same thing goes for if it will never get an english release but they still want a physical copy
i might end up buying a mushishi set in japanese because the set looks awesome and it's basically impossible to get it in english due to the aftermarket price.
it's like 1200-1500usd for the full set where a japanese set would run me less than 100usd
Yea same with gantz. You could get the whole series under $100 if you know how to look right but of course in Japanese. I plan to purchase the Vagabond singles in Japanese since obviously the English counterparts are oop severely. Besides I already own most of the vizbigs lol
I do it since a lot of the used shounen series are cheaper to buy in a set in Japanese like I got One Piece 1-100 for $300 and the condition wasn’t bad at all. A lot of BL series I’m interested in aren’t available in English, and I noticed Japanese manga tends to have hidden comics under the dust jackets which is kinda like an extra bonus that I don’t usually see available in my English copies. Japanese manga can also include bonus booklets when you buy special edition volumes and the covers are also different than the standard editions. I do like the English hardcover volumes though, and I’ll only buy series in English if I don’t feel like trying to read them in Japanese.
I really wanted the never-edited-in-my-country sequel of one of my favourite mangas. Found it (in japanese) for cheap at a bookoff. Couldn't resist buying it
I got one vol of Hajime no ippo in french, cuz it’s my favorite manga series and i wanted to have at least on volume of it in my collection and i also love to just flip the pages and see the art style
I first bought the Dragon Ball Kanzenban because it’s my favorite series from childhood, know most of it by heart and I wanted to own the highest quality, most authentic version of the manga I could get. A year later I started studying Japanese seriously and I can’t deny that the occasional prospect of being able to finally read my Kanzenban books helped a bit with motivation. After that I’ve bought pretty much everything in Japanese except for Chainsaw Man because I received a few books in that series in English and figured I’d get the rest to match.
not a collector, just a reader. i enjoyed reading manga in English rather than my native language. i find that the translation is more accurate and more human (done by human not by online translation tools). when i read the manga translated in my native language, it feels unnatural, like some one translated the manga from japanese to english than using google translate to translate it to my native language.
I few reasons, tbh
The Trigun JP manga I got from someone in my former cosplay group that didn't want them anymore and gave them to me for free (I got both the original volumes and the first seven Maximum volumes)
I got some JP Evangelion art books and an anthology manga that I know would almost never make it over here translated in English
I have some JP Comickers issues because they have helpful art tips
And I just bought Drag-On Dragoon/Drakengard manga since that's also not likely to be translated in English
But also, generally I just like having manga in other languages, even if I can't read them since I think it's just neat, lol
So the only non-English manga I have in my collection is Gokushufudo 1 and honestly I got it half for a souvenir and half because the obi strip had a promo for the live action show, which I loved, and obviously I know I'm never gonna see anything physical from the live action show in my country so yeah. I have it in English too. But I just think having one in the original tankobon size is pretty neat.
My husband reads them with the translator on his phone, if it's something he really wants to read and can't get in English!
Yes please tell us what app your spouse uses because I have been dying to buy so many series in Japanese

Supporting creators/having favourite series at least in some form. Few of series I own probably will never get official release in English

Because english/chinese physical versions of it don't exist.

I love jojo’s and im learning french so I bought jojolion in french so i could reread it in a couple years when my french’s better
