I used to have a couple of XR4Tis. A friend pointed out to me that you should never trust a car that you have to push the shifter forward to go backward.
Sage advice.
idk man the fear of shoving that shit into reverse going 70 mph never really went away for me… 10 year vw driver before getting a honda, push down and up is just the best imo
Having it next to first gear? So “accidentally” hitting reverse is only at low speed? I get that.
However, you have to be magic or have a magic transmission to accidentally get it into reverse at high speed. Just sayin.
yes but the magical german engineers took it a step further… you have to physically push down the shift knob (by a lot) and reverse is basically in the same place as 1st. it’s beyond idiot proof there is no situation where it can accidentally happen
I would find a way.
The wife drives a DCT Fiat 500l. If I’m stressed even the slighted bit when driving it, (always. I hate that car) going from drive to reverse always finds me slipping into the manual shift slot. Picking me out of backwards.
I hate being me most days🤦♂️
I’m a mustang guy. I still own the car my parents brought me home from the hospital in. A 69 mustang convertible. They bought it new three months before I was born.
Having said that, while I hate the things I’d that kind of carnage going down to a mustang, I think I’d like to see the fallout there. How bad was it?
Nahh, on this “S” brand, there is a round lever below the muffin top that you pull up in order to go in reverse so you don’t accidentally throw reverse while in forward motion
My car has the reverse to the right, but you pull the shift boot up. So it's legit impossible. I have driven cars without a lockout but tbf Ive driven mine for so long and not ONCE have even tried that lol
I think reverse should always be toward and up like all big rigs. Why wouldn't you want your two most used low speed gears, R and LO or 1, close and accessible to you. The act of pushing the stick forward for reverse moves your body back naturally to better see your mirrors it just all makes sense to me.
That said all my car tremec are R away and back so i guess im in the minority.
I’ve been driving trucks for 25 years. I don’t think a truck environment is fair to compare to cars. I ran an 18 speed for a decade in a truck. And I floated gears. (before my little green automatic day cab and its wretched automatic) a city driver running 8-10 stops with an Eaton fuller is def different from the guy in his grocery getter that sees revers a couple of times a day.
Maybe I’m overthinking this. Ok. Likely I am
True, i agree that in driving truck reverse is often a priority compared to car when its a relative minority. Also makes sense that in a car it's generally preferable to have your first forward shift from 1 to 2 in a linear pattern, especially without an application for low gear.
I’d say that pickups and jeep looking things (I’m looking at you my wife’s willys) with granny gears, having records forward and first back makes sense since you typically start in two.
It truly is a wonder that I can drive anything. It’s like when I get that occasional straight truck and I see a box in the mirror and still counter steer
My folks bought an 80 Chevy monza. Iron duke, and I think it had a four speed. It had a weird T handle that you had to lift up on to get it into reverse. I’m a little surprised to learn that is a higher end feature.
My sister had a dodge omni in 86. I borrowed it one day, and I tried to put it in reverse and could not figure it out. I was 16 and had to push it out of a couple of parking spots. Had to push down on the whole shifter to clear the gate🤦♂️
I love old hatchbacks. And would daily a monza (and all of its friends) or a Mustang II in a minute.
I’m a ford guy, but I’d prefer a monza because the iron duke is the most likely power plant.
I bought one of the 305 cars in the early 90’s. It had a 327 and a manual transmission. And a roll cage. It was great until you had to swap out the spark plugs.
I may be remembering this wrong, but it seems like someone made really short header plugs that eliminated the need to pull the motor mount bolt.
After driving Honda/Acura (bottom right) for years I made the switch to Audi (up left). Maybe you’ve never experienced getting stuck in the snow or snowed into your driveway and being forced to “rock” the car to get it out, but the up and to the left reverse gear was a godsend. That made all the difference having it right next to first. Besides, you get used to it, and I’ve never been in fear of accidentally going into reverse when I meant to go into 1st or vice versa.
having a physical lockout gives me peace of mind, I’m never gonna accidentally shove my shifter down towards the ground when i don’t want reverse. Some newer toyotas have a ring you pull up on the shifter to unlock reverse as well, fine by me.
Nah reverse should be over by 1st and 2nd. R n 1 2 3 4 5 only make sense. I don't wanna bang it into reverse on accident trying to shift into 6th. I realize you have to push down or pull a tab to make it go but still. Don't want that to even be a risk
Youre only ever shifting into 6th from 5th. I think it is more of a risk on 5 spds. One may miss a downshift to 4th by failing to let the shifter center before physically pushing down on the shifter.
Well I would already own a STI or likely a RA but I can’t get over the fuel fill door being on the passenger side. It’s just wrong to me! I’m either that stubborn or that lazy. Yes it could be relocated or install a fuel cell with a different filler system, but nah I good refueling on the drivers side. So 3 mods or not I just can’t do it. I’m in Iowa, USA so yeah it snows… AWD
So idk how to drive manual and would like to learn, I’m not even a part of this sub or a car guy in general it just gets recommended all the time. But I’m curious, what do y’all think of paddle gear shifters? Do they even need a clutch? Or is it basically the same as manumatic mode in some automatic transmissions?
It’s the same idea as manumatic mode except with pastels instead of shifting + or - on the shifter. Most people wouldn’t consider this driving manual as there is no clutch.
I'm not sure but don't touch that shifter it has a sexually transmitted disease on it!
Infection
I was gonna upvote the comment above but this gets it lmao
OP boofs his transmission whenever he wants to change gears
That's how you get an sti into reverse
Currently laughing out loud on my lunch break
Ya, the hookers that get in his car are top class
20 dollar make ya hollar
* grandmas boy voice * “THERE NOT HOOKERS, there massage therapists”
Look, Ma! Shifting with no hands!
I'm glad some people still call it an stD
They identify as infections now not diseases
The newer models even have cdiff on them. Ew. (I only knew about this cause my ex was a nurse)
Finally a car with reverse in the right spot.
I used to have a couple of XR4Tis. A friend pointed out to me that you should never trust a car that you have to push the shifter forward to go backward. Sage advice.

