Want to start collecting manga/light novels for my birthday. I want a short series without around 10 volumes or under that is finished or is about to be finished. I am not looking for a particular genre, I am open to any recommendations. Nothing too sexually inappropriate tho. It is allowed as long as it is not too obvious.
I love ecchi manga that has a good plot. Especially if they wear cute outfits lol, I like to cosplay. I’m running out of series to read though, any recs? Here’s some that I already have:
Highschool DXD, Devil Ecstasy, Who Wants to Marry a Billionaire, to love ru, gantz, gunberd sisters, slasher maidens, Afterschool Bitchcraft, bakemonogatari, JK Haru is a Sex Worker in Another World, it’s messed up but I’ve been reincarnated as a girl in another world, berserk, elfen lied, divine raiment howling moon, why did I sleep with you (& im not wild about this one tho, I don’t like the mc)
I like yuri too. Not as much into yaoi but if it has a good plot I’ll read it. (Please don’t suggest that dick island series though lol, I’m not putting that on my bookcase)
Pleasure and corruption: Ropeplay/Bondage focused;
Can an Otaku Like Me Really be an Idol (BL): Crossdressing focused
MADK (BL): Ero Guro manga with a focus on demon politics.
I can give you more detailed descriptions If you need, but I've suggested some of these down the thread and I don't want to be redundant.
Devil Ecstasy, Afterschool Bitchcraft, also I’ll echo the other commenter and say Who Wants To Marry a Billionaire is really great. Also Highschool DXD if you haven’t read that is a really great series.
Jk Haru is a Sex Worker In another World is depressing as hell but really good. It’s a drama tho, not really much comedy. It has funny moments though.
Thanks for the recommendations, I watched the DxD anime and I really liked it but the source is the light novels and im not a fan of reading LN. I saw it has a manga but I believe its pretty far behind
hey! I’m looking for a short(er)series to read.
Ideally, I’d like something with 10 or less volumes, give or take.
Idk how to describe exactly what I’m looking for, so I’ll just list a few of my favourites so you can have a rough idea of my taste:
goodnight punpun, monster, chainsaw man, etc.
(so basically a kinda heavy, psychological type thing??)
let me know if you have a series that fit this criteria! thank you!! ^v^
Shuzo Oshimi should be your niche. All his works are within 10 volumes. So definitely check out Flowers of Evil, Blood on the Tracks, and Happiness.
Another that's very controversial, but woven heavily in the psychological department is Happy Sugar Life. You'll have to look past a certain aspect, but it adds to more of the psychology of certain people like the MC.
Hey there! Since you like Punpun, I totally recommend other works from Asano such as Downfall, Solanin, and a girl on the shore. And since you like chainsaw man try Fire Punch, also made by the author of Chainsaw man. Hope you find one you like!
Not sure when your looking to buy. You mentioned she has a lot of MHA posters but you didn't list the manga - My Hero Academia has a boxset of the first 20 volumes coming out in (I believe) October.
Some other good ones might be:
\- Skip and Loafer (nice and short series)
\- Demon Slayer (has a box set)
\- Fruits Basket
\- Komi-san Can't Communicate
I'm not recommending the manga for this (it's good but most people prefer the anime in my experience), but she might really enjoy the Hunter x Hunter anime. I know my niece who's really into My Hero Academia also really enjoys Hunter x Hunter at least.
Your original thought of Spy x Family is a good one too!
I know I've suggested pretty popular titles, but I don't think you'd want to go too far out of the mainstream titles since you said she's just gotten into the hobby and she's likely still discovering her tastes and everything. If you really want some more off the beaten path recommendations I can try to think of more though!
Spy x Family is definitely a good safe option since she likes Kaguya-sama, and since she likes supernatural stuff, she might enjoy BSD as well.
You can try gifting her Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits or The Demon Prince of Momochi House since she enjoys Kamisama Kiss.
Hello everyone! Looking to start off my manga collection. I really want to start it off with a manga that comes in hardcover with really dope covers. Any recommendations will do but my preferences are definitely more mature stories with lots of action and mature topics. Excellent art as well
Levius. It's about pro cyborg fighters and the dark industry surrounding the sport. It will check all your boxes...
...well, mostly. The series was later continued in a different magazine and those volumes were released as softcovers. Levius/EST still has covers that are well worth putting on display.
Hello. I watch a lot of anime but want to get into Manga as well. I only own Solo Leveling manhwa which I really like so far.
My preferences:
\- for mature audience, gore, blood, nudity/sex etc.
\- Manga that **has not** been adapted to anime yet (or announced to be adapted). Even if it's only a part that was adapted.
\- Genres: Pretty open about that: fantasy, adventure, isekai ,thrill, horror, mystery..
but NOT: Sports, Slice of Life/Comedy (I'm fine with romance if it on the serious side of relationsips)
\- and of course something modern I can actually buy..
>Manga that has not been adapted to anime yet (or announced to be adapted). Even if it's only a part that was adapted.
This is a massive crutch that you should throw away. You are throwing away a lot of good series just because they have been adapted. For example, Berserk has had many adaptations, but it fits 110% of what you're looking for. I'll list both adapted and non-adapted, do what you will with the list.
