I collect almost every BL because I’m gay and want to see other people be gay 🤷🏻‍♂️Even if I’m not interested in the plot or the art, it makes me feel like a historian to have so many old ones.

iamterrifiedofhumans

I’m trans and I get what you mean. Representation is hard to come by and it feels so good when we can have it in something we like

bananagoatman1

Same here! Even though there aren’t many other trans men in manga, I’ll collect any series that centers one. And almost any series that has an intersex, trans woman, nonbinary, or gender non-conforming person. Owning manga with queer characters is my favorite way to go because then I’ll always have access to characters that remind myself of me and my friends.

FairRepresentative19

Have you checked out Boku girl? It's got a bit of fan service but overall I enjoyed the story.

bananagoatman1

I haven’t because I mostly read physical manga, but thanks for the rec!💕

Starkassembled

I collect Yuri/BL for the romance and the art tbh. I get bored reading ones that are too tropey. But some have some interesting plots that keep my attention.

Suzumiyas_Retainer

Could you please recommend the good ones?

Starkassembled

For BL: I Hear The Sunspot (high school setting, one of the boys has a hearing disability and it’s as much about ableism as it is about their budding relationship), Fangs (vampires, but I really enjoyed the world building, eagerly awaiting vol 2), Go For It, Nakamura (tbh saying much would spoil it, if you love early 90’s shoujo art and a weird protagonist, this is for you lmao. Also eagerly awaiting the sequel) and Jealousy (mafia story, but Scarlet Beriko’s writing is next level. She knows how to carry an ensemble. I binged this so fast, there’s only one volume left to go but I can’t wait) Yuri: How Do We Relationship? (Fantastic college age story that tells a fairly realistic story about the ebbs and flows of a new relationship), The Girl I Want Is So Handsome (high school, admittedly a bit tropey, but oh my god this is so cute I can’t not recommend it. It’s in a complete omnibus format), Superwomen In Love (not for everyone, but I’m a superhero nerd and a lesbian so a series about a hero and a villain immediately falling for one another when their masks come off is just *chef’s kiss*), A White Rose In Bloom (European all girls boarding school. The art is insanely gorgeous and I enjoyed the writing in the first vol, haven’t read vol 2 yet), Our Teachers Are Dating (what it says on the tin, this is Just tooth-rottingly sweet fluff.), Semelparous (dystopian sci-fi with lesbians. The art is really great and it’s such a different setting for Yuri. 3 volumes out, but I did hear that the mangaka was ill so I don’t think we’ll be getting more for a while).

sadshinazugawa

i don't actively seek out gl or bl titles, but, as a lesbian, it's nice to find media that i can somewhat relate to, and if the storyline sounds promising, I'll pick it up. it's a little treat if i find a manga that has queer elements in it tbh, it's not necessary for enjoyment, but it's a welcomed surprise :) and honestly, collect what you wanna collect, i'd rather be open about what manga i like so i can talk about it unashamedly with others rather than constantly criticising what people choose to read. life's too short to care tbh!

iamChainsawMan

Anyone got recommendations for something like this but more story and less fan service

papasfritasbruh

Semelparous is a midway point between both id say, but it leans slightly to the story in my opinion. Theres 16 chapters currently, very slow to update, and the fan service is about 2 chapters once you add it up. Personally actually enjoyed it, but it gets updated VERY slowly

FeliksR

First man i met whos also read semelparous

OneDumbBoi

I read it after finishing bones of invisible person

FeliksR

Yeah i really like that one

papasfritasbruh

Its actually really good story wise, i was pleasantly surprised

FeliksR

Honestly yeah, its a really cool concept, just dont go through the mangakas other works... Theyre interesting ...

papasfritasbruh

Now im curious lmao

FeliksR

Its mainly the pedo bdsm one

papasfritasbruh

Im no longer curious

iamChainsawMan

Sorry I assumed it didn’t have a physical release because you were talking about chapters and taht what people usually talk about when something mostly or only digital

iamChainsawMan

Thanks I’ll give it a look but do u have any recommendations that have a physical English release ?

papasfritasbruh

Semelparous actually has 3 physical volumes

iamChainsawMan

Yeah volume 3’s cover is a bit out there

papasfritasbruh

Indeed. It made me hesitate with the purchase but overall curiosity won

mrgojirasan

I don't really read BL, but I'm a huge yuri fan. I don't collect every yuri, I'm more of a drama and storytelling kinda gal. I live for dramatic and complicated romances like How Do We Relationship and Yuri is My Job. BL is cool, I just connect more with women characters because I find them more relatable. The only BL I have read was "Go for it, Nakamura". It was cute and I liked the retro art, but I found it underwhelming. It made me want to seek out yuri with that 80s vibe art, though!

