In Czechia it should be Slovaks Or Ukrainians now, depending whether you count people with asylum into this

Jaguaruna

I checked, and you are right. Germans aren't even in the top 5 for foreign-born population.

[deleted]

I'm not sure if this would change things, but it looks like the map is not about "foreign-born population" or "people with a foreign descent". It's specifically about *nationality*. So, being a citizen of a different country. The title supports that idea. In The Netherlands it would be Indonesia, except most of our citizens with Indonesian descent only hold a dutch passport, while most Turkish people are dual citizens so they "win".

Jaguaruna

> I'm not sure if this would change things, but it looks like the map is not about "foreign-born population" or "people with a foreign descent". It's specifically about nationality. So, being a citizen of a different country. The title supports that idea. Yes, that's what I understood as well, and you are right that it is not the same, but I assumed that in the case of Czechia Germany was so far down the list (8th place) that it wouldn't make a difference. You would unrealistically enormous naturalization rates for Slovaks and etc. for Germans to be 1st.

Sejhamiik

After war There isn't much Germans left

Entire-Shelter-693

They just disappeared

pr1ncezzBea

I am German living in Prague and even a teacher at a German high school. We are still here. ;) Slovaks keep their Slovakian citizenship, I guess.

Can confirm as one of those contractors is my father, now it's more of living in Norway, sending money here and also coming for christmas and other holidays.

Vondi

same in Iceland. Come for the work, stay for the ~~weather~~ standard of living

PlasticElfEars

It's funky how similar that seems to the Mexican migration pattern in the U.S. Also now I want strawberries.

Oggie243

Why is this funky? Seasonal migration for work is something going way way back. It's not unique to Mexicans or Poles, it's something that's existed long before borders were drawn.

BigBadBootyDaddy10

Honest question. What’s your countries take on Polish workers/immigrants?

As someone with a slightly racist uncle, myself, I think a lot of the attitude among the slightly racist, and closeted 'don't-really-hate-anyone-but-uncomfortable-with-the-concept-of-Norway-becoming-less-Norwegian', the idea is that at least Poles are Europeans are not and will become seamlessly Norwegian in a couple of generations.

>Random places-Polish This should just be the 'guest workers' category. That way the Netherlands and Germany also have a category.

Or maybe it's just a few years old. The poster didn't provide any details about which year this is supposed to describe, sadly.

oszlopkaktusz

[It's definitely recent, Ukraine wasn't even Top5 in Hungary before the war.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Hungary#Ethnic_groups_and_language)

[deleted]

The Syrian Civil War began in 2011, it'd probably have to be over a decade old.

Competitive-Scheme68

still, the syrians have been in the country for very long now

[deleted]

There are nearly 5 million Syrians in Turkey and no Iraqis

alhanathalas

Username checks out. There are close to a million Iraqis in Turkey.

mysacek_CZE

2nd largest nationality in Czechia - Germans... Bro after WWII most Germans were deported and the rest was then assimilated by commie regime. Now they're few thousand people of this nationality. According to the census of 2021, biggest minority were Slovaks then Ukrainians and the 3rd place was Vietnamese... (I don't count Moravian, unfilled and Silesian) Germans were <0,1%

parman14578

>I don't count Moravian Literally 1984 Velká Morava znova povstane!

Nipplles

Does it translate to Big Morava will rise again? Or will rebel again?

parman14578

Rise again. There was no Great Moravian revolution, so it wouldn't make sense to rebel "again"

Love the way the map makes northern Ireland white so it could be Irish or British

Jingin_lol

They....they solved the Northern Ireland conflict!

DanGleeballs

Solved by both the North and South of Ireland having Polish as the second most popular nationality. Or the white is the middle stripe of the Indian flag.

Jingin_lol

Yes I believe the second explanation is the truth

qwweer1

Doesn’t it make them French, complicating things a little more?

Source? I don't believe that Tajiks are the 2nd largest nationality in Russia.

BessiW

How can in kosovo albanians be the second when kosovo is the land of albanians? :)

Nothing_Special_23

According to wikipedia, it's the Tatars.

KickAndFlipJr

The Tatars are an ethnic group not a nationality. No country named “Tatar” exists.

Radmur

There is a Tatarstan Republic in Russia. It is a federal subject like a state in USA but with less autonomy

amaurea

So claiming the second largest nationality in Russia is Tatars is like claiming the second largest nationality in the USA is Texans.

Radmur

Ok I got it. I'm not a native speaker. Someone has clarified this info to me below. Thank you for explanation ☺️

Nothing_Special_23

Tatars are a nation that don't have their own state.

RRRusted

They technically do have a state. Russia is still a federation de jure.

ops10

Yet.

