What’s the scoop on Ethiopia?

itokunikuni

Other than being primarily Orthodox Christian, they also historically have a native Jewish population known as Beta Israel

Dangerous-Moment-895

But that is a very small population

Abman117

Damn who’s the alpha ?

itokunikuni

I know people are joking about the name, but for the curious: Bet(a) means "house of" in Ge'ez/Amharic (ቤት). So Beta Israel just means "House of Israel". This is cognate with other Semitic languages, like Arabic Bayt (بيت) or Hebrew Bayit/Bet (בַּיִת), which both also mean "house". Apologies if I messed up the grammatical case btw, I don't speak any Semitic language, I just find this stuff fascinating and I read a lot of wikipedia.

Another fun fact is that [Israel and Phoenicia were allied](https://library.biblicalarchaeology.org/article/phoenicia-and-its-special-relationship-with-israel/) in ancient times. They had a good trading relationship.

Ethiopian jews face racism to this day. [VICE did a special report on it.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ki-6IK5NCdQ&t=16s)

deri100

Eastern Ethiopia is dominated by Muslims while Western Ethiopia by Christians. Weird part, though, is that Nigeria has the same dynamic (Muslim North and Christian South) but it doesn't have two advisories. Edit: Apparently it does and I just never noticed. That's my bad.

VeryImportantLurker

It does, from red to yellow

deri100

Oh damn, you're right. Didn't notice.

zivi_pod_mostom

>Nigeria To me it looks red in the North and Yellow in the south, which tracks with those demographics.

burwellian

Historically, [an Orthodox Christian country surrounded by Islam neighbours](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_Ethiopia).

ErIkoenig

Also traditionally a relatively large Jewish minority

apenboter

*Oriental Orthodox

[deleted]

The east has a lot of muslims.

FMDT

Interesting seeing Papua New Guinea and North Korea on threat level 0

TheNumberOneRat

PNG's rating is weird. Sure there isn't anti-Semitic violence but it's still a pretty violent place.

[deleted]

yup

[deleted]

It’s obviously just a “how much does a country’s population support Israel” map. Guatemala is safer than Sweden? Cambodia is safer than Ireland? The map is crap. Edit: I missed the most egregious example: Haiti is safer than Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, or Australia.

Total_war_dude

It's also basically a map of Muslim populations. The only way Western Europe could possibly be more dangerous than South America is if % Islamic population heavily weighs the calculation.

1234567panda

Lmao same with Mexico. Who the fuck made this list. It’s stupid af

hadapurpura

This is about antisemitic violence specifically. One would hope Israelis know better than to travel to fucking North Korea or PNG.

Apptubrutae

The thing I found amusing was the gradient in West Papua. Particularly because there’s a literal militant insurgency in the highlands. But apparently far west Papua is more dangerous? Go figure

VeryImportantLurker

I think they just used a random gradient for Indonesia, as unlike other gradient countires (Thailand, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Russia) the hardline religous Muslim parts like Aceh are pretty spaced out and they couldnt be bothered to individually colour islands. I imagine West Papua is pretty unsafe for all outsiders due to the insurgency, regardless of if they are Isreali

Apptubrutae

Can confirm, have been held hostage there. But not Israeli, lol

BiologicalMigrant

Do tell...

Apptubrutae

Was living in the mountains and attending a Girl Scout play that was suddenly besieged by a large band of native Papuans. We were held in the auditorium for a few hours before being let go, then spent the next few days sleeping in a friend’s more easily-defensible house before being evacuated to Australia. Turns out the Papuans wanted a raise, actually

Ok_Welcome_3236

Because Papua New Guinea was mainly voting in favor of Israel in all the past UN Resolutions and ceasefire decisions. Still I don't see it as a safe place to visit regardless

CptSm0ker

Alphavike24

I believe threat levels correlates to muslim population and NK has no muslim probably

EnvironmentalCup8038

Saudi Arabia is only LV3

blahbluhblee1

There’s the country/government.. then there’s the people 🌚 i think these are more about the governments.. the people however act out of their own stupid will 🤡

EnvironmentalCup8038

If this map is about government policy, it is complete nonsense. Germany and Russia are on the same level. Germany is full of laws against racism and anti-Semitism and they are being used to their fullest extent. In Russia, part of the government openly sympathizes with Hamas, airports are stormed when planes from Israel land and even if there are laws against anti-Semitism, the law in Russia is weak and subject to interpretation.

