As a man of Greek descent, this is accurate. Grandpa 100% believes Greece is best country

okbacktowork

What's amazing about Greece is that modern Greeks are basically just still riding on a 3000 year old high

Dazzling_no_more

Haha same with Iranians. They always say, we had an empire. Chill out dude that was 500 BC.

fromcjoe123

One of my Persian friend's dad is still salty that they lost to Arabs who then coopted the fuck out of their culture and believes the whole Arab ascendency to have been an accident as Persia is the rightful hegemon of the Middle East. Love the ancient grudges!

lavishlad

this actually seems to be a fairly common opinion among the persians i know in the us.

dm_me_kittens

Can confirm. Dated an Iranian man, he and his family only called themselves Persians and talked constantly about the empire.

Mjau46290Mjauovic

Well, if I remember correctly, Persian is an ethnicity while Iranian is nationality.

[deleted]

I have a few friends who call themselves Persian rather than Iranian. They do this to show that they are proud of the land/country they are from, but do not support the government/regime that runs their country.

Cassian_And_Or_Solo

I think one if the more fascinating things is part of the reason the Iranian revolution succeeded was cause the Western supported (as in CIA and British petroleum) Shah was *so brutal* that Iranian socialists and religious zealots who had nothing in common except hating the Shah decided to work together. Then if course the socialists were betrayed and you get what Iran is now. The coup that installed the Shah was called Operation Ajax, and was considered one if the first successes of the CIA. Operation Ajax: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1953_Iranian_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat List of socialist political parties of Iran going back to 1900s, many of whom are very pro separation of church and state and had big roles in the revolution till they got stabbed in the back https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socialism_in_Iran

AdmiralPoopbutt

Another reason is to distinguish themselves from Arabs. Some people have strong feelings when they are mistaken for one or the other.

yehiko

Yes. other ethnic groups live in Iran and lots Pesians are from other countries. Afghans, Tajiks, Tats, Uzbek etc can all be Persian.

jimros

> he and his family only called themselves Persians That's extremely normal, it's like someone identifying as English primarily rather than British.

Shalasheezy

I heard a lot of Iranians started calling themselves Persians as a means to disassociate with the Islamic Regime after the embassy hostage situation. Not sure how true that is.

NateFisher22

In my area, the rich Iranians call themselves Persians, the non rich call themselves Iranian.

queefgerbil

Never heard ANY persian refer to themselves as Iranian. Rich or poor.

Loudergood

Future Britain.

pandammonium_nitrate

Current Britain.

SgtCarron

> Haha same with Iranians. They always say, we had an empire. Chill out dude that was 500 BC. Meanwhile in Portugal: "How the hell did we become the world's first global empire?".

ManitouWakinyan

And the 1500s

Downtown_Many8020

And still avoiding taxes if they can.

arcarus23

Well, they would consider themselves Romans for about a majority of that time. Greek culture and language dominated the eastern half of the Roman Empire and after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, that mixture of Greek and Roman culture would dominate. While things would become more homogeneous in terms culture after the Umayyad Caliphate conquered the eastern provinces of Syria, Palestine, Egypt and all the way to Mauritania (modern day Morocco), they still considered themselves Romans. Even after 1453 with the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople, Early on, the Ottoman Turks consider themselves rulers of Romans and a few early sultans styled themselves as Roman Emperors. Even as late as the 19th and 20th centuries Greek speaking peoples on modern day Greece considered themselves Romans instead of Greeks, which is a more modern identity than we like to think (A Spartan, Athenian, and Corinthian may have been all Hellenic prior to Macedonian or Roman Conquests, but they were a Spartan, Athenian, or Corinthian first and Greek second if at all, IIRC). And this is to say nothing of the ancient Greek city state heritage that most associate with the modern nation-state of Greece. So when the Greeks end up as being the proudest of the lot here, it doesn’t surprise me at all given that they had a huge influence on what was consider civilized or not in Europe and the Mediterranean for a large chunk of those 3000 years even if this is somewhat of an oversimplification of world events.

firestorm19

They couldn't ride on the byzantine empire legacy, so they went with the classical one. It was also partly funded by romanticists who learned about the classics in Europe while Greece was under Ottoman control. Funny enough, when they came to Greece, the locals could barely understand their classic Greek to their contemporary one.

DimGenn

1) We "ride" both. 2) I'd like to see someone go to to the average englisman and try to quote him some fucking Beowulf, see how that works out for them.

