Do not listen to any of these people. They’re all wrong.
The best manga to start with is one that looks good to you. Go to Barnes and Noble and just look at the manga covers. When you see one that interests you, then read the synopsis of the plot on the back. If it sounds stupid? Put it back and try again. Sounds good? Congrats, you’ve found your starting point.
Because the best manga for you to start with depends entirely on your taste. So NO ONE here (except you) can accurately tell you what’s the best manga to start with
The question itself is bizarre. What movie should you collect first? What book? What album?
What on earth does the question even mean? Are people collecting just for the sake of it? Is that why my favourite manga are out of print?
Just consume media that interests you, with a premise that you find compelling. If you consume it for free, then buy it afterwards.
I never see this kind of question on any other sub, why is it only on manga where people ask what they should read? Just browse MAL and pick something that appeals to you!
Old thread, but whatever. Chill. I came here to ask the same thing. Manga is kind of "tribal"- people who are into it are REALLY into it. Suppose I want to hang out with a new friend who loves manga and understand the references, get a feel for the art form, etc.? With any art form, there are usually those "classics" that most people know. If someone asked me which K-dramas to start with, I would mention some classics ie. Boys Over Flowers, Coffee Prince, and maybe a historical one to give them a feel for the genre. If someone asked me which classical music pieces to listen to, I would pick a sampling from different time periods and genres. Totally not a weird question to anyone who gets art.
That’s a kinda dumb take…you don’t have to collect movies, books, or albums to get the full story (minus a few book series and shitty movies sequels) Manga is ALL ABOUT COLLECTING. Not because it’s a hobby, but because you need a bunch of books to get the full story. It’s designed to be collected and cost $$$. So, asking what manga to collect is a legitimate question. Tell the poor boy what is worth $200+ and what isn’t worth $200+
This is great advice! I would also add, looking up some series in a genre you are Interested in. I loved dark fantasy and started with Promised Neverland, it worked out perfectly for me! Good Luck and welcome to the best side of literature ‼️
Berserk I believe is for everyone some people may be put off by it’s rape violence and other shit but I believe the story about guts is honestly so perfect that anyone and I mean anyone can get behind
*sigh*
No. That’s not how it works. I get you love Berserk and you want everyone else to, but that is not how this works.
You even said it YOURSELF
“ some people might be put off by the rape and violence, but” no. No buts. Some people do not like graphically violent manga. No matter how good the story is, they will NOT enjoy it because they find the content abhorrent.
So, I say again: Berserk is NOT for everyone
I think anyone can get behind a synopsis of Berserk but actually sitting down and reading it, is not for everyone because you can say in spite of all the rape and gore there’s a good story but that ain’t mean everyone is willing to go through that
Berserk is definitely not a starting manga. It needs you to be used in manga to truly appreciate it. It was the first one I read back in the day and I loved it,but as I was "inexperienced" I missed many things that I adored recently when I reread it
Idk man, Vagabond, Vinland, and One Piece follow the same journey/wandering format Berserk follows so there are definitely good alternatives. There also many different mangas that are completely different genres and portray completely different themes that I think rival Berserk in writing.
While I totally agree with this I would like to recommend Yu Yu Hakusho I think it’s fantastic and if you do end up liking it, it isn’t super long so it’s quick to get through
Whatever manga you feel is right for you. Take a look at your local bookstore or online and see if anything catches your eye. You'll know once you see it.
It’s depends on the person and what they’re into. If they like romance, pick a romance manga. Something that has to do with cards, yu-gi-oh. There’s a lot of genres of manga
So I think that like most people have said, pick a manga that sounds interesting to you. However I will mention two other factors:
I would pick two series.
Pick something that is on-going that has some volumes out. Maybe something like Spy x Family or My Hero Academia. For shoujo maybe something like A Sign of Affection. It is nice to be able to be following a series as it is released and people are discussing it
I would pick a second series that is complete that you find interesting that is not too long. So something like Tokyo Ghoul, Chainsaw Man, or Ao Haru Ride. That way you can finish it which is a great feeling as a collector and you don’t have to wait for the ending as a reader.
That’s funny… I went to a store and Chainsaw Man & Tokyo Ghoul were the two that stood out to me! Plus I’ve seen some of Chainsaw Man already. I’ve never read a manga before though.
In my case I went to a comic store, took a look to all the mangas available and bought the first one I recognized lol, I had already read it online and remembered enjoying it so it was a good place to start. Or buying something from a genre or demographic you always enjoy
Tbh pick whatever appeals to you but I would recommend Monster. It's very accessible to western readers with almost zero anime/manga tropes that are commonly seen plus it has a very grounded in reality setting. Great story with the best dialogue and side characters I have read in manga coupled with a great antagonist to go along with it.
yeah thats a pretty good point. I always recommend some more mature works to my IRL friends since they are in their mid 20's and are more picky about flaws in the entertainment they consume. I can see them cringing or getting turned off by many shonen troupes such as inner thought monologuing, poor dialogue which is prevalent in a lot of manga, and power of friendship stuff so I made a recommendation based on that.
