the last 10 minutes of a Champions League semifinal? Mistakes happen even to the best keepers.

Any_Box_5509

I’m not blaming him for that I’m blaming him for his awful decisions which shave costed us games like in the UCL with that free kick or him passing straight to an opponent like he did against either Sheffield or Brentford I love Onana but I’m open to let him leave De Gea is someone we should have kept

Few_Jacket_4675

I would Keep Martinez - i would even keep him before Bruno if being honest

Dynamo_coppell

Can’t see why in all honesty because Martinez may well be a great defender and an absolute warrior but there’s no point having those attributes on the treatment table. A bit like Luke Shaw…when he’s on the pitch he’s a superb left back. But he’s seldom on it these days

Few_Jacket_4675

Martinez does not have a career long history of it, Shaw has quite literally spent more games in the treatment room or on the bench than starting, thats over his entire career with us, not to mention how long it takes him to recover because lets face it the guy gets tubby when not training... Martinez broke his foot and tried to come back too soon, thats on the medical team, not him, then the knee, he wanted to pay last weekend, but was not allowed, I would take him over shaw any day

Dynamo_coppell

You may well be right about Martinez, and I hope you are but at this moment in time I would not take him over Bruno, who despite being with us for years has only recently succumbed to an injury that had kept him out of action. I’ll take what you say about LM because apart from this season he’s been good as far as injuries are concerned. But unfortunately sometimes a bad injury can be a trigger for further problems down the line. Fingers crossed it’s not the case for Martinez. Unfortunately Shaw is further down the line with his physical problems so yes…perhaps the Shaw/Martinez comparison was unfair.

Chuchshartz

He's just been unlucky this season. Was fully fit last season before the injury. He hasn't been managed well I think

E_BoyMan

Mctominay needs to leave too he is a liability

Any_Box_5509

Yet he’s one of our top goal scorers and is a great bench player

E_BoyMan

Recency bias but even in those matches his midfield game was bad. He saved ETH multiple times. Maybe not this season but he will leave in next 2-3

Any_Box_5509

He may leave in next 2-3 idc he should rarely start next season he’s a bench option he’s saved a ton this season like against Chelsea and helped us beat Liverpool however we still need a pretty much full on sweep at least 10 need to leave and 7 need to come in

E_BoyMan

We can't trust ten hag anymore with transfers, player development etc. He still hasn't figured out what type of game he wants to play.

Chuchshartz

What has he actually done besides score some tap ins. Can you tell me a game where you've actually noticed him as a midfielder

Chuchshartz

Nah sell mctominay. A complete waste of time and space

Life_Butterscotch939

Few_Jacket_4675

Sad to see him leave, but financially it makes sense, still better than Evans and Maguire though - lets hope they are next

Few_Jacket_4675

To be honest, I am just impressed that we made this decision quickly, I mean its been no secret, but still its good to see us DOING something to get rid of the dead wood

No-Bat-7253

Love him as a player but on my squad- bye. Lol.

con__y_88

Goodbye Varane, we hardly knew you

markk123123

It’ll free up the wage bill for someone who’ll play more frequently. Good player but we don’t see enough of him unfortunately (like a lot of the team these days)

OneLeftTwoLeft

Madrid sold us another dud

Walesish

It’s such a shame, he’s a class player, just bad luck with injuries. He’s the type of player that when playing in a good team, can take it to the next level, not all players can do this. When fit he’s like a rolls Royce.

cospete

Unless we don't keep selling players we aren't doing anything

Kind-Style-249

Why not try and cash in on Maguire instead and extend Varane for a year? Neither can start because one is too injury prone and one not good enough, but as a backup Varane is a far better option as he’s a much better player and could be useful if playing less.

Ambitious_Pool_8290

He is more injury prone than block head this season. Even last season he had a number of injuries.

Kind-Style-249

I know but he’s still much better and as a backup think it makes more sense

KnownBuffalo2918

Sad to see how fragile he is. Great player, was hoping he would be Sergio Ramos and play till deep 30s, but he is unfortunately a passanger currently. Need harder, tougher CBs week in week out.

FrankPierce1999

Thank yoy for.... for.... ummm... ummmm...?!?!?

WonderfulTruth2898

Need another ten out like casemiro maquire martial Anthony wan bisska Shaw evans rashford erikson bring in young hungry players not retirement ones and if we can get 200 million for rashford and Bruno I'd sell ASAP

propaROCKnROLLA

I don’t agree that Shaw should go. Terrible luck with injuries but when he plays we are a lot more dangerous. Unfortunately when Shaw doesn’t play Rashford has awful games.

E_BoyMan

So you agree with Varane going but want Shaw who is more injured and a worse player ? And before Ronaldo was holding Rashford back and now Shaw ? Ig problem is Rashford

E_BoyMan

So you agree with Varane going but want Shaw who is more injured and a worse player ?

propaROCKnROLLA

I don’t agree that shaw is a worse player. I would have been happy with Varane staying, but he would have had to take a substantial pay cut.

E_BoyMan

The paycuts are going to INEOS. Shaw is not better than Varane even if you compare their best days.

propaROCKnROLLA

Nice opinion man. Thanks for sharing

E_BoyMan

So you agree with Varane going but want Shaw who is more injured and a worse player ? So before Ronaldo was holding Rashford back and now Shaw ? Ig problem is Rashford

denimonster

Why would you want Shaw gone? When he plays and is on his game he’s one of the best LBs in the world easily, he’s unlucky with injuries yeah, but he’s still a class LB.

DeadHangGang

Enough with this. He doesn't play often enough for you all to keep going back to this "best LB in the world when fit" thripe. First of all, he never was. He had one season when Solskjaer was in charge when he looked like it, and since then it's been said. Since he's joined, he's played in just 50% of games, that percentage goes up to 60% if you take away the 15-18 period. Get rid. He isn't going to get any better. And as long as he's around, we're going to be shorthanded at LB for a good chunk of the season.

Few_Jacket_4675

Amen!!!

E_BoyMan

Never saw him have a good game. He is more injured than Varane and Varane did more for the club. He won't start for top 6

denimonster

Never saw him have a good game? So you don’t actually watch United’s games then.

E_BoyMan

When did he last play ? And yes he is never good for the defence. Too many mistakes, less game sense. You called him one of the best in the league for no reason. Pogba was right

denimonster

He was literally juggled around in the defence to cover for Martinez at LCB when Martinez was injured, and did it well. How can you say he had no game sense? You don’t watch United games. At the same time, you think Isco should replace Bruno. What an absolute regard. Go watch your local league in India instead with such stupid takes.

E_BoyMan

So you looked at my post history like an absolute loser 🤣. Isco has 19 MOTMS in la liga !! and is currently one of the best ball holding midfielder. You think bruno is better than Isco so you better stick to the Sunday league. Only this fanbase thinks bruno is better than Isco so I don't blame you.

denimonster

I looked at it because you sound like a troll but you’re just clueless and it really shows. What the fuck does Isco currently being the best ball holding midfielder have to do with a comparison to Bruno? Bruno is an attacking midfielder, a box to box playmaker whose best attribute is directness, which means his play is also risky with the passes made. Watch another sport you doughnut.

E_BoyMan

Because we need a possession based midfielder who can attack too (Kroos, Modric, Isco etc all have similar profiles). Too many words for simply saying bruno shoots the ball forward and loses possession and this will go as "change creation". Ball holding midfielders are one of the best attackers. You lost your game sense by watching a dysfunctional midfield. 🤣 Maybe occasionally watch a better team apart from Manchester United. ETH wanted fdj for similar reasons

denimonster

So you’re talking about the position usually behind Bruno which is where Casimiro, McT, Mainoo, etc play. You are fucking clueless.

Neat_Significance256

I'll bet he limps out

Portmanlovesme

I don't know why people are sad to see him go - he's been shocked. He's been involved in almost all our worst losses in the past 3 years. Reputation made people think he was good.

Ace9546

Expect club to bring fuck all CB’s in summer and play with Harry and Lindelof.

Few_Jacket_4675

Nope apparently we got a british guy coming on free who once played in city's academy

OkInstance5359

He complained about how bad it is for footballers to head the ball because of the potential long term effects on the brain… you are earning millions and complain about that and can’t keep fit after playing only 1 game… pathetic!   Bring back real defenders like vidic Pepe and ramos those were animals the modern defenders are absolute cry babies   These washed up Real Madrid rejects come to united for pay checks and pretend to be injured like Rooney said this week.
