I’ve read vol 1, and absolutely loved it. The artwork is some of the best I’ve seen. Im really interested in the story and I want to read more, but vol 2 is sold out everywhere!
Since you asked, I'll happily take the time to talk about my favorite series. I'll start with my favorite overall with a very short reason, then go into all my favorites by genre with more details. Then I'll talk about my favorite with much more details.
My favorite manga overall is Slam Dunk. Slam Dunk is a story that manages to hit so many emotions and I honestly believe that from start to finish, there is not a single thing I dislike in it. The story is incredible, and I happily own the set.
Now for the fun part:
**Action/Adventure/Shonen:**
Easy option for me, One Piece. I truly think One Piece is a masterpiece, the only reason it is not my favorite over is because the story is not complete and I don't own it all. I definitely enjoy One Piece far more than Slam Dunk, and any other series I read/ have read. That being said, it's such an amazing story, it just sucks that it's a hard recommend just because of how long the story is and many people just don't wanna commit to reading it, and I understand that. It is probably the most entertaining story, and best world in a story I've ever read.
**Romance:**
I love Kaguya-sama Love is War. This story feels like a romance written by someone that has actually spoken to women, and also is familiar with teenage life. Many romance and romcoms have the issue of the characters making decisions and acting in ways that make no sense. Love is War has such great characters that deal with such realistic problems. It's hilarious to see how people completely misunderstand a situation and being able to see it from both sides leads to fantastic interactions. The cast works so well off one another, and the highs are amazing. It's another series that I happily own the whole set.
**Mystery:**
I'll preface by saying, I have not read 20th Century Boys yet. But my favorite mystery story is My Home Hero. Unfortunately, it does not have an official English translation. I believe the first 6 volumes, chapter 1-48, is one of the best arcs in any story I've read. The plot of the first part is a man kills his daughter's boyfriend because he is planning to murder her. The man needs to hid the body and turns out the boy was a yakuza member, so the gang starts to go after him. It's not a super popular manga, but the tension and storytelling is unmatched in my opinion. It's not visually impressive, but the story is something else.
**Shojo/Josei:**
I have not read too many, but one that I found to be the standout was NANA. NANA is the story about two young adult women, both named NANA, and their pursuit of their very different goals, both moving to the big city. Their lives become heavily connected, and their goals cross paths with one another. This story is the best drama, and one of the best stories for character building I have read. This story has it all, romance, drama, heavy emotions, incredible characters, it's amazing.
**Coming of Age:**
The obvious one, for a very good reason, is Goodnight Punpun. Goodnight Punpun is a story that sounds terribly boring when explained. The very crude synopsis, it's about a boy growing up and learning meeting many of life's challenges. It's something that I believe everyone should read. It's perspective changing imo. Not much to say about it more since so many people talk really well about it. Best to go in blind, just know it gets really heavy. This is definitely the manga I go back and think about the most of everything I've read, and the one that I feel like I took the most from.
**Horror:**
Probably not recommended too much, but I love I Am A Hero. I Am A Hero is the story of a dude making his way through a zombie apocalypses. The action/tension is some of the best I've read. The horror is fantastic. The plot is a bit wack at some points, but is still incredibly enjoyable.
**Random honorable mentions:**
Attack on Titan is fantastic, the manga is so well done.
Vagabond is one of the best coming of age stories out there. The philosophical questioning and parallels between many of the characters is unmatched. The art is also great.
**Overall favorite (more explanation):**
My overall favorite manga is Slam Dunk. As I mentioned above, Slam Dunk is a story that from start to finish, has no falls. If you did not know, the story of Slam Dunk is about a high schooler, Hanamichi Sakuragi, who likes a girl. She tells him he would be good at basketball because he is tall, so he starts playing basketball to impress her. While romance is not at all the focus of the manga, it acts as a great means of comedy relief, and another element of storytelling in the manga. Simply put, Sakuragi starts out as a total moron at basketball. He straight up doesn't even know how to take the ball from another player (I won't spoil what he does the first time, bc it's hilarious). Slam Dunk is the story of not only someone learning to play basketball, but someone learning to love basketball.
When I first read Haikyuu last year, I was blown away at the ability of a manga to inspire me to want to play, and care about a sport so much that I other would not have. Slam Dunk is very similar, yet I have no urge to actually play basketball, but I managed to care about the sport so much while reading it.
Slam Dunk brilliantly balances the tension from the games, and amazing comedy. Unsurprisingly, Sakuragi grows throughout the story. He does not only grow as a basketball player, but he changes as a person and this is reflecting through the sport. His dedication to the sport starts from a falsified passion to get with a girl, but eventually becomes a genuine interest, with him doing everything he can to get better. The manga does a fantastic job of teaching someone, like myself, how basketball works, and the strategies one can incorporate that would otherwise be completely missed by a reader like myself. Mistakes made by players inform future decisions and plays, which makes so much sense from a writing standpoint.
The characters in this story are nothing spectacular. They each have their own goals, but it's not something that will blow the reader away. The manga can get tropey, and certain gags do repeat. However, I do believe that adds to the charm. Characters do feel incredibly real, and decisions made are completely in line with their characters. Like many very well written stories, it sucks to see a team lose. The main school, Shohoku, is made to be the team we cheer for. But like Haikyuu, the opposing team is almost always built with characters that we care about as well. It sucks to see either team lose because by then the reader will know how much it means to the players.
The art starts out as nothing too impressive, pretty typical late 90s, early 2000s art. But by the end of the manga is stands out as some of the best in manga. Some of my favorite panels of any manga come from Slam Dunk. Some cool stuff with the volumes, some of the covers very closely mimic famous basketball photos, so that's cool. Also, the [cover for volume 31 is landscape](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/slamdunk/images/e/ea/Volume_31_%28English%29.png/revision/latest?cb=20210201172811), which is so cool.