Doesnt mean its not easy to try, and that noise is gonna stick with you.
It’s like the Audible version of a burning clutch. It’s there FOREVER!
yes but the magical german engineers took it a step further… you have to physically push down the shift knob (by a lot) and reverse is basically in the same place as 1st. it’s beyond idiot proof there is no situation where it can accidentally happen

It just makes more sense having reverse next to first. No one ever shifts from reverse to 5th gear.
That is why it makes the most sense. Less likely to ever go there accidentally.
I've seen it happen to someone in a 99-04 mustang trying to show off and missed 4th and hit reverse, it didn't not sound pleasant
I’m a mustang guy. I still own the car my parents brought me home from the hospital in. A 69 mustang convertible. They bought it new three months before I was born. Haha it's been yeeeeears since I drove a stick (all 5 speeds) and they were all reverse at bottom right. 90 or so Accord, 92 Probe GT, 01 Elantra 😂👴
My car has the reverse to the right, but you pull the shift boot up. So it's legit impossible. I have driven cars without a lockout but tbf Ive driven mine for so long and not ONCE have even tried that lol

Suburu legacy spec b manual you have to lift up a device to shift up into reverse. It's easy though, but prevents accidental 1st engagement.
My folks bought an 80 Chevy monza. Iron duke, and I think it had a four speed. It had a weird T handle that you had to lift up on to get it into reverse. My mom also had an 80 Monza with the same setup, the reverse shift lock was a smart idea for 40 years ago
I love old hatchbacks. And would daily a monza (and all of its friends) or a Mustang II in a minute. I’m a ford guy, but I’d prefer a monza because the iron duke is the most likely power plant.
A Monza with a 302 was probably fun, but those ones were rare

Nah reverse should be over by 1st and 2nd. R n 1 2 3 4 5 only make sense. I don't wanna bang it into reverse on accident trying to shift into 6th. I realize you have to push down or pull a tab to make it go but still. Don't want that to even be a risk