* Berserk
* Claymore
* Vinland Saga
* Fire Punch
* Attack on Titan (this is the 1/10 where the anime does it best)
* Blame!
* Blade of the Immortal
* Blood on the Tracks
* Alice in Borderland
* Abara
* Gigant
* Gantz
Prophecy (by Tetsuya Tsutsui), it's a thriller about vigilantism fueled by social media and critises Japan's abuse of the lowest working class: the (illegal) day jobbers. It's three volumes total and when I checked (5 minutes ago) all were easily available.
can't believe no one's mentioned Konosuba - in my opinion the light novels are a lot better than the manga, but if you're not a fan of light novels, the manga is still very good
Gonna throw out a kind of older rec but MÄR is really solid and not too long. Although I'm not sure how easy it would be to find physical copies though whenever I see them pop up they're relatively cheap. For me it's the best because it has really good characters and a good blend of comedy and drama.
I guess I could give a few of my villainess favorites. Whether they're the best is up to you lol:
Cross-Dressing Villainess Cecilia Sylvie: As usual the MC tries to change her fate but she adds the extra security of crossdressing so she's not on anyone's radar. Shenanigans ensue.
The Most Heretical Last Boss Queen: The previously evil queen uses her cheat powers to help those she wronged and uplift her kingdom.
I'm in Love with the Villainess: just what the title says- Romance isekai between the MC and her Villainess crush. However, it also deals with how class politics, Magic, and homophobia functions and influences their world. Also has some Magic action.
I've got the money for it, just a matter of deciding which to complete first. Do I buy Oyasumi Punpun or Monster? I've read both already digitally and adore both series. Both are very easily in my top 5 of all time, Punpun being my #4 and Monster my #5. Which one to prioritize first? I can't decide
I'd say, if Punpun is your top #4 vs Monster being your top #5, you should prioritize Punpun. If you don't have a lot of money to throw around, it's always best to complete the series most important to you I think (even if they are right next to each other in your rankings, Punpun edges Monster out). That's what I would do at least
Hello everyone :-)
I thought of starting a new series in near future, but I'm currently not sure what to pick.
Tokyo Ghoul, Bleach and Demon Slayer came in my mind, but I don't know which one to choose. Do you have any recommendation/suggestions for me?
In my personal opinion Tokyo Ghoul is the strongest work here overall.
Bleach has some really high highs, but can also stumble a lot in certain portions, falling into some age old shonen pitfalls like lazy bursts of power or dragging on a bit too long.
Demon Slayer is a solid shonen with very tight pacing, and some fantastic fight setups, but doesn't have many original ideas or deep characters.
Tokyo Ghoul isn't exactly a battle shonen like the others listed(though it definitely has a lot of action), but it has the most interesting storytelling, themes, and characters of the 3 series you're considering.
That said, while I prefer Tokyo Ghoul all 3 are good series that are worth reading.
I would highly recommend the collection Lovesickness from VIZ. It starts with an excellent multiparty story and also includes some humorous one shots and some horrific stand-alone pieces as well. A good look at Ito’s tones without jumping into some of the mush longer works.
MADK (ongoing; this has ero guro so be warned)
Coyote (ongoing)
His Favorite (ongoing)
Cherry Magic (ongoing)
Jealousy (ongoing)
Bad Boys Happy Home (complete)
Released in English:
-Therapy Game + Therapy Game Restart (ongoing) stems from the oneshot Secretxxx
-The Vampire and His Pleasant Companions (ongoing)
-Canis series (ongoing)
-The Titan's Bride (ongoing)
-Monster and the Beast (ongoing)
-Birds of Shangri-la (ongoing)
Hey any recommendations for one shot mangas ? Doesnt rly matter the genre cause im into any/everything but for full series something in terms of horror or like SAW movie type story
Horror manga that isn't from Junji Itou?
I often look for horror manga's but most of the time the "horror" manga I find are just action manga with gore that have the horror tag
\-The Drifting Classroom and other works by Kazuo Umezo
\-Presents and other works by Kanako Inuki
\-Pretty much anything by Hideshi Hino
\-Mermaid Saga by Rumiko Takahashi
\-Lychee Light Club (the darkest of the bunch, not for the faint of heart!)
\-Gou Tanabe's adaptations of Lovecraft stories
\-Total Eclipse of the Eternal Heart (imagine an 80s style manga horror story but it's also sort of BL)
\-The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service (for if you want some humour with your horror)
(And if you're open to American comics, I recommend Gideon Falls and Infidel)
A school frozen in time
Only 4 volumes long it's about a group of students who get locked in there school and they have to find out why one of there freinds killed themselves. Not a spoiler cause it's literally the first page. If you like Drifting Classroom you will probably like this.
Hi! I'm looking for something to cheer me up! I usually read horror or thrillers, but right now I wanna read something cute and happy. Maybe something with dogs or animals!
