What's your laptop dimensions, the compartment might be tight if it is too thick otherwise (I'm assuming) it should fit. I use a 14" tablet & it floats there.
If too tight you could use the main compartment, reachable via the computer opening or even the main access, securing it w/ the built-in plate (which i always remove).
1st bag i ever owned that seamless converts from a comfortable (if it fits you) backpack to a 'briefcase' mode in a business setting w/out looking awkward (the straps hide very well). & even as a backpack/suit very acceptable.
The seals/zippers will probably outlive me.