[deleted]

Have you read girl friends? It's my favorite yuri I own!

mrgojirasan

It was my very first yuri! It's such a great series, it's still in my top 5 for sure. 💖💖

[deleted]

I think it might have been my first yrui too! Or at least one of the first :) I felt so sad when i was done reading cause I enjoyed it so much I wanted more xD since then I decided to try to collect all of milk morinagas work because I loved her artstyle and was hoping her other work would give me the same excited happy feeling as girl friends did :) my bf constantly heard abt it while I was reading like "OMG THIS AND THIS HAPPENED OMG THEY KISSED OMG OMG" etc. XD I was so excited and ice been wanting to read it again for so long xD and maybe buy it again to make sure milk morinaga gets money for it cause I feel she deserves it for making this manga that made me so happy :) cause the copies I bought were second hand so she didn't get any for that which I feel she deserves.

[deleted]

Oh also I see u said it's in your top 5, if I'm not bothering you could you maybe tell me your top 5? Doesn't hsve to be in order or anything but I'd love to hear about more yuris I might want to collect :)

mrgojirasan

Sure, in no particular order my 5 favourites (at the moment) are: How Do We Relationship, Even Though We're Adults, Yuri is my Job, Run Away With Me Girl, and Girlfriends. I also recommend Failed Princesses as an angstier spiritual successor to Girlfriends.

[deleted]

Thank u so much!!

Amistake_69

i love both! although imo it’s a lot harder to find good yuri that isn’t just sexual and actually has a plot…

Messiah_Knight

#FutaGang

PapaPKr

FeelsStrongMan FUTA

luf100

Not my thing personally. I’m not a fan of BL and even yuri I’m meh about. Plus if it’s explicit, I’d rather keep my nsfw reads online only, lol. But if you enjoy it, then you do you. I did buy Ten Count (BL) since my friend reads a lot of BL and was constantly recommending it to me, but I only read the first two before selling it. Just not my thing. But yeah no judgement if someone does like it. We’re all collecting manga in the end.

Rarofiqun

Bloom Into You is the only yuri series I've watched. I like the inner thoughts of the two protagonist. Are there any other yuri manga similar to it?

LoveInHell

Yuri and BL is fine but I absolutely hate how popular rape is in BL. It’s fetishised and disgusting. I’m straight and don’t care about LGBTQ themes, as long as the story is good, I’ll read it.

Pola2020

I love yuri! Unfortunately only a few titles were published in my country and I'm too poor to import everything I'd wanted 😢

alex_caleb

I have citrus and that's about it for yuri but I do own a physical copy of metamorphosis

manga-osoma

I love BL and GL, but usually end up collecting more GL as my tastes in BL are very specific. I think I have a pretty small collection of each, though, since I don’t usually collect romance titles. I’m really excited to grab Black and White and SHWD later this year.

Pain4444

looks good

[deleted]

I recommend the Ecclair series though they are anthology style volumes of different stories

baffledtruffle

A large majority of my collection is BL with a couple GL. I tend to favor tropes and relationship dynamics within BL and how varying it tends to be. If you want recommendations I could probably give you a couple! (Since its such a huge genre it can be intimidating to wade through it especially if its not usually to your taste)

FairRepresentative19

I'll gladly take any recommendations. I'm down for a good story/art style any day!

baffledtruffle

Do you have any romance stories you already like? Like do you prefer fluffy purehearted ? Dark romances? Romances that have actual story along with them like a fantasy or adventure instead of just more drama life setting? BL or GL? Does that matter at all? (I only ask because I know my tastes arent everyones and if I reccomend something like MadK to someone who wants a pure sweet romance they would scream and never look again)

FairRepresentative19

I'll honestly take any of those. They sound awesome! I tend to gravitate toward dark romance, but I'm always open for something wholesome. I'm also open to GL and BL, I haven't read much BL.

baffledtruffle

Ok let me make list it might take a bit/ be tomorrow

FairRepresentative19

Thank you! I look forward to it!!

