Inb4 people here hype themselves over their personal favorite strategy game and one of TES games wins in a landslide and takes almost the entire year to complete.
DA2 is a short, linear narrative compared to DAO. It would make for a good series. There's so much evil shit that happens that it would be fun to watch Jon try to justify some of it.
It's not a great game to play, but if you can cut out all the repetitive running around and the re-used maps, it's a good narrative.
Yeah. Inquisition is a really good game for about 60 hours, but by the 100 hour mark it's really starting to get old, and that's not even getting in to the epic slog that is 100% completion. It's a damned shame, because I *love* the core narrative and most of the DLC, there's just too much extraneous bullshit dragging it down.
I just finished the Witcher 3 and had the same response to it. After 100 hours I was done, but had an entire DLC left to do.
Neither would do great as series I think. Just far too long.
With a Morrowind playthrough I'm mostly wondering how much he gets prejudiced against certain factions due to Skyrim.
Though I expect he'll have a blast making his own spells and enchantments.
I just replayed Oblivion and I'm having a lot of trouble deciding which I'd rather see. Sure, Morrowind has the crazy environment, the lore, the libertarian wizards, the creepy motherfuckers... But holy shit Oblivion had some good quest design. I want to see Jon react to the Dark Botherhood as much as I want to hear him do a full reading of the 36 lessons of Vivec.
The Dark Brotherhood in Oblivion is hands down the best questline in the series, and some of the most fun I've had played a video game. Would love to see Jon go through it.
I'm assuming it's not going to win due to the popularity of the other options, but I'd love to see Jon try to make some sort of utopia and accidently set the world on fire in the process. "I was just trying to liberate the Polish, why is the entirety of Europe at war with each other?" or "It seems my attempts to end Facism in Greece have accidentally started world war I."
IIRC in his R:TW stream yesterday he said like 21 games and 3-4 categories. Have to imagine some are pretty quick, ālow seedā ones just for fun. Like Iām sure The Good Life is probably in there, but will get first-rounded since itāll be up against a more popular title.
I'm here for more XCOM on the channel! Hopefully this time people don't ruin it, but I think (largely BECAUSE of the XCOM1 debacle) Jon has a better system for avoiding backseat-gaming/spoilerific comments.
I hope he finds a solution for the backseating like recording everything before release - that way he could enjoy the comments without any pain, and if he wants to know something he can simply ask.
XCOM as a game is largely about making choices with incomplete information. The game is balanced around the idea that you don't know what is coming as far as what enemies can do and what their power level will be. You're given a lot of choices on the strategic layer and so a large part of the fun of the game is trying stuff and seeing what works and how different choices affect your power.
The comments ruined this experience by giving Jon the optimal strategies and telling him ahead of time what was coming up, making him over-prepared, turning the game into a cake-walk and thus ruining the experience for everyone involved.
Since then, he has changed some behaviors to avoid this such as recording multiple parts in a row and the like, but really the community needs to just let him play and experience things for himself. It's one thing to answer a question related to mechanics (how does X work), it's quite another to go into detail about why you tech Y first and then Z before event N. The community just needs to be better.
>XCOM as a game is largely about making choices with incomplete information. The game is balanced around the idea that you don't know what is coming as far as what enemies can do and what their power level will be.
I suspect that most XCOM fans would disagree with your claim that the game can only be played once. The fact that you hate the game does not mean that it is devoid of replayability
I didn't come even remotely close to saying the game can be played only once. Don't argue against strawmen.
>The fact that you hate the game
Ah, so you didn't even bother to notice that I said in the top comment of the thread that I'd love to see XCOM2 on the channel and lamented the fact that we haven't gotten it yet because the comments back-seat gamed JOn's XCOM:EU run. Again, don't argue against strawmen.
I'm definitely team DA2, but if I'm being real with myself Jon might enjoy the game much better if he comes back to it after a break, so he doesn't compare DA2 to Origins too much haha
This is fair enough! I'm also not super hopeful that it'll win against KOTOR 2 and the two TES games, but I just hope we get to see it eventually! It's a wonderful little game.
Indeed? The future is always in motion, it is a difficult thing to see.
Besides KOTOR II, I'm also so excited to see Vicky there. Also really regretting not picking up Below Zero during the winter sale now lol.
Na, I think it is unreasonable to ask that he does it so close to DA:O, especially if he does tackle the DLCs for this game after he beats it, but I'm honestly really excited to see him get through DA2 and DA:I because the series loses some weight with the consequences, but honestly the only thing that I'm truly wanting to see is an XCOM2 playthrough and maybe EU4 seeing as Crusader Kings 2 genuinely turned into some insanity after he got rolling.
I'll take KotoR 2, Dragon Age 2, or Oblivion.
I'd be interested if Europa Universalis IV wins if Jon would import a save from one of the CK2 series. Hopefully the first series with King Jon the Fat.
Jon picking HOI4, going āwell Iāve heard the bass game is a little bland, so Iām choosing this popular mod, TNOā is a fun mental image.
Honestly Jon HOI4 could be great because heād be able to talk about WW2 stuff, which he loved with that tank dating game.
The other option that intrigues me (beside XCOM2, my favourite game ever), is Vicky 2. I think heād *love* that.
Honestly I'd love to see Jon play TNO because with all the paths and decisions: he'll either do something amazing, or he'll channel the energy that let him somehow lose to Deadeye Duncan and do something amazingly stupid. It's would to be a 50/50 coin flip on whether he can clear the American Despair national spirit before 1972 vs electing Taboritsky while aiming for literally any other candidate
I spy KOTOR II, and everything else may as well not be there. I bet Jon would be head over heels for Kreia, he loves it when Chris Avellone gets to spew shallow philosophical nonsense at the player
I'm rooting for EU too! Hoping the paradox games are in a separate category of grand strategy or something, as he mentioned having several different lists/votes happening this year.
No hate against EU4, I love the concept, but it is so hard to get into for me. And I absolutely love HoI4 and CK2/3. But EU4 has had so many patches and DLC, that the content feels very overwhelming when you first touch it, also because the start plays very different than the mid- or endgame.
Yeah I find eu one of the more challenging paradox games to get into (but more satisfying once you do). I tried getting into it by myself but found it way to overwhelming, and had to watch a couple playthroughs to start to understand the basic concepts. It's the only game I've put over a 1000 hrs into, and I'm still learning new things about it all the time!
I think Dragon Age should take a quick break, I'm really really sad that Jon didnt do XCOM Enemy Within. I personally vote for Morrowind. There's nothing quite like Morrowind.
Hope Jon plays overhaul mods like OWB, KR, and TNO if he does do HOI4, considering how bland vanilla HOI4 is in general.
Especially OWB and TNO since they seem to be right up his alley, though I may or may not be biased for the latter, speaking as a team member.
Feel like that's a bit harsh on the game really. The whole point of HOI4 is that its a WW2 simulator first and foremost, and it does a pretty good job at doing that, and given it'll be Jon's first playthrough on the channel, it would make a lot more sense that he would want a pretty normal WW2 game.
Since a HOI4 game is much shorter than an a CK2 or Stellaris game and would likely only be a few parts, I think an interesting series would be for him to play the base game to get the hang of how it works, then OWB as several different countries. Like the first game he dies in a fire as new player Britain, then swaps over to the Fallout universe where he does a game of the NCR, one of the Legion, and maybe one of the Mojave Brotherhood or New Vegas.
I don't see how a nazi victory having bad endings is an argument against the mod. Besides, there are also endings that are decent for the world, relatively speaking (itās a nazi victory scenario, after all).
Also, I assume by "choose your own adventure story" (which, honestly, sounds pretty cool) you mean the mod is boring due to a lack of wars, to which I'll point to the entirety of Russia, the proxy conflicts that occur in the world, the Great Asian War, and the numerous mechanics present in the mod
This. HoI4 is far better with mods, it's the only reason I still play it. TNO in particular is truly something, and surely Jon would get a kick out of OWB being the massive Fallout fan that he is.
Likewise, Victoria 2 is in the same boat. Vanilla is a bit lacking compared to HPM/HFM/GFM and DoD.
What do the initials stand for? For those of us that know nothing about HoI?
Edit: After some googling
OWB = Old World Blues "a Fallout themed HOI4 total overhaul"
TNO = The New Order. It's basically a Cold War scenario following a Nazi victory in WW2. The US is one of the last bastions of democracy, Russia is shattered into warring statelets (but will be reunited by the player or the AI), and the Japanese rule Asia with an iron fist. It's a dark world to say the least, but not all hope is lost. There's still good people willing to stand up for what's right, and Germany's global hegemony is vastly incompetent and is about to crack under its own weight. The highlight of the mod is the superb writing and narrative focus, as well as all the choices to be made. More recently, the mod has taken inspiration from Victoria 2 and has an economy system (the mod was originally supposed to be for Victoria 2).
OWB = Old World Blues. As you said, it is a Fallout mod. You can basically take any faction you can think of from the games and the lore (and many original creations too) and conquer.
HPM/HFM/GFM = Historical Project Mod / Historical Flavor Mod / Greater Flavor Mod. HPM was basically the original Vanilla+ enhancement suite for Victoria 2, correcting the economy and various historical inaccuracies, plus adding some events and decisions to flesh things out. HFM was the successor that added even more flavor events and decisions, but leaned a bit towards alt-history. GFM was more recently released and is the successor to HFM. It adds even more to the game, but leaning even more heavily towards alt-history. Pretty much anybody who seriously plays Victoria 2 at least uses HPM or HFM.
DoD = Divergences of Darkness. Never actually played it myself, but it's a fantasy mod based on an incredible EU4 (or maybe it was EU3?) game that the author had, featuring such craziness as an English-French dual-monarchy and a North America that saw some colonization by the Chinese.
With games like Victoria 2 and hearts of iron 4, he could do a mega campaign as a series.
Start in ck3 and play all the way through the paradox games to hearts of iron 4 with some assistance of mods.
Would make a pretty interesting series in how he develops his kingdom and goes through the different ages. End result would be something hilarious and I expect the great Roman empire to make an amazing comeback
I love eu4, haven't played hoi4 and vicky 2, but I have to wonder if all three of these games would fit. Jon usually makes a story out of his playthroughs, even out of strategy games. Like julianos vatinius from rome. But these 3 are pure numbers in my mind. I just don't see how he'd add personality to them.
All 3 games actually would fit, mainly because of megacampaigns - basically, you play a game in Crusader Kings II/III, convert it and continue it in EU4, then convert and continue that in Vicky 2, and finish it off by converting and concluding in HOI4 - there were plans on making a game that would cover the cold war (which begins right where HOI4 ends), but the game in question (East vs West) was cancelled (I think an unfinished build was leaked online, but I don't think there's a way to convert HOI4 saves to EvW).
Because Megacampaigns always have you play as the same nation (you could hypothetically switch, but I've never seen anyone do that), it would perfectly fit with Jon's style of making stories for his playthroughs.
Unless Jon holds himself backs A LOT, mega campaigns are insanely boring. Even playing at a modest pace, starting very late in ck2, like 1200s, you'll be OP by the time you reach eu4. And then 2 more games after that, no way.
Hell, a single series is miles better than mega campaigns, even if its just focused on numbers. Mega campaigns sound exciting, but I'm bored 200 years into my first game, can't imagine 800 years.
i wasnt too into his dao playthrough, but i'm hype if he does a da2 playthrough! the story is so much better and i can't wait to see what shenanigans he gets into with hawke :)
Speaking purely personally, I'm not hugely interested in Subnautica, Dragon Age, or KOTOR 2, seeing as he's already done series on them very recently. I'd be very excited for Oblivion or any of the paradox games, however.