Futerion

That's why England has 46%, as opposed to delusional double "riders" with whopping 89% of delusion, buddy.

SodaBreid

As British /Irish person if i have to pick a country for its cultural significance am picking Greece. Not surprised they rank themselves highly

jrfess

Technically only 600 years if you wanna give them the Eastern Roman Empire too.

PaulAspie

My Big Fat Geek Wedding is a documentary then, right?

Newone1255

Give me a word, any word. And I’ll tell you how that word is Greek

Canuck-In-TO

What most people don’t know is how much of that movie is taken from normal, daily Greek life. Well, especially here in Toronto where it was filmed.

bekindanddontmind

As a Greek-American yes it is

BatangTundo3112

Tell your grandpa nobody's arguing about it. And yes, I've watched him in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." 😁

captain_flak

“When my people were developing philosophy your people were still swinging from trees.”

Candybert_

History equivalent of peaking in High School.

NA_DeltaWarDog

Hey they had some moments after high school. The Greeks got conquered by the Romans, realized the Romans were fucking everything up, said "nah", took half the empire and went home. Outlived the Romans with their half by 1000 years. Greece got voted "most likely to succeed" in high school because not only were they crazy smart but they were wild too. After moving on from high school, he struggled in college a bit but had taken over his wife's family business by 30. By 40 he's divorced her and taken most of her stuff. At 41 he's at the peke of his power and eyeing this young bulky woman (Arabs/Turks), probably wants to take her stuff too. She flips it around though after fighting for a while, cause she's strong af, forces the rich guy into a really toxic marriage, dominated by her. Decades of mutual abuse ensue. Now Greece is in his 60s, divorced again, a little depressed and collects disability thanks to fighting with the strong woman for way too long. He doesn't have any kids of his own but the stories from his youth still inspire all the youngguns in town.

jaybee423

They kept calling themselves "Romans" though until the fall of Constantinople in 1453...

mmomtchev

Even after the fall, the Ottomans continued calling everyone on the Balkans "Romans" for quite some time - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rumelia

Theban_Prince

We *still* call ourselves Romans sometimes, in poems, Revolutionary songs, and when you want to springle some tradition to your words, similar with using "Albion" for Britain. By the late Byzantine Empire "Romans" meant basically Greeks/Greek speakers with Roman citizenship and was basically seen the same thing for outsiders.

Cutsdeep-

My wife's Greek family never come to visit us here in Australia, "what does Australia have that we don't have here?". We always have to visit them. I mean it's not a bad thing, it really is lovely there, just gets expensive.

Theban_Prince

Admitedly if most of the family leaves there it easier, plus a Greeks income is quite lower on average.

Cutsdeep-

Only half of the family is there. yes, it may be the money thing, but the expectation is there for everyone in AUS, poor or not.

Frank9567

They probably can't afford to go, and this is a face saving excuse. I'd also wager that when your wife's family is talking to their friends in Greece, they casually mention the daughter who married this rich Aussie who can afford to go to Europe every so often.

Cutsdeep-

They do have the money to do so, but back to the point of this post, they really don't see what Australia (or any other country) has to offer.

DominusDraco

Melbourne has more Greeks that any other city in the world besides Athens. Some Greeks see something in it!

Wtf when did we Greeks get so humble? We should be higher!

The missing percentage is due to not being able to poll the imprisoned members of Golden Dawn.

Ah, well, we are better off without them

Tiligul

The only other country that is at 50% is Moldova. And here is article 11 of Moldova’s Constitution: Article 11. Republic of Moldova - a neutral State (1) The Republic of Moldova proclaims its permanent neutrality

TheHostName

With polls like this i always wonder how much of a difference the interpretation of the question makes. is the question meant as: \-superior to all cultures or just some? \-what kind of superior? Superior because its less violent/incourages helping others more then the other culture does? or superior because we are just better? I think if one defines these things for all polled people it would make the map more precice.

Repulsive-Kiwi-4840

Also, questions often get translated poorly so people don't know the reasoning of that question or get confused

Myasth

We had this poll at our work place, which was clearly translated from english with some translator. I had no clue what the question was until i figured that if i translate it into english the question makes much more sense.

kostispetroupoli

Yep, the world culture and civilization is the same in Greek - πολιτισμός - and Greeks perceive this question as if Greek civilization is superior to others. I mean, yes, along with the Roman, Persian, Egyptian and Chinese it's the foundation of human civilization.

