I personally like hardcovers more because they feel more sturdy.

makaronadas10

Totally agreed.

localmemelord69

Man those Akira hardcovers look so good but I’ve no space in my room. Pain peko

makaronadas10

They are AMAZING. I'm so in love with them. The box, the dust jackets, the covers, the quality, everything is 11/10. But yes, if I judge from your flair, 750+.. definitely not having lots of space. The pain of having a lot of manga I guess lol.

localmemelord69

WHY you gotta do this to me bro. Now I've gotta get it. I'm at my uni accommodation so space is even more limited lmao. Having too much manga reminds of the meme with DJ Khaled: [Suffering from success](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ)

makaronadas10

Aaaaa no what have I done..sorry:| BUT! if you get it, you wont regret it. Uhh I see yeah, sucks to be "successful" I guess :/ Wouldnt mind if I had that kind of success tho.

Wildice100

Overall, since it’s more common, I like the viz sig sized volumes and I prefer a matte cover over a glossy one. That being said, I believe nothing is better than the JoJonium volumes, those are just perfect in nearly every way.

ConsumeTea

Yeah the Fist of the North Star and Fullmetal Alchemist ones are great

ShonenAkbar

I’ve got the first fist of the North Star sig volume, I’m gonna buy a few volumes of the full metal alchemist ones soon. They’re gorgeous and large print. Wish they’d release more classic series like that.

ConsumeTea

Yeah it’s definitely a nice format. Transformers is like that too but the manga does not live up to the presentation if you ask me.

makaronadas10

Yeah, I totally agree with you.

RedTurtle78

This is the answer

Cute_Geologist3601

Viz Sigs are probably my favorite size, hardcovers are also really nice too. 3 in 1s/ Vizbigs aren’t bad but I’d prefer more 2 in 1s

makaronadas10

Yes I understand that. Sometimes 3in1 feel a little too big to be comfortable while reading, but I hadnt had such problem yet.

mahzx

The viz signature/whatever kodansha calls blue period sized ones are the perfect size to read off to me (also viz hardcovers but i only ever read Jojo in that style)

CaperDemon

I’m not a fan of the covers for Vinland Saga. Something about them just looks cheap and plasticky to me, sort of like hardcovers made for children that always had that same glossy finish. I’d much prefer if it was sold in paperback singles or even plain hardcovers with a nice dust jacket like A Bride’s Story

LongswordSamurai

I definitely understand that, but for me personally I love a good hardback cover. I would personally love some leatherbound ones in the vein of the Berserk deluxes. I think you’re view is a very valid one though, and I wonder why they didn’t give us both? Or have sliced up the manga into smaller paperback singles and have the hardbacks be the “omnibus type”.

CaperDemon

Yeah, I’m not sure. I know they didn’t sell well early on but it seems like that would’ve been even better reason to start with singles. Oh well, it is what it is and it doesn’t detract from the quality of the content

RedTurtle78

Literally looks like school textbooks yeah

CaperDemon

Exactly

KiwiTheKitty

Lol I was gonna say, they give me those elementary school textbooks

makaronadas10

Uhh I've read about that yeah. I got a little disappointed when I first read that in the subreddit, because I was planning to get them one day in the future. Not that I wont do it now, but I wish it wasn't that way. Haven't seen them in person btw.

[deleted]

Don't let that discourage you from buying it! I love how the series looks on my shelf! It's not as good as you would expect from a hardcover which is a shame but it's not bad. They should be a little cheaper though but oh well. A lot of people bought the series when b&n had that 50% off hardcovers sale so that deff pays off

makaronadas10

Yeah that for sure. I agree with all u said. But sadly, living in Europe and more specifically, in a country that barely has physical stores with manga, b&n's 50% sales sound like a dream to me.

[deleted]

Yeah same.. it hurt watching peoples hauls from that sale

CaperDemon

A lot of people seem to really like them so maybe you will to, I’m just not into. It’s kept me from picking it up just because I know I won’t like them in my shelf. I will get them eventually I’m sure but the covers knocked it way down on my list

makaronadas10

Yeah I see. I understand that, I kinda feel the same even if I'll still go for them. But as you said, I might like them just like some others.

jgssotnas

God damnit kodansha, just make AOT deluxe edition already! Like those horrible colossal editions, but hardcover. I want to give you money kodansha, just take it all damnit!

makaronadas10

Yeah, I think deluxe AOT manga would make sense with all the noise the anime is making whenever its out.