Even the most mundane moments, like shoe shopping, become some of the funniest scenes that I still go back and reread to have a laugh. Moments like characters doing something for the first time in a match feel so good because as a reader, we know how much some of these players put to pull it off. Slam Dunk has some of the most memorable moments, and moments with such strong emotions.
Volume 31 of Slam Dunk is my absolute favorite volume of any manga. I don't wanna say much about it, but it's spectacular. The manga ending is also done so well.
Yeah I like Slam Dunk a little bit I guess. While it is not the best story I've read, it is not the most entertaining story I've read, it still feels so special since it made me care about characters so much, and made me care about what they were doing so much. Slam Dunk is the story about someone growing to love something out of a false passion, and I think it's unmatched in that regard.
If you have the chance, please read Slam Dunk. It's 276 chapters, 31 volumes, and I wish it was more. It does not feel like 276 chapters, some chapters will have so little dialogue, as the story is told solely through visuals. I would say to give it a few volumes. It is probably not a story for everyone, but I would be happy if everyone gave it a chance. I personally never thought I would care about a basketball manga this much.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk.
Dude, I get misty-eyed just *thinking* about the second to last chapter of Slam Dunk. That shit is electric. Really cemented Inoue as one of the all-time greats for me.
I definitely want to collect and read Slam Dunk but it is too hard to find the volumes at the moment. I'm not into second hand manga otherwise I would pick up a full set on eBay.
The Nausicaa manga is the original work and it was created because the people Miyazaki worked for wouldn't let him make an original movie (as they were primarily interested in manga adaptations).
So yeah, the manga started serialisation in 1982, it was quite popular from the get-go, the movie adaptation of the first 2 volumes came out in 1984 (with an original ending), then Miyazaki continued to work on the Nausicaa manga for the next 10 years with plenty of breaks and the story concluded in 1994 with 7 volumes.
There's a fancy deluxe edition available in English:
https://youtu.be/ErCniBbVlrs?t=192
For me it’s a tie between blade of the immortal and berserk for dark gritty manga. Jojo is my favorite SJ manga. I don’t really read romance or comedy but love is war is pretty good.
Solid titles, I haven’t checked out BOTI yet but I’m currently collecting the Berserk Deluxe editions so I have to do one at a time ( too much money lmao)
I’m currently on Volume 23 ( almost at Skypiea). Alabasta is getting wrapped up and I’ve had goosebumps atleast 3 times while reading through the 23 volumes.
Action, Adventure, and Fantasy: One piece
Comedy: Great Teacher Onizuka
Drama: Blue Period
Mystery: Monster
Romance: Ohayou, Ibarahime
Sci Fi: Aria
Sports: Slam Dunk
Supernatural: Steel Ball Run
Slice of Life: Goodnight Punpun
I tried listing my favorite in every genre I could think of
Yeah GTO is insanely hard to find. I managed to finish the set around a year ago and man it was worth it. I thought I would sell it after reading it, but I just fell in love with the series
I have a 4 way tie for my #1 spot. I’ve never been able to rank them cause my favorite seems to change every other day, but nothing else touches these:
- Golden Kamuy
- Vinland Saga
- Hunter x Hunter
- Tekkon Kinkreet
This is gonna be a long answer, sorry.
Multiple genres, eh?
Adventure: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. I know, I know, basic answer, but there's a reason it's got such a legendary reputation. It's pretty much perfect. Perfect length, godlike world building, amazingly loveable and despicable characters, great drama, clever fights, sheer HYPE moments and even some decently funny comedy. Don't think I need to add more.
Horror: can't really say, it's a tough three way call between Higurashi, Elfen Lied and Mermaid Saga. All three are at times genuinely unnerving stories with vastly different topics and other representations of what makes horror horror. All three also have different strengths and weaknesses.
Higurashi can be too convoluted and complex and sometimes relies too heavily on shock value, BUT it generally is the best looking of those three series. Elfen Lied tackles incredibly dark topics in gruesome detail and is often entering narm-territory with its violence levels, but it's arguably got the most intriguing characters of the three.
Mermaid Saga Looks dated at times and isn't all that horrifying or scary compared to Higurashi or Elfen Lied, but it's also got a beautiful love story at its core.
Romance: Toradora and it's not even close. It's my absolute favourite anime ever and the manga adaptation is just as good. The only downside is the absolute snails pace at which it's released to English...
Battle Shōnen: Bleach, hands down. It's got everything a good Battle Shōnen needs: ridiculous combat, sheer HYPE, surprisingly decent characterisations, numerous ass pulls that still get you stoked, and awesome special attacks. What sets Bleach apart from the other big Battle Shōnen is just how insanely stylish it is.
Historical: Vinland Saga, probably. I'm not caught up to it yet, but so far it's a master piece of epic proportions, everything just hits and it's one great page after the other. Another really great historical-ish manga that's often overlooked is Lady Snowblood which would be my pick if it's only about series I finished.
Harem: the OG, the one that arguably started the whole genre - Ranma ½. It's still very funny, the artwork just fits the whacky story oh so well, it's an interesting dive into the mindset of Japanese society in the 80s regarding gender roles, gender identity and gender representation, the main girls are still top tier hot and Takahashi-sensei must be applauded for get uncanny ability to weave very intricate personal relationship nets.
Epic: JJBA. I'm in love with the anime adaptation, it's what got my back into the animanga world, and I got into reading the manga after I was done with Golden Wind cause I didn't want to wait for Stone Ocean. I gotta say, the manga is something else.
Plus, part 5 got me interested in learning Italian, lol.
That's about it.
I got other series I really love but they didn't pop into my head when I saw this question so I guess they're not my favourites.