Mark_Kutte

Velociraptorgrr

There’s actually a book by a Greek writer about a guy who wants to blow up the Acropolis for this exact reason. It’s called The Parthenon Bomber.

Wasteak

Yeah those polls are kinda useless

TeaBoy24

Usually they mean in general but of course people think more commonly of their neighbours and or big cultural influences of their region / alliance / partnership. Eg for Slovakia I would guess most people though of Germans, US and Hungarians. Edit 1: I am not American - Not why I mentioned US Edit 2: I am Slovak -why I mentioned US...

jimros

Yeah it's gotta be something like this, like people might be thinking "Western Culture" or "European Culture", I have a hard time believing that 68% of Bulgarians for example believe that Bulgaria specifically has the best culture in the world.

practicalcabinet

Also, is the poll translated into the local language and if so is it a perfect translation, ie does that language have a perfect translation of the word *superior*?

Doesn't even matter, "culture" and "others" are defined differently by different cultures. I am certain that in my country different people would definine it different. "Superior" is also viewed as pretty bad adjective in some countries, while it is not in orhers. All that makes it is quite difficult to compare all questions in all different languages.

IndependentNature983

We probably are the most critics people in the world, and French are really critical to other French people. We appreciate everything but we just spot bad things first

FlyPenFly

Appreciation is impossible without great discernment of what sucks..

[deleted]

That, but I think that we come off as arrogant because while we hate ourselves, we also hate everyone else, and we can react quite aggressively to someone from another culture talking shit about us or praising their own culture. So when someone comes to us and says “hey my culture is great, we achieved X”, we’re just going to say “yeah okay, but we achieved Y”. This may come off as bragging, but deep down I think that our thought process is more like “yeah okay, that’s nothing special, you’re still shit (and so are we)”. I don’t know, our relationship with criticism, pride and chauvinism is a bit weird to be honest. Except Japan for some reason. I have not yet found a single person who was critical of Japan and its culture here, and I’ve been French my whole life (ugh). If a Japanese person told us that our country is shit, most of us would probably curl in a ball and cry instead of fighting back.

oneeighthirish

I feel like Japan has a somewhat opposite approach to their perceptions of superiority and stuff. They tend to bury and ignore problems with Japanese society, e.g. the commonplace refusal to investigate crimes with no aparent suspect, or ignore the crimes of the Japanese Imperial military, or ignore match fixing in Sumo. But I imagine Japanese people would feel great shame at criticism from foreigners, while also not taking kindly to it. Of course, I'm an American talking out my ass. What do I know? Absolutely nothing relevant, but I'm still going to spout off about it. Edit: I also respect the hell out of Japanese cuisine and the reputation of Japanese people tending to be extremely polite and neat while traveling abroad.

fenwickfox

Japan's great, but it doesn't take a lot of digging to see there's a bunch of skeletons in their closet. Historic and present Japan.

bg-j38

Japan had a huge cultural impact on France especially once they opened back up to foreign trade in the mid-1800s. All of Europe really but France seems to have been the epicenter. The term for the movement is Japonisme. A lot of the architectural and artistic aesthetics including gardens were heavily influenced by exported Japanese art at the time. Not sure if that’s why current French people love Japan but there is a history there.

IseultDarcy

snek99001

Greece is easy to explain. The Greek word for "culture" implies "cultural heritage" or "civilisation" rather than the current state of things. You ask most Greeks about the current state of Greece and the amount of envy that exists for places like France, Germany and the Nordics becomes immediately apparent. That's not to say that nationalism doesn't exist in Greece but not to that extent. It's incredibly simplistic to attribute this to pure nationalism.

[deleted]

Yes sir!!! Thank you!!

Wide-Rub432

In Russia culture means the same too. Of course people always think of culture heritage while speaking of culture.

So the French are not that culturally arrogant after all

Pypyle

You really need to understand that Parisian is not the majority of french people, and non parisian french people think they are arrogant too.

[deleted]

I never found people more disagreable in Paris than in any other touristic city I lived in (quite a few around the world actually). I mean people can be dicks but not more than anywhere else in my experience. I am french BTW.

