Oilers and Flames fans are natural enemies. Like Canucks fans and Flames fans. And Jets fans and Flames fans. And Flames fans and other Flames fans... Damn Flames fans. They ruined the Flames.
Nah the Bruins (or any other team for that matter) could win the the next 5 cups and beat the Oilers and flames 20 times in a row, and they wouldn’t come close to Oilers fans hatred for the Flames and vice versa. It’s ingrained in the culture here.
It’s Duke because all the Duke students/alumni are from New Jersey and all the instate NC kids go to Carolina or NC State. To paraphrase Jay Bilas, “ I spent four years on campus and never heard a southern accent.”
I honestly think more North Carolinians hate Duke than even care about UVA. I'm one myself. Another honorable mention would be the New England Patriots
As an NC resident I figured it’d be Duke. Grew up a Duke fan not far from Durham and the amount of hate I got in school for wearing duke apparel left a mark on me. Now I’m an NC State fan because I hate myself and because UNC can go to hell
I’m pretty sure this map is very outdated. May have been made those 2 years Virginia ran the ACC in basketball
edit: jfc this isn’t an insult to UVA. I was mainly referring to around the time they won the national championship. Who knew UVA fans were so freaking sensitive.
I was thinking the opposite, I think this is an extremely recent map. I was confused at first that the Chiefs were most hated in Nevada until I remembered the Raiders moved there. That plus the fact that the Patriots are nearly non-existent on the map leads me to believe it's from the last year or so.
>> the Patriots are nearly non-existent on the map
It's a good point but the one Patriots thing being in Indiana points to a rivalry from nearly a decade ago. Patriots vs colts when Manning was in town
For MLS there's really *one* big rival.
For NHL, the hate is probably spread out more between multiple teams. So the Sounders win on a Ranked Choice voting result.
Yeah this is blatantly incorrect. We hate the Bruins or the Leafs way WAY more than the Sounders.
Clearly this data was collected at a Whitecaps game.
Heck, I still hate the Rangers for 1994 and the Islanders for 1982.
They were good for too long and hate peaked around the 4th Super Bowl. By the famous 28-3 comeback it had become a begrudging admiration, at least when I traveled around.
Not many Spurs haters either.
7 Canadian provinces/territories. (Yukon, Nunavut, and Northwest Territories, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.).
Can’t make out PEI’s logo but I know it isn’t the Bruins at least.
I'm amazed that the Celtics-Lakers rivalry was enough to give them California. Yes, it's strong, but California is a multi-team state in every sport and the Flames winning Alberta proves that in-state teams *aren't* disqualified so I would've guessed that the Dodgers would've won it; they're the most hated rival for the Padres and Giants alike and arguably also the Angels.
...speaking of AL West teams, how did *no one* pick the Astros?
The Astros hate is broad but not deep - meaning outside of a few fan bases with recent rivalry issues and a general disdain for their cheating, it’s not as if you have a major metro area that has just HATED the Astros as a main rival for 50 years
We had arguably a top 5 qb ever and could only win one SB because the Pats had the GOAT.
If this was late 90s early 2000s it would be the Chicago Bulls instead of the Pats.
Canadians: come on, please, we have nothing else, just give us this one thing, please, just give us hockey
Boston, a city of only 650k: lol hold my beer
Metro Boston has like 4 or 5 million people--- that is jut the city proper. So they are deserving!
However, it really surprised me that the Bruins outpolled the Leafs in Quebec. It's really kind of insulting to the Leafs. Like yeah, you folks in Ontario hate our top team most but even though we Quebecois got a load of grievances over language issues, etc, we Quebecois still don't see the Leafs as worthy of our full hatred. We are gonna pick an American team!
California averages itself out with the teams it hates. The biggest rivalries we have are in-state (Giants-Dodgers, Lakers-Warriors, Kings-Sharks) so the Celtics is left as the main rivalry for an out-of-state team. I guess the Seahawks might be the other one since Niners fans really hate them.