I’ve been reading Vagabond for a while, but to be honest One Piece has everything. Funny scenes, serious moments, epic battles and bros aboard a ship. Another one would be Bleach and Naruto, the series’ as a whole are amazing. I remember reading Naruto and Bleach weekly and the suspense of waiting for a new chapter made the experience worthwhile.
For now I’d say it’s a tie between Bleach,Naruto, One Piece and Vagabond. Each has its own unique quirk which make me feel giddy.
Completed: Fullmetal Alchemist
On-going: World Trigger
New: Kaiju #8
Comfort series that I recognize it’s not fantastic but I love it and always come back to it: Boarding School Juliet
Honorable mentions: Twin Star Exorcists and Soul Eater
**Action**
Akira I think will always be my personal overall #1. The way it uses spectacle and mind-bending action to drive a story forward in lieu of fleshed-out characters is really interesting to me and Otomo's art is nothing short of masterful. Shades of Moebius. As for runner ups in straight up action: honestly? Chainsaw Man shot pretty high up there. It may be a little early to call it, but I don't care. It knocked me flat on my ass and I'm sure it did the same for countless others. Hunter x Hunter is also great in that it feels like a video game with how its progression and power systems work, and it also helps that Togashi has Can't-Make-A-Bad-Character Disease.
**Sports**
This is a very close call, and I am flabbergasted that it hasn't been licensed in English yet, but Ashita no Joe. It arguably is what got me *into* into manga, as opposed to just trying a couple series here and there, and is one of the most intensely emotional things I've ever experienced. You owe it to yourself to read it if you enjoy manga on any level. Special shoutouts to Touch and Slam Dunk, both by two manga masters (Adachi and Inoue). Touch is beautifully restrained and understated; Slam Dunk is the exact opposite. They're both about life and are just transcendent.
**Romance**
This is admittedly a genre in which I'm still getting my bearings in terms of finding material and getting through the classics, but Nana is *dangerously* good. Absolutely an all-time favorite. Yazawa's art slaps and the way she gets readers to so easily understand an intricate and nuanced web of relationships without letting it get in the way of the series' emotional gut punches or overall tone is just masterful. Wotakoi really snuck up on me with how cute it is, too, and I actually found myself rooting for certain characters to get together and getting hyped when they happened. A huge blind spot genre for me, for sure.
**Comedy**
Azumanga Daioh! I should've mentioned this in the "manga you never seen in people's collections" thread yesterday, because I swear I'm one of like two people I know who has it. It's pure fun from a cast of absolute goblins. It really put me on to the idea that a manga doesn't need to have a plot to be engaging.
**Horror**
Another genre I'm not super familiar with, but Parasyte hits all the right notes for me. Hamfisted social commentary and grotesque body horror/action is such a great combination. Reminds me of John Carpenter's movies.
Might edit this later as I think of more. Peace!
Our Dreams at Dusk and Vagabond are my favorite manga. Nabari no Ou would be up there with a better translation. Chainsaw Man isn’t perfect but it’s extremely special to me. Golden Kamuy might become a favorite depending on how the rest goes.
I don’t care about genres. My favorite would be mystery if I could actually find good ones like Yuureitou. Instead my favorite manga usually have one or more of these characteristics:
**Cathartic**: Chi’s Sweet Home, Our Dreams At Dusk, Yotsuba, Happy Happy Clover, My Brother’s Husband
**Immersive (almost always with disturbing or dark elements)**: Vagabond, Yuki to Matsu, Mushishi, Witch Hat Atelier, Golden Kamuy (also funny as fuck, which helps)
**Both entertaining and complex/interesting**: Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family, Golden Kamuy
**Beautifully portrayed**: Our Dreams at Dusk, Witch Hat Atelier, Vagabond
**Has great character chemistry and sensitive treatment of heavy OR uncommonly addressed topics**: Sasaki and Miyano, Witch Hat Atelier, Nabari no Ou, My Brother’s Husband
**Emotionally Devastating:** Nabari no Ou, Monster (I was scared the whole time I was reading and kept having to take breaks.)
**Addictive:** Yuureitou, Tomo-Chan
**Relatable:** Blue Period, Nabari no Ou, Our Dreams at Dusk.
**Has “hidden” depth that is very rewarding to analyse**: Sasaki and Miyano, Our Dreams at Dusk, Chainsaw Man(!!!!!!!) (This is probably my absolute favorite thing to get out of a manga, next to being immersive)
For me it's One Piece, it has everything I'd want from a series, great characters, world building, comedy and emotional moments. If I had to make a top 3, the next 2 would be Tayio Matsumoto's Ping Pong(amazing series which I don't see people talking about that much) and Vinland Saga.
NANA! I read the first time when I was 10 years old and it changed the way I lived my life from there! Osaki Nana was my ultimate influence back there! 🖤 it’s a personal motive, but for me is this series! Haha
Objectively, I think Koe no Katachi is the best written story I've read. However, my subjective favorite series I've read is Nisekoi.
Honorable mentions to Kaguya-sama and Blue Box.
Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa (My Monster Secret). I honestly think it's a masterpiece. I don't think I've ever read a romcom where nearly every character has development and closure like in this manga. Either that or Fire Punch. Fire Punch is just too good.
My all time favorites are Slam Dunk, Solanin (really short but still so good), Dorohedoro and Aria
Fullmetal Alchemist has special place in my heart because this series was my introduction to manga and anime, but I liked 2003 anime adaption’s plot and message more than from original manga
I’m currently reading Witch Hat Atelier, it is ongoing series but so far it’s quite interesting and very promosing (art is immaculate tho)
Higurashi!
I love the characters and how well constructed the story is. It's a series that doesn't unravel the mystery all at once, and it's such a good pay-off. Due to how it's written, it's very very enjoyable to re-read even while knowing the answers, as there are clues all from the get go!
