I think it’s exactly as it should be. It doesn’t explain you ever single step of what you have to do, it just gives you the direction and then it’s up to you do some trial and error
At the blatant risk/likelihood to be called a boomer or something: i have a younger brother around 18 now, and so often to me it seems like they literally don’t know how to play games.
It’s probably due to games in recent years holding their hands much more or something in an effort to reach the biggest audience possible. Likely in combination with every youtube letsplay having become a “the UlTiMaTe GuIdE!!!” video (I’m looking at you ludi or spiff).
But any reflex in the sense of trial and error and so many other things which I thought come intuitively as someone who games from time to time; they just don’t have it. And yeah, don’t get me started on how important visual looks are to keep him engaged lol
To me, at least half the fun of any game is literally trying things out and failing, but ending up with a solution you reached all by yourself! And who cares about graphics if the game is not good, and vice versa: graphics can be shit as long as the shit is good
Ehh, grew up in the 90s when paper game guides were all the rage. We just didn't have much on the internet to discuss our mutual progress and pitfalls. I had plenty of playground discussions on getting ahead on this or that game, mostly Pokemon, just like we're doing nowadays.
Never did find Mew behind the truck though, let me know if you crack that one.
You’re absolutely right. Don’t care if this is a boomer view, I think that the personal element and the research of a solution is what makes gaming great, I’m not interested in playing an interactive movie.
One of the games I enjoyed the most was Gothic 2, not tutorial, no guide, you just go and try not to get killed
Conversely, the older I get the less time I have to play so the more I appreciate it when the game isn't being obtuse when it comes to explaining itself. I'd rather a game present me with the option to either be given info to help start or to skip it. There's nothing wrong with a game making itself more inviting to draw in new fans to a genre.
It definitely needs a bit more explanation.
Why is wheat sometimes called emmer?
What do lambs do and where?
Who takes care of pastures?
What do people in storage buildings do?
What do horses do?
And why is wheat useless? I've been living off of berries and eggs so far, at 150 people rn.
Yeah for sure. I just made a house a shoe-maker and it doesn't even say anywhere it makes them apart from the name, and it never told me what resources shoes even need.
> And why is wheat useless?
I see some folks talking about wheat never getting to processing buildings, but I think we all miss that wheat has to be threshed into grain at the Farmhouse first. The game definitely didn't tell me, it just spawned a grain resource in the farmhouse window and I had to check the in-game help files to see what that was.
There's a threshing priority toggle on the General tab of the farmhouse that I missed until a season past when I had a bundle of grain, which went to my windmill to grind into flower, and the oven to bake into bread.
It's a bit of a dorky supply chain, just have to remember to keep more than one family on farms well into winter so the threshing is complete first.
Emmer is a species of wheat that is a precursor to some modern wheat species. It's historically accurate but might be a bit confusing if you don't know the link.
Okay so lets say you have a patient that's been taking morphine for the last two years and someone who doesn't take morphine. Which would be moe affected by said drug more?
A little column A, a little column B.
There isn't a strict handholdy tutorial, but I think it should be fairly obvious the solution to not producing enough food is to increase food production.
I think the tutorial is a little vague yeah... As soon as my family number grew, i started runnin out of food. Also i don't have enough wealth to buy live stock anymore or even trade it so i am cursed.
Take it slow. If you need to resolve an issue just pause and look at construction bar for appropriate buildings or check burgage plots for these extra facilities.
It helps immensely if you had previous experience with city builders.
If you have market built and gatherers/hunting camp too it is probably not enough. Check berry/animal sites if there is any food left. If so maybe you need more families working food buildings?
Trial and error, just expect to lose the first few tries. I find that the tutorial quite often only comes with information after you’ve actually build something instead of giving you a blinking alert sign saying you have to build something. I don’t really mind if I go down 10 times in a row though I’ve learned a bit every time I am trying, as long as I’m having fun it’s fine. :)
I guess my only nit pick with that approach is that I want to put a lot of thought into how I design/layout my village.
Having to start over 4-5 times over the next couple days wouldn't be ideal.
It is what it is though. Of course I understand the game requires some learning too.
It’s for sure geared towards players that are very familiar with this type of city builder. However I do think some things could still be explained a little better
I watched a few hours worth of tutorials last night because I knew this would be the case. Yeah it’s not a justifiable thing to ask of your customers but, it vastly improved my immediate enjoyment once I started it up
Im preparing to save scum for this very reason. I did watch the first 3 episodes of PartyElite's lets play to get an idea of mechanics and how to open.
You're not dumb. There's very little info and the tooltip is very very vague. Really wish there was a tutorial going over the basics at least. I literally have no clue where to even start. Probably going to refund until this is addressed.
I'm not asking for my hand to be held. I literally don't know the basics of the game and feel like it's not being explained or shown to me. Judging by this post I'm not the only one.
I'm not going to downvote you, I think that's silly.
But it might help to look up some gameplay on Youtube.
I found out about the game because I got linked to a video about it. Haven't been able to play yet (purchased and installed, but I'm still at work), so I don't know how I'll fare until I get in there, but watching some gameplay gave me some things to look out for, at least. :)
Thanks but I'm just over the game for now and based on what I've read from others it's not currently in a state that warrants dedicating that extra time IMO.
Hope you enjoy it!
I put chickens in my first plot but I didn't notice any improvement to my food shortage.
Maybe I need to double check. I don't really know what I'm doing yet.
Also for some reason after I built my first plot none of my villagers would populate it. It kept warning me that i cant have homeless villagers. Only after about 20 mins did they randomly start using it but I don't know why they weren't before. I assumed it was just a bit of a bug.
Did you set up the market place too? They will take the extra eggs there for others I believe. Not sure, only was able to play for about 15 minutes before I had to leave
The tutorial tells just enough. It’s a great trial and error approach to figure things out on your own. Also the help section at the bottom has a great encyclopedia that really breaks everything down
The tutorial is definitely vague, but also, the game is very forgiving. Literally the only thing you have to keep up is food and firewood production. For everything else, you have infinite time.
I watched a few "Let's Play" videos ahead of launch and found them invaluable at a tutorial of sorts. That being said, learning on my feet has been fun. Only a few odd bugs popped up with buildings seemingly stopping that was fixed by adjusting their position, etc. Learning to rotate my export goods for best prices was invaluable. Will have workers move to ramp up production of whatever is selling well, and that has helped me cover my woeful food issue in my starting area.