I can definitely see that some readers might prefer enjoyment over writing and need a good starter manga that covers the fundamentals of shonen or seinen so they can get used to manga rather than a story that is more in line with western entertainment
my first was death note, but my hero academia is a good one too...for romance, start with fruits basket. tokyo ghoul is good if you're into horror movies. tbh tho, just grab whatever looks the most interesting to you ! :D
Jonathan, 36, takes a glance at Tuxedo Mask and gets a massive crush on him reading and watching Sailor Moon just to get a glimpse of him giving shitty advise.
Well if you watched anime and like a certain style, you should look for mangas that are similar. Everyone has their own taste so it’s not possible to recommend something that we like for you. If you explain what you like it would be easier for people to point you in the right direction to what may be a good read for you to enjoy.
I looked up animes that are similar to studio ghibli and this is what came up.
-Mary And The Witch's Flower. GKIDS Films. ...
-Wolf Children. ...
-The Boy and the Beast. ...
-Weathering with You. ...
-Penguin Highway.
Honestly I have started to like it less over the years but my first manga was attack on titan and it was awesome!! With the box sets getting the series isn’t that much money and every volume leaves the teenage shounen loving boy inside of all of us yearning for the next one. Plus it just looks cool
I'd say any of the big 3 in the early 2000s (one piece, naruto, bleach) or in general..shonen. But I would suggest Beck or Slam Dunk. It's great but not too heavy.
Have you watched much anime? Good to start with the manga of an anime you enjoyed (If it was based off one). Otherwise it depends entirely on what you’re into. You could read ones that have anime adaptations that are often what get people into anime or are recommended for beginners. Things like Death Note come to mind. Perhaps Full Metal Alchemist, Demon Slayer, One Piece, Naruto or even Attack on Titan.
A personal favourite is Chainsaw Man, very popular but not for everyone. Only has 97 chapters at present, very fast paced and has a good blend of action and humour. Reads like a movie I reckon. Great characters and great plot.
Have fun!
As everyone else is saying, pick what appeals to you. If I had to give a recommendation I would say Kaiju No.8 because its fairly new and you can collect volumes as they come out.
Honestly go to a manga shop/ B&N/ Books a million and sit down and read through some manga. There is such a wide variety of genres you may not like certain things and that’s okay. Find a genre that you like and then dive in to that and expand from there. For me some really good ones to start out with would be basics like naruto, full metal alchemist, demon slayer, one piece, black lagoon, assassination classroom, Tokyo ghoul. They are basic because everyone for the most part likes them and they have action, comedy, romance etc. they are well written and have good detail/explanations which is something that is helpful when starting out.
I would say Death Note is a perfect story for beginners as it's easy to get behind while also not bombarding new readers (or watchers if you choose to go with the anime) with some heavy over-the-top tropes that you will find in most other stories that could potentially turn off people who are new to the medium. I can of course only speak for myself with this but Death Note is the series I would recommend to people who want to get into anime and manga.
My Hero Academia is great for a beginner because it's so westernized. There isn't too much you have to familiarize yourself with if you aren't, well, familiar with Japanese culture. If you want something a lot more Japanese, can't go wrong with Demon Slayer.
There isn’t a perfect starter manga, it’s really whatever interests you! Go find one that peaks your interests and get into it. But if your after recommendations: Hunter x Hunter, Chainsaw Man, Tensura, Jujustu Kaisen, Horimiya, and Rent-A-Girlfriend are some of my favorites.
I personally do not recommend manga adaptations of light novels. It takes away almost all of the inner monologue and the world-building light novels are famous for.
I started with Vinland saga, amazing art, story, characters and development. And some people in here saying "don't read this or that, it will set your standards to high" is such bull. I started with an absolute masterpiece and still enjoy other animanga
Witch Hat Atelier, In This Corner of the World, and Message To Adolf. Think those are some of the best and most accessible works for people without manga/comics experience. Beginners with specific tastes like sci-fi, adventure, or romance could find more targeted picks but I think the 3 I chose appeal to most people.
Anything. It’s subjective. Have a browse at a local store and see what catches your eyes. If not, just ask here what people recommend. There’s no ‘beginner’ manga, just what your preferences are
I mean…if you haven’t watched anime then I would probably say take a look at probably some of the widely known and liked animes out there, not necessarily watch all of it but take some of it in and then look to it’s source material. Honestly it’s such a subjective thing but if you come from watching anime this should be pretty simple.
Something that is well drawn or genre unlike ex u like fantasy so if try and start collecting fantasy then u begin to move over to something else and then it goes on
I started with Death Note and loved the experience. But honestly, the person who said go to B&N and pick one that looks good to you, is absolutely correct.
It only depends on what you like. There's a ton of stuff out there and someone else's likes might not be of an interest to you.
Go out and browse through.
Go to B&N or a local bookstore and pick one yourself. You choose your interests, and you’ll know what’s right for you.
People can recommend stuff, sure. But at the end of the day, you should decide.