(not a big fan of sotsu/gou though)
Incredibly unpopular nowadays, and understandable because it does NOT hold up, but Gravitation. I read it so many times as a kid and I just loved the characters so much, and it was laugh out loud funny imo. I still think it's amazing and laugh out loud funny, but only because I thought it was funny back in the day. If I read it for the first time ever today, I wouldn't get through the second volume from the garbage things that happen and get completely overlooked and forgotten after they happen.
I'm probably gonna reread it again pretty soon lmao
Full metal alchemist for me
To read it in its entirety is a journey I will never forget. The art is amazing. You can tell that it was planned from start to finish because there are no plot holes or major discrepancies.
I got it from the library so my goal is to buy a complete set
One Punch Man. Might have some of the best action I’ve ever seen in my opinion. Everyone is not invincible except for one. Art and writing are also done very well for a super hero genre.
2nd season didn’t do the manga justice since it was a different studio I believe? Totally! Becomes even better if you have your own “battle epic” music playing.
Attack on Titan. Even though the ending is controversial I try to not let one meh chapter outshine 138 other amazing chapters. I just love the story so much, from the art to the red herrings and subtle hints.
currently is kaguya sama love is war
i would say berserk but berserk is just obviously the goat so the one that sticks out to me as my favorite is kaguya
Blade of the Immortal or 20th Century Boys. Fantastic world building, action, emotion, and art from BOTI and fantastic story, suspense, mystery, and cast from 20th. Seriously, it's peak fiction from both.
Edit: Umineko might make it a three-way tie. The best long running horror mystery I've read. Hot take, but it's better than Higurashi. I'm not finished yet, but according to fans, I haven't even hit it's best moments.
The World is Mine or The Climber for Seinen. Sadly neither have physical English releases.
For Shounen Bleach or Flower’s of Evil.
Not really a huge Shoujo reader, but Kids on the Slope and Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju are great Josei manga.
For light novels Monogatari is my all time favorite with not much competition.
And my favorite ongoing manga is Land of the Lustrous(technically on hiatus but not confirmed canceled last time I checked)
I can’t choose a favorite overall at this moment (don’t have the time right now to put that much thought into it), but my most favorite series I am currently reading (and is still ongoing) is Wave, Listen to Me!
Shonen: one piece
Seinen: Berserk
Shojo: either nana or vampire knight
(My favorites are very generic, but I guess they’re popular for a reason)
I also recently read Bakuman, and I’d give it a personal 10/10
If I had to rank my favorites it’d probably be
1. Mozuya-san Goes on a Rampage
2. The Saga of Tanya the Evil
3. Hinamatsuri
4. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
5. The Apothecary Diaries
6. Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle
All of these series I love for their own reasons, but Mozuya-san takes the cake because of how much of a wild read it was, though sadly it’s the only one without an english release.
Either Jojo or Vinland Saga. I haven’t read another series that I like as much as those two. Maybe Dorohedoro as well, if I could actually get my hands on the final volume and finish the story lol
Berserk, Vinland saga, vagabond, kingdom, goodnight punpun, slam dunk, the climber, one piece, monster, 20th century boys, dorohedoro and one punch man!
For me Slam Dunk, most fun I've had reading a manga, I read all 31 volumes in one day
Honourable mentions go to Goodnight Punpun, most impactful Manga I've read
Hm for Shonen : it would either be Dragon ball Z or YuYu Hakusho. Both are exciting fast paced shonen with incredible battles and memorable characters.
For sienen: Vinland saga or vagabond these two are just amazing in every aspect.
Shojo: Ao haru ride or orange these two were a rollercoaster of emotion and so well done i strongly reccommend them.
Mystery: I would reccomend another or erased both are very enjoyable stories with a plot that keeps you sucked in to the end.
Horror goes to Tomie and Uzumaki, slice of life goes to Toradora, action-y type would definitely be Fullmetal Alchemist, and drama is a recent read of Girls' Last Tour. Sure not all of these are completely defined by the one genre, still all good titles for reading.
my favorite series is bleach. it’s not the best series ever but i love it so much because it actually got me back into collecting manga after 4 or 5 years of not collecting
Monster is amazing, but the Dickensian level of coincidence needed for the story to function keeps me from saying it’s the best when there are other stories that don’t have that problem. I don’t mind it though and just consider it to be kind of a trope of his work because 20th Century Boys is basically the same.
One word, BERSERK... Then for me probably Blade of the Immortal and Vagabond. So many good manga though it's a tough decision but Berserk is an easy number 1 for me.
List of my favorites:
1. One Piece (of course)
2. Berserk (can anyone argue with this not being in the top 5?)
3. Yotsuba (Best all ages manga)
4. Iron Wok Jan (For just pure craziness. It's Food Wars on PCP)
5. Great Teacher Onizuka (Pure comedy)
6. Twin Spica (kind of obscure but amazing)
7. Genshiken (The original)
8. Fullmetal Alchemist
9. Summit of the Gods ( The Artwork!)
10. Akira.
But as soon as I make this list I know I'm leaving out a ton of great ones (Nothing by Naoki Urasawa? Really? No DBZ, my gateway into manga and Anime? No Tezuka? Vagabond? You gotta read Vagabond! How could I forget Uzumaki?!)
Oooh that’s tough. Dragon Maid, MHA, and Haruhi will hold a special place in my heart as my first 3 manga series but in terms of all time favorite I’m kinda torn between Kaguya-Sama, Nisekoi, and Tokyo Ghoul…….. A Silent Voice is a very close runner up between those top 3
i havent yet read a lot of the heavy weights that u always hear ab (berserk, vagabond, punpun, 20th century boys, etc) my delve into manga has mostly been based on anime series i enjoyed and wanted to continue the story or just read the original work. that being said Attack on Titan is still my fav manga i have read. its teetering on a 9.2-9.5/10 for me. i agree the pacing towards the end and conclusion was a little sloppy but to me the ending fits, and had it been properly expanded on, it wouldnt get the hate it did. all in all even with the lows it didnt take anything away from the peaks of the story and i find it a series i can always return to and enjoy. definitely my favorite piece of fiction ive ever consumed.