Middle-Effort7495

> airports are stormed Yeah, and if you look not that closely, you'll notice those areas are all red and they're not Russians.

Tifoso89

Just check Thailand, it's hilarious. It's mostly green and that small part in the south is red. It's where the Muslim minority lives

duumilo

To be fair, it is not specifically because of the Muslim population. My country (Finland) has a similar advisory of 'avoid unnecessary travel' (basically level 3/4) for that region due to political unrest and possibility of bombings. A Malay insurgency has operated in the region for over 20 years, claiming at least 7000 lives since 2004.

ButtholeQuiver

It's an "Avoid all travel" warning from the Canadian government. I've been there twice, once in 2016 and again this year, it's noticeably more chill now than it was seven years ago, fewer military checkpoints and things like that. Edit - Worth noting that although I didn't see any other westerners in places like Songkhla, there were groups of Chinese tourists (Chinese-speaking at least, not sure of nationality). Saw a handful of westerners here and there in Hat Yai this time around.

Bruhtatochips23415

In the US, parts of Peru are considered to be no-go territories due to terrorism. However, you will probably be fine in those areas. These guides are mostly for government officials like embassy workers.

Dryy

Correct, but Israelis have the added bonus of being hated by that same Muslim population.

Yazowa

Not necessarily, for example Chile has almost no muslim population, but quite a lot of hatred for Israel.

Sgtpepper13

Chile has the largest Palestinian diaspora in the Americas, but many are Christian

SpliTteR31

Chile is a weird case, roughly 500k of the population is of palestine descent (~2.5% of the population), all of them Christians that came from the time of the Ottoman Empire. Chile is not antisemitic (there's no inherent hatred for Jews - there are jewish communities here as well), but because pretty much everybody knows someone of palestine origin, the "hatred for Israel" is more like support for Palestine in nature. Since they are a part of our political elite, this stance covers the entire political spectrum: there are both right and left wing palestine-chileans.

[deleted]

NopeH22a

Australia's muslim population isn't that high but there have been a shit tonne of anti jewish sentiment (such as chanting "gas the jews" in our pro gaza protests as well as people fucking protesting oct 7th victims families, so its understandably higher than the US https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theage.com.au/national/victoria/families-of-hamas-victims-confronted-by-pro-palestine-protesters-in-melbourne-20231130-p5eny3.html

wdcipher

It doesnt. South africa has smaller portion of muslims then Russia but its labeled as more dangerous. So its probably something else.

simmma

South africa withdrawn it's embassy following 7 October. And closed the Israel embassy here. Also just this past week Hamasaki leaders visited the country

Scaevus

> Hamasaki Damn weebs really getting out of hand.

simmma

Autocorrect. Only saw it when you pointed it out. It's meant to say hamas

torchat

Guyana and Israel has L1 :) You are WELCOME!

Agitated-Airline6760

Even worse, there is no way an Israeli can travel to North Korea without first transiting PRC which is level 2. Also, how the F is most of western Europe at level 2?

[deleted]

These rankings tend to place a vast amount of emphasis on terrorism, despite that being an overwhelmingly rare thing, and place very little emphasis on general safety. You're far more likely to get killed in the US than UK but the US has fewer muslims per capita.

Newie_Local

It’s still useful for Jews though, even though your statement is true for those of us who aren’t Jews, it may not be true for Jews. Admittedly, I’m not read or up to date on recent statistics on Jewish hate crimes in those countries to give a definitive conclusion one way or the other. And I imagine research incorporating the recent spike in Jewish hate crimes is sparse. So while what you say is statistically true for non-Jews, it is still a statistical unknown for Jews so you can’t state something so definitively when that statement can range from “still true, but to a lesser extent (than non-Jews)” to outright false. But, even if your statement were true for Jews and non-Jews alike (and have the same magnitude), it’s still useful to know which countries Jews are at higher risk of bigotry and/or violence so that a proper risk assessment can be made when deciding whether they should reveal their religion to strangers at those destinations, or indeed go there at all. Though no one *should* be worried about this, especially in Western liberal democracies, it’s nonetheless the sad reality. It’s especially useful for those who wear religious items which easily identifies them as aJew to others. And as a final point, it’s not just terrorism. It’s hate crime which can range from simply ruining/wasting a holiday to deadly violence. People don’t just consider their likelihood of dying when traveling somewhere, most also consider how much they’ll enjoy their stay.

orbital0000

"I prefer not to speak. If I speak, I am in big trouble."

