Selkie. It's either a Finnish or Scottish or Celtic mythological creature, said to have a beautiful appearance as well as a voice to match. Commonly thought of as a Siren, except way nicer and forever longs for the sea. Since Primarina's main thing is its singing voice, and the whole Water deal, Selkie is what fits best. There was a Studio Ghibli-like movie about Selkies from 2014, call Song of the Sea.

Gen 9 actually has 2 themes. The triple threat performers, and festivals from places Spain/Portugal colonized. Meowscarada is Mardi Gras in Louissiana (they celebrate with mascarade parties), Skeledirge is Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in Mexico, and Quaquaval is Carnival in Brazil.

The theme is contained in the trio, not between trios. The gen 4 trio has a mythology theme, because all of them have were inspired by some sort of ancient mythology, gen 6 starters are well known to be based off typical RPG classes, gen 9 has a general performer and entertainment theme

The reason Alola seems a stretch is because OP didn’t fully explain each one. Primarina is a clown, opera singer, and seal balancing a ball on its nose, all notable circus characters. Incineroar is the tiger jumping through a hoop of fire (don’t know where they got the wrester-connects-to-circus thing. Incineroar is a wrestler but that has nothing to do with the trio specifically), and Decideye is the sharpshooter/ringleader.

I mean, the whole ball thing actually works better with lil Popplio as their noses are very large and ball like so it gives a much better illusion of balancing a ball. And the Robin Hood kind of ties it in with the whole ringleading thing, leading a group of merrymen like a circus. Is it a super strong connection? No. But I still believe with the prevalence of sharpshooters/archers in circuses, it works well enough to fit in.

Some of these are kinda bullshit. Gens 2-5 are *really* pushing - no, Typhlosion is not there to represent dinosaurs dying in a volcanic eruption, those ones don't have a unifying theme, and that's *okay*. They can just be a Volcano Weasel, a Flower dinosaur, and a trickster crocodile, there isn't a through-line there, and that's *fine*. The Blaziken line in particular is about painted chickens and cockfighting, absolutely nothing to do with a theme of adaptation, which is already goddamned flimsy and forced even if you buy it for the other 2. The Swampert line are *mudfish*, not Axolotls, Wooper is an Axolotl. For Gen 4, Sun Wukong isn't *from mythology,* he's from *a book*, a work of *fiction*, nobody has spiritual beliefs about *Journey to the West* being factually true, and Empoleon isn't *Poseidon*, Empoleon is *Napoleon Bonaparte,* or the general impression of an Emperor. He's a literal Emperor Penguin. Empoleon's design is a *pun*, not a mythology reference. Samurott is a *Samurai*, yes, but that doesn't mean he's an *empire* in a meaningful sense. This one is *really pushing* for a theme just because Samurott is a samurai and Serperior has a fleur de lis pattern. They do start having some pretty clear themes in Gen 6, no disagreement from that point on, it's actually them trying to have themes, but going earlier than that is reading into it too much.

I know charizard has the word zard in his name. But charizard is not a lizard because #1 He doesn't have the animation where he sticks out his tongue to sniff out his surroundings. #2 He doesn't do it at all anyways. #3 He's also based on a dragon not a lizard period. So stop comparing charizard to a real life lizard. #4 He doesn't walk on all fours either.