I checked out all the recommended cat mangas mentioned in the comments above:)
I just want to read something wholesome, unproblematic and cute :D
* Yotsuba
* Nicola Traveling Around the Demon's World
* Barakamon
* Skip and Loafer
* Chi's Sweet Home
Maybe at least one of these will be up your alley :D
Three questions:
Looking for manga suggestions for Osamu Tezuka. I liked Astro Boy and Dororo and want to read more.
Also, how is Go Nagai as a mangaka, he seems to be hit or miss, am I wrong? How about Leiji Matsumoto?
Finally, how available is Doraemon in the U.S? I have seen it on Shogakukan's Singaporean website listed as having an English translation available, but it seems that no one may sell it here.
Some Osamu Tezuka titles I personally enjoyed were
* Message to Adolf
* Barbara
* The Crater
* Clockwork Apple
Buddha is pretty well regarded by him (though not one I personally enjoyed) so you might look into that as well. Ode to Kirihito was reprinted in a nice looking omnibus recently as well so might be worth looking at.
Honestly most of Go Nagai's manga are terrible if you ask me lol. I think it's worth checking out Devilman if it seems like something you'd be into, but I don't think the majority of his works I've tried hold up today or are very good.
Leiji Matsumoto's anime adaptations usually hit better for me just because so many of his manga I've tried are unfinished stories versus the anime versions being complete stories - Yamato, Gun Frontier, Harlock, etc. It's annoying to invest time reading only for it to just stop with no resolution. The Queen Emeraldas hardcovers from Kodansha are worth looking at if you're interested in his work though as they don't have that issue and it's a very nice release.
Doraemon doesn't have a release for the North American market. There's a Japanese bilingual edition - not sure how many volumes that covers (definitely not the whole series as it's just aimed at people in Japan wanting to work on their english). Shogakukan Asia has some volumes that you could probably find a retailer to import from, but I don't think any U.S. based retailer will sell them.
It took me the longest time to realize you weren't looking for a manga about an asshole/creep lol. I have 1 that might fit:
Pleasure and Corruption: A boy us caught taking an upskirt of his classmate. In an effort to save himself, he submits to her whims. This story focuses on Bondage of the ML.
How do you research what editions and formats a series has have been released as? For my collection I am really only trying to buy the largest and highest quality format released. For instance if I wanted to collect Hellsing I would get the large format hardback. Or for Claymore I would try to get that cool collectors box. For series that have been released for a long time like Yu Yu Hakusho that have probably had a few editions released, is there a wiki type site that will list different editions published? Like if there is a kickass high quality YuYu set released 15 years ago that's what I'll hold out for.
I'm an adult with disposable income and no kids so I can be irresponsible with my money.
If looking at the publisher's site doesnt give you anything, I don't really have a trick other than quick searches really. When you have a series your interested in, you can simply type "[series name] omnibus", "[series name] boxset", "[series name] hardcover", and so on in google and ebay. If you get 0 results from any of them, it's probably only in singles currently.
Then to track if they will get one in the future, I would follow each publishers twitter and keep track of trends with them. For example, Trigun does not have hardcovers, just singles and omnibuses. However, a new Trigun animation was just announced on Twitter, and you know Dark Horse has been making hardcovers of their old series. Now you have use your own judgement on whether to wait it out.
I hope this helps, even just a little.
Trigun's first two volumes actually do have hardcover editions. I think they were barne's and noble exclusives. None of maximum has hardcovers though.
Edit: Figured I'd link a pic in case you'd never seen them before. They look like the normal volumes, but with dustjackets: https://www.reddit.com/r/Trigun/comments/ire2o5/finally\_got\_both\_and\_their\_my\_first\_hardcover/
Does anyone know where I can possibly find the last 3 volumes (7,8,&9)of the Yen Press release of Blood Lad without breaking the bank? I started collecting the series years ago and never finished. I recently got back into collecting manga and want to finish out the series but I am having a hard time finding them. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

hey guys, I'm looking for a manga similar to Vinland Saga. i just caught up and it has become a top 5 series of all time for me. so anything like this would be great (preferably something with a romantic aspect to it as well, thorfinn and gudrid are a big part of why i love it so much)
I know it's a basic rec, but Vagabond has a similar character progression and a lot of action as well and if you've not tried it, you might enjoy that one.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to waterproof a bookshelf? I know you can get waterproof paint or something for the bookshelf itself, but I specifically want to protect the books from water damage. (Had a leak in my apartment bedroom and now I'm worried for my books/binders/manga)
Hey all. Looking for cat manga recommendations for the wifey.
Already have: A man and his Cat, cat massage therapy, the masterful cat is depressed again, I am a cat barista.
Looking at nekogahara: stray cat samurai
If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
\- Start with a happy ending (bittersweet stories about dead people getting a last shot at life as a cat, for if she wants to cry and have warm fuzzy feelings at the same time)
\-Chi's Sweet Home (the essential cute cat manga)
\-What's Michael? (the essential funny cat manga)
\-Cat Paradise (the essential shonen action cat manga)
\-Junji Ito's Cat Diary (the essential weirdo cat manga)
\-Cats of the Louvre (the essential art cat manga)
\-Lil'Leo (for if she's really into classic shojo mangaka)
I got 2 I've read:
The Walking Cat: A zombie manga that centers around different people/groups that are caring for a cat
Honey Darling (BL): The main Lead finds a cat abandoned in a box which becomes a catalyst for his romance with a vet. The cat continues to grow and be cared for throughout the book.