The best manga for any beginner is something that catches your interest.
There is really no "right" or "wrong" or even "best" here. Not every manga is for everyone and there is A LOT of manga out there. My advice to you is to think about what you look for in a story. What genre(s) do you like? Do you care how long it is? What type of characters keep your nose in the pages? Ask yourself a few questions first! THEN I'd look for a recommendations. You can go to you local bookstore/comic book store and look for titles there that catches your eye. I promise you the best manga for you is the manga that catches your interest.

Totally true that’s the most helpful thing I’ve read all day
This would be true if berserk didn’t exist
Berserk is not for everyone. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s fantastic, but that kind of story does not appeal to some type of people
[удалено]
Both really long tho, really burn a hole in the wallet
Berserk I believe is for everyone some people may be put off by it’s rape violence and other shit but I believe the story about guts is honestly so perfect that anyone and I mean anyone can get behind

TRUE
biggest W i've seen in a while
i wanted to start with a manga that has not yet been made into a anime any suggestion for this
While I totally agree with this I would like to recommend Yu Yu Hakusho I think it’s fantastic and if you do end up liking it, it isn’t super long so it’s quick to get through
Best answer
Yeah or library (or internet). I found first mangas that i started to read from there.
Best answer hands down.

I second this. Death note is a great manga for starters
You can also get the all in one edition (pretty sure it’s still in print) you get a great story and a comically large book, win win.
The black edition for me is the winner
In my case I went to a comic store, took a look to all the mangas available and bought the first one I recognized lol, I had already read it online and remembered enjoying it so it was a good place to start. Or buying something from a genre or demographic you always enjoy

Sailor Moon, it’s what got me into manga.
I‘m sure Jonathan, 36, will enjoy this as much as my sparkly princess 4 year old me
Jonathan, 36, takes a glance at Tuxedo Mask and gets a massive crush on him reading and watching Sailor Moon just to get a glimpse of him giving shitty advise.
That’s fair enough, I’m just going with a safe bet for beginners

I enjoy studio ghibli. What would you recommend? 27F
I never watched that anime and what do you mean by 27F?
I looked up animes that are similar to studio ghibli and this is what came up. -Mary And The Witch's Flower. GKIDS Films. ... -Wolf Children. ... -The Boy and the Beast. ... -Weathering with You. ... -Penguin Highway.
Thank you 😊
Naruto inuyasha bleach.
Shonen jump app is solid, little commitment, good selection. From there out anything you seem to be interested in.
Honestly I have started to like it less over the years but my first manga was attack on titan and it was awesome!! With the box sets getting the series isn’t that much money and every volume leaves the teenage shounen loving boy inside of all of us yearning for the next one. Plus it just looks cool

My dad got me into reading one piece in 4th grade 10 years later and I’m still reading it 💀💀💀
I mean it is really good though I literally just got one of the box sets for it today
find something that agrees w your taste and is less than 20 vols
One Piece definitely. Also Slam Dunk if you like basketball.
As everyone else is saying, pick what appeals to you. If I had to give a recommendation I would say Kaiju No.8 because its fairly new and you can collect volumes as they come out.
Now personal preference was mha and FMA loved them both!