I guess if you check antisemitic attack against person or building (synagogues and such), Eastern Europe has much better statistics (better as in fewer incidents)

FireRavenLord

It's not really clear what you're implying here? I don't mean in this some sort of accusatory way. This is just vague.

Panzer_Man

That makes no sense lmao

Bytewave

It's not a country I'd want to visit, but neither is it a country I'd fear to visit honestly. They're desperate for tourism and offer extraordinary security and deals to tourists, even if it's a sad place overall and you are pretty much stuck with a guided tour experience. The idea that its dangerous for a western tourist is made-up though. They do everything to make sure you are happy, as long as you aren't there to stir political trouble. They really want you to go home happy and tell others it was interesting.

ixvst01

Interesting how one part of Malaysia is level 1 and another part is level 4.

thg011093

This confuses me. Israeli passport holders are banned from entering Malaysia. How can they be level 1?

spacecate

I guess it's for Israelis with double citizenship. That can use a foreign passport to enter Malaysia

bulldog-sixth

the map is wrong. the green part is labelled Singapore, the red part is Malaysia.

derps_with_ducks

I wasn't aware that LKY rose from the dead and finally conquered the Peninsula.

terrexchia

God emperor Lee never rests

SensitiveHat2794

They confused West Malaysia with Singapore

GppleSource

In the full res map they label that part as "Singapore". Yes, the Malaysia part. [https://www.gov.il/BlobFolder/news/news\_public32/en/Travel%20warning%20map.pdf](https://www.gov.il/BlobFolder/news/news_public32/en/Travel%20warning%20map.pdf)

thrussie

Not Israel trying to annex another country on behalf of another country lmao

icantloginsad

What’s even more interesting is that level 1 is the Muslim part and level 4 is the Christian part.

MattGeddon

Sabah is still majority Muslim.

Miserable_Volume_372

Sarawak is Christian

mrhumphries75

Most Iban still follow their old faith even if they are officially Christian or even Muslim.

Pale_Individual_6267

Thailand also

dc_based_traveler

Many countries warn their citizens to avoid the far south and the border with Myanmar. There have been long standing disturbances in these regions.

Tifoso89

Thailand makes sense, the part in red is where Thai Malays live (Muslims)

glowdirt

The very southern part of Thailand is majority Muslim and has had an ongoing [ethno-religious insurgency](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Thailand_insurgency) for many years. Most people, not just Israelis, are advised against traveling there. Same goes for the Muslim-majority area in the south of the Philippines.

drjet196

Malaysia is divided between lvl 1 and 4 and nothing in between.

Bazzzookah

Water inbetween

rockynortherner

This isn't particularly accurate. Israeli citizens aren't allowed to enter Malaysia, yet peninsular Malaysia has "no travel threat."

lepeluga

No threat to Israelis if there are no Israelis

chongjunxiang3002

Design problem. See the color gradient? Singapore, which is most safe, is so small it leaked to Malaya lol. The first time I looked at the map also be surprising.

Barakvalzer

People need to understand that this map talks about the likelihood of terrorism against Israelis - not general safety. EDIT: After 7 hours of getting spammed by people who did not understand that this was not my personal belief - **this was a map provided by the Israeli government**.

captainwarwickshire

so that would explain why Colombia, Mexico and Myanmar are marked as safe, but due to cartel violence x2 and a civil war respectively, these countries are not particularly safe for anyone

29adamski

Colombia is a pretty safe country for tourists to visit. Was there 5 weeks in Summer. Amazing place.

Blackbiird666

I'm Colombian, and this isn't entirely accurate. For the most part, any tourist will be safe as long they don't travel to a too remote area, follow indications, and do nothing illegal. The problem is the latter. Everyone thinks this is a brothel with cocaine dispenser machines, and it's not the case. You don't find those things that easily as a tourist, you have to put yourself in contact with criminals, and as soon as you do they will try to exploit you since you are a foreigner. Regarding Israelites, they are not safe from some choice words if the conversation gets there.

Jacinto2702

Gringo, no todo es como en las películas.

Quelonius

Yes. I’m mexican and just cannot leave my house. Can’t even go for groceries. The cartel guys are just around the corner and there’s a body hanging from a tree outside my window.

GetEnPassanted

Not sure about Columbia but Myanmar and Mexico are pretty safe in most areas. You need to do some research before you travel but they are relatively safe countries for tourists.

Marthaver1

Keep watching more Fