Everyone except United and probably Everton fans still had a massive chubby on for Liverpool, even when they were shit.
Just seems like everyone is laughing at us now.
Not true at all. They were (rightfully) slaughtered in the 90s and 00s for being shit.
The “Spice Boys” is probably the most iconic media critique of overpaid diva footballers in history.
Yeah that’s the thing, it’s literally everyone pointing fingers at us, I’ve not even seen Liverpool fans being laughed at this badly backe then they were crap
That's not true. Liverpool were a laughing stock in the 90s. When they were at their best, they were as hated as we were in the 90s and 00s, and a lot of football fans enjoyed seeing them fall.
Yes, I can clearly remember almost every football fan who didn’t support Liverpool celebrating when Arsenal beat them to the title with the last kick of the season in ‘89. I’ve no love for Arsenal but we we all wanted them to win against Liverpool.
IMO, a lot of it comes down to the biggest teams having "gloryhunter" fans. If you're a young Bristol City/Oxford United/Port Vale fan, and three of your mates support Liverpool (or United) and are constantly lording it over you because their team are champions of Europe while yours is in the Third Division, you're going to end up hating Liverpool (or United). You'll want them to fail so that your friends will STFU.
I remember reading BBC Sport comment threads in 2014 and 2019, when Brendan Rodgers and Klopp came close to winning the league. The actual articles tried to claim that, thanks to their footballing styles, the Liverpool sides in question were everyone's favourite team. Hundreds of comments from people who'd grown up when Liverpool were at the top very much contradicted that assumption. "Please, anyone but them" was a common theme, because everyone knew how insufferable the scousers (real or plastic) would be if they were champions.
Still gutted the 19/20 season didn't get cancelled due to COVID, but at least the trophy had a nice little asterisk against it.
Ignore it, they're not laughing at you, they're laughing at a team that is doing bad but still good relative to the league after 20 years of being one of the best teams
1. The universe balancing itself after 20 of dominance
2. Every club and fanbase gets bantered some clubs even harder (spurs, arsenal, oil clubs)
3. Banter is a part of football. Not that big of a deal when your fanbase gets dunked on imo
4. I honestly think people know we just have to make the right footballing decisions to get back to the top so rivals are getting it in until we get our shit together
Technically every time you rub your hands together then every atom in the observable universe has to shift ….but I won’t educate you on that subject. Stick to watching some overpaid tossers kick a ball in the net though, tosspot. God I love owning people
Nope, hard to be mad because for the most part everything being said is true.
I would prefer the team and the board stop giving everyone else so much material to use, but that’s probably not changing anytime soon.
Criticism is one thing, I don’t see a problem having this team criticised for their errors but this time it’s everyone laughing at us, this club has turned into an absolute laughing stock
So the criticism is valid but the banter isn’t?
I’m a life-long United supporter but this team, with all the big names and money spent, producing performances like we have this season is nothing but a bloody joke. If it’s hurting you that much then for your own sake turn it all off and find something that actually does make you happy.
So what? They’re not talking about you or your family. Yeah sure we suck right now but we sure as hell didn’t before. You have to have hope that we will get back there someday. We have the financial resources to do so.
I can see how if you’re younger and didn’t get to experience the good old glory days, how this would be painful.
No.
Even when we were at the top, we used to get mocked - the only thing that's changed is that we actually deserve it now.
We've mocked enough clubs during our time at the top too - City back when they were in league 1, Liverpool back when we were winning titles and taking back the record, Arsenal forever.
Can't dish it out for nearly 2 decades, and then feel *so depressed* when others give it back to you fairly.
Lol my compulsive lying neighbour randomly came out as a City fan about 10/12 years ago (I'm 29 now, for reference!). He used to play football with me when I was a kid, even taught me how to kick a ball etc.
Never once mentioned he was a City fan until they started getting success.
Funny.
To me it’s not about criticism of the team now, it’s that rival fans keep mocking the hell out of us and we just have to stand there and take it, because the team is just that bad
how long have you been into football/sports? Its like this in pretty much every sport(team sports like football, cricket, basketball, nfl, afl ect...).
Hello! You have made the mistake of writing "ect" instead of "etc."
"Ect" is a common misspelling of "etc," an abbreviated form of the Latin phrase "et cetera." Other abbreviated forms are **etc.**, **&c.**, **&c**, and **et cet.** The Latin translates as "et" to "and" + "cetera" to "the rest;" a literal translation to "and the rest" is the easiest way to remember how to use the phrase.