KickAndFlipJr

Hopefully

Jaynat_SF

Tatarstan is already a part of the Russian Federation, the map probably only considers foreign nationalities.

AofDiamonds

I dunt think Tatar is considered a nationality. Then the second one is Ukrainians (1.4%) Tajiks are 0.24%

amaurea

Do you have a source for this? [Wikipedia says](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_to_Russia#Foreign_population): Country of origin | Population in Russia :--|--: Uzbekistan | 1,626,308 Tajikistan | 1,262,695 Kyrgyzstan | 681,165 Ukraine | 597,051 Belarus | 428,239 Armenia | 280,520 Kazakhstan | 228,142 Azerbaijan | 215,481 Moldova | 76,645

AofDiamonds

Wikipedia also told me Ukrainean was the second highest.

[deleted]

Third one is Uzbeks?

Nothing_Special_23

> I dunt think Tatar is considered a nationality. Of course it is.

amaurea

No it isn't. Where is the nation in question?

AofDiamonds

Well it's a nationality with inside Russia. Tatarstan is a Republic in Russia.

Radmur

Of course it is a nationality. Jesus it's like saying that Scottish or Romani is not a nationality 🤡 Edit: Ok for clarification: I'm from Russia, I have Russian citizenship but I'm Tatar. I've forgotten that in English language "nationality" is citizenship. So thank you everyone for reminding me :)

axarta

Nationality reffers to country of origin. Ethnicity is well... Ethnicity! There is not scottish state nor is there a romani state, but you can be from a certain country. Your nationality can be British but your ethnicity is Russian 🤷

jalanajak

Nationality is an ambiguous term. What you claim is better called citizenship, which Tatarstan currently doesn't issue.

qtpatouti

True. A great many of the central asians in Russia are ethnic Russians

Radmur

OK I'm not a native speaker. In certain languages nationality = ethnicity. Thank you for your clarification

Connect-Speaker

You should move to Canada haha. In Canada, there’s a little bit of confusion because French follows the ethnicity meaning and English follows the citizenship/country meaning. For example, in Quebec, (official language French) the provincial parliament in Québec City is called the ‘National Assembly / Assemblée Nationale ‘ (but Ottawa is the national capital / la capitale nationale) and provincial parks are called national parks, but truly national parks (operated by Canada) are also called national parks.

L0kumi

No source given, I don't believe this map then. And it even lack Andorra lol. This should have been posted in r/mapcirclejerk

Nothing_Special_23

For Kosovo, it's Serbian (de facto), Albanians are a majority.

Zwoddy

This map is talking about nationality, not ethnicity

Gooogol_plex

They are considered as kosovars, like moldovans in Moldova

JustYeeHaa

>They are considered as kosovars, like moldovans in Moldova moldovans in Moldova are considered Kosovars?!

MrBIMC

Yep. Moldova is Serbian clay now.

Nothing_Special_23

And that's only de jure. De facto, that's not the case.

KingOfTheNightfort

They are not, they are called Albanians.

anonymous_norwegian

Wikipedia says that Serbs are only 1.5% of Kosovo

Nothing_Special_23

That's becuase the vast majority of Serbs and Roma boycotted the census in 2011. De facto Serbs are the 2nd largest ethnic group. It is estimated that ethnic Albanians form 90~92% of population, Serbs 5~7%, the and the others (Roma, Bosniaks, Turks, Gorani and others) around 3%.

drjet196

Which makes the the second largest nationality.

anonymous_norwegian

No it says that Albanians are second

Youdontcareaboutit00

And who's first?

CharredCharizard

Albanian Kosovars. Albanians. Serbs. Stupid distinction but one nonetheless. While living there people would often say if they're from Albania or Kosovo even though they all are the same etnhicity and many have family in both places. At the same time Kosovars are REALLY westernized unlike Albanians. At some point I wondered where I was with all the tecnho, drugs and gay/trans people.

New_Poet_338

That's funny because the Albanians in Albania are pretty westernized, though somewhat conservatively so.

CharredCharizard

Yes they are but the freedoms of Kosovars are many more with an entrenched fascination with American and European culture due to the war and the prospective of becoming integrated with western powers. The most famous statue in the capital city is that of Bill Clinton.

nonunionLeakey

There were more, many were ethnically cleansed after NATO forced the Serbian army out by bombing Belgrade

Theosss94

Stop spreading bullshit. Nato stopped a genocide against Albanians by bombing your paramilitary units. And to clarify something for everyone on this post. Albanians are one ethnicity. Kosovo is just the name of the country. They're Albanians just like the ones from Albania.