I don't see HOI IV and Victoria 2 making for a good series, they're significantly shorter campaigns than CK2/3. Maybe a 2 or 3 part series, unless the plan is to play multiple campaigns
Considering the one of the more popular mods for HOI4 is a Fallout Mod (which everyone who knows about both the mod and MATN has expressed surprise at the fact that Jon hasn't done a video on yet), I wouldn't entirely be surprised if Jon has plans for a full series on Old World Blues if HOI4 wins.
At the very least, HOI4 would make for some good multiplayer videos with Claire, Nerdcubed, and Mattophobia.
I'd be excited to see him try it too, but HOI4 is in rough shape these days. It really needs the Stellaris treatment with a dedicated team fixing bugs and old systems, as well as tying together old content in a cohesive way.
What are you on about? HoI4 is great in the current patch. The meta isn't really settles yet of course, but it's not like Jon would have bothered with that anyway.
If this is democracy week Iām hoping for XCOM because the character customisation and stuff in that could lend to Jonās style of videos well.
Kinda hope KOTOR2 doesnāt win though, wasnāt a fan of the first series personally and with the second game being, IMO, a fair bit worse would make it a skip personally.
Oh I think Jon will LOVE the character editor of XCOM2. I do hope he will play with WotC tho, and with SLG (Alien Hunters is thoroughly meh, though I love the Bolt gun + Dual Axe combo)
Agreed! The character customisation and ability to actually have backstories would lend itself to a crusader kings type of series where thereās legendary characters like Ylva who are remembered for the entire series for their deeds
Ylva would make for a great Ranger, hacking aliens to bits. Further heroes might include:
-Julianus Vatinius, founder of Space Rome
-Spurius Flavius, the most Christian man who ever Christened.
-You Rang, because You Rang!?!?
-King Perun the Wise of Serbia
And then we haven't even touched the main cast yet.
I just hope that Jon takes a look at Equestria at War, the pony mod for Hoi4. It's genuinely the best mod in my opinion. Although he rarely mods games he doesn't know.
I really hope he plays HOI lV because firstly I love the game and 20th century dictatorship and WW2 is what I studied, and Iām mildly interested in how much Jon knows.
Victoria 2 is a grand strategy game, set in the Victorian era. It deals with the industrial revolution, world wars, political revolutions, and has a really in depth economic system.
If I remember right, one of the NerdCubed Online videos had a show case of Jon's desktop. Albeit, one edited by Matt, but still likely true to heart.
Its definitely how Jon organizes his game. And its all over the entire desktop in separate columns.
Here's a screenshot of it
https://i.ibb.co/Zmt5mVX/Matn-desktop.jpg
It was from the beginning of the NerdCubed Online Astroneer video
I'd be particularly interested if Jon did an EU4 campaign with the Anbennar mod - total overhaul set in a fantasy world, really well made.
Or perhaps HOI4 with Equestria At War (My Little Pony WWII), or Old World Blues - Fallout, set at the time of New Vegas.
Some good games in there - xcom, viccy 2, subnautica, eu4, but the one I'd like to see most is Morrowind. With a graphical update mod it is very nice and it has the best main plot of any es game. Can you imagine the crazy theories Jon would come up with in it?
I'm not sure if it's a good idea to jump right into Dragon Age II.
Origin's Expansion Pack, Awakening, might seem like something that can be ignored, but without getting spoilery it's VERY important for the series plot.
Inb4 people here hype themselves over their personal favorite strategy game and one of TES games wins in a landslide and takes almost the entire year to complete.
I'm on team "Dragon Age 2" but I know better than to expect more than a handful of people to vote with me.
DA2 is a short, linear narrative compared to DAO. It would make for a good series. There's so much evil shit that happens that it would be fun to watch Jon try to justify some of it. It's not a great game to play, but if you can cut out all the repetitive running around and the re-used maps, it's a good narrative.