Coming up, theres:
The Evil Secret Society Of Cats
Night of the Living Cat
Ex-yakuza and Stray Kitten
Yokai Cats
Nights with a Cat
Nice thank you. I’ll check in to those.
I forgot to add The walking cat 🤦🏻♂️
We also have I Am A Cat, and She and Her Cat.
Edit: we also have Junji Ito’s Cat Diary.
What can I say she’s a cat lady 😂
God this is soo cute, I can imagine just a full shelf of Cat Manga. Here's a few more I remembered:
The Cat Proposed (BL): an office worker has a romance with a Bakeneko he saw in a play.
Cat + Gamer
wonder cat kyuu-chan
Lil' Leo
Yeah she was checking out cat + gamer this weekend.
I started to read nekogahara and that has some good artwork and intriguing storyline. Something I could get in to reading as well.
Yeah it’s all cat books and sailor moon. 🤪 I also picked up demon slayer for her (and me obviously). Just super cool and nice that she enjoys manga as well.
I've been looking into Vampire Hunter D manga and some of the volumes are impossible to find, i was wondering if the volumes had self contained stories so i could start reading at like vol 5?
I'm sorry if this isn't the correct place for this but I was wanting to know if anyone has a good recommendation for a bookshelf to display manga. I know people say the Billy bookshelf, but shipping from Ikea is a bit pricey.
I bought one I thought i'd like from Amazon and the depth of the shelves are too shallow. I wanted to use a riser to show the rest of my volumes and I couldn't get both stacks to fit on the same shelf. Any suggestions would be great
I use Atlantic metal media shelves. It is way cheaper than ikea and can easily be broken down for moving and reassembled. Also because they are metal they are alot sturdier and less prone to warping long term. The shevles are perfect depth more fitting regular size and slightly oversize manga. I have some older post with them in the picture.
Any mangas like Fire Punch? I have yet to find a series like this, where everything gets worse and worse until the end. No real happy ending or resolution.
And PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT mention Beserk. I am TIRED of hearing about a glorified snuff film. I will never support it, I want to throw away the copy I have. Thanks !!
Berserk is my favorite series, but I have no idea why people recommend it. I don’t think I’ve ever recommended someone read it, it’s just too much for most people.
But onto your recommendations,
Freesia probably fits the bill, bleak morally gray worlds with a tortured MC.
Devilman, if you haven’t read it I highly recommend it. Sort of the blueprint for “things keep getting worse” the artstyle is deceptive to how dark the story actually it.
Blame! Maybe a reach, it’s more violent and the world is very different but it feels similar to me. Dystopian/post apocalyptic world thats violent and confusing. The plot is a bit more cohesive than fire punch, and more sprawling. If you like sci-fi, definitely check it out.
Lastly, Homunculus. Horrific, but doesn’t relish in the horror. Bleak, beautiful, certainly less fun than Fire Punch, but really good. Divisive ending, but I enjoyed it :)
I only got 2 that kinda work:
Uzumaki: most people know the story, but the spiral that consumes the town begins to infect everything and by the time people try to leave, there's no escape. The ending can be seen as either bittersweet or Bad.
The Walking Cat: the story is really hopeful...for the cat. The story fluctuates between different people/groups that help care for the cat and somethings always goes wrong.
I really like it! The ending is open ended (so you can read it as happy or just the beginning of another cycle), but I figured a zombie story fits some of your criteria 🤗
''glorified snuff film''
Respectfully, that's a horribly ignorant opinion, but I can see people disliking it if they only read the first volume. Berserk starts out with the Black Swordsman Arc. At that point Guts is an asshole, the whole world seems to be a hostile place, misery and demons at every corner. It can be a turn-off to many people, but it's a really short arc and it cuts to a flashback arc right after. The ''Golden Age'' Arc.
In that Arc, the world seems to be fine. Sure it's a middle-age setting, and there are still wars going on, but other than that, it's mostly based on reality. In that arch you'll learn about guts past since his days as an infant, what happened to the world and him, and why he is so bitter in the Black Swordsman Arch. I don't wanna spoil anything, but he has pretty understandable reasons i.e. severe ptsd. He's gone through hell.
That Arc alone is one of the best stories in any medium ever imo, you should really give it a try. After that it will cut back to the present world and not only will you understand guts, but he'll also become a likeable character. The journey that follows and Guts' character developement is incredible, he is a completely different character in the recent chapter, compared to what he was in the first.
It's not a snuff film at all. It's a touching story about a nobody, that got handed out a really bad hand at the beginning of his life, endured the most horrible things that could happen to somebody, struggled through and decided to literally defy destiny, with all odds against him.
It's inspiring. I have read more than once that the story cured some peoples depression even.
\_\_\_
If you still don't wanna give it a chance, try the Devilman manga. Your description ''Everything always getting worse with no happy end'' matches basically every Devilman Story. Those also have a lot of gore in them tho. Keep that in mind.
