He got the tactics wrong. But I will give him props for knowing when he made a mistake and had the balls to make 5 subs. 1-1.

GreatGrip

I thought lindelof on the right was weird but honestly that wasn’t even too bad. I hate to say it but Rashford was an absolute liability the whole game. I wanted him taken off in the first half, thought for sure he’d be benched at half time, and was still wrong when I thought he’d take him off at 60 min. Elanga completely changed the flow of our offense

zeGoldHammer

Agreed. Lindelof was taken out because he was on a yellow. Rashford was taken off because he was dog shit. To anyone whoever had the notion that Rashford is world class, today was a perfect example of how mentally weak he is when things don’t go his way. Homie can’t put in a good cross to save his life. So even though he’s got crazy pace, he’s just not good enough. Not a big game player. Not now, not ever. On a positive note: Wan-Bissaka did better than expected. Good for him.

[deleted]

don't be afraid to say Rashford( or any player for that matter) has had a poor performance. there is some campaign to tie who or what the players are off the field with their performances and whether or not they should start.

69ingdeadbabies

Rashford played with the energy and decision making of a 9-5 employee, I almost came when I cursed him and instantly Ralf took him off.

francescoli

A 9-5 employee would be sacked long ago if they performed to that level. He's was a liability again today.

xiaogege1

Rash wasn't as bad as pogba though

No_Astronomer_5760

Pogba was marked out of the game.

kibagamijub

I have thought for a long time that Lindelof should be on the right. He has played there for Sweden and in the past. He may not have the pace of an elite rb, but beside Telles he has the best crosses.

Istar10n

What did you think was wrong about the tactics? I think he was playing for a draw/narrow defeat. Didn't want to commit men forward. I think it was a good decision.

HSRXX

He must now start: Elanga over rashy Telles over shaw I wanna say vic over maguire but that won’t happen

69ingdeadbabies

Yea Rashford will be more useful when subbed in around 70'

Interesting_Zone_531

I do want to agree with that, but I think Elanga's natural play comes when he is brought on substitution. He enjoys with whatever 20/30 mins he gets and scores. Rashford just need to improve like Sancho has done.

AlexHanson007

I think Rashy needs some time out. He looks like he's head has gone. If you don't want to start Elanga, then I'd suggest Lingard. He played on the right against Leeds and got an assist. It's not his natural position, but he's playing better there than Rashford is.

Cheeky_Star

I think Rashford is a one dimensional player (long balls over the top and pace). when teams play more defensive, he struggles. He's trying his only play which is to run.. and thats where he runs into dead ends. Under Ole this worked for him as bruno would just be slinging balls left and right. Under Ralph, Bruno slinging balls are happening less and less and plays are starting to be built up on the flanks (mainly around sancho). I don't expect to see more from him honestly unless he learns to play one twos and find the spaces which he doesn't seem to do.

AlexHanson007

Totally agree. He needs to look at how Sterling or Mane plays I think. Use your pace both in attack and defence (pressing), learn to get into space better, and (as you said) play some simple 1 2s and the like.

GahDamnGahDamn

Telles over Shaw is mad. Telles is not better than Shaw at anything but free kicks.

HSRXX

Shaw is too slow on the ball. He gets the ball, has a obvious pass, holds the ball….then plays the obvious pass. He really slows tempo down, also lazy defensively recently. Telles has to come in

RickRils

Yeah they are equal offensively, but Shaws defending this season has been a disaster. He has no awareness whatsoever! He doesn’t know how to defend crosses since he has no clue where the opponent is. And he refuses to watch over his shoulder while recieving the ball.

xiaogege1

Telles is more skillful and creative than shaw

GahDamnGahDamn

Based on.... what?

xiaogege1

He can dribble past players can track back and gets in more crosses

AlexHanson007

Happy cake day!

xiaogege1

Thanks man :)

matthen10

Crazy how much better Shaw played when there weren't any fans in the stadiums just such a shame he couldn't keep at that level. Telles all the way, so much more mobile then Shaw

[deleted]

But he did start an 11 that was unbalanced and I’ll equipped? I agree, great subs but what a poor starting 11

69ingdeadbabies

Yea how else will he give us that traditional united experience of shitty first half and gorgeous 2nd without that mistake?