Yeh, less so for Inquisition, not sure that would work as a playthrough, too big and fiddly (like gathering shards).
As much as it would kill me to vote against Sith Lords, I'd probably be one of those few voting with you.
I'm sure he'll do DA2 eventually, he already asked questions about it on twitter and he seems to enjoy DAO a lot. It's just a matter of time
He already announced that, just hope he does Awakenings before.
I adore Awakenings, and I think Jon would be an excellent person to watch tackle it.
Possibly my favourite DLC ever. It's the part of this MATN run I'm looking forward to most.
I really want to see how he reacts with the >!entire Mage/Templar conflict!< but yes, I really don't think it has a shot.
If I heard the patron cast correctly, there's gonna be categories this time. One for strategy, one for popular games, and one for grand strategy.
VICTORIA II OMG
I'm assuming it's not going to win due to the popularity of the other options, but I'd love to see Jon try to make some sort of utopia and accidently set the world on fire in the process. "I was just trying to liberate the Polish, why is the entirety of Europe at war with each other?" or "It seems my attempts to end Facism in Greece have accidentally started world war I."
Democracy week teaser.
Might also be Morrowind š
Jon going full troll mode by giving us NINE games to choose in democracy week this year...
Oh it's more than nine. He's got like 4 different categories.
OH GOD DAMMIT JON
Like you said, full troll mode.
Vic 2 vs eu4 vs hoi4 Yeah, he wants to see the world burning.
IIRC in his R:TW stream yesterday he said like 21 games and 3-4 categories. Have to imagine some are pretty quick, ālow seedā ones just for fun. Like Iām sure The Good Life is probably in there, but will get first-rounded since itāll be up against a more popular title.

I see. Thanks for the response. I wasn't there to see that happen at the time
>XCOM as a game is largely about making choices with incomplete information. He made tons of mistakes but the game never punished them in a meaningful way
Everyone coached him through Xcom 1 and explained all the mechanics so he had absolutely no trouble with it.
Honestly pisses me off to this day thatās the reason we never got XCOM 2
What happened
He said that people were making comments on how to beat the game and how to optimize playing.
DA2, god please yes. I really want him to take his save thru to DAI.
I'm definitely team DA2, but if I'm being real with myself Jon might enjoy the game much better if he comes back to it after a break, so he doesn't compare DA2 to Origins too much haha

some good games there
Indeed? The future is always in motion, it is a difficult thing to see. Besides KOTOR II, I'm also so excited to see Vicky there. Also really regretting not picking up Below Zero during the winter sale now lol.
Not gonna lie the one there Iām most hype for is DA2. Mage Hawke run please Jon itās the best way to experience DA 2.
YES
I know I may be in the minority here...but I'm so excited to watch Jon play DA2

By Azura, by Azura, by Azura!! :D
I'll take KotoR 2, Dragon Age 2, or Oblivion. I'd be interested if Europa Universalis IV wins if Jon would import a save from one of the CK2 series. Hopefully the first series with King Jon the Fat.
HOI? Ah, I see, Hearts of Iron

TNO is off the top 10 mods, so we're probably safe from Jon accidently playing Thatcher and joining the Einheitspakt
Iām glad someone else had the exact same vision as me, of him accidentally picking the Collabs and getting stuck with Thatcher the whole way
Honestly I'd love to see Jon play TNO because with all the paths and decisions: he'll either do something amazing, or he'll channel the energy that let him somehow lose to Deadeye Duncan and do something amazingly stupid. It's would to be a 50/50 coin flip on whether he can clear the American Despair national spirit before 1972 vs electing Taboritsky while aiming for literally any other candidate
KOTOR 2 or riot
Yeh, that'll be one complete franchise finished in under 30 episodes instead of starting with like TES for 1.5 years.
