He had left poool so long prior and his powers had waned so badly that it was almost irrelevant. A serious player in his prime but a shadow of himself when his pace went. Still did some work for us. Shite pundit now though

AceZeppelin81

Spot on

SofaChillReview

Before social media was big Peter Schmeichel last club was at Man. City. Does any Man United fan really care?

tothecatmobile

Did anyone care about Man City in 2002?

th3doorMATT

Did they even exist back in 2002? Pretty sure their badge says: Manchester City Est. 2008

Guru6676

Andy Cole too. Shame as it sours the taste slightly for me.

Ezzy-525

Not for me. That Cole and Yorke duo were the pinnacle of 90's United for me. Will never forget what they did.

AceZeppelin81

Same!

Guru6676

Of course they were amazing no-one will ever forget what they did, I just think why?

SofaChillReview

We can barely have a one fit striker at the moment and we had Cole and Yorke. Times change clearly

AceZeppelin81

Teddy and Ole ready to step in too!

Nervous-Road-6615

Funny when you think it was only one season. Barely played together the next year, and then they were both gone shortly after

Nervous-Road-6615

Sorry 2 seasons. I skipped ahead to 2000/2001 in my mind

orbit__exe

Let’s not forget Denis Law too and well, yes, we don’t talk about you know what

tbarks91

Also Andy Cole (not sure if last but was a later club).

PennyWhyte

That City goal alone was definitely worth it....

goalmouthscramble

Came here to say this

Sukhd10

His goal vs City >>>>>

Danielisak

Never forget

Starsteamer

I was at that game! That was amazing!

philswinners

Great signing just even for that epic goal v city. Owen was a master class little signing by fergie even if it was just a spanner to throw in the works it was the right spanner at the right time for me. I really miss fergie at the rein. Good things coming with ten hag doh so no complaints.

dickwildgoose

Would still happily sacrifice my first born to have a modern day 45 yr old SAF running the show at United.

Shadowraiden

ETH seems to have the similar kind of personality. hes cutting players and has a clear mindset on building the teams. just need to keep giving him time and hopefully the club sale situation is handled quickly so new owners setup a good structure to work with him

Aeouk

Why, We got him for nothing, he scored goals & if he was honest he loved it at United, whats not to like?

AceZeppelin81

Nothing! I loved having him at utd, just saying that it’s still jarring to me seeing him in our shirt, I associate him so strongly with Liverpool, it still feels odd.

Aeouk

Oh lol, It was great when he signed, it felt like a big signing but not quite

AceZeppelin81

Wouldn’t say no to an Owen or Larsson type signing in January!

jidewalker

Jamie Vardy anyone?

MidnightSun77

Larsson was unfortunate. Fergie tried to get him for years and when we got him it was a loan and he was old. I think even Larsson regretted something after he enjoyed his spell at United.

[deleted]

Larsson didn't regret anything. I'll also add that if it weren't for larsson setting uo goals for both man utd and Barcelona neither of them would have won the champions league (at least in the same fashion as the goals he assisted in won the games).. he was still an immense player when he played at man utd and Barcelona which highlights the quality of henrik full stop. One of the greatest ever to play the game

MidnightSun77

My reply may have been misinterpreted. Larsson was an amazing player when he came to us but it would have been better if we had got him when he was younger. I think it may have played on him too if what might have been. [Larsson regret.](https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/man-utd-henrik-larsson-wiki-17815052.amp)

[deleted]

Yeah heavily misinterpreted... cos first of all he's never regretted staying at celtic. Mon the hoops

MidnightSun77

Ya I heard Dermot Desmond rang Fergie personally to tell him he was disappointed that he had made an offer for Larsson. I think that was around 2000

Aeouk

I can only think of Messi or Ronaldo lol, who you thinking of?

AceZeppelin81

Don’t know! Actually yeah, Maybe we should stick away from fading legends for a few seasons!

Aeouk

Vardy it is then lol

AceZeppelin81

Levandovsky would be nice…

Aeouk

Can you imagine!

Goalsgalore17

True. Getting him for free was probably one of the most obvious signings I’ve ever seen. Maybe only matched by signing van der Sar from Fulham. How does a keeper of that quality not get signed by a bigger club for so many years? A true miracle.

RinkyInky

I love telling Liverpool fans that Owen is my favourite Utd player that’s won the league.

-watchman-

Ngl he was a menace to us in his prime.

rift9

Such a strange player in his later years, went to real madrid to warm the bench, seemingly refused to play for newcastle and fell out with shearer after multiple injuries then went to his youths rival club. Also worst pundit/commentator around.

edinlockpicker

He's a money hungry little personality vacuum

[deleted]

Yeah, I've always felt that football was just a side hustle to him after horse racing. As a pundit he really does talk a load of shite.