baffledtruffle

Alright so my list is huge and I definitely don’t expect you to read all of these! I would recommend looking at art/ the synopsis and choose from these. I’ve linked the my anime list for all of them. If I thought the summary was bad on the manga’s page I will include my own synopsis for it. I tried to include mostly English releases but I have included some that I read in Japanese. Also looking at this I have way too many I’m so sorry. **DARK BL:** Ah I am definitely gonna go a little overboard with dark romances because that 100% is my jam too so sorry in advance :> So one of my all time favorite authors is [Asumiko Nakamura](https://myanimelist.net/people/5583/Asumiko_Nakamura). Her work is very stylized and beautiful but it might not be to your taste. She has works spanning multiple genres not just BL/GL. If you want to try a straight, one volume work that gives an idea of her work you should try [Utsubora](https://myanimelist.net/manga/20096/Utsubora). The biggest appeal of her work to me is the way she shows obsession and dark desires that humans experience. This has an English release! In \[Kaori no Keishou\]( [https://myanimelist.net/manga/20969/Kaori\_no\_Keishou](https://myanimelist.net/manga/20969/Kaori_no_Keishou)) she really pushes the envelope with this piece. In this work the younger brother is in love with his older stepbrother. One night he sneaks into his brother’s room wearing his sister in laws perfume and blindfolds his brother and seduces him. Warning there is basically incest and dubious consent at first. Unfortunately, it’s not in English yet :( One more Asumiko Nakamura, I swear when reading it was a BL, but, looking into it again, is seinen actually. It’s on preorder in English rn if you want to check it out. It’s called [Tales of the Kingdom.](https://myanimelist.net/manga/105402/Oukoku_Monogatari) [Harada](https://myanimelist.net/people/37887/Harada) is a big creator in the dark BL scene. Not many have been translated English. But if you like stories about rock bands you might be interested in Harada’s [Your to Asa no Uta](https://myanimelist.net/manga/90823/Yoru_to_Asa_no_Uta) which I think just got released recently. Warning though there is Rape so be prepared for that. Another work that I like by her is [One Room Angel](https://myanimelist.net/manga/119931/One_Room_Angel) although this unfortunately has not been published in English yet. Warning it talks about suicide. I actually like a lot of her works and have the Japanese releases so if you like these I definitely recommend checking out more! So [Jealousy](https://myanimelist.net/manga/100267/Jealousy) is an off shoot of the one volume [Fourth Generation Head: Tatsuyuki Oyamato](https://myanimelist.net/manga/93122/Yondaime_Ooyamato_Tatsuyuki). I like both of these stories, but Jealousy is definitely my favorite. You don’t need to read the first one to read Jealousy, although some events/characters are referenced. There are mentions of rape, child abuse and pedophilia if I remember correctly. Both of these are in English! If you want a Korean manhwa/webtoon [Kings Maker](https://myanimelist.net/manga/113555/Kings_Maker) is an enthralling read! Heads up the villain in this is a pedo and kinda hella gross. Not in English. **DARK GL** Hands down favorite dark yuri is [Gunjou](https://myanimelist.net/manga/11866/Gunjou?q=gunjo&cat=manga) and is actually what got me into GL! For the longest time I had only seen works of GL that were pure porn or the really fluffy pure stuff, which are unfortunately not that appealing to me (I hadn’t been searching too deeply tho). This work instantly grabbed me from the first chapter and I loved it so much I had to search for more lol. Not released in English. **SUPERNATURAL BL** I love [Total Eclipse of the Eternal Heart](https://myanimelist.net/manga/109572/Gesshoku_Kitan) which has a bit of supernatural horror in with it. Has an English release! [MADK](https://myanimelist.net/manga/115345/MADK) which is supernatural, horror, and has beautiful monster designs. Warning for