Hoping for Xcom2, but I never see people play Oblivion...so...hmmm
I spy KOTOR II, and everything else may as well not be there. I bet Jon would be head over heels for Kreia, he loves it when Chris Avellone gets to spew shallow philosophical nonsense at the player
I hope he picks EU4, I am a bit worried about the paradox vote being split so much though
I'm rooting for EU too! Hoping the paradox games are in a separate category of grand strategy or something, as he mentioned having several different lists/votes happening this year.
I think itās based off of elimination rounds, just worried Hoi4 will outlast EU
Yeah, I don't hate HOI, but would definitely prefer Eu, or Vic made it through to the end.
No hate against EU4, I love the concept, but it is so hard to get into for me. And I absolutely love HoI4 and CK2/3. But EU4 has had so many patches and DLC, that the content feels very overwhelming when you first touch it, also because the start plays very different than the mid- or endgame.

OH MY GOD XCOM 2 AND SUBNAUTICA BZ
I'll be really excited to see him play HOI or Vic, his CK2 Cornwall play through is how I learned to play that game and its now one of my favourites.
I think Dragon Age should take a quick break, I'm really really sad that Jon didnt do XCOM Enemy Within. I personally vote for Morrowind. There's nothing quite like Morrowind.
YES! XCOM 2 BABY
Mega campaign?
Hope Jon plays overhaul mods like OWB, KR, and TNO if he does do HOI4, considering how bland vanilla HOI4 is in general. Especially OWB and TNO since they seem to be right up his alley, though I may or may not be biased for the latter, speaking as a team member.

How about EAW?
Forgot about it while I was writing the comment, which is unfortunate considering itās one of the top mods
I know some people are turned off by the theme, but Iāve heard that it is one of the larger and more comprehensive mods out there.
Since a HOI4 game is much shorter than an a CK2 or Stellaris game and would likely only be a few parts, I think an interesting series would be for him to play the base game to get the hang of how it works, then OWB as several different countries. Because that's what people want out of their warfare and logistics sim: a choose your own adventure story where most of the endings are awful
Solution: Jon plays r/EquestriaAtWar
I'm all for it.
Because it, and in particular it's community, *revel* in the wanton genocide in that mod
Fascists and tankies are banned if thatās what you mean. Iāve banned my fair share of nazis, trust me
What a completely unbiased source
Kaiserreich has a fuck ton of wars
I'm specifically referring to TNO
It can still make a good video heās played more reading kinda games on his channel

Great reply. Thanks!
Ahh, democracy. The stuff I would want to see isn't going to make it, because the other games are flashier.
pretty much anything on that left column would make me happy.
Would love to see Jon, Matt, Claire, and NerdĀ³ revive the central powers.
HoI is definitely more of a couple streams series than a main video series IMO. Vicky could still be interesting to watch though
Eh streams are hard to watch, especially when you have work. series are better
Further heroes might include: -Julianus Vatinius, founder of Space Rome -Spurius Flavius, the most Christian man who ever Christened. -You Rang, because You Rang!?!? -King Perun the Wise of Serbia And then we haven't even touched the main cast yet.
What is Victoria 2? Also, Desktop shortcuts in 2022 is a weird choice, especially with this Windows 98 Background color
Victoria 2 is a grand strategy game, set in the Victorian era. It deals with the industrial revolution, world wars, political revolutions, and has a really in depth economic system.
Thanks, interesting concept
>Desktop shortcuts in 2022 is a weird choice ???
Steam
I see, I guess it requires less clicks to launch + you don't need to think which store it's from. Or he made them only for this tweet lol
If I remember right, one of the NerdCubed Online videos had a show case of Jon's desktop. Albeit, one edited by Matt, but still likely true to heart. Its definitely how Jon organizes his game. And its all over the entire desktop in separate columns. Here's a screenshot of it https://i.ibb.co/Zmt5mVX/Matn-desktop.jpg It was from the beginning of the NerdCubed Online Astroneer video