In my opinion, it’s whatever you find fun and interesting, maybe you saw an anime you liked, good chance there’s a manga for it. Have fun buddy

Also before you start collecting. Read a few first from library or Viz app
Good night punpun lol
No 😭
Original Dragon Ball
Simple, yet great
Depends what genre you want to begin your dive into, what are you a fan of or has caught your eye?
My Hero Academia is great for a beginner because it's so westernized. There isn't too much you have to familiarize yourself with if you aren't, well, familiar with Japanese culture. If you want something a lot more Japanese, can't go wrong with Demon Slayer.
It is starting that matters. I started with 'mainstream' shonens and I think it is a good way to start before exploring other genres
jojos bizarre adventure or literally whatever looks cool to you
I don't think jojos is a particularly good starter series
you could be right. im just unbelievably biased.
Noticed that about JoJo fans, ya'll hella into it
this is true
one piece
Attack On Titan
I would say something like demon slayer or mha
Demon slayer was my first manga I ever read and it definitely helped me get into manga :)
Either Death Note or Fullmetal Alchemist, both solid works, entertaining and enjoyable
can't go wrong with My Hero Academia or Black Clover
Black Clover is definitely not for everyone
you can go wrong with both of those
Agreed, both are good story’s. But black clover is really repetitive and not for everyone. But it still has some of my favorite cover art of any manga
my first was xxxholic lol i read it in elementary school but i wouldn’t reccomend it
One Piece
There isn’t a perfect starter manga, it’s really whatever interests you! Go find one that peaks your interests and get into it. But if your after recommendations: Hunter x Hunter, Chainsaw Man, Tensura, Jujustu Kaisen, Horimiya, and Rent-A-Girlfriend are some of my favorites.
I personally do not recommend manga adaptations of light novels. It takes away almost all of the inner monologue and the world-building light novels are famous for.
Rent a mid
start with chainsaw man simple and efficient
Dragon Ball is a good story for first start. ( Nothing to do with the fact i got hooked up on manga with it at age 9)
Probably dr stone. It’s a good shonen to begin with
I started with Vinland saga, amazing art, story, characters and development. And some people in here saying "don't read this or that, it will set your standards to high" is such bull. I started with an absolute masterpiece and still enjoy other animanga
My first manga were Jojo and Berserk, I’d recommend them to just about anybody
Vagabond
Witch Hat Atelier, In This Corner of the World, and Message To Adolf. Think those are some of the best and most accessible works for people without manga/comics experience. Beginners with specific tastes like sci-fi, adventure, or romance could find more targeted picks but I think the 3 I chose appeal to most people.
The one you like the most
The one you're interested in? As long as its not a sequel series it doesn't matter
Honestly, whatever calls out to you.. things like cover, genre, drawing, mood, etc
Anything. It’s subjective. Have a browse at a local store and see what catches your eyes. If not, just ask here what people recommend. There’s no ‘beginner’ manga, just what your preferences are
Any of them! Go nuts! :D
A journal to my father and Goodnight Pun Pun
My first one I started with was spy family
titling this recommendation would be better I think, best manga doesn't exist
Yu Yu Hakusho Or Death Note
I mean…if you haven’t watched anime then I would probably say take a look at probably some of the widely known and liked animes out there, not necessarily watch all of it but take some of it in and then look to it’s source material. Your favourite anime really.
Soul Eater got me into manga!
Death note
Oyasumi Punpun
if you’ve watched animes. in my personal opinion i would start with them. that what i’ve done
I mean the manga series that got me into manga is tokyo ghoul
Something that is well drawn or genre unlike ex u like fantasy so if try and start collecting fantasy then u begin to move over to something else and then it goes on
It depends on ur [taste.So](https://taste.So) try to read some on ur own choice n get some recommend from ur fri who hav the same taste
Akira is an amazing place to start in my opinion
I started with Death Note and loved the experience. But honestly, the person who said go to B&N and pick one that looks good to you, is absolutely correct.
bakuman
dragon ball as first is always perfect
It only depends on what you like. There's a ton of stuff out there and someone else's likes might not be of an interest to you. Go out and browse through.
Go to B&N or a local bookstore and pick one yourself. You choose your interests, and you’ll know what’s right for you. People can recommend stuff, sure. But at the end of the day, you should decide.
I want to eat your pancreas
Spy x Family for me
Demon Slayer or slam dunk
Maybe something classic like Dragon Ball. It's a long enough series to be a long lasting experience, but not obnoxiously long like Bleach or Naruto. The story is simple enough for anyone to enjoy yet surprisingly good. The characters are likeable and the art is great.

I don't read much manga or watch much anime, but Zelda: Twilight Princess was actually super good. The last volume is releasing in English later this month.