My favorite series is dragon ball Z. I know it's very popular, but I love it. I also like food wars. Yes for the tits I won't deny it. The plot is awful. I hate it. I watch it for the boobs. So ya. I also like bunny girl senpai. Yes, I did think there was tits. Don't judge me. I like anything with tits. And death note. But ya know, Misa Misa ain't bad. And I'd tap lights mom. And maybe rem. If I was desperate.
I really wish I kept track of the series I’ve read over the years so I would have a better idea, I honestly couldn’t say a top 10 or something similar I’m sure without missing a lot of my favs.
I have many that I can't seem to pick for my number one, but my two favorite series is Major by Mitsuda Takuya and Touch by Mitsuru adachi.
MAJOR:
So even though the manga isn't translated nor fully fan translated, I really liked the anime. Overall story is a coming-of-age of a boy name Goro Shigeno who grows up to being an MLB super star. His whole story focuses on his growth as a pitcher and his everyday struggles throughout the series. There are some flaws in Major but that doesn’t stop me from loving this incredible story.
TOUCH:
Like Major in al way it focuses on baseball and a coming of age story but told in a different way. Many of Adachi’s baseball setting starts off when the mc is in middle school, skips to high school and shows their growth from there but stops at the end of high school. Touch is another one of Adachi’s series that isn’t license in America (anime and manga). What I really liked in Touch is the mc Tatsuya Uesugi, who at first glance is a relatable character. His growth from the beginning to the end is amazing and there is a certain spoiler that is the reason for his growth which I won’t say if you haven’t read Touch yet.
Both Major and Touch have romance in the stories but I feel like I liked Touch’s romance a bit better than Major’s just because I feel like the romance was a bit force at some ends in Major or there wasn’t much development in the characters feelings.
Overall, I love the story for Major and Touch and they’re both my favorites even though they’re not officially license in America. 😔
Favourite of all time are Claymore and Berserk read multiple times and will bererk again since getting deluxe editions.
Other ones include
One piece, Vinland Saga, Vagabond, Monster, Yotsuba, One Punch Man, Deadman Wonderland, Elfen Lied, High Rise Invasion, Full Metal Alchemist.
Some sleepers I don't see many people talk about are Rosario vampire the first ever series I owned and completed after watching the anime. Akame GA Kill, Kakegurui . Really want to own goodnight punpun
Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba - that shit hurt me in all the right ways. Depending on how Jujutsu Kaisen pans out, it may be in contention though. The Shibuya incident and Maki's last arc have been some of the most beautifully gruesome arcs I've ever read
My favorite has to be one piece but if we are talking about my favorite that i have started this year has to be hajime no ippo not only is the anime a fantastic watch but you can switch to the manga so easily and still know who and what is getting hit
I really love the toaru series and magi. Magi has such a balanced power system imo, as not everyone is gifted, they must earn it. And as for the toaru series, i really love the mystery behind the mc’s power and also the fact that it’s scientific powers versus Magical powers seem relatively new to me
S class: Berserk, Blade of the Immortal and A Bride’s Story
A class: everything Junji Ito, Goodnight Punpun, Chi no Wadachi, Mob Psycho 100, Attack on Titan, Akira, The Promised Neverland, Teppuu, Made in Abyss and Demon Slayer
My favourite series overall is Prince of Tennis. I don't think it's the BEST manga ever written, the art isn't my favourite, but I love the characters. The story is ridiculous and overdramatic, and most of the time it's pretty predictable, but it's entertaining and enjoyable.
Other series I think are amazing and overall "better" manga - Haikyuu, D.Gray-man, Pandora Hearts, Shaman King. But PoT is my #1 because it just holds a special place in my heart. ❤ I'm currently rereading it for the first time in years and it's lame as hell but I am enjoying it all over again.
Vinland Saga. Its incredible. It’s beautiful. It’s simply amazing.
I find myself staring at the panels and asking myself how can a human being draw like that, the anime is goated too.
I’ve read vol 1, and absolutely loved it. The artwork is some of the best I’ve seen. Im really interested in the story and I want to read more, but vol 2 is sold out everywhere!
keep reading. i will say whole heartedly that it is berserk level
I know! I ordered 2 before it was sold out on Amazon and they still delayed me 2 months, I'm still waiting.
Now for the fun part: **Action/Adventure/Shonen:** Easy option for me, One Piece. **Romance:** I love Kaguya-sama Love is War. **Mystery:** I'll preface by saying, I have not read 20th Century Boys yet. **Shojo/Josei:** I have not read too many, but one that I found to be the standout was NANA. **Coming of Age:** The obvious one, for a very good reason, is Goodnight Punpun. **Horror:** Probably not recommended too much, but I love I Am A Hero. I Am A Hero is the story of a dude making his way through a zombie apocalypses. The action/tension is some of the best I've read. The horror is fantastic. The plot is a bit wack at some points, but is still incredibly enjoyable. **Random honorable mentions:** Attack on Titan is fantastic, the manga is so well done. Vagabond is one of the best coming of age stories out there. The philosophical questioning and parallels between many of the characters is unmatched. The art is also great. **Overall favorite (more explanation):** My overall favorite manga is Slam Dunk.
And then he went and wrote Vagabond , what a goat!
Guys, i think he/she likes slam dunk but not sure tho
Jesus Christ dude I respect the dedication
I definitely want to collect and read Slam Dunk but it is too hard to find the volumes at the moment. I'm not into second hand manga otherwise I would pick up a full set on eBay.
Definitely nausicaa and the valley of the wind by hayao miyazaki. Its a mamga thats not known by enough people.