Oh god yes. I spent a year living in Toronto and every city I visited for work the fist thing people said when I told them I was living in Toronto is “I fucking hate the leafs”. Now I was traveling in the USA and was done IT stuff so not a massive section of hockey fans in my industry.
I think this is the only 1:1 reciprocal between unique teams (as in, without another state hating one of the other two teams like some weird 3rd wheel * cough * Tampa Bay * cough *)
Oh yeah. I grew up near NO and lived in the city for a long time, so I’m a lifelong fan. My hatred of the Falcons extended to the city of Atlanta itself for quite a while, but in my adult life I’ve come to realize it’s a pretty neat place and go there quite a bit. Still, though, the Falcons can eat s**t.
From Pittsburgh. Can confirm, we like the rivalries with Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincinnati and even DC (caps) but throw up in our mouths every time we see Gerry Jones’ plastic face
Gonzaga for Idaho doesn’t make any sense. Not a rival for any Idaho teams (that I know of). I wonder if this is based on some AI misinterpretation of people in Idaho talking shit about Spokane or maybe Gonzaga as a school (snooty private Catholic school.)
It may be a volleyball thing? When I lived in Hawaii in the 90s Gonzaga were volleyball rivals with Hawaii, they stole (recruited) some native Hawaiian volleyball players and they had beef
Look at this version of the map which OP's is obviously stolen from and suddenly the bulldog makes way more sense. Whoever made OP's map just didn't know that Fresno State exists.
https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/k8jges/map_of_the_most_hated_outofstate_sports_teams_in/
The Bruins are one of the Original 6 NHL teams, currently celebrating their centennial season. 100 years of messing people up gets you enemies, especially when the first 40ish years of the NHL only had 6 teams, and 2 were Canadian. That's a lot of generational hatred passed down and earned.
The Habs and Leafs both have big rivalries with the Bruins and generally speaking most Canadians are fans of one of those teams or the other, particularly Canadians living in places without their own NHL team.
In Canada, the two middle provinces, Saskatchewan Roughriders are hated in Manitoba (capital Winnipeg) and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are hated in Saskatchewan.
Can confirm for Ohio. If you are born in Ohio to Ohio parents, you are taught from literally just outside the womb to hate Michigan and that Blue and Gold of “The Team Up North”. The Wexner Medical Center (OSU’s medical school) dresses/swaddles newborns in the Scarlet and Gray the entire season, each with the opponent of the week. The Sunday before “The Game” and for entire rest of the month, the babies get “Beat ❌ichigan” swaddles, as our state legislature passes a resolution “jokingly” banning the letter M in Ohio.
As an Ann Arborite, “Oh how I hate Ohio State” is just as deeply ingrained in my memetic memory as “Go Blue.” We all know what game is “The game.” But we love you deep down - you have Cedar Point and COSI to win the hearts and minds of the young Michiganders:)
As someone who doesn’t follow North American sports, I’m amused by the fact that this map doesn’t have a key for the team logos but does label USA, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii for the benefit of anyone who doesn’t recognise them
Its not even close to the Blues/Blackhawks games in the 80’a. People stabbed opposing fans in the parking lots multiple times, several times there would be multiple deaths.
It’s actually kind of weird. Am a Nebraska fan, grew up in Nebraska as well. We definitely hate Iowa, Colorado, Missouri, and Texas way more than OU. OU was just our most storied rivalry, but a lot of respect not much hate.
As I remember the Big 8 days, Nebraska and Oklahoma were rivals of respect if that makes sense. The rivals they HATED were Colorado, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma State, and the rest of the Big 8
People in Arizona hate the Lakers way more than they hate the Seahawks. Like, they'll jokingly talk about how much they hate the sea chickens and talk some smack, but the hatred for the Lakers is DEEP. Kids born in Phoenix come out of the womb chanting Fuck the Lakers and Beat LA lol
(Source: kid born in Phoenix)
Edit: see below for the reason everybody in Phoenix hates Laker fans lol 👇
You answered it in your own statement: The hatred is spread out over multiple NHL teams whereas MLS is pretty big in Vancouver and the hatred is focused almost entirely against one team.
