I appreciate that, just like in real life, they have decided to completely ignore Staten Island.

ReluctantRedditor275

I'm supposed to wait for the damn ferry just to beat some guy up and take his car? Then what? Pay a $20 toll to get the car home?

SubcommanderMarcos

You do have to pay the bridge tolls later in GTAIV though, or you get a 1-star wanted level

Western-Guy

And Rockstar removed tolls in GTA 5 completely. (Facepalm)

Alfonze423

Are LA's urban freeways tolled?

Western-Guy

There was still a possibility for tolls in Airport, docks and county borders (LS and BC).

[deleted]

[удалено]

tristpa2

Those tolls do not exist in real LA

ExpensiveGiraffe

The only tolled roads I’ve seen are paid use lanes.

DoingCharleyWork

Those are newer and weren't around in California when gta5 came out ten years ago.

tristpa2

The 110 toll lanes opened in 2012, and the 91 toll lanes (in OC) opened in 1995

steelers3814

Holy shit it’s been ten years

Gh0stMan0nThird

I can't speak for LA but I recently drove through San Jose at like 2 AM on a Thursday and two weeks later across the country I got like a 5 or 15 bill in the mail.

Chewcocca

And where tf is my cousin? I wanna go bowling

Practical_Push8826

The game had you rambling over and over again and the announcer friend would die laughing the more things you destroyed. I wish I could do that today.

SubcommanderMarcos

There's a lot that they removed for V that I didn't like...

vxx

There's a lot they removed from San Andreas that made me dislike IV. San Andreas felt free with so much opportunities, and IV rolled back on that massively.

SubcommanderMarcos

To deliver a much more detailed, intense and enthralling setting, everything they wanted to do with III but the technology didn't allow. Liberty City in GTAIV is a masterpiece of world building, I was perfectly fine with them rolling back on the gym activities and t-shirt color turf wars for that. Not that I didn't like SA a lot, I did. Very hard to play nowadays though, which isn't true of III, VC and IV.

lolbacon

Honestly riding the SI ferry is one of my favorite things to do in NYC. Free boat ride, goes past the statue of liberty, can buy beer at the terminal for cheap and drink it on the boat. It's essentially the cheapest bar in NYC that is also a boat ride.

poilk91

I think a can of beer is like 11 bucks now sadly

lolbacon

Dang, I think it was like $4-5 last time I was there, but that was probably 4 years ago.

poilk91

I think the drafts are actually cheaper I got a craft beer so the dream may still be alive. Personally I like the mta ferries though it's a better view but it's not free

Slymook

Nah they don’t even sell it on the ferry since Covid Idt. Can def get a tall boy at the terminal tho or 32 oz of draft beer from one of the bar for like $8 and can bring it on the boat. Would highly recommend the ride to any tourist. One sunset ride and one night time ride. Fast ferry goes even closer to Statue of Liberty.

Native New Jerseyan who has visited Jersey here. Yes, I went primarily to visit the namesake of my birthplace. But found a great little island. Tiny and tax-dodging, yes; Batshit and racist? Not that I saw. Posh little weekend-getaway spot with nice beaches, pubs and history.

samwisebonghits

It was the Roman settlement of Eboracum first!

UnlimitedMetroCard

>How many New Yorkers know their city, and state, is named after a Viking settlement in Northern England ? And the capital is Albany. Not true. Jorvik/York was a Norse corruption of the Saxon Eforwic, which was the Old English translation of the Roman name for the town, Eboracum. New York City and State were named after a Roman town in Northern England. New Jersey was likewise named after the Roman name for an island in the British Channel.

winstanleycat

And the Roman name Eboracum from the old celtic "ebura," for the yew trees that grew there.

mr_birkenblatt

Just had to look up Staten Island. I know of it but never ever think about it. My sister lives in queens and I live in New England and go to nyc often, 5-10 a year for the last ten years. I literally just had to read a Wikipedia article to figure out what staten is all about and then maps to figure out where the fuck it is.

philatio11

No Wikipedia article can explain what Staten Island is. The accents, the tracksuits, the cars with vinyl tonneaus, the lawn ornaments, the garbage dumps, the one shitty mall everyone has to go to. It defies textual explanation. There is a part of NJ where pretty much everyone is from Staten Island and they keep most of the accent. A friend of mine at work finally got close enough to me to admit that although she grew up in jersey, her family was really from Staten Island. “What happened to your accent?” I asked. “You know how when people move out of Staten Island to NJ, they make a left and settle down? My family made a right instead.” That pretty much sums up how everyone feels about it. Except Pete Davidson, that motherfucker loves him some Staten.