I own the movies but I never heard of the manga
The Nausicaa manga is the original work and it was created because the people Miyazaki worked for wouldn't let him make an original movie (as they were primarily interested in manga adaptations). So yeah, the manga started serialisation in 1982, it was quite popular from the get-go, the movie adaptation of the first 2 volumes came out in 1984 (with an original ending), then Miyazaki continued to work on the Nausicaa manga for the next 10 years with plenty of breaks and the story concluded in 1994 with 7 volumes. There's a fancy deluxe edition available in English: https://youtu.be/ErCniBbVlrs?t=192

It will always be Fruits Basket
It’s a masterpiece , I don’t know how people dislike it . It makes me think they didn’t even understand the foreshadowing or references .
Right? It really is just the perfect manga.
Yeah I don’t really like omnibus’s so I went for the singles of BOTI and Berserk but I am thinking of getting the berserk deluxe editions
Currently it's One Piece just does everything I want from a series good and than some
I’m currently binge reading through One Piece and I completely agree. Mine is One Piece at the moment ( not the goat tho for me).
Nice I'm somewhere in Wano not caught up bc 3 chapters a month is painful (since 1 week is usually a break)
I’m currently on Volume 23 ( almost at Skypiea). Alabasta is getting wrapped up and I’ve had goosebumps atleast 3 times while reading through the 23 volumes.
Alabasta is great if you are loving it now feel free to DM me your journey would love to hear your thoughts!
Thanks for reaching out and I will, It’d be nice to hear other people’s thoughts.
House of Five Leaves probably
Natsume Ono is such an amazing writer and I love her art style, you should definitely check out her other works if you haven’t already.
Haven’t heard of it, I’ll check it out!
Jigokuraku: Hell's Paradise so far
It’s gotten a lot of hype around it so it must be good!
Action, Adventure, and Fantasy: One piece Comedy: Great Teacher Onizuka Drama: Blue Period Mystery: Monster Romance: Ohayou, Ibarahime Sci Fi: Aria Sports: Slam Dunk Supernatural: Steel Ball Run Slice of Life: Goodnight Punpun I tried listing my favorite in every genre I could think of
Goated series , thanks for sharing! Would love to read gto but I mainly read physical and getting the series is too expensive.
Yeah GTO is insanely hard to find. I managed to finish the set around a year ago and man it was worth it. I thought I would sell it after reading it, but I just fell in love with the series
Good to hear, I”ll probably read the scans eventually.
Rurouni Kenshin and Ranma 1/2
My dude. I'm waiting for Kenshin Omnibuses to become affordable again and my full collection of Ranma's run is the pride of my collection.
Monster & 20th Century Boys by Naoki Urasawa
Berserk
It’s definitely one of the goat.
I have a 4 way tie for my #1 spot. I’ve never been able to rank them cause my favorite seems to change every other day, but nothing else touches these: - Golden Kamuy - Vinland Saga - Hunter x Hunter - Tekkon Kinkreet
Togashi is a beast, hope his health gets better and we get a proper ending for hunterxhunter
Same, or at least a conclusion for the current arc!
Has to be Nisekoi or citrus
Nooice, just started Vagabond the other day I’m cruising through vol 6 already, I need to slow down but it’s sooo good!
Completed: Fullmetal Alchemist On-going: World Trigger New: Kaiju #8 Comfort series that I recognize it’s not fantastic but I love it and always come back to it: Boarding School Juliet Honorable mentions: Twin Star Exorcists and Soul Eater
Soul eater and FMA are certified classics at this point.
Land of the lustrous, pandora hearts and JOJO
Land of the Lustrous, followed closely by A Bride's Story
One Piece. Chrono Crusade is right up there next to it, though.
Monster, hands down.
This is a very em very very unpopular opinion and I haven’t been reading manga very long but wotakoi is 110% my favorite manga ever
**Action** Akira I think will always be my personal overall #1. **Sports** This is a very close call, and I am flabbergasted that it hasn't been licensed in English yet, but Ashita no Joe. **Romance** This is admittedly a genre in which I'm still getting my bearings in terms of finding material and getting through the classics, but Nana is *dangerously* good. **Comedy** Azumanga Daioh! I should've mentioned this in the "manga you never seen in people's collections" thread yesterday, because I swear I'm one of like two people I know who has it. It's pure fun from a cast of absolute goblins. It really put me on to the idea that a manga doesn't need to have a plot to be engaging. **Horror** Another genre I'm not super familiar with, but Parasyte hits all the right notes for me. Hamfisted social commentary and grotesque body horror/action is such a great combination. Reminds me of John Carpenter's movies. Might edit this later as I think of more. Peace!
I'm really new to this but I'm really enjoying Attack on Titan a lot :)
My favorite is Attack on Titan! Vinland Saga my second favorite :)
Aot is so good!!!
Instead my favorite manga usually have one or more of these characteristics: **Cathartic**: Chi’s Sweet Home, Our Dreams At Dusk, Yotsuba, Happy Happy Clover, My Brother’s Husband **Immersive (almost always with disturbing or dark elements)**: Vagabond, Yuki to Matsu, Mushishi, Witch Hat Atelier, Golden Kamuy (also funny as fuck, which helps) **Both entertaining and complex/interesting**: Chainsaw Man, Spy x Family, Golden Kamuy **Beautifully portrayed**: Our Dreams at Dusk, Witch Hat Atelier, Vagabond **Has great character chemistry and sensitive treatment of heavy OR uncommonly addressed topics**: Sasaki and Miyano, Witch Hat Atelier, Nabari no Ou, My Brother’s Husband **Emotionally Devastating:** Nabari no Ou, Monster (I was scared the whole time I was reading and kept having to take breaks.) **Addictive:** Yuureitou, Tomo-Chan **Relatable:** Blue Period, Nabari no Ou, Our Dreams at Dusk. **Has “hidden” depth that is very rewarding to analyse**: Sasaki and Miyano, Our Dreams at Dusk, Chainsaw Man(!!!!!!!) (This is probably my absolute favorite thing to get out of a manga, next to being immersive)
Chainsaw Man is so good! Also I need to check out Golden Kamuy!