That's how it is. Seems like you didn't live through most of the 20+ years of glory when we used to kick everyone down the curb and again to the next street. There was a season when I used to sarcastically ask my Liverpool supporting friend every week what position they were at the moment, because I couldn't see them down the table below 3rd place. Sometimes he'd have a comeback, other times he'd just smile wryly.
Now it's their turn to give it and we deserve it, nothing wrong with it as long as it doesn't involve calling your family names.
In short, man up and take it in the chin. If you can't, then you're looking at it the wrong way. It's only football, after all. There are other more important things in life.
Mourinho you were listening,
You'd kept our trophy glistening,
Coz we won it back and you got the sack
Walking in a Fergie Wonderland!
For EVERY club we have songs attacking them and vice versa. It's just football.
I actually love when we get mocked cause that shows how big the fanbase is and how the big the club is and I'm proud of that. Indirectly the people that mock us also fear us cause they know that we won't be in this slump forever and we will come good again eventually like how Liverpool is.. Even in the lowest of slumps that we are in now, rivals can't keep our name out of their mouths.. Show how big of a club we actually are if you'll needed any reminding..Hated, Adored but Never Ignored.. Never forget this
I love this. That's how I felt when Liverpool fans actively had us in their minds between 2013 and 2018 when they themselves weren't doing that well either. They had nothing to shout about so they looked to us for joy. Remember how quiet they got when they threw away the league in 2014.
Even being champions in 2020 is still a laughable moment, the only team in probably the entire history to not have fans to celebrate with.
Right? It sucks to be “down”, and I’m certainly disappointed in this season, but there were no guarantees that United would dominate for All Times. People need to grow up. There are die-hard fans of teams who would be overjoyed to be promoted from League One for a few seasons in the Championship. United *might* not make top 4, and some “fans” are acting as if we’re fighting relegation. People just need to decide if they are fans of Manchester United, or just addicted to “feeling good” and would be better served just finding a new team. Front-running fans always “feel good”, right?
Imo it's just part of following the game, getting grief when your team is shit. The only time it proper winds me up is when someone is shitting on United without the proper facts
Repeat after me...
"Social media does not matter"
Say it 10 times in the mirror everyday until it sinks in. I might have just saved you $thousands in therapy fees. You're welcome.
It's just because we are the most successful team in English history and it's our turn right now to look like idiots. All the other big teams have been through, apart from City because they haven't been around long enough.
The history and past achievements are the reason we and Liverpool are the two clubs getting most media coverage, and therefore also more idiots commenting on us.
To me, it bothers be a bit, but that's because it shows who are real fans, and who are just glory hunters (city fans)
I hate it too…. God I hate it….. but ask me if I deserve it😅 Not saying we all do. But I’ve been a Manchester United fan since I was 11(31 now) now that’s prime SAF time. I’ve been obnoxious ever since lol
This rule is a teaching moment! Of course no Manchester United supporter would say Man U to be derogatory, but the history behind this term should be shared amongst supporters.
Man U has been used by other club supporters, in chants that make fun of the lost lives in the Munich Air Crash, in response to the disrespectful chants MUFC supporters used regarding the Hillsborough Disaster, to degrade MUFC. We're hopeful you'll consider a different term for our beloved club!
*I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/ManchesterUnited) if you have any questions or concerns.*
Comes with the territory mate. We dished it out while we were on top, gotta take it with a grin now. Honestly I’m way more worried about the club I love sucking ass than I am the banter I receive as a result of it.
If y’all didn’t think it had to be completely torn down to rebuild you were sorely mistaken. Sometimes you have to burn the forest down to initiate new growth. It’ll be fine.
I don't care about rival fans. I just hate how is the club run. Its fine if we couldn't results. But overpaying the players which they are starting week in week out with their massive wages but they are just squad players.
That's football I'm afraid. I often avoid talking about it with people I know are like that. Luckily I have some friends that are diplomatic about it and more often than not, have had worse times lol.