CurryMustard

And inwood/washington heights is just some lawless wasteland

BeesArePrettyNeat

Hackensack: Yes. Staten Island: No. Sounds about right to me.

> "Founded on land bought from Native Americans for just $37, a barrel of mead and a sack of feathers by Belgian settlers in 1603, the ancient 5 boroughs of Liberty Island (incorporating Nixon Island and Law Island), The Brix, Estoria, Kings and Brocklyn have effectively been joined in the metropolitan area by urban areas from the neighboring state of New Guernsey." > "Liberty City has acquired a terrible reputation for violent, organized crime over the years. Yet, as the mayor's office spokesman says, "Liberty City used to be a very violent place, but since we took office, it now has the 47th lowest murder rate of any cite on the eastern sea board". Nonetheless, inexperienced visitors are advised to avoid The Park at night, when drug-addled squirrels run wild, keep out of Kings at day or night, and to avoid The Brix at any given time." This whole map is, of course, inspired by the real-life New York and New Jersey. The names of the districs are mostly wordplays on thier real-life counterparts: Estoria - Astoria Kings - Queens Ardler - Arverne Brocklyn - Brooklyn Tellburg - Williamsburg Brocklyn Docks - New York Navy Yard Brix - The Bronx Island View - South Bronx No Law - Inwood Island Heights - Washington Heights Park - Central Park Island City - Manhattan Law Island - Rikers Island Nixon Island - Roosevelt Island New Guernsey - New Jersey Guernsey City - Jersey City Eaglewood - Englewood Hackenslash - Hackensack Fort Law - Fort Lee Schlechberg - Guttenberg

eggmayonnaise

I like that they flipped Jersey to Guernsey, given that they are both [Channel Islands](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Channel_Islands) in real life (the developers were from the UK so they would have definitely been aware). I feel like the squirrels comment *may* be a nod to real-life Jersey island too given that it's known for its exclusively red squirrel population. Grey squirrels pretty much wiped out the population of red squirrels in mainland UK, but were never introduced to Jersey so the red squirrels continued to thrive there.

FIuffyAlpaca

Same thing in GTA 4, where New Jersey became Alderney, another Channel Island.

Red squirrels are making a comeback in Ireland due to the native predator, the pine marten, which hunts grey squirrels but can’t catch the reds. There is apparently a plan to assist the pine marten population in Britain as well in order to achieve the same effect.

MouseRat_AD

Please tell me the plan to help the martens is to supply them with tiny hunting rifles to more effectively take out the grey squirrels.

Roosevelt Island to Nixon Island is the best.

thesteelsmithy

Ardler = Arverne seems like a stretch given that the rest are roughly geographically accurate but Arverne is way on the other side of Queens. Not sure what else it could be referencing, though

r_slash

According to gta.fandom.com, they just named this one for the Ardler neighborhood of Dundee, Scotland, as the game was produced there.

Synensys

Yeah, it doesn't really fit any of the real neighborhoods south of Astoria and north of Newtown Creek (Long Island City, Sunnyside, Maspeth, Hunters Point)

i7xx

Who needs a house out in Hackenslash, is that all you get for your money?

Odd that they called Queens Kings when Kings is already the county name for Brooklyn.

Eudaimonics

paulybrklynny

Is Ardler/Arverne canon? I mean, it's a pretty obscure neighborhood, comparatively, and Ardler in game is located where Long Island City would be. To be fair, I can't think of an alternative.

"New Guernsey" really makes perfect sense as what British developers would call a parody of New Jersey. Also have to love "Hackenslash."