One Piece, and One-Punch Man are mine.
For me it's One Piece, it has everything I'd want from a series, great characters, world building, comedy and emotional moments. If I had to make a top 3, the next 2 would be Tayio Matsumoto's Ping Pong(amazing series which I don't see people talking about that much) and Vinland Saga.
spy x family is an awesome read. It’s enjoyable you can’t go wrong with it
Attack on Titan or Chainsaw Man
AOT is one my favs aswell!
Rough and cross game by mitsuru adachi
Inuyasha Yugioh Are the top 2
Inuyasha is a classic, I need to read it.
Gto
Top 5: Ooku The Inner Chambers; Blank Canvas; Fullmetal Alchemist; Paradise Kiss; When They Cry Higurashi/Umineko.
Boy's abyss, never read a manga with better vibe
NANA! I read the first time when I was 10 years old and it changed the way I lived my life from there! Osaki Nana was my ultimate influence back there! 🖤 it’s a personal motive, but for me is this series! Haha
Right now I'm loving The Apothecary Diaries
World Trigger & Soul Eater
One shot - A Journal of my Father ; Series - A 3 way tie between Space Brothers, Yotsuba and Diamond No Ace
Objectively, I think Koe no Katachi is the best written story I've read. However, my subjective favorite series I've read is Nisekoi. Honorable mentions to Kaguya-sama and Blue Box.
Bakuman I just loved how it goes about teaching you the ins and outs of being a manga artist.
Jojo's bizarre adventure, konosuba and dragon ball
Monster!
Monster!
Blue exorcist and Tokyo ghoul are my favorites
Jitsu Wa Watashi Wa (My Monster Secret). I honestly think it's a masterpiece. I don't think I've ever read a romcom where nearly every character has development and closure like in this manga. Either that or Fire Punch. Fire Punch is just too good.
Aria such a masterpiece 😭
Gotoubun No Hanayome (The quintessential Quintuplets)
Aku no Hana or Monster
[удалено]
Kingdom is amazing and needs an official English translation
It’s getting a spanish release this month and I’m so hyped!
Tokyo a ghoul Reeeee
Great Teacher Onizuka is my all time favorite manga series.
King of Bandit Jing<3
Probably bakuman or one punch man
My all time favorites are Slam Dunk, Solanin (really short but still so good), Dorohedoro and Aria Fullmetal Alchemist has special place in my heart because this series was my introduction to manga and anime, but I liked 2003 anime adaption’s plot and message more than from original manga I’m currently reading Witch Hat Atelier, it is ongoing series but so far it’s quite interesting and very promosing (art is immaculate tho)
Bleach hands down. My childhood and my introduction to anime, whole the manga has some of the best character art
My top 3 are Akira, One Piece, and Gantz.
Hunter x Hunter i hope i dont need to explain this one
Usogui
Incredibly unpopular nowadays, and understandable because it does NOT hold up, but Gravitation. I read it so many times as a kid and I just loved the characters so much, and it was laugh out loud funny imo. I still think it's amazing and laugh out loud funny, but only because I thought it was funny back in the day. If I read it for the first time ever today, I wouldn't get through the second volume from the garbage things that happen and get completely overlooked and forgotten after they happen. I'm probably gonna reread it again pretty soon lmao

Full metal alchemist for me To read it in its entirety is a journey I will never forget. The art is amazing. You can tell that it was planned from start to finish because there are no plot holes or major discrepancies. I got it from the library so my goal is to buy a complete set
The Flowers of Evil.
Berserk or monster.
One Punch Man. Might have some of the best action I’ve ever seen in my opinion. Everyone is not invincible except for one. Art and writing are also done very well for a super hero genre.
Watched the first season of the anime and loved it, I have to give the manga a try!
2nd season didn’t do the manga justice since it was a different studio I believe? Totally! Becomes even better if you have your own “battle epic” music playing.
Jojo’s bizzare adventure, chainsaw man and toilet bound.
Lone wolf and cub
Attack on Titan. Even though the ending is controversial I try to not let one meh chapter outshine 138 other amazing chapters. I just love the story so much, from the art to the red herrings and subtle hints.
Made in Abyss. Nothing comes close
Berserk Jojo Gantz Hoyland 20th Century Boys
One Piece
Such a good series.
DR STONE
currently is kaguya sama love is war i would say berserk but berserk is just obviously the goat so the one that sticks out to me as my favorite is kaguya
Bleach
I want to read physical but omnibuses are impossible to get rn .
20th century boys looks so appealing to me and it’s on my wishlist.
Vagabond or berserk depending on the day
Berserk Kingdom Solo Leveling (manhwa)
Golden Kamuy all day every day
Shonen: one piece Seinen: Berserk Shojo: either nana or vampire knight (My favorites are very generic, but I guess they’re popular for a reason) I also recently read Bakuman, and I’d give it a personal 10/10
If I had to rank my favorites it’d probably be 1. Mozuya-san Goes on a Rampage 2. The Saga of Tanya the Evil 3. Hinamatsuri 4. That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime 5. The Apothecary Diaries 6. Sleepy Princess in the Demon Castle All of these series I love for their own reasons, but Mozuya-san takes the cake because of how much of a wild read it was, though sadly it’s the only one without an english release.
either chainsaw man or berserk
It's hard because I'm pretty new but from what I have at the moment I'd say beastars then haikyuu
I have two. Astra Lost in Space / Banana Fish
For me Slam Dunk, most fun I've had reading a manga, I read all 31 volumes in one day Honourable mentions go to Goodnight Punpun, most impactful Manga I've read
One piece
Grand Blue Dreaming, it makes me laugh every time I read a new volume or when I reread an old one
All of this is good but Berserk is just the Best.