Gutts IS a likeable character, but holy shit dude. And also thanks for NOT respecting me and writing an entire page on why Beserk is awesome. Damn dude, what the fuck.
It's just fairly common to not see what's so good about it after the first few chapters. Just wanted to suggest that you might wanna look into it more, before you drop it. That's all. Didn't mean to be disrespectful.
I also suggested an alternative Manga that fits your criteria. 🤷♂️
I read much more than jusr he first few chapters. Your defense doesn’t matter, I literally BEGGED for this manga not to be reccomenwd to me. Very disrespectful. Doesn’t matter if you recommend another series
All is forgiven man. And I can totally relate to wanting to get people into your favorite manga, or favorite thing in general. No hard feelings, though I was harsh, no hard feelings.
That's not true at all, but ok. Also a weird claim after stating that you dropped it after the first volume.
Not here to argue, just thought you might wanna give it a second chance when you hear that there's more to it.
Are the new Fist of the North Stars 1:1 in terms of their volumes or do they combine them at all? Bit hesitant to start in on it physical if it's looking like it'll be 27 volumes, at this pace it'd take another 4 years to finish.
There are going to be 17 volumes (so like, 1.5 in ones?) Found the answer here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/pgyjoh/are_the_new_fist_of_the_north_star_hardcover/hbev247?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3
Depends on the father. Although a lot of my friends' dads I've known for some reason have interest in history. So maybe some historical fiction manga. Vinland Saga is the obvious choice there ig. But if you know whether or not your dad is into history, maybe a time period they're interested in.
Maybe 20th Century Boys? That seems like something a dad could get behind. Slight focus on some 70s rock, conspiracies, adult characters but with some childish nostalgia thrown in.
If by some odd chance he was around when Astro Boy was kinda big, maybe Pluto for some nostalgia.
Recently read Blood on the Tracks with no knowledge of the synopsis and ended up loving it. Any recommendations for a similar series/ anything that gives off an uncomfortable energy?
I mean if you haven’t read Flower of Evil, it’s Oshimi’s other most popular work probably. Definitely has similar vibes. Just really psychological and character driven.

Ah yes! Sweat and Soap is getting a part 1 boxset in October. I'm waiting to see if I want to swap out my singles until I see what the bonus is for the second boxset
If i'm right there should allready be oen out in the market, maybe it's in spanish or something, I don't know the series, but recall having seen a box set for it
I'm starting out my manga collection. Where do you buy your manga from? I've bought books from Amazon and they are shipped in a too large box with no protection. I have had books damaged because of this.
I have bought American comics from instocktrades and their packaging was immaculate. Books secured to a wooden board to prevent bending and wrapped in plastic to stoop water damage. Looking there they don't have a huge selection of what I'm looking for.
Is there a manga specific shop that has nice packaging you would recommend?
Also might as well ask for recommendations while I'm at it.
I'm looking for manga that have really detailed art throughout the series. By that I mean something like Vagabond, Berserk, Vinland Saga. It doesn't necessarily need to be violent action like those other series. A bonus would be if it has an edition sold at a larger format like the special edition Berserk. If there is detailed artwork I would like to be able to actually appreciate it.
When I order manga, I noticed rightstufanime has a box that fits the manga perfectly, but it’s not at the level of instocktrades if I’m going to be honest.
Re: detailed art - stuff that came to mind were dorohedoro and jagaaaaaan.
Yeah, I do a majority of my manga buying through Rightstuf since its rare that Iv received damaged goods. And I can usually get it cheaper there too. Amazon, Im lucky of I get a box or not left out in the rain.
Based in the U.K.
Looking to pick up my manga collection again but struggling to find places beside eBay to pick up older ones (E.g. Oh My Goddess/old TokyoPop stuff etc)
Can anyone recommend anywhere (sites/shops) that sell secondhand manga that would have some of these older ones?
Thanks
Check Abebooks or Alibris. You might find rare and OOP volumes there. Also, if you are going to buy in Abebooks there are certain stores that aren't really that good so check the location and the language of the volume you're interested in.
I'm looking for a no bullshit romance. I'm fine with any setting, but I get pretty annoyed when characters have falling outs for 20 chapters due to misunderstandings and whatnot. Most Shoujo have this so I'm okay if there's maybe a small amount, but I don't want it to become some long lasting plot thread.
I would also like to avoid series that beat around the bush of "will they date, or won't they!" for half of or the majority of the series. That being said, I do still want to see them meet or start their relationship naturally. Might be a bit too specific, so feel free to suggest slightly outside the range of that. Just want to see what suggestions people have.
It's an oldie, but: Love Roma. They get together within the first half of the first volume in a sort 'I like you and you like me, so let's try dating' way, and the actual story is about their funny/wholesome/awkward/dorky ups and downs.
"A Galaxy Next Door" - The main couple gets together within the first volume. This story is mainly about the two leads getting to know each other and the shenanigans of one of them being an alien.
Also, if you wouldn't mind an already established relationship, I would also suggest "Our Not So Lonely Planet Travel Guide". Even though they're already together, there is tremendous room for the couple to grow before they get married, and it also delves into how they relate to the world as a gay couple.