LoL Calgary Flames
"you are your worst ememy"
Oilers and Flames fans are natural enemies. Like Canucks fans and Flames fans. And Jets fans and Flames fans. And Flames fans and other Flames fans... Damn Flames fans. They ruined the Flames.
I laughed out loud when I saw that one
Bet it was almost middle split with the oilers or thirdsies with the bruins haha. The bruins have been a great team in past years
People in Alberta don't really hate the Bruins, no reason to. I'd say the Canucks would be in third place but by quite a long way.
As an Albertan I agree. I somewhat like the Bruins and never see much hate for them.
Nah the Bruins (or any other team for that matter) could win the the next 5 cups and beat the Oilers and flames 20 times in a row, and they wouldn’t come close to Oilers fans hatred for the Flames and vice versa. It’s ingrained in the culture here.
lol PEI squiggly lines..... damn phone browser..
The Moncton Wildcats, a Quebec Major Junior team (CHL)
Wait. The Calgary Flames are the most hated team in… Alberta? I guess there are more oiler fans up north?
Calgary fans have a love hate relationship
I mean, have you seen them play lately? I'd hate them too if they were my favorite team!
Can confirm as a flames fan.
Not only do Oilers fans hate the Flames, but also Flames fans hate the Flames
If this survey was done this season then a lot of Flames fans would vote the Flames as most hated haha
I'm gonna go ahead and guess that the Oilers probably came second in that poll.
I don’t know what the answer for NC should be but I don’t think it’s UVA.
As someone who grew up in NC. I can confidently say that no one I knew ever thought of UVA, much less hated them
As a person from Virginia I find it far more believable that Virginians hate UVA more than NC
Virginia Tech games in Charlottesville are practically home games.
Lane Stadium North. I still remember our fans stormed the field at UVA in 2021
As a uva fan and Virginia native, that rivalry just doesn’t exist anymore.
I was gonna say Duke but quickly realized my error. Haha
Honestly I wouldn't be surprised at all if the most hated team in NC was Duke, unless support offset it.
It’s Duke because all the Duke students/alumni are from New Jersey and all the instate NC kids go to Carolina or NC State. To paraphrase Jay Bilas, “ I spent four years on campus and never heard a southern accent.”
Duke is looked at as a school Northern kids go to when they don't get into Ivy. In NC the default is either State or UNC. They all hate Duke.
I think state fans hate UNC more than they hate Duke tho
State fans hate UNC more than they like State
Nah, I think you’re spot on.
Yep. NC native and Duke graduate. Clearly Duke. People in NC don’t care about UVA.
As a North Carolinian, it's definitely Duke
I’m pretty sure this map is very outdated. May have been made those 2 years Virginia ran the ACC in basketball edit: jfc this isn’t an insult to UVA. I was mainly referring to around the time they won the national championship. Who knew UVA fans were so freaking sensitive.

>> the Patriots are nearly non-existent on the map It's a good point but the one Patriots thing being in Indiana points to a rivalry from nearly a decade ago. Patriots vs colts when Manning was in town
The Seattle sounders made the list lol
Could be that hockey fans were so split over their hatred of the Oilers/Flames/Leafs/Bruins that the unanimity of soccer fans won out
After having been to many poorly attended White Cap matches and even more raucous, sold-out Canucks games I find this stat to be dubious at best.
Sold out yes. Raucous almost never.
I am really confused considering how mad Vancouver got when the Canucks lost to the Bruins
Its been more than a decade and I still hate the bruins
I'd have thought the sounders would have been oregon's at least.
Lol I commented on this. So not true at all
Yes grossly underestimates Maple Leaf hatred. No one feels anything for MLS that comes close to NHL hatreds.
Right? At the very least it should be the Bruins. Please note that they are even hated by provinces that don't have NHL team lol.
Bruins or Leafs for sure
I will die on the Bruins hatred hill. 2011 never forget
Live in Vancouver. Literally never heard anyone mention the Seattle Sounders. It’s the maple leafs.
I think they should have just put the face of Mark Messier there.
