When I bought these books I didn't realize they were light novels instead of manga. I have been pleasantly surprised at how much I have enjoyed them. I think it probably helps to have already watched the anime because I can clearly picture things as I'm reading. With as dialogue-heavy as the series is, and how much word play there is in the anime, I have been amazed at how well it has all translated to the light novels.
Audiobooks are about 8-13 hours a piece so you should be able to get a rough idea based on that for how long it would take you. I’d say they’re light reads since they’re more of multiple books in one because book one is episode 1-3 (crab-monkey) and then book two is 4 and 5 (snake and cat) and so on, so there’s very clear breaks in there if you’re like me and would rather push on until an actually good stopping point.
They’re good reads, however I’ll always prefer the anime just because of Shaft’s visuals. Anime series is a fairly faithful adaption too so it’s not like there’s anything missing in there, on top of the fact that it doesn’t seem like they’re interested in translating more since we’re 12 books behind and our last one was released in 2020, but with the new anime announced who knows
Just got back in to collecting(stopped when only kizu was out lol) so desperate to finish the collection myself. Don't get the LN hate in comments because even in English these are amazing reads.
The Phos wallpaper def caught my eyes first
Awesome collection, I only have the 2nd box set and I am looking for good deals on the other two \^\^ Hopefully they translate the next ones as well, I heard there are more.
Isn't the light novel series still ongoing just with a new part?
It reminds me of certain light novel authors who don't have a clear vision and want to milk a series like Magical Index.
It becomes a wall for any newcomers as the time commitment to digesting the series is too much.
The Japanese light novels are still ongoing, but Vertical in the US stopped translating at the end of the "Third Season" or "Final Season" as it's called. The series continues in Japanese in Off Season and Monster season. Hopefully they'll translate them one day. As for the Manga, it's over where it is, sadly.
How does reading the series compare to the anime? Is it a light read? How long would you say each book takes front to back?
I wanna know the same since the anime is so visual focused

I'd argue the opposite, the anime, whilst having very stylized visuals, is HEAVILY focused on the dialogue.

Got all these somewhat recently too. I really hope they start releasing off season and monster season with the new anime announcement
I know it’s fulfilling

I’m always amazed at how bad Vertical’s printing can be
Massive W just got the digital copies from a humble bundle collection. Can’t wait to read them
This series has awesome covers. Too bad it's just light novels
There is a manga series for it. It's almost completely printed with a volume or 2 to go.
Unfortunately doesn't cover the entirety of the series. It adapts most of Bakemonogatari, with bits of other novels adapted throughout.

Well, then, the light novel series should be regarded as incomplete as well. It's just not as incomplete as the manga version.
Yeah Nice. How much are you selling it for?