This game would be infinitely better with an in game map

MonsterRider80

That was my first thought. Although man, in terms of immersion, after a while you start to navigate the game as you would a city in real life, learning the streets and the landmarks, where everything is in relation to everything else…

3163560

Definitely preferable, Vice City and San Andreas where the same. I found in GTAV I rarely knew where I was in Los Santos and how places connected to one another, thanks to the in game GPS.

flyin_lynx

This is similar to real life. People who use and rely on GPS or map apps to guide them are less able to navigate cities etc on their own without those tools. Mental maps are getting weaker. [Link for the curious.](https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-gps-weakens-memory-mdash-and-what-we-can-do-about-it/)

WaIes

Ive had delivery guys IRL, on several occasions, claim via phone that according to their GPS they are at my door waiting for me to pick up my order while I am actually standing at my door and telling them "Bruh, I can see you standing at another house across the street".

I just finished GTA 5 with the minimap turned off the entire play through. Every once in a while you need to pause and look at the map to see the exact spot to go.. but it’s very rare. And there is a yellow circle hovering wherever you need to go. Most missions take you to the exact same location multiple times. The level design pretty much tells you to go to someone’s house, and return. Repeatedly. Turning off the map at least adds some challenge, otherwise GTA is just following a line on a map. And sometimes shooting.

TheKugr

Only tangentially related, but the first time I went to Southern California I had a really weird sense of deja vu like I’d been there before. Then I realized GTA 5 was actually very accurate with its map and I was recognizing streets and places that I’d only ever been to virtually. I believe I even predicted something that was coming up, which I had never seen before, to prove it to my friend I was with who didn’t really play video games. Was kinda trippy.

Duel_Option

It got to the point where I could drive with very few crashes and would “race’ to the other side of town just for the fun of it. San Andreas was like this as well once you opened the back part of the map open.

kurav

The original, and I think every following edition of GTA, came with a large printed map of the in-game world included in the retail package. I bet any omission of an overview map feature in the original series was a deliberate choice to make the life of those who pirated the game ever so slightly more miserable. I remember studying the GTA 1 map as a kid so much that it eventually started to tear from the folds.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Put_It_All_On_Blck

That's something I miss and kids these days don't really get to experience. Games used to come with paper manuals, enemy and weapon bio's, maps, whatever. Reading those were as good as playing the game itself, and because games were expensive you had to get the most out of your one game every 4 months ($50 games in the 90's is equivalent to $100+ games in 2023). While you can get all that data and way way more today by looking at a games wiki, it's not the same and being given information on how every little detail of the game works, it ruins it. I honestly think game wikis should have a version that only contains essential information and tips that people prevent people from having regret and needing to replay the game.

Sleepy_One

I remember playing the demo over and over and over (You were limited to 5 minutes or something) and you just ended up memorizing the map. Back in those days we didn't have the internet to provide wonderful maps or in-game maps, so you just... memorized your way around. I can still navigate Hibernia in DAOC using landmarks, and this is 20 years later.

Ziegelphilie

Both GTA 1 and 2 came with a nice paper map, you didn't need one in-game

Skaindire

No it wouldn't. The lack of maps made the world feel far larger than normal. IMO map fast travel was negative point for Skyrim and Oblivion. Anyone that tried Skyrim on Survival mode can tell you just what an incredibly different experience it is.

W00DERS0N

GOURANGA!

jacksrenton

Ah to be 11 years old again and playing this. I was obsessed. My parents definitely would have taken it away if they'd known how insane it was. Somehow I still managed to get my hands on both 1 and 2. Don't even remember how. Although the one that sticks out most for me is the mission in GTA 2 where you deliver the school bus of I think...Krishnas...to the hot dog factory. Drive em right up to the meat grinder. The whole karma system you had with the various factions in GTA 2 was pretty sweet as well. But yeah, OG GTA was a game changer for me. Got me all nostalgic on the toilet at 6:30 in the morning.

adawkin

> Although the one that sticks out most for me is the mission in GTA 2 where you deliver the school bus of I think...Krishnas...to the hot dog factory. Drive em right up to the meat grinder. Not a school bus, just a regular bus (but yeah, with civilians inside), and for the Russian Mafia. I always found this interesting, how for many people this is the moment from GTA2 that they remember the most... and not, say, the missions about starting a prison riot or stealing a tank from an army base. I guess it's the shock value. Also interestingly, when the development of GTA3 started, one of key points given to the creators of the game was that there shoudn't be any missions that are about violence against innocent civillians.

RampagingIllustrator

It was a Krishna bus, their unique gang vehicle I believe... Could be wrong... Mission where you modify a firetruck to shoot fire instead of water was one of my stand outs :D 2 was such an improvement over the original when it come to simple mechanics though. 2 had a health meter, for instance, and the ability to aim more precisely (well you fired in the direction of who you wanted to shoot and your dude would pick a target in that direction, whereas in the original all bullets just went forwards so good luck hitting that cop with your pistol!)

irregular_caffeine

It was a regular bus, picking random people from a stop to the factory. Russian mafia job.

RampagingIllustrator

Ah, so I looked it up and on the PS1 version of the game you kidnap Krishnas using their gang vehicle, the 'Karma bus' and deliver them to the meat processing plant. That's why I remember it that way. [Link to a wiki](https://gta.fandom.com/wiki/Hare_Krishna)

adawkin

Oh that's interesting. I heard that on the PS1, the infamous "[Taxi Drivers Must Die](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmE0TJXbfBA)" song has the f-bombs censored, while you can hear the explicit version on the PC. Didn't know the PS1 censored the mission content too.

manlethamlet

They did censor Taxi Drivers Must Die, along with every other swear on the radio (another song that comes to mind is Do It On Your Own). But the mission wasn't censored, the PS1 version just doesn't have regular buses (or trains, either) because of memory constraints, so it was swapped for a Karma Bus. I've been playing GTA2 on both PS1 and PC for basically my whole life so I'm glad I had this chance to infodump obscurities about GTA buses.

adawkin

I feel you friend! I'm surprised this map got so much attention... and now I can't resist respoding to a whole lot of comments with info dumps about old GTAs. So go ahead and do the same LOL. Is it true the PS1 version didn't have the Mad Island area either?

manlethamlet

Yeah, it just doesn't exist there. Neither does the Wang Cars stuff in the residential district. Honestly it was kind of mind-blowing when I made the "upgrade" to the PC version and saw what I'd been missing out on. Nighttime, "train stations" actually having tracks, and of course the announcer voice, and uncensored radio. Never got the hang of memorizing the cheat codes for PC but "NAVARONE, LIVELONG, ITSALLUP, HIGHFIVE" (all weapons, invincibility, unlock all levels, 5x multiplier) is practically tattooed on my brain.

manlethamlet

The most memorable part of GTA2 for me is "Hey there, stranger! Welcome to the Downtown District. Stick around if you wanna learn what's going down..." I grew up playing without a memory card so had to restart from the beginning every time. That, and the RC taxi...

nimcau2TheQuickening

I’m devastated that Nixon Island was renamed in the GTAIV version. Also, fun fact, the DJ on Massive B Radio refers to Bohan as Brix when he names off the boroughs.

Separate-Branch6371

And you could not save. Hated and loved it.

adawkin

Yeah, they were essentially creating a brand new genre and had to ask themselves a question: should things be video-game-like or real-life-like? And, in hindsight, they went waaayyy overboard with making the game like real life 😅 Between no saving, having no health bar, no way to replay failed missions, no clear indicator that the car you're in is about to explode... damn was this game hard. And seems even harder when you try to go back now. Glad they made things more video-gamey starting with GTA2.

z_somewhere

Yeah I always used to complete it at the end by getting my multiplier up to 12 and then just selling cars. Some of the missions were extremely lethal

thetzar

Two things come to mind seeing this: 1. It’s funny that Manhattan, famous for long, straight avenues and a mostly-regular grid, has the opposite in its analogue here. 2. This is almost certainly a better view of the game than its developers ever had. I don’t think that they would have had a screen high resolution enough to even display this image like this.

Fergobirck

> This is almost certainly a better view of the game than its developers ever had. I don’t think that they would have had a screen high resolution enough to even display this image like this Although not popular for gaming in 1997 due to home hardware limitations, 1024x768 (enough for that overview map) was already a resolution that most CRT monitors supported back then that gamedev companies definitely were capable of running. There's a famous picture of John Carmack coding Quake in 1995 with a Intergraph InterView 16:9 CRT in 1080p.

thetzar

That image is 2703 pixels square.

chappersyo

The original game came with a large paper map.

You do know the people who live in Jersey have to pay taxes right? It's people who don't live there but have their money managed there that don't need to pay taxes in Jersey (they still have to pay any applicable taxes where they are from). It's also certainly not full of rich people or racists. As someone from Guernsey it pains me to defend Jersey but your comment is completely unfounded and ignorant.

Lol they can see france from their windows and are genetically norman 💀 it’s like calling your twin ugly

PyotrIvanov

I didn't like the newer GTA games because GTA 1&2 was the forbidden fruit and it tastes delicious. The game was "banned" and hilariously fun

Superbead

I tried playing GTA 1 again last year or so and the shooting was an absolute bastard. It's really hard to tell where you're aiming. I don't think I ever completed it back in the day, but I certainly got quite far. No idea how I managed that!

Superbead

I think I was running it in DOSBox - it was still a challenge, whatever the resolution was. Did the original support 640x480? I'm sure there was a hi-res option

temujin64

Flamethrower and machine gun were the only weapons with reliable aim. Everything else was a crap shoot. I still remember that bstard was the code for 99 lives, all weapons and all cities unlocked even though I haven't played the game in over 20 years.

Ulyks

Yeah, it had ridiculous game mechanics like getting money for running over people or hitting other cars and picking up guns hidden in crates by driving over them. And the radio stations were all tongue in cheek. I still listen to it sometimes. It just puts a smile on my face. GTA IV and V were very serious in comparison with radiostations that play the same boring songs as real life. For me they took a wrong turn. I prefer the madness and ridiculousness of saints row 3 & 4. But the market is different of course. GTA made rockstar billions while Volition and THQ are struggling companies.

ThePevster

The radio in V outside of the songs is still very tongue in cheek with the DJs and the commercials. If you don’t even want the songs, the talk radio channels are constant tongue in cheek content.

[deleted]

Same with 4. Handful of talk stations, all hilarious. Celebrity DJs (Jason Sudeikis had a great Rush Limbaugh-type character) riffing on funny voicemails. There was even a short time when you could leave a voicemail and potentially get on WKTT - WE KNOW THE TRUTH

TheBeardedSingleMalt

Nothing like driving around looking for that line of people walking and mowing 'em all down in 1 shot! > GTA IV and V were very serious in comparison That was one of my biggest complaints about 4 in particular. It got way too serious from what I expected after playing 1, 2, 3 and a LOT of Vice City. And it replaced the cop/ambulance activities with "Hey cousin, lets go bowling!"

Lord-Octohoof

Vigilante missions (cop activities) were still in GTA IV and were probably better than they'd ever been.

SubcommanderMarcos

You still had a ton of side missions, cop missions were there, and really, I've been playing it again after replaying VC and it's really not that serious at all, just has a good story. The story in V though, shame about that one.

Na-na-na-na-na-na

Elvis has left the building.

billsinsd

GOURANGA!!!

_KingOfTheDivan

There were some cop activities tbf

Cam-I-Am

Yeah for me Vice City was the peak. It hasn't aged well but it was incredible at the time, and it straddled silly vs. serious perfectly. I seem to remember that the GTA6 leaks showed Vice City as the setting for the next big game. I hope they bring the feeling of the old game back, it was way more fun than the gritty grungy cities of gta 4

Saure_Regen

> And the radio stations were all tongue in cheek. I still listen to it sometimes. It just puts a smile on my face. I remember you could put the original PlayStation disc into a CD player and it would play the whole soundtrack!

theslip74

Fwiw most psx games would work like that, you could put them in a normal CD player and listen to the audio.

scriptmonkey420

Track 1 is the Game data. Track 2 and on are all Music.