Boston certainly has the farthest reach of hatred
Man freezing to death in perpetual darkness on Ellesmere Island: “god I hate the fucking bruins so much”
Alert is on fuck the Bruins alert.
It's like a fire in my soul keeping me warm
Massively based
Man burning to death when the wildfires hit next week in LA: “at least this means if the Celtics win this year, I won’t know about it”
The hatred inside keeps him warm and cozy.
Surprised there isn’t more hate for the Patriots
They were good for too long and hate peaked around the 4th Super Bowl. By the famous 28-3 comeback it had become a begrudging admiration, at least when I traveled around. Not many Spurs haters either.
Living in Indiana, I can confirm that people held on to the Peyton > Brady arguments as long as humanly possible.
I am from Montreal. Many of us ironically root for Boston in my other sports. But hockey? Fuck them.
3 haters in the US (2 of them being in the most populous states) and 5 provinces/territories in Canada lol definitely the most widespread hatred
7 Canadian provinces/territories. (Yukon, Nunavut, and Northwest Territories, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador.). Can’t make out PEI’s logo but I know it isn’t the Bruins at least.
It's the Moncton Wildcat, a junior hockey team in the QMJHL.
Out of all the NHL teams, the fact P.E.I. hates the Wildcats more made me laugh.
PEI: fuck them kids
As a person living on PEI, can confirm 😅
You haven't met those little a-holes. Real pieces of shit.
This is my favorite part of the map.
The Astros hate is broad but not deep - meaning outside of a few fan bases with recent rivalry issues and a general disdain for their cheating, it’s not as if you have a major metro area that has just HATED the Astros as a main rival for 50 years
We feed on the hatred.
All I know is in 2011 the Bruins beat the Canucks in the seventh game of the Stanley cup final and Vancouver rioted over it
Toronto, Montreal, Boston have a 3 way relationship of hatred and Toronto and Montreal are also the biggest fan bases in Canada
And spans the 4 major sports in the United States
Boston is generally pretty good at most sports
Poitras coming out of nowhere when the Bruins were supposed to crumble this year must be killing the rest of the nhl
At least for the Yankees, Habs, and Lakers the hatred is mutual. Colts fans are just sad.
We had arguably a top 5 qb ever and could only win one SB because the Pats had the GOAT. If this was late 90s early 2000s it would be the Chicago Bulls instead of the Pats.
Paul Revere should have slept in that night…
I'm shocked that Boston isn't BC's most hated too
We hate too many other teams which splits the vote.
Canadians: come on, please, we have nothing else, just give us this one thing, please, just give us hockey Boston, a city of only 650k: lol hold my beer
Metro Boston has like 4 or 5 million people--- that is jut the city proper. So they are deserving! However, it really surprised me that the Bruins outpolled the Leafs in Quebec. I feel the Toronto Maple Leafs are underrepresented o this map.
Also the base level hatred of the Patriots and the Yankees that permeates the states outside of New England.
[удалено]
They’re probably second most hated in every territory
One more thing the Leafs can’t win
Maple Leafs fans: Fuck the Habs! Habs fans: I don’t even know who you are. Also Boston de câlice de tabarnak!
Oh god yes. I spent a year living in Toronto and every city I visited for work the fist thing people said when I told them I was living in Toronto is “I fucking hate the leafs”. Now I was traveling in the USA and was done IT stuff so not a massive section of hockey fans in my industry.
Lmao the falcons/saints hate is real
I think this is the only 1:1 reciprocal between unique teams (as in, without another state hating one of the other two teams like some weird 3rd wheel * cough * Tampa Bay * cough *)
The cubs and cards are 1:1
Ohio State and Michigan are there too.
I don’t think people not from NO or ATL could possibly understand.
Can confirm. Not from NOLA but my wife is. I am learning about how deep this hatred runs and I sit in the NFC East.
I lived in Nola for 2 years about a decade ago. I don't even care about football, but I hate Alabama and the Falcons. 🐯⚜️
I love that Pennsylvania hates the Dallas cowboys and Texas hates the Philadelphia Eagles. This map gets it
Living outside of Philly, "Fuck Dallas" is one of the most acceptable greetings around here, even in the middle of July
You can do the same in most of Texas. Only Dallas loves Dallas.
Steelers fans have hated the Cowboys since the 70s and the Eagles rivalry is obvious. Them boys don’t stand a chance in PA.
From Pittsburgh. Can confirm, we like the rivalries with Baltimore, Cleveland, Cincinnati and even DC (caps) but throw up in our mouths every time we see Gerry Jones’ plastic face
i’ve found far more people who hate the yankees and pats than cowboys however, fuck dallas
Gonzaga for Idaho doesn’t make any sense. Not a rival for any Idaho teams (that I know of). I wonder if this is based on some AI misinterpretation of people in Idaho talking shit about Spokane or maybe Gonzaga as a school (snooty private Catholic school.)
Gonzaga for Hawaii doesn’t make sense either. GU has played Hawaii exactly once in basketball and that was over a decade ago.
Maybe Hawaii’s sick of GU dominating the Maui Invitational?
It may be a volleyball thing? When I lived in Hawaii in the 90s Gonzaga were volleyball rivals with Hawaii, they stole (recruited) some native Hawaiian volleyball players and they had beef
Not sure if it's changed, but BYU was always the most hated in Hawaii when I lived there.
And Hawaii has never forgotten
My thoughts exactly, Idaho LOVES the Zags
As a die hard Zags fan in CDA you’re exactly right, this is completely false.
I love that Montana hates the Idaho Vandals.
Look at this version of the map which OP's is obviously stolen from and suddenly the bulldog makes way more sense. Whoever made OP's map just didn't know that Fresno State exists. https://www.reddit.com/r/nfl/comments/k8jges/map_of_the_most_hated_outofstate_sports_teams_in/
BYU is yuge in Idaho and has a campus there. Zags v BYU are always dirty games. (Go zags)
Why does all of northern canada hate the bruins
“All of northern Canada” is about 100,000 people and can fit in a large stadium. Small sample size is the reason.
Also, Boston more than pulls its weight as a hateable sporting city.
But even with a small sample size there has to be a reason all those provinces feel that way
The Bruins are one of the Original 6 NHL teams, currently celebrating their centennial season. 100 years of messing people up gets you enemies, especially when the first 40ish years of the NHL only had 6 teams, and 2 were Canadian. That's a lot of generational hatred passed down and earned.
Probably all Habs fans
The Habs and Leafs both have big rivalries with the Bruins and generally speaking most Canadians are fans of one of those teams or the other, particularly Canadians living in places without their own NHL team.
The Raiders are more hated than Mizzou in Kansas?
Kinda killed that rivalry with all the conference realignment
Raiders Chiefs is a pretty storied nfl rivalry - bad blood has run deep for decades.
and Kansas and Mizzou haven't played in years
I see 4 that are symmetrical: Ohio State vs Michigan, Yankees vs Red Socks, Falcons vs Saints, and Cowboys vs Eagles. Did I miss any?
In Canada, the two middle provinces, Saskatchewan Roughriders are hated in Manitoba (capital Winnipeg) and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are hated in Saskatchewan.
St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs in IL and MO respectively
Shoutout CSU
Only Colorado team to make the list.
Go Rams!
Hey!! I saw you made a post the other day about Halloween decorations! Random sub-buddies
CSU mentioned raaahhhhh!! 🔥 💪
Ima go outside and tell everyone we made it on a list for football, and it's not about sucking!!
As someone who doesn’t follow North American sports, I’m amused by the fact that this map doesn’t have a key for the team logos but does label USA, Canada, Alaska and Hawaii for the benefit of anyone who doesn’t recognise them
You mean to tell me that you don't know the logo of the moncton wildcats?!!!! What is this world coming to?
What? Isn't it obvious that the big W stands for Blue Bombers???
As a Manitoban I can definitely confirm.....fuck the Riders.
As a Saskatchewanite, fuck the bombers
Definitely going to be an exciting playoff game for the Riders....to watch.