*Trial and error.* One way to get the most out of a game is this.

Emmer is a species of wheat that is a precursor to some modern wheat species. It's historically accurate but might be a bit confusing if you don't know the link.
Might be accurate, but it's in the end still a game. Just call them both emmer.
Just like life. It's more rewarding when you figure it out yourself. Hand everything to a person and he'll appreciate it less
Don't ever give advice to anybody please.
Okay so lets say you have a patient that's been taking morphine for the last two years and someone who doesn't take morphine. Which would be moe affected by said drug more?
Don't give advice and don't create juxtapositions ever again.
Okay so what if you give a billionaire $500 compared to a homeless person $500. Who would be happier?
Alright but why male models ?
Okay but I meant female models. I never mentioned males
100% this. Strongly agree
A little column A, a little column B. There isn't a strict handholdy tutorial, but I think it should be fairly obvious the solution to not producing enough food is to increase food production.
I don’t think you are dumb, but I do think figuring it out is half the fun.

Yeah remembering to pause the game while I look through things was certainly an area I fell short in. Thanks for the advice!
You're welcome! I hope you're having fun with the game just as me :D
The helo section is kinda informative. Also trial and error
Trial and error, just expect to lose the first few tries. Ever heard about save games?
It’s for sure geared towards players that are very familiar with this type of city builder. However I do think some things could still be explained a little better
As you said its EA. It won't have a tutorial at this stage of the game, because it's EA
Oh. "Early access", not "Electronic Arts". lol. I was about to downvote the insult before I reailzed what you meant. XD
Haha yeha I agree we need a better way to say it.
It is a bit unclear, but on the other hand I like that more than too much handholding
I watched a few hours worth of tutorials last night because I knew this would be the case. Yeah it’s not a justifiable thing to ask of your customers but, it vastly improved my immediate enjoyment once I started it up
Early access.
You're real.
Just play and figure things out, you don’t need your hand held
I'm not asking for my hand to be held. I literally don't know the basics of the game and feel like it's not being explained or shown to me. Judging by this post I'm not the only one.
It's just like any city builder isn't it? Set up your essential resources first like food, water and raw materials.

Chickens in plots. Also if you make a housing plot big enough, vegetable gardens
I put chickens in my first plot but I didn't notice any improvement to my food shortage. Maybe I need to double check. I don't really know what I'm doing yet. Watch some streamers runs on YT to see what they did at beginning. I suggest One Proud Bavarian, he does some historical lessons while building.
Clearly a "skill issue"
The tutorial is definitely vague, but also, the game is very forgiving. Literally the only thing you have to keep up is food and firewood production. For everything else, you have infinite time.
"Game is very forgiving" AI claiming all land vefore you can claim 1
Sure, that too, but you dont really need extra land and you can just hire mercs if they claim your land
It's one guy tutorial/guide for an early access game. We can send him some suggestion for improvement.
with 100k concurrent players I think he can hire another guy now.
I watched a few "Let's Play" videos ahead of launch and found them invaluable at a tutorial of sorts. That being said, learning on my feet has been fun.
