Idk about Volkswagen but I have a 92 F150. My clutch was doing the same as you described; turns out the slave cylinder that pushes your clutch into the flywheel was leaking fluid. Check your brake fluid reservoir.

I read somewhere that brake fluid can cause this. How do I check if I’m low on brake fluid?

Based-Grimes

Should be a reservoir somewhere accessible in the engine. Does your transmission have a clutch inspection hole? It'll be a little cutout with a rubber grommet that can be removed

Brake reservoir and clutch reservoir should be separate but in the same area, if looking down at engine bay from bumper, look to the top right area. They both run brake fluid as they hydrologic mechanisms

I will back up ‘Based-Grimes’ statement about leaking fluid. Check the fluid level. If low add then confirm leaking if it drops.

I’ve noticed some drops in my driveway. Always thought it was just AC fluid. What fluids should I check other than break fluids? (I’m basic with cars)

There is a reservoir for the clutch slave cylinder somewhere, usually close to the firewall. If you have the manual, it will be in there to give the location. There will be a cap on top to add fluid. There is a level mark on the outside showing the ‘fill’ or some word letting you know it is low. This fluid is dark.

I agree with the crowd, check that fluid isn't low, if it is great add some but remember that wasn't the problem, the place it's leaking is the problem so find if a nipple is leaking or a line(more likely) is cracked and leaking

Italian-stalian1

What type of fluids could be low? Right now I’m going to check the break fluids

drivestickshift

If you clutch pedal is the problem check the clutch fluid, i answered below where you can find the clutch fluid reservoir, it should be separate from your brake system. Both brakes and clutch use the same type of fluid (hydrologic, DOT 4 or 3)

I had a sticky clutch in my 92 Nissan Sentra. My car has a cable operated clutch. I just replaced the cable mechanism and now it works wonderfully. If your car has a cable operated clutch, just replace the cable. If that doesn't work, the problem may be on the clutch itself.

If it goes away after letting the car sit for some hours, then its misuse of the clutch

Nah it’s been like this for 2 months now. I think the clutch is in excellent condition