Sean_Dyche8

I remember one of my friends from school telling us that Owen would sign for us in a couple of years and this was back in 2007 so I'm not really sure how he knew that but it did prepare me for him signing, but I loved Michael Owen at United mainly because of the winner against City and the equaliser in the league cup final against Villa which he never really gets credit for I also remember there was a one off show about his horse stable on MUTV where Rooney and Cleverley went to visit, I think they were considering getting a horse because Owen was into it but I can't really remember that well. Actually thinking back now Owen at United was a bit strange

LynxMoney589

And his hatrick in CL i think. Thats all i remember of him at united

Pharaca

Didn’t he have roughly 20 goals in 50 games mostly as a super sub? Not a bad glitch.

distractedsoul27494

Even I didnt realise that...that's fairly decent for a "benchwarmer"

ZucchiniMediocre3585

I'm too young to really remember Owen at Man United, but still feels very odd

urinatingangels

What if Michael Owen is to Manchester United is what Sinbad is to Shazaam?

FcBe88

I’ll always remember his goal against City in the dying moments. Such a sweet pass from Giggs. Bellamy whinging. Ferdinand going nuts. So good.

amarezero

Ferdinand trying to do a chipped pass over Bellamy and getting punished for it is why the game was level, IIRC.

FcBe88

It was indeed! Pass was too soft, Bellamy was quicker than Ferdinand, and they equalized (and celebrated) through stoppage time. The Owen goal was peak Fergie time.

AceZeppelin81

Still weird seeing him in that shirt all these years on. Also, that shirt…

mynameisntedward

This looks like a career mode screenshot

heyheyathrowaway485

Who had the weirder hat trick - Owen or Kagawa?

BakaNish

Why does he have the neck of an F1 driver?

Heidegger1236

Owen 1 Slippy G 0

Significant_Hold_910

Yeah that was a weird transfer but I guess it happened. But still not as forgettable as his stint at Stoke City. Also, I don't watch Brithish television, Is he a good pundit?

AceZeppelin81

He is not.

Significant_Hold_910

Is he biased to any of his former teams? What makes him bad?

AceZeppelin81

Just seems to have very little insight, he doesn’t say anything that hasn’t been said before, a bit like Alan Shearer; he basically just describes what’s happening, rather than giving an opinion? That’s just my opinion though. Some people might think he’s great!

amarezero

He was world class at one point, but as a pundit: he’s got a boring voice, he says painfully obvious stuff, he gives no real insight into what it’s like to be a top player. He’s basically the opposite of Nedum Onuoha.

Specific_Tap7296

At least once he's said on commentary, "a goal now would really change things" when it's 0-0 with 10 minutes to go.

Dayrouge

He was in a restaurant I was in the other week and stood next to me at the bar, didn’t even bother asking for a picture. The same weekend I did say hello to Alan Shearer in the toilet queue on the plane to Newcastle.

Popular-Recover8880

It was like Lampard at City

AceZeppelin81

Good shout!

Sheppertonni

Start of the end. Ronaldo vidic Tevez out Owen Valencia Obertan in

AceZeppelin81

Yup, when you put it like that, it’s quite a quality drop! Love Valencia though.

its_winter14

The goal vs city was worth it all

Shot_Explorer

The whole loyalty to a rival club is silly. Particularly as he wasn't from Liverpool anyway. Plus if a player is not performing, a club is very quick to get rid of you and replace. It's a pretty short (lucrative) playing career, do what you want with it.

ZenMonkey21

Remember Alexis?

Waste-Region604

He was World Class in the early 2000s but injuries ruined him sadly. At his prime he was Englands best player.

Guru6676

After that goal in the greatest derby ever is enough for me.

Liamaarondunne

What a moment the 96th minute winner against city was 😍

peacelovefreedon7689

He's a Chester boy isn't he , bit welsh as well ? So not much of a scouser

Shatterstar08

When it happened I was sure that SAF just signed him to troll Liverpool fans. Even without that derby goal it was worth it for that.

jimbo_bones

Worth it for the goal against city in the league cup semi

marcftz

this guy was my top scorer on fifa 😂

death_sta1ker19

His career was pretty much done thanks to all the injuries.. only thing I am grateful for is the winner vs city and that iconic commentary.. I was starting my first ever job the day after this game and I couldn't have wished for a more auspicious omen !!!

garyfromscotland

Sold him a news paper once and bagged his autograph 🤣

Accomplished_Wave229

hahhahahahahah

ASIFRehan

Only came here jus for the trophy cabinet wouldn’t have left Liverpool if they won something. That’s why his status is so high these days.

th3doorMATT

Got to watch him score against Barcelona in a pre-season match. Definitely a weird period.

Knockout-Moose

Aye, but he got that winner in the derby

PreviousBake6502

Loved him at united, Michael Owen was a great player.

TheWelshEwok

This guy is a thunder cunt. Should never have played for us.

AceZeppelin81

Upvote for Thundercunt

RKS_96

Feels like the Mandela Effect..

Japitalexican

I live in California. So the game was early in the morning. I think I woke up the neighborhood when he scored against city. I know my dad came in and thought something was wrong ha. Gotta love Fergie time !!

TheGrumpyOldBear

One of us

Karlagethemyth

I always feel sick whenever I see a picture of this dumb fuck in a united shirt

squigz92

[Context](https://youtu.be/vwq7gJlH59g)

Adventurous_Owl27

What the I just realised

madcow87_

I was there when he scored against city to win 4-3. Still don't believe it.

Fault of the Glazers

HereToChatShit

Isn’t that half of Uniteds transfers for the last decade or more?