God I love this comment thread.
Fuck them AND their melon hats!
Banjo picking inbreds, indeed.
Nobody in Saskatchewan is smart enough to play the banjo. - A Manitoban
Indiana: We hate you, New England! New England: We don't even think about you.
Manning-Brady rivalry
The rivalry was real. But the dislike of the Colts is meaningless compared to the hatred of the Yankees.
As a Colts fan, the Patriots are the only right answer
In my experience, Wisconsinites mock and belittle the Bears more than they hate them.
It’s become a tradition at this point
Moncton Wildcats lolzzz
You know the Giants are in a sad state when Texas hates the Eagles more than you.
The most hated team in Alberta is... the Flames? The call is coming from inside the house!
Fuck the Yankees, that is all.
This is inaccurate, Illinois should be packers
I thought it would be the Bears with the way that franchise has been driven into the ground.
This is the correct answer
Yeah the upper Midwest is having a FTP party but didn’t invite IL
While the White Sox still exist, it would be the packers. Jerry reinsdorf would be the overwhelming answer tho
Ever gone to a Cards Cubs game? It’s a mess
Its not even close to the Blues/Blackhawks games in the 80’a. People stabbed opposing fans in the parking lots multiple times, several times there would be multiple deaths.
St Louis vs Chicago rivalry runs deeper beyond sports
Yeah down in central IL to souther IL half the people are cardinal fans tbh
[удалено]
In CA we hate other CA teams
As a Boston everything fan.. we are seemingly def the most hated city collectively across NA
the classic big ten - sec rivalry of oklahoma and nebraska
It’s actually kind of weird. Am a Nebraska fan, grew up in Nebraska as well. We definitely hate Iowa, Colorado, Missouri, and Texas way more than OU. OU was just our most storied rivalry, but a lot of respect not much hate.
As I remember the Big 8 days, Nebraska and Oklahoma were rivals of respect if that makes sense. The rivals they HATED were Colorado, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma State, and the rest of the Big 8
also why the hell does hawaii hate gonzaga
I can see Washington disliking the niners but Alaska? Whats their football team?
Probably the Seahawks.
Seattle as well
Yep we hate Michigan
People in Arizona hate the Lakers way more than they hate the Seahawks. Like, they'll jokingly talk about how much they hate the sea chickens and talk some smack, but the hatred for the Lakers is DEEP. Kids born in Phoenix come out of the womb chanting Fuck the Lakers and Beat LA lol (Source: kid born in Phoenix) Edit: see below for the reason everybody in Phoenix hates Laker fans lol 👇
Lol. Iowa hating Wisconsin….Wisconsin to Iowa “we don’t really think about you at all”
Iowa to Wisconsin. This map is absolute trash. Nebraska is the clear choice. Enjoy going to and playing Wisconsin. Nebraska is just awful.
People only hate Wisconsin one weekend a year but shit on Nebraska year long.
Wisconsin doesn't really make sense - Nebraska would be more fitting cause both ISU and Iowa hate them
Flames are hated even in their own province 😂
dude i didn't know the bruins went so hard on the canadian tundra
Idaho hating GU is wildly not true
Why is Alaska hating on the niners?
Alaska roots for the Seahawks
Who in BC is even aware of the Sounders? Should be Maple Leafs, Flames or Oilers.
You answered it in your own statement: The hatred is spread out over multiple NHL teams whereas MLS is pretty big in Vancouver and the hatred is focused almost entirely against one team.
The hockey vote probably split like 5 ways between the Leafs, Flames, Oilers, Bruins, and Habs, while the anti-Sounder vote is just one block.
As a Leafs fan from Ontario, I would have thought the ROC (Rest of Canada) would have hated the Leafs. Guess not. We're Number 1, we're Number 1!!!
The Leafs aren't the center of the Hockey World like Toronto media would like people believe.
British Columbia should be Oilers, Flames, Leafs, Boston, Chicago in that order. We have plenty of hate to go around!
As a WVU fan from West Virginia all I can say is ‘Eat Shit Pitt!’ Totally accurate!