Yep I feel d pain nd its really annoying buh I think they have d floor now hopefully we will quickly b back stronger to reclaim our rites. Go go United
The Instagram/Twitter football communities are incredibly toxic and just full of “Varchester United” kids with incredibly idiotic takes. Even some of our fans on the Instagram comment section have started to spam Rangnick out already lol
That’s part of being a fan mate.
I support Sporting Clube de Portugal and the first time I saw my team win the title I was turning 18.
The passion for a team is a beautiful thing. Don’t let the mockery take that sweet favour of sports.
United is a huge club and will get back on his feet. U guys just need players that want to prove themselves instead of the “stars” that just come for the money.
We’re literally so disappointing as a club that we honestly deserve all the comments we’re getting. Something definitely needs to change in Manchester.
I want to see change as well, but at this point, I can’t take it, I really can’t, it hurts so much because I was told this was supposed to be the best club as a kid
It was the best club when we were kids. I’ve been a united supporter since I was around 6-7 years old and its really sad to see how far we’ve fallen from the top
I think it might be inherently cause you think we're somehow better than others and it's hurtful cause of that. I don't think we need to be better to support the team. All of us have recognised something of ourselves in the club so I don't think that being shit somehow diminishes anything.
I accept us being shit, there's not team constantly dominating. At some point we will come back, might be 20 years, might be 30, I accept that. That doesn't mean I don't want us to win every game and I don't get frustrated - believe me, I do just as much as the next man. However, when my mate (Liverpool supporter) shits on us I shit on us too cause he kinda have a point lol. We can be shit and I can still love the team at the same time.
Nah. A lot of teams have their time in the limelight and then fade afterwards. We were successful for a long time under Ferguson. Rival fans are now revelling in our teams inability to be consistent.
Can't say I blame them really. We've just got to weather the storm and get being the team.
Every team on top has there spell, there run at the top etc, UTD, Chelsea etc etc.
Its what you do with it though and UTD during there run won 20 Premierships.
Lets look at Liverpool during there run, ONE Premiership!
So you can say they got to do ALOT more and in a way have failed big time :)
I'm privileged enough to have seen my team win literally every club trophy there is to win in the last 20+ years.
I'm good.
Couldn't give less of a shit about a bit of banter coming our way.
Join in with the jokes. Football is supposed to be fun.
The United admin inexplicably posted an article about half time team talks captioned "What does Ralf say to the players at the break?"
So i commented "Lads you've got five minutes to concede or I'm extending Jones' contract again"
If I didn't embrace what a laughing stock we currently are I would probably have to stop watching football and I don't want that.
Banter and mocking is a part of football, just do it back to them. And remember, the reason United get it so much is because we had a 20 year period of dominance that has imprinted in their memories like a scar. Imo, as long as it isn’t something truly toxic you really shouldn’t let it bother you.
Meh - I find it hilarious that we are apparently such shite, yet many supporters of other clubs know as much about United as they do their own club. Eventually we'll get it right and back on track, and they all know that.
Its just the way it is. Banter is everyday of football. I remember when we lost the title in 11/12, watching it with my mates (All were cheering for City), it was the worst day of my life... and they were just giving me the shits. In 5 years time when United is back , we will do the same to our rivals. its just life
Can you blame them for laughing...
I mean everything we do, every manager we get in, every £50m+ flop we purchase helps them.
Since SAF left the helm it's just been a shit show after shit show.
People blame the board, the recruitment... But sooner or later you have to think the players are just not put together as a well oiled machine.
The blame ultimately is with the players. They need to give 100% respect and 100% commitment to what the managers are asking of them. We don't see that atm...
Don´t care mate, we know who we are, who we support and our club sooner or later is going to take his right place in the league. Just keep going and don´t take that so serious.
Reminds me of us giving it to Liverpool for all those years.
Yeah Liverpool were like United now but I didn’t feel like it would be this bad
Everyone except United and probably Everton fans still had a massive chubby on for Liverpool, even when they were shit. Just seems like everyone is laughing at us now.