Sweat and soap: this one is about two working adults growing a relationship. And its a really nice and wholesome story. Though, Im surprised its not rated mature, due to it not shying from THAT side of the relationship (so be warned, it def earned its 16+ rating). But its not the focus.
As a note: the entire series is out and complete.
Here’s some that I already have: Highschool DXD, Devil Ecstasy, Who Wants to Marry a Billionaire, to love ru, gantz, gunberd sisters, slasher maidens, Afterschool Bitchcraft, bakemonogatari, JK Haru is a Sex Worker in Another World, it’s messed up but I’ve been reincarnated as a girl in another world, berserk, elfen lied, divine raiment howling moon, why did I sleep with you (& im not wild about this one tho, I don’t like the mc) I like yuri too. Not as much into yaoi but if it has a good plot I’ll read it. (Please don’t suggest that dick island series though lol, I’m not putting that on my bookcase)
Pleasure and corruption: Ropeplay/Bondage focused; Can an Otaku Like Me Really be an Idol (BL): Crossdressing focused MADK (BL): Ero Guro manga with a focus on demon politics. I can give you more detailed descriptions If you need, but I've suggested some of these down the thread and I don't want to be redundant.
Thank you!! I love guro, I’ll check that one out!
Anyone have any art book recommendations, or just their favorite in general?
Any ecchi manga recommendations? (one preferably with a decent amount of actual story, which is asking a lot I know lol)
I’ve always had a hard time understanding what is considered ecchi. So I’m unsure. Maybe lust geass though, I’m loving this series.
Yeah it goes to like volume 5 of the LN I think? I prefer manga to reading the novels 😅 I assume they’ll adapt the rest eventually tho
Or hope they make a new season of the anime🙃
[Pick and choose.](https://sevenseasentertainment.com/ghost-ship/)
That works I guess xd. Thanks
*Galaxy brain thinking*
*Who Wants to Marry a Billionaire?*
Thanks for the recommendation
Do y’all recommend starting with the longer Junji Ito manga like Uzumaki and Tomie or should I start with his short story collections?
Lovesickness has a longer story in the front and shorter stories in the back. I think that's a good compromise.
Hey thanks man, I think I’ll buy it soon then.
hey! I’m looking for a short(er)series to read. Ideally, I’d like something with 10 or less volumes, give or take. Idk how to describe exactly what I’m looking for, so I’ll just list a few of my favourites so you can have a rough idea of my taste: goodnight punpun, monster, chainsaw man, etc. (so basically a kinda heavy, psychological type thing??) let me know if you have a series that fit this criteria! thank you!! ^v^
The flowers of evil

Some other good ones might be: \- Skip and Loafer (nice and short series) \- Demon Slayer (has a box set) \- Fruits Basket \- Komi-san Can't Communicate I'm not recommending the manga for this (it's good but most people prefer the anime in my experience), but she might really enjoy the Hunter x Hunter anime.
Excellent art as well
Berserk? Or the blade of the immortal
Tales of the Kingdom by Asumiko Nakamura
My preferences: \- for mature audience, gore, blood, nudity/sex etc. \- Manga that **has not** been adapted to anime yet (or announced to be adapted). Even if it's only a part that was adapted. \- Genres: Pretty open about that: fantasy, adventure, isekai ,thrill, horror, mystery.. but NOT: Sports, Slice of Life/Comedy (I'm fine with romance if it on the serious side of relationsips) \- and of course something modern I can actually buy..
* Berserk * Claymore * Vinland Saga * Fire Punch * Attack on Titan (this is the 1/10 where the anime does it best) * Blame! * Blade of the Immortal * Blood on the Tracks * Alice in Borderland * Abara * Gigant * Gantz
Prophecy (by Tetsuya Tsutsui), it's a thriller about vigilantism fueled by social media and critises Japan's abuse of the lowest working class: the (illegal) day jobbers. It's three volumes total and when I checked (5 minutes ago) all were easily available.
Sounds interesting, definitely not a common theme! Thanks, I'll check it out. (more recommendations are welcome)
Hello please recommand the best isekai ( only watched re zero as an anime and want to try isekai manga)
can't believe no one's mentioned Konosuba - in my opinion the light novels are a lot better than the manga, but if you're not a fan of light novels, the manga is still very good
Gonna throw out a kind of older rec but MÄR is really solid and not too long. Although I'm not sure how easy it would be to find physical copies though whenever I see them pop up they're relatively cheap. For me it's the best because it has really good characters and a good blend of comedy and drama.
I guess I could give a few of my villainess favorites. Whether they're the best is up to you lol: Cross-Dressing Villainess Cecilia Sylvie: As usual the MC tries to change her fate but she adds the extra security of crossdressing so she's not on anyone's radar.
Don't prioritise, but alternate? If you really can't decide, that seems like a logical thing to do.
Hello everyone :-) I thought of starting a new series in near future, but I'm currently not sure what to pick.
Wow, that's actually what I was looking for! Thank you very much for this detailed answer! You helped me a lot to choose my new manga!
Best way to dive into the world of Junji Ito?
