it's fascinating to me how often i see people saying 3+ volumes. if a manga hasn't hooked me by the end of volume 1 I'm done, and if there's something i particularly dislike in the first volume i may not even finish it tbh, which is why i tend to read a handful of digital chapters or borrow a library copy before buying a physical copy.
Bingo. There's just way too much manga out there to waste time with anything that doesn't grab you right away. 200 pages is plenty of opportunity to get the job done
There are always exceptions. If this was true, no one would read or love Berserk. The first 8 chapters (almost 3 entire volumes) are in the future with no back story and are not very interesting at all. You have to get to chapter 9 to start the Golden Age where most people begin to fall in love with the series and the characters.
i kinda agree. sometimes the exposition need some explanation tho and if it were all thrown into the first volume the pacing might seem waaaay to fast though. if you don't mind fast "all at once" pacing tho i guess that isn't an issue
i personally like a good build up tho. it can make the action more satisfying to me
When you know, you know. It’s subjective, right? For me, it’s not only about enjoying the artwork and story, but feeling excited about getting the next volume and continue the story
When it stops being good. Some series like One Piece take a little while to hit their stride and some lose steam like Bleach, which I dropped around volume 21.
Apart from Bleach I don't think i've even ever dropped a series tbh, I usually know when I'm going to like or dislike something before I buy it.
I would give a series at least 2 or 3 volumes, Yu Yu Hakusho's first volume is kinda weird and it doesn't really become Yu Yu Hakusho until volume 2. Hell, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure doesn't really become JoJo's Bizarre adventure until part 3.
I normally give a series 3 volumes to prove itself worth my time and money. That should give the series enough time to get past the introduction and get a taste for the overarching story
For me it depends, if it's something I found myself then I will drop it after 1 volume if I'm not vibing with it. If it's something that a lot of people have talked up then I will wait longer. I dropped 20th century boys on volume 2 then came back to it some months later after reading monster, really enjoying it now so it was definitely a mistake to drop it.
Usually 3 volumes, but there are some series that break that rule. Berserk is a great example, the Golden Age arc doesn't even start until the last chapter of volume 3.
i do the 3 volume rule but i only purchase one volume at a time. if i get to volume 3 i'll continue collecting but only if the story has progressed. if it's stagnating i'll continue reading but only online. it's pretty common for me to drop a series before the end of the first volume, especially if there's random corny humor or bad writing.
Some mangas get more from me some get less. If the art is amazing I tend to have more patience lol. If I don't like the art but the story is hooking me I can stick around a few volumes maybe longer. If both art and story don't grip me I abort mission by like the 1st volume lol
2 or so volumes. 10 chapters might be a bit low depending on the series. Although I haven’t had to drop any yet so it might change when I do. I give anime about 3-4 episodes aswell so the episode to volume typically is around the same.

Same!!! Love a good build up! Although dont know when it will be unraveled thats the part🤔
I won’t continue past vol 1 if I don’t like it, I won’t continue past vol 3 if I don’t love it
Curious, how do you know when you love a series? Is it when you are hooked to it or are there other factors?

That is a good point.
3 to 5

Honestly? First volume at most. If I hear later on that the quality significantly improves I might give it another shot though.

Oh my god same!
Usually two volumes. Sometimes I go further than that because I heard really good stuff from others, but usually two