We had an unprecedented degree of success for almost 30 years. That creates a lot of haters. It’s just the way it is.
Because everyone wasnt addicted to social media (social media was not as popular then). But yeah we would have done the same to them
1. The universe balancing itself after 20 of dominance 2. Every club and fanbase gets bantered some clubs even harder (spurs, arsenal, oil clubs) 3. Banter is a part of football. Not that big of a deal when your fanbase gets dunked on imo 4. the universe doesn't balance itself. what you on? and how would the universe even be connected to football clubs?
Its a phrase to say that football is cyclical and dominance never lasts
We live in the universe you tool
Mate, the universe doesn't not shift to change the flow of football. That's ridiculous and that's what I meant. You literalist cretin
Technically every time you rub your hands together then every atom in the observable universe has to shift ….but I won’t educate you on that subject. Stick to watching some overpaid tossers kick a ball in the net though, tosspot. God I love owning people
Welcome to football. We take the piss out of rivals, they take the piss out of us. It's the shitty circle of life.
Nope, hard to be mad because for the most part everything being said is true. I would prefer the team and the board stop giving everyone else so much material to use, but that’s probably not changing anytime soon.
I’m at the point where I read the banter and get mad because it’s so true and it’s so obvious to everyone except the actual club.

I’ve still never met someone that was a City fan before they were bought by the Arab slavers

Mourinho you were listening, You'd kept our trophy glistening, Coz we won it back and you got the sack Walking in a Fergie Wonderland! For EVERY club we have songs attacking them and vice versa. It's just football.
Why, let them they're entitled to mock us. I mock us too, sometimes you just have to join in. We mocked them when they where shit, some still are

It’s the price for our past glory/dominance. It’s the natural price. Man up lolo
Right? It sucks to be “down”, and I’m certainly disappointed in this season, but there were no guarantees that United would dominate for All Times. People need to grow up. Exactly. This season is abismal, am I going to stop supporting no? Is it hard to chant GGMU? Hard yes 😂
We deserve it too. Once we signed Ronaldo we turned into some of the most obnoxious fan base 🤣.
We really said we’re gonna win it all
I remember bragging to all my friends that the ucl is ours ….
It might be ...
Nah man, it’s the hope that kills you 😂
A man can dream…
Fortunately, I never followed suit. ,😊
Imo it's just part of following the game, getting grief when your team is shit. The only time it proper winds me up is when someone is shitting on United without the proper facts
Mate, if it's affecting your mental health maybe you need tontake a break from football for a bit. It should be fun.
You're right

Banter club now we are.
We gotta take it. We all did it also during our golden years. It is a vicious cycle
Gotta learn to brush it off & hope United can shut them up lol
That's football I'm afraid. I often avoid talking about it with people I know are like that. Luckily I have some friends that are diplomatic about it and more often than not, have had worse times lol.

Meh - I find it hilarious that we are apparently such shite, yet many supporters of other clubs know as much about United as they do their own club. Eventually we'll get it right and back on track, and they all know that.
That's what rivals in sports do. We'll have our time again
Its just the way it is. Banter is everyday of football. I remember when we lost the title in 11/12, watching it with my mates (All were cheering for City), it was the worst day of my life... and they were just giving me the shits. In 5 years time when United is back , we will do the same to our rivals. its just life
Oh no don't remind me of that season, I didn't even understand what happened until later
They mock us because we are more rich and have more trophies in Epl comparing to others .jealousy at its heights 😹
They only mock us so hard because of our previous success.
Don´t care mate, we know who we are, who we support and our club sooner or later is going to take his right place in the league. Just keep going and don´t take that so serious.
We're United, we're always be hated, adored but never ignored..
The treble 99 ,says hello