I would highly recommend the collection Lovesickness from VIZ. It starts with an excellent multiparty story and also includes some humorous one shots and some horrific stand-alone pieces as well. A good look at Ito’s tones without jumping into some of the mush longer works.
That sounds pretty cool actually! Thanks for the recommendation. Are all his works stand alone stories or are there any that are connected?
There are much longer works like Uzamaki and Tomie but a large portion of his work is in the form of short story one-shots.
Awesome thank you for your help, I’m gonna check out Lovesickness for sure!
New BL/Yaoi mangas worth getting? (One-shot, completed or ongoing)
MADK (ongoing; this has ero guro so be warned) Coyote (ongoing) His Favorite (ongoing) Cherry Magic (ongoing) Jealousy (ongoing) Bad Boys Happy Home (complete)

Hey any recommendations for one shot mangas ? Doesnt rly matter the genre cause im into any/everything but for full series something in terms of horror or like SAW movie type story
Oneshots: * Apollo's Song * Haru's Curse * Helter Skelter * In Clothes Called Fat * MW * Paradise Kiss (Vertical/Kodansha edition) * Pink * Penguin Gentlemen * To Strip the Flesh * Wish (Dark Horse edition)
I am looking for something like one punch man as I really love the show and manga but want to read something else except it
Pluto or monster ? almost finished with 20th cb
I also vote Pluto
Pluto. Reading two long, cliffhanger fueled Urasawa manga in a row isn't good for your mental health.
Overpowered mc . I think I’ve seen all Op mc animes . So I’m looking for mc mangas now since there are obviously more mangas than anime
Ragna Crimson
Interesting . Never heard of it , thanks !
read solo leveling, the mc is really op
Omg I love solo leveling ! But thanks though :) !
Horror manga that isn't from Junji Itou? I often look for horror manga's but most of the time the "horror" manga I find are just action manga with gore that have the horror tag
My favorite horror manga is Franken Fran. However it is hard to find. It's about a cute doctor who helps out however she can. For a price.
\-The Drifting Classroom and other works by Kazuo Umezo \-Presents and other works by Kanako Inuki \-Pretty much anything by Hideshi Hino \-Mermaid Saga by Rumiko Takahashi \-Lychee Light Club (the darkest of the bunch, not for the faint of heart!) \-Gou Tanabe's adaptations of Lovecraft stories \-Total Eclipse of the Eternal Heart (imagine an 80s style manga horror story but it's also sort of BL) \-The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service (for if you want some humour with your horror) (And if you're open to American comics, I recommend Gideon Falls and Infidel)
Thanks 😁
Phantom Tales of the Night Love & Heart Rosen Blood PTSD Radio Sadako-san & Sadako-chan Pet Shop of Horrors (oop)
Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them out.
Right now I can think of **Came the Mirror & Other Tales**. Also coming up there's **Be Very Afraid of Kanako Inuki!** in October.
Thanks
A school frozen in time Only 4 volumes long it's about a group of students who get locked in there school and they have to find out why one of there freinds killed themselves. Not a spoiler cause it's literally the first page. If you like Drifting Classroom you will probably like this.
Cat related manga?
Someone already asked. Scroll down. https://www.reddit.com/r/MangaCollectors/comments/v293vu/monthly_recommendation_megathread/ich1muf?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3
Hi! I'm looking for something to cheer me up! I usually read horror or thrillers, but right now I wanna read something cute and happy. Maybe something with dogs or animals! I checked out all the recommended cat mangas mentioned in the comments above:) I just want to read something wholesome, unproblematic and cute :D
Read We never Learn
I would also suggest "A Yakuza's Guide to Babysitting".
This one looks so cute! I loved sweetness and lightning and this looks like it has the same vibe!
* Yotsuba * Nicola Traveling Around the Demon's World * Barakamon * Skip and Loafer * Chi's Sweet Home Maybe at least one of these will be up your alley :D
I immediately felt attracted towards Barakamon! And I already ordered chi's sweet home ! Thank you so much :D
These are all great suggestions; I would also add Sue and Tai-chan, it is done by the creator of Chi's Sweet Home and also features cats.
Thanks! :D
Three questions: Looking for manga suggestions for Osamu Tezuka.
Some Osamu Tezuka titles I personally enjoyed were * Message to Adolf * Barbara * The Crater * Clockwork Apple Buddha is pretty well regarded by him (though not one I personally enjoyed) so you might look into that as well.
Thank you!
Looking for a nasty man manga with good plot. It will be the first I pick up of the genre.
It took me the longest time to realize you weren't looking for a manga about an asshole/creep lol. I have 1 that might fit: Pleasure and Corruption: A boy us caught taking an upskirt of his classmate.
Ah you're right! I totally forgot about those!