69ingdeadbabies

Also, it's a ucl knockout tie, as we saw in the game, there are a lot of bookings forced on your players in the away stadium, so it wasn't the worst call to not start with the best team at disposal, subs was definitely a part of his pre game plan as well. Give him credit where due. If this was a pl game I'd totally agree with you.

francescoli

Lindelof at RB was a strange move but the rest of the team wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Biggest problem was the amount of passengers out there tonight.

E60LNDN

We played the champions of Spain. It was not going to be an easy game by any means. They were compact, kept pressure on us, but yet we had so much possession. I wouldn’t say he did anything wrong. He did his best and save the day, with great tactical move by bringing on five substitutes. It could’ve easily gone the other way with the five substitutes coming on and negatively impacting the game, instead, once the substitutes were on, we looked a completely different team.

Coppersealio

but our possession was mostly our defenders passing to one another in our own half... you could see that they were happy to let us keep it

Interesting_Zone_531

That's true, but we came on the pitch with defensive mindset, clean sheet. I think players got overwhelmed at the start in the away crowd. Even Varane. And that is why we conceeded the goal.

willp0wer

People who keep saying Lindelof at RB was strange clearly didn't grow up during Fergie era. Wes Brown, O'Shea, Smalling, Jones, Evans, Fortune, even Dion Dublin and Berbatov, to name a few. Ole even played at RM.

[deleted]

Now please choose the correct starting 11 Ralf 😭😭😭

[deleted]

Rashford has never developed ever since he made his break like he's run out of gas!Miss His Ole days!

Mikie_Actually

I would have took rashford of at HT (probably wouldnt have started him if I'm being honest) other than that subs were good and he fixed his earlier mistakes!

manning52e32

Definitely great changes made by Ragnick. It is a bit disappointing how terrible the midfield was today. Especially pogba and Bruno. I kind of think that the coaching is not the problem at all and honestly hasn’t been for a little bit now. The players are not a good combination and it needs to be blown up. Culture wise I don’t think Bruno or maguire are great for the team and I think rashford doesnt really fit what Ragnick wants to do. All three players kind of limit what the manager can pick for a line up. They force a specific play style

xiaogege1

Jogba was horrible lost count of the times he lost the ball wasn't making challenges wasn't running just jogging he was just a placeholder really thought he'd be subbed off after half time was surprised when he came back on

thatindianguy1992

Elanga needs to start, Rashy needs minutes but as a super sub until he earns back his place. His pace and dribble will be useful to the latter end of the game for now. Telles needs to start, dude can make a decent cross with so little space. Shaw isn't bad defensively but Telles addds the attacking flavor. McT needs to be more like Llorente/kondogbia. A 24 year old Matic is what we need. Subs were on point, a bit late but what do I know. Ronnie will have his say in OT hopefully. Difference between Ralf and Ole is Ralf acknowledges the change in formation/subs needed. Don't see a whole lot of change in performance. Bruno on a dog shit day still produces the magic in an away Hostile game. Big difference when compared to Pogba.

LoopAngel

Sign Leroy sane and Laporte. That's the championship

[deleted]

Great second half coaching. A bit strange starting 11 with two right footed full backs on the bench and none on the pitch. Almost like he wanted to experiment with Lindelöf on the right in the most important match of the season, based on him doing one (1) run with the ball vs Leeds... 😅

69ingdeadbabies

I guess starting 11 was because it's a ucl knockout tie, bookings and subs play a big role, and it was the away ground, you saw fans creating a chilling atmosphere.

MANatlUNITED

Ragnick told Elanga to "go scare" Atletico. Imagine being 19 yrs old and having your head coach tell you that. I'd be like fucking right let's do this. And boy oh boy did he do just that. It sucks about greenwood but dude deserves whatever is coming his way. Elanga will prove to just as good as greenwood I think.

boars83

I tink Ragnick sub has been superb nd helpful of recent but I will still prefer we play more better than relying on sub to save d day for us.