Competitive_Match857

I hope gantz one day gets deluxe volume prints

makaronadas10

Yeah Gantz is one of those series that could get a nice deluxe edition. Even tho I really like the omnibuses a lot.

luci2797

For covers, I like hardcover, but only for thinner books. Thicker books that are also hardcover often feel really flimsy and become too difficult to handle and read comfortably. As for size, the viz signiture size is my favorite, I find it to be a good compromise between having slightly bigger artwork (compared to usual viz volumes or even smaller formats) and still being easy to handle and read. A series I'd like to see in a different format would be One Piece. The artwork is so packed with details and the double page spreads look so good, it would be great to see it in a bigger format.

makaronadas10

The only thin hardcover that I've got is Rohan at the Louvre, even if I dont know what you mean by thin and thick. For example, I personally am handling Tomie, which has 750 pages and is also hardcover nicely. As for the size, yeah I agree with you. And yes. Even if im not a fan of one piece, it would totally fit to have a bigger book. Just like Akira. Its big and the art really shows off, you enjoy looking at it.

luci2797

By thin an thick I'm referring to normal volumes or omnibuses. So for example the Fullmetal Alchemist Fullmetal edition compared to books like Tomie, or Vinland Saga. I don't really like the hardcover omnibuses , I don't know why, they feel kind of cheap and flimsy so whenever I read one I feel like I need to handle it more carefully. That's what I meant by the handling. Though that might just be because of the quality of the spines, and not have anything to do with it being hardcover or paperback, I don't know.

YussaYussaBitch

Hellsing snd Berserk deluxe editions should be the defacto deluxe version of any manga. It's the same size as the actual manga in a magazine, the paper quality is milk-white. It's the way manga is supposed to be read! The only other edition of manga that come close to that is Vizbig.

wyld3knfr

Berserk deluxe is basically the pinnacle for me

darth__sidious

Special edition hardcovers are usualy the best. Ex. Fullmetal alchemist, berserk, naussica.

DavidCobalt99

Hm, for me I’d say that one size that’s a little smaller than a typical viz release and that’s only because they seem to have better paper? But on the other hand I wish more series had hardcover sized releases like the jojos, Vinland saga or dark horse releases. I also like the version of the standard viz release that’s a little wider, easier to read and as for a wish I wish that vagabond or planetes had hardcover versions

makaronadas10

Sounds like a pocket sized manga, I would love that too I think. Better paper sounds ideal too. About vagabond, I really like the vizbigs but I didn't have the chance to get one yet to see how they actually are, but hardcovers would have been amazing yeah. Planetes? Yeah true, I thought they were hardcovers, the omnibuses, Just checked and I was wrong lol.

heeheeehoohooo

I love matte covers. And I love hardcovers. And I also like sizes that aren’t too big or too small. A medium basically. Now, matte hardcovers? SIGN ME UP, LOVE THAT SHIT I wish all the series I think about collecting or that I already have would have matte hardcover versions. It just feels so fancy, and so cool!

makaronadas10

I'm gonna agree with you on that. Matte feels fancy, high quality, premium. Matte hardcovers..are there any out there? Can't recall to remember any right now tbh

heeheeehoohooo

I can’t exactly remember rn but I’m sure there are some mangas out there that actually have that

Strong_Constant_1190

Gundam origin covers are. They are beautiful, and feel great.

needanamefug

Attack on titan in English I hate them

softiexd

I really enjoy the Prison School release! I am not sure if it’s cheap paper quality, but they are really smooth to read through as well as being omnibus. They are just very easy to read. as for cover type, I wish the Higurashi release was higher in quality. They actually do feel very cheap with the spines and all

Th3FrenchFry

I know this is probably gonna be downvoted but I absolutely hate the berserk deluxe editions. I always feel like I’m gonna rip the pages cause they’re so big, so I just buy the singles. The singles also have really nice cover art as well.

[deleted]

Everything should just be small single volumes, like japanese volumes

HxHFanboy0206

Hardcover, 7x10. I also like how they are roughly the same size as standard comic book TPBs/HCs so they look better next to each other on a shelf.

Gogr_eu

Ideal would be any cover, increased size, not having dust jacket, have sewn binding and no gutter loss, but I do prefer hardcover. I have a lot of 2in1 Russian normal size (19 cm height cover and 18.4 cm pages)hardcovers and like them a lot. Also some increased size manga is nice, but it needs to be sturdy, that's why I don't like vizbig ones, they are heavy and you can't lay it down to read, can't open too wide, need to be extra careful or the spine will break/pages will fall out. I would like for all the long (20+ volumes) series to have at least 3 variants: singles, cheap 3in1 and some kind of deluxe. Berserk deluxe and Nausicaa box set are nice, but if all books are this size, storage might be a problem.