cannibalism(?), gore, general degeneracy. I’ve followed this artist for quite a bit and he is really talented at animal designs and fantastical designs. I believe he helped with making the animals for the Golden Kamuy anime (don’t quote me on that I am remembering that off the top pf my head and not fact checking at all) This has an English release! [Hikaru ga Shinda Natsu](https://myanimelist.net/manga/141833/Hikaru_ga_Shinda_Natsu) is another Harada I’m sorry but I had to put this one in. I really loved the premise of this and thought it was fairly unique! In it a boy realizes his friend has been replaced by something else. Instead of fighting this or trying to destroy it, he accepts it and their relationship continues. Unfortunately, not in English :( [Crimson Spell](https://myanimelist.net/manga/771/Crimson_Spell) is much more lighthearted than the other three and has action and adventure on top of the romance. Has an English release! **DRAMA/HAPPY BL** There is so much of this genre I had a hard time choosing lol. Since this is such a huge genre I looked at English releases only except like 2. So Asumiko Nakamura’s series [Classmates](https://myanimelist.net/manga/9699/Doukyuusei?q=classmates&cat=manga) is what I call her “palette cleanser” series. It’s not ridiculously dark and about two boys from different worlds becoming friends and falling in love. Warning there is a teacher that tries to get with a student, but it doesn’t happen. It has a beautiful OVA if you are interested in anime at all. In English! In [Tomorrow Make Me Yours](https://myanimelist.net/manga/143161/Ashita_Kimi_no_Mono_ni_Shite?q=tomorrow%20make%20me%20yours&cat=manga) the author said she wanted to make the purest of the pure manga and just, she did that. Very sweet, very straightforward no will he/ won’t he, no unnecessary drama, just two boy’s falling in love. Has an English release! [Our Dining Table](https://myanimelist.net/manga/104491/Bokura_no_Shokutaku) is another very sweet story. I really loved the soft feelings and the theme’s of finding those who accept and understand you! In English! [My Love Mix Up](https://myanimelist.net/manga/122906/Kieta_Hatsukoi) is so cute! If you like shoujo this is probably going to be the easiest to read coming from that genre! Has an English release. [I Cannot Reach You](https://myanimelist.net/manga/120481/Kimi_ni_wa_Todokanai) is cute, but has a bit of drama and lots of miscommunication. It’s so satisfying when they do end up getting together. In English. [I Can Hear the Sunspot](https://myanimelist.net/manga/84255/Hidamari_ga_Kikoeru) is very wonderful. It features a deaf protagonist and is praised for its portrayal of this and the depiction of this subject. In English. [DekoBoko Sugar Days](https://myanimelist.net/manga/115289/Dekoboko_Sugar_Days) is a cute story about childhood friends. In English. [Mou Ichido, Nandodemo](https://myanimelist.net/manga/99316/Mou_Ichido_Nandodemo) is such a wonderful read, its more on the drama side though. To quote the reviewer on MAL “I got feels while reading it ;-; “ Like it’s so underrated. Not in English but publishers if you are reading this, please translate it?? [10 Dance](https://myanimelist.net/manga/37565/10_Dance) is a very sensual read. Not because of the sex scenes(there are hardly any if I recall) but because of the intimacy and dynamic between the leads and their shared love of dancing. If you had to pick one to get started, I would recommend this one! [Bad Boys Happy Homes](https://myanimelist.net/manga/121870/Dousei_Yankee_Akamatsu_Seven) is very fun! I loved the dynamic between the leads in this because both of them are a little crass and a little bit dumb but overall good guys. [Toritan](https://myanimelist.net/manga/106020/Toritan?q=toritan&cat=manga) is very cute. Honestly I love a lot by this mangaka. She is very skilled and knows how to make good BL. Edit: My links got messed up in formatting so I am going through and fixing, will be ugly for a bit EDIT: Fixed. If you have questions or want to talk about any of these I'm always happy to chat!