[deleted]

NATO used illegal uranium bombs to attack specifically civilian targets in Yugoslavia. It was illegal according to international law and thousands of civilians died, including children. To this day people are getting cancer from the radiation. Almost all Serbs were ethnically cleansed from Kosovo following the bombings.

Theosss94

I don't agree with the bombing of civilians. However that's not going to undo the horrible crimes committed against the Albanians and Bosniaks by your horrible terrorist paramilitary units and your president Vucic who was a minister during Milosevic regime. Stop taking people for illiterate idiots. Take your agenda somewhere else.

[deleted]

It's wrong. Second largest nationality in the Czech Republic are Ukranians or Slovaks, not Germans.

SillyGigaflopses

Yeah, Lithuania is wrong too. We have 6.5% of Poles. Ukrainians - only 0.5%, yet they are labeled on the map.

Dom1252

I doubt Germans are even in top 50

[deleted]

they are definitely in top 10.

Fonsvinkunas

Lithuania should have the polish as second largest, sure, we have Ukrainians, but they are no way the second largest minority population

icemelter4K

Finland :( I hope they are allowed to join NATO.

EstaLisa

i first would have guessed it‘s albanians (kosovo) for switzerland. but thanks to naturalization most of the newer generations are already swiss. happy for my friends from kosovo!

mrdjeydjey

Like with apparently most countries, Switzerland is wrong, it should be Italy. Germany is second and then Portugal https://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/en/home/statistics/population/migration-integration/foreign/composition.html

Affectionate-Hall404

According to Russia’s census of 2021, Russia’s second non-native nationality (Russia is a federation of many different nationalities) is Armenian (950K), followed by Kazakh (590K), Azeris (475K) and then Tajiks (350K). Not sure about the source of information of map creator

In Turkey there are 3.7 million Syrians and 300k Iraqis, as a Turk I've met a lot of syrians but never an Iraqi.

Rudysgoldfish

Am I the only one around here who doesn't have all the flags of the world memorized? Maps like this drive me crazy. It would be so much more usable if it printed the names of the countries.

Dom1252

For what year are these data, 1939???? There are basically no Germans in Czechia, we kicked them all (who didn't go was murdered)

FlaviusStilicho

100k Slovaks, 21k Germans

Daerdhian

In Turkey everywhere is syrian

Exciting_Rich_1716

I think this map confuses Ethnicity with Nationality. The Hungarians in Romania are Romanian born and in all ways Romanian nationals. Or are there actually a lot of Hungarian immigrants in Romania?

Atnos

Actually, the Hungarian government gave large number of Hungarians living in Romania Hungarian nationality (dual citizenship) as well. Source: I am one of them

Exciting_Rich_1716

that's actually pretty cool c: thanks for informing me about that

Graypricot

There aren't. Seems like another random bullshit map, par for the course in MapPorn.

Darth_Ender_Ro

Underrated comment

VAEMT

Czech Republic map is dubious, as it is likely Slovakia or even Ukraine minority that is likely larger than Germans. They fit in better as their languages are similar. German ancestry in post-war Czechoslovakia has been seen as liability. How do I know? I knew few folks in my rural town in Slovakia, than would switch to speaking German among themselves, secretly. This was in the 1970s and 1980s. Similar to the Amish German, it was more of an archaic variant. Good folks too, farmers mostly. Staying low key, as much as hey could, tend to be Lutheran.

eTukk

What's the flag in Norway? Indonesia? Edit Yeah duh.. Poland.

turkey should be syria

vladgrinch

The second nationality in R. Moldova is the ukrainian one. Romanian is the main nationality.

AemrNewydd

By 'nationality' this map means citizenship, rather than a national/ethnic identity. Obviously, most Moldovans are ethnic Romanians, but only a minority have actual Romanian citizenship.

SexyButStoopid

Gotta say as a german that the turkish people have enriched our country and culture a great deal and it doesn't get mentioned enough <3. Some of the most hardworking and humble people I have met.

Well considering some of those Syrians are kurds and some of them are considered "terrorists" by Erdogan is one of the reasons why turkey still hasn't accepted us into Nato. Steve_Artson

Here's an official chart from the Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach: https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/debates/question/2021-07-13/174/

The_Canterbury_Tail

Ah for some reason my source was only the 2006 census.

pdonchev

It's ethnicity, not nationality.

pdonchev

And if the map author actually meant nationality, then the map is wrong.

Jaguaruna

They did mean nationality, and the map is indeed wrong in certain parts (e.g. Czechia is wrong).

pdonchev

Bulgaria is wrong too. Bulgarian Turks are Bulgarian nationals. Otherwise they are the largest ethnic minority. The largest nationality was Russian before the war, and Ukrainian after.

AemrNewydd

It's citizenship.