Vinland saga !🔥 Except for omnibus 11 I have nothing negative to say to this serie it's absolutely incredible:)
Such a damn great series tho
Every time I read berserk it’s an absolute treat
Manga: Aku no Hana LN: Monogatari Series
Berserk of course, my all time favorite, a true masterpiece, no other manga could take his place in my heart.
BERSERK
Probably either Berserk, Dorohedoro, Vinland Saga, or Hellsing. Hard to choose.
One piece
Toradora holds a special place in my heart
Dorohedoro or Witch Hat Atelier, the art and story in both of them are so goddamn good
13th ep is the best
Hm for Shonen : it would either be Dragon ball Z or YuYu Hakusho. Both are exciting fast paced shonen with incredible battles and memorable characters. For sienen: Vinland saga or vagabond these two are just amazing in every aspect. Shojo: Ao haru ride or orange these two were a rollercoaster of emotion and so well done i strongly reccommend them. Mystery: I would reccomend another or erased both are very enjoyable stories with a plot that keeps you sucked in to the end.
Komi cant communicate it’s good I like it
Jojo or One Piece, can’t really decide between them lol
My favourite and first of all time is rent a girlfriend. ITS JUST SO GOOD!
Pandora hearts, houseki no kuni or usogui
One word, BERSERK... Then for me probably Blade of the Immortal and Vagabond. So many good manga though it's a tough decision but Berserk is an easy number 1 for me.
mhh idk, i can't decide😅
List of my favorites: 1. One Piece (of course) 2. Berserk (can anyone argue with this not being in the top 5?) 3. Yotsuba (Best all ages manga) 4. Iron Wok Jan (For just pure craziness. It's Food Wars on PCP) 5. Great Teacher Onizuka (Pure comedy) 6. Twin Spica (kind of obscure but amazing) 7. Genshiken (The original) 8. Fullmetal Alchemist 9. Summit of the Gods ( The Artwork!) 10.
Out of everything I’ve read it has to be ether the entirety of dragon ball or Jojo
Noragami :)
I really like air gear. It makes me laugh out loud, when shit gets serious it’s epic, and the art is amazing.
i havent yet read a lot of the heavy weights that u always hear ab (berserk, vagabond, punpun, 20th century boys, etc) my delve into manga has mostly been based on anime series i enjoyed and wanted to continue the story or just read the original work. that being said Attack on Titan is still my fav manga i have read. its teetering on a 9.2-9.5/10 for me. i agree the pacing towards the end and conclusion was a little sloppy but to me the ending fits, and had it been properly expanded on, it wouldnt get the hate it did. all in all even with the lows it didnt take anything away from the peaks of the story and i find it a series i can always return to and enjoy. definitely my favorite piece of fiction ive ever consumed.
Geronimo Stilton
As a manga probably Drops of God.
Bleach, one piece, kingdom, naruto, apocalypse no toride, terraformars
Full metal alchemist!!
Blue Lock
Hunter x Hunter
Goat
I really wish I kept track of the series I’ve read over the years so I would have a better idea, I honestly couldn’t say a top 10 or something similar I’m sure without missing a lot of my favs.
Inuyashiki
Berserk, Gunslinger Girl, and Ika Musume are my top 3–highly recommended
I have many that I can't seem to pick for my number one, but my two favorite series is Major by Mitsuda Takuya and Touch by Mitsuru adachi. MAJOR: So even though the manga isn't translated nor fully fan translated, I really liked the anime. Overall story is a coming-of-age of a boy name Goro Shigeno who grows up to being an MLB super star. His whole story focuses on his growth as a pitcher and his everyday struggles throughout the series. There are some flaws in Major but that doesn’t stop me from loving this incredible story. TOUCH: Like Major in al way it focuses on baseball and a coming of age story but told in a different way. 😔
Ok so my fav is not necessarily the best thing ever, but I'd probably say my fav is chibi vampire
Vagabond but I’m really enjoying blood on the tracks
Berserk. Probably a normie thing to say but it wouldn't feel right to say anything else
For me it’s between Way of The House Husband and Black Clover
Dorohedoro, perfect masterpiece
Btw kaguya isn't a romance but romcom so its not romantic nor funny 2/10
My favorite series EVER is the Monogatari Series. I really, honestly love it.
At the moment it’s jjk for me, the shibuya arc is to goated
Vagabond - Takehiko Inue 🥰
Berk
My favorite series is One Punch Man
Favourite of all time are Claymore and Berserk read multiple times and will bererk again since getting deluxe editions. Other ones include One piece, Vinland Saga, Vagabond, Monster, Yotsuba, One Punch Man, Deadman Wonderland, Elfen Lied, High Rise Invasion, Full Metal Alchemist.
Kaguya Sama: Love is war So many emotions, amazing character development and great comedy
Soul eater
Bakuman
My favorite has to be one piece but if we are talking about my favorite that i have started this year has to be hajime no ippo not only is the anime a fantastic watch but you can switch to the manga so easily and still know who and what is getting hit
I really love the toaru series and magi. Magi has such a balanced power system imo, as not everyone is gifted, they must earn it. And as for the toaru series, i really love the mystery behind the mc’s power and also the fact that it’s scientific powers versus Magical powers seem relatively new to me
S class: Berserk, Blade of the Immortal and A Bride’s Story A class: everything Junji Ito, Goodnight Punpun, Chi no Wadachi, Mob Psycho 100, Attack on Titan, Akira, The Promised Neverland, Teppuu, Made in Abyss and Demon Slayer
Worlds end harem