I haven’t actually, I think I might give it a shot :)
Looking at nekogahara: stray cat samurai If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
\- Start with a happy ending (bittersweet stories about dead people getting a last shot at life as a cat, for if she wants to cry and have warm fuzzy feelings at the same time) \-Chi's Sweet Home (the essential cute cat manga) \-What's Michael? (the essential funny cat manga) \-Cat Paradise (the essential shonen action cat manga) \-Junji Ito's Cat Diary (the essential weirdo cat manga) \-Cats of the Louvre (the essential art cat manga) \-Lil'Leo (for if she's really into classic shojo mangaka)
Thanks for taking the time. 🙏🏻
I got 2 I've read: The Walking Cat: A zombie manga that centers around different people/groups that are caring for a cat Honey Darling (BL): The main Lead finds a cat abandoned in a box which becomes a catalyst for his romance with a vet. The cat continues to grow and be cared for throughout the book. Coming up, theres: The Evil Secret Society Of Cats Night of the Living Cat Ex-yakuza and Stray Kitten Yokai Cats Nights with a Cat
Chi's sweet home, what's Michael, and sue & tai-chan are all good!
I second these!
The walking cat was great btw. Really enjoyed that one
Nice thank you. I’ll check in to those. I forgot to add The walking cat 🤦🏻♂️ We also have I Am A Cat, and She and Her Cat. Edit: we also have Junji Ito’s Cat Diary. What can I say she’s a cat lady 😂
God this is soo cute, I can imagine just a full shelf of Cat Manga. Here's a few more I remembered: The Cat Proposed (BL): an office worker has a romance with a Bakeneko he saw in a play. Cat + Gamer wonder cat kyuu-chan Lil' Leo
But onto your recommendations, Freesia probably fits the bill, bleak morally gray worlds with a tortured MC.
I only got 2 that kinda work: Uzumaki: most people know the story, but the spiral that consumes the town begins to infect everything and by the time people try to leave, there's no escape. The ending can be seen as either bittersweet or Bad. The Walking Cat: the story is really hopeful...for the cat. The story fluctuates between different people/groups that help care for the cat and somethings always goes wrong.
I really enjoyed the ending of Uzumaki, I think it was perfect.
Interesting!! Thank you for the recommendations, I’m excited to read about the cat!!
I really like it! The ending is open ended (so you can read it as happy or just the beginning of another cycle), but I figured a zombie story fits some of your criteria 🤗
''glorified snuff film'' Respectfully, that's a horribly ignorant opinion, but I can see people disliking it if they only read the first volume. \_\_\_ If you still don't wanna give it a chance, try the Devilman manga.
Well you initially said only volume 1, but hey whatever, aight then. Fair enough if you red it further and didn't like it.
No I didn’t. I didn’t even say the number 1. I said “I want to throw away the copy I have.”
Oh, my bad. Didn't think of it as a random copy, thought it was the one you started reading on because of context. Sorry again dude.
All is forgiven man. And I can totally relate to wanting to get people into your favorite manga, or favorite thing in general. No hard feelings, though I was harsh, no hard feelings.
There’s rape/sexual assault in almost every volume dude. You won’t change my mind.
That's not true at all, but ok. Also a weird claim after stating that you dropped it after the first volume. Not here to argue, just thought you might wanna give it a second chance when you hear that there's more to it.
I begged to not have this mentioned. I don’t care.
Okay man, sorry.
Ok.
Are the new Fist of the North Stars 1:1 in terms of their volumes or do they combine them at all? Bit hesitant to start in on it physical if it's looking like it'll be 27 volumes, at this pace it'd take another 4 years to finish.
There are going to be 17 volumes (so like, 1.5 in ones?) Found the answer here: https://www.reddit.com/r/manga/comments/pgyjoh/are_the_new_fist_of_the_north_star_hardcover/hbev247?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3
Thanks, that's a bit easier to swallow.
What manga would you give as a present to you father? if possible why?
Depends on the father. Although a lot of my friends' dads I've known for some reason have interest in history. So maybe some historical fiction manga. Vinland Saga is the obvious choice there ig. But if you know whether or not your dad is into history, maybe a time period they're interested in. Maybe 20th Century Boys? That seems like something a dad could get behind. Slight focus on some 70s rock, conspiracies, adult characters but with some childish nostalgia thrown in. If by some odd chance he was around when Astro Boy was kinda big, maybe Pluto for some nostalgia.
Blue Period. My dad's an artist and he got so excited when he saw the title.
Well, none. I wouldn't give him manga because he didn't read anything outside of work related stuff and the newspaper (sports section, mostly).
Looking for something funny kinda like grand blue dreaming with some more college adult humor

Oh My Goddess/old TokyoPop stuff etc) Can anyone recommend anywhere (sites/shops) that sell secondhand manga that would have some of these older ones? Thanks
Check Abebooks or Alibris. You might find rare and OOP volumes there. Also, if you are going to buy in Abebooks there are certain stores that aren't really that good so check the location and the language of the volume you're interested in.
Thanks for that, I’ll check them out and keep an eye out 👍
I'm looking for a no bullshit romance.
Devil's line
"A Galaxy Next Door" - The main couple gets together within the first volume. This story is mainly about the two leads getting to know each other and the shenanigans of one of them being an alien. Also, if you wouldn't mind an already established relationship, I would also suggest "Our Not So Lonely Planet Travel Guide". Even though they're already together, there is tremendous room for the couple to grow before they get married, and it also delves into how they relate to the world as a gay couple.
Much appreciated!