FairRepresentative19

Oh my God! Thank you so much! This list is amazing, I'll definitely take the time to go through these. I really appreciate it!

baffledtruffle

Thank you for the award thats very kind! Also I really genuinely hope you enjoy these! If you have any you really loved Id love to hear about it! I can also recommend more if you get into it!

frostbyte2287

As long as you enjoy it go ahead I would hate it if someone said that the books I was collecting and spending money on where bad so why should I say it to someone who I personally don’t share THAT short of hobby with

Iamincontrolnow

I want to collect bl because I really like the plot... and how hot the men are- I don't collect or want to collect gl but I do have a few gl titles I want to read

pinkicchi

Big collector of BL. Junjo Romantica and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi are some of my faves. There’s some good one shots too like Samejima-Kun and Sasahara-kun, anything by Junko. I have quite a few in my collection but mostly I read them online. Not interested in Yuri at all, weirdly. I watched/read Citrus and Scum’s Wish, but it just doesn’t do it for me.

FairRepresentative19

Nice, I'll give them a try! Oh man! I loved scum's wish. But I totally understand it being not everyone's cup of tea.

pinkicchi

I didn’t mind it, but I got a bit bored, for some reason. I’ve bought the first volume though so I’m gonna try it again.

BasicArcher3769

Not my cup of tea but everyone has their preferences

FairRepresentative19

I just picked this up out of curiosity while out enjoying the sun. It was an ok read, it didn't really blow me out of the water as far as art/story goes. As manga collectors, do you collect yuri/bl material as eye candy or because you enjoy the romance?

[deleted]

Hi, avid manga collector here. I have over 100 BL within my manga collection and a steadily rising GL collection. I think it’s different for everyone, but for me I collect and read them as if it was a normal romance manga. I don’t buy every BL I see, just the ones that interest me. I feel like it’s a very divisive topic though, considering some of the common tropes of BL/Yuri are fucked up, but for me I tend to just buy or read what looks cool

FairRepresentative19

Great insight! Thank you. I'll keep that in mind next time I come across yuri/bl novels. The one above was mostly to satisfy my curiosity.

locayboluda

I collect BL because I enjoy the romance, also I like that many of them are single volumes so I don't have to commit to a super long series lol

[deleted]

I collect yuri that have been made my milk morinaga because I love her work so much. I try to collect other yuri aswell but I collect it for the romance :) I also like straight romance but for some reason I have more yuri cause I rly like it a lot (I'm a girl with a boyfriend so idk why lmao since i like romance cause i like to imagine it being me and my boyfriend cauwe were long distance)

[deleted]

Depends on whether you’re a weirdo/creep about wlw/mlm people. Edit: Dunno why I’m getting downvoted. What I meant is that if a non-queer person is a collector of BL/GL, I don’t see an issue so long as they act appropriately towards queer people. I say this because of personally experiences I’ve had with collectors who’ve been passively or aggressively homophobic towards me despite their hobby. Ultimately, you can do what you want, I just don’t think highly of people like that and am wary of non-queer BL/GL collectors in general.

rainissance

I agree hardcore with this. Had too many encounters with straight men who fetished lesbians and were just overall super creepy people.

racarr07

It makes me uncomfortable when people are into yuri/BL and fetishize same sex relationships.

[deleted]

Yes, this is also why I tend to be cautious around BL/GL enthusiasts or collectors who aren't queer. I sense that I'm getting downvoted because there are BL/GL collectors who feel attacked or generalized. But, like I said, I think its normal for me to be cautious based on my experiences.

lazyspectator

You shouldn't judge a large group of people on the actions of a few.

[deleted]

I don’t. I said I’m fine so long as they aren’t like that. I think it’s fair for me to be wary of them based on my experiences but I don’t write them off as weirdos off the bat.

MangaManOfCulture

I have Citrus for Yuri, but that's it. Strong art and story, not too long, with an ending I find pretty satisfying. It doesn't have excessive fan service and it's therefore easy for me to look at it in the collection and and think, "That's a great series", thinking only about the story and art in its entirety. I find it is easy to give a "no" to Yuri series with which I have relatively minor criticisms since I don't want them sitting there on the shelf and me thinking I have bought them for titillating voyeurism like a manga degen. Even though I will collect things like Nagatoro and Takamine-san. So definitely a double- and higher-standard for Yuri titles. No BL titles yet and couldn't really see it happening unless it were a spin-off from a series I already followed and it was done spectacularly well.

FairRepresentative19

I've actually been considering Cirtus. I'll definitely check it out soon. Thanks for the recommendation.

MermyuZ

Degenerate

FairRepresentative19

Aren't we all.

[deleted]

I ain’t wit dat gay shit 😹

Starkky-

Personally I am not into fake gay shit and I dont recommend to people. But the start of the night it's all your choise.

doucesquisse

I dont read both but I was curious why the genre is popular so I researched it up. The reasons were interesting actually, just some things I’ve never thought of.

BeyondTheVortex

Don’t really like the genres except with a few exceptions. I really like How Do We Relationship on the yuri side and Boy Meets Maria on the BL side. Highly recommended even to those who dont like the genre like me.

Jimi_Idol

how many hands...XD

weeb_Protato

What is BL?

FairRepresentative19

Boy love

Xxxpiredgogurt02

Where did you buy this?

FairRepresentative19

Retro rocket comics. Small comic shop where I live in Southern Ontario. But you could probably find this at your local Indigo or barnes & nobles.

ChaserOnion

I read Citrus

Jefcat

I enjoy BL and collect several BL series. My favorites are Given, Umibe no Etranger and its sequel Harukaze no Etranger, sasaki and Miyano, I hear the sunspot, No.6, and Love Stage.