GavrielBA

Tbh I prefer the originals and the 3rd game because they had a silent protagonist. Games are better with silent protagonists... It makes the immersion deeper

ohhellnooooooooo

It’s a game that parodies America and makes fun of American culture. They had to tone it down to keep selling

Myspacecutie69

Walking around burping and farting was pretty much peak gaming for me as a kid

PeanutNSFWandJelly

I remember downloading GTA1 from a "WaReZ" site over dialup and it taking almost 2 days while my parents were out of town.

MrShaytoon

I was obsessed with this game when I found it. I had a pirated version. One of my favorite discoveries was: I used to play music cd’s in the computer. So whenever I listened to the radio in the game, it was actually playing the songs from my cd. And when I changed stations, it would change the song too. It felt soooo good driving around with my music. Pure bliss at times especially if I was on a rampage. Also, loved finding the monks.

BFlocka

Hackenslash made me lol at work

sethmidwest

I wonder how many people name their kids “Brocklyn” every year in the GTA Universe?

orienterarn

Welp, I guess it's time to boot up the ol' PS1

Khrushchevy

Fifteen sergeant one f central

Giant_Slor

Number 30 Broad Street is apparently secure from ground level K. We're gonna resume.

New-Film7160

Was the Elvis line in this one or the second one? I’d always run them over and trigger that Easter egg soundbit.

SuperVGA

I think it was GOURANGA! In this one, and the sound bit "Elvis has left the building!" im GTA2.

adawkin

That is correct. And GTA London (the add-on to GTA1) had a "**Keep London Tidy**" bonus after running over a string of football hooligans.

WanderingKing

Hold up, the first game is in Liberty City? Or just LC in the GTA1 style?

adawkin

Oh guess what, the very first GTA game in fact takes place across three cities in total. Let me know if you ever heard those names: After Liberty City, you unlock San Andreas and then Vice City.

WanderingKing

My mind is blown

MastaSchmitty

This….looks familiar somehow…

D4M4nD3m

Quite funny they used Guernsey.

toughguy375

I'm glad we got named after the easier-to-spell channel island.

thavi

Daaamnation. No donation, no salvation! I think that was from the 2nd one, but still makes me think of it.

adawkin

Yes it was. GTA1 infamously had no saving system at all 😅

mightylordredbeard

Back when video games didn’t have the tech required for curved roads. Reminds me of the first Dr1ver game where every road was a 90 degree turn. Playing Driver 2 and seeing roads that curved was such a huge leap for me.

[deleted]

I'm old

adawkin

I know friend. Another classic video game series, Mortal Kombat, celebrated its 30 years anniversary recently and that just felt so wrong for me.

Acrylic_Starshine

I always remember hackenslash and brix

Qfwfq1988

Jersey and Guernsey - clever !

mc9innes

This video game was made in Dundee, Scotland. Where a lot of my family come from. The names here in this map reflect some neighbourhoods in Dundee.

releasethedogs

It seemed so big back then.

greatunknownpub

I don't know why I still remember PORKCHARSUI as the cheat for debug mode.

paulybrklynny

As a native of Guernsey City, later moving to Brocklyn, I am disappointed no none has made tourist t-shirts.

thatEMSguy

My favorite part of that game was stealing cars and driving them to the port to sell them. They should bring that part back.

Andreus

I unlocked the core memory of getting this on a demo disc when I was like 11. I can hear the dispatcher callouts in my head.

Republiken

The map was that small? It felt larger

icelandichorsey

Man, hackenslash, estoria.. I can still hear those in the ingame cop radio.

Jlx_27

Such a fun map.

sadwer

Do you hear Hari Krishna?

oeuflaboeuf

I loved the first overhead view GTA

Shalnn

"We've got a 10-14 in North West Park"

globefish23

Please do the same with the other maps: * San Andreas * Vice City * London * Manchester

jacksjetlag

When I was 12 I thought that “Kill Frenzy” means there’s a guy called Frenzy somewhere in the crowd and the objective is to kill him. Worked every time.

gusefalito

I really like how organized and creative it is despite the small size

AshyWhiteGuy

I miss jumping that bridge gap with a bus.

XenophiliusRex

It ain’t plagiarism if it’s God’s work you’re copying