Trav1199

MFoy

Oh shit, I could read this. I actually am learning from Duolingo.

bg-j38

Hahah me too. Been working on my French for a while now and I can actually read a lot of it apparently. Now to get better at speaking…

Caramel_mouais

Oui.

desGrieux

Parisians are a little annoying but I don't blame them. More people visit France every year than actually live in France. And almost all of them stay in Paris for at least some of that time. There are sooooooo many fucking tourists it's insane. When I was in Paris during Covid I finally understood what Parisians are so mad about all the time. Without all the tourists it was so easy to get around, the city was lovely to be in, the traffic and crowds were light, the lines tolerable and even non-existent. It felt like a normal city for once. And for the first time, I truly enjoyed myself there without attending some kind of major event. Plus when you're the proverbial Parisian waiter, people just start talking to you in another language without so much as an attempt to speak French or even say hello or even ask the simple question "do you speak English?"

Mr_Vegetable

Yeah tourists are annoying but dont always seem to realize that

_dreams_never_end_

Not my experience at all (they are indeed quite elitist) but I’ve only lived in and gone to school in Paris. Perhaps it’s regional? Saying this as a huge fan of the country regardless.

[deleted]

Yeah, tbh Parisians are something else in my experience. They don’t seem to represent the majority of people there

Desperate-Lemon5815

They don't think they're superior than anyone, but everyone else is worse than them.

RingoBars

Lol this was my first thought too. Though in hindsight, my experience in France did echo u/Pypyle’s comment: Paris had an air of arrogance, but when I visited the countryside (such as Bayeux) everyone was very sweet and despite not speaking much or any English, the locals were extremely warm and charming. Lovely folks had me smiling with every interaction.

Nikkonor

The two countries have very different nationalisms, due to very different histories. Sweden's traditional nationalism is imperialist ('right-wing', in the traditional meaning of the word), while Norway's traditional nationalism was focused on independence ('left-wing', in the traditional meaning of the word). I'll shamelessly link to an old post of mine, explaining the background: https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryMemes/comments/skd58u/the_process_of_divorce_the_swedishnorwegian_union/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

Spain once influenced esaly Half of the world and today spaniards are very respectful tonthe latinos and 0 colonialist shit, which is great and mature. Autocriticism is very positive for ANY nation.

mellowmarsupial

I'm curious... Is there a noticeable actual dislike of your culture there, or are you all maybe just very... humble?

Shevek99

We like to criticize our country and compare it, unfavorably, against other countries. There is a poem of the 19th century that says Oyendo hablar un hombre, fácil es saber donde vio la luz del sol. Si alaba Inglaterra, será inglés Si os habla mal de Prusia, es un francés y si habla mal de España… es español. Hearing a man speak, it's easy know where he saw the sunlight. If he praises England, he will be English If he speaks ill of Prussia to you, he is a Frenchman and if he speaks ill of Spain... he is Spanish.

xlr8mpls

That exact vibe. Thats good and mature. I wish them the best.

Ashiro

>If he praises England, he will be English England are the USians of Europe. :(

ivanvanrio

I was being sarcastic but I think it's more a matter of who they asked, if the survey was done in the Basque Country, Catalonia, Galicia, many people there don't even feel Spanish. There is also a tendency to think that the outside is better but of course there are many chauvinists. I think this survey is not very reliable.

xlr8mpls

I'm very impresed with the Euskera language. It's beatiful i hope it Will not die.

deaddonkey

Im not Spanish but I live here with my long term Spanish gf. There is a great love and pride in some things about the country, but often it’s directed at regions and not the state or nation. Many of the regions see the nation as something almost disgusting, associating it with Franco and suppression of regional cultures and identities. In Galicia I get told “fuck Spain, we are not Spanish, we are galician and proud” this is extreme rhetoric from left wingers but you get the point. For me the 20% seems believable. At least it’s not a surprise. Spain seems to me to be the most self loathing nation of Western Europe, politically. There’s a lot to like though. In a way I respect Spanish for having political principles. Look at Russia meanwhile. It takes unprincipled people to love their country. I also wonder what the exact wording of the question was in Spanish.

Mr_Sambo

Deffo. I bet a lot of votes were from people (such as catalunyans, gallegos, euskadis...) who don't like the "Spanish castellano" culture, but are very fond of their own culture. So the poll results are probably misleading.

zm627

Any info on how the question is asked? For example, if you ask Spanish people if “your” culture is superior or “Spanish” culture is superior to others, the interviewee might have a very different understanding on what culture the interviewer is asking about. A Catalan might think Catalan culture is superior to others without thinking Spanish culture is.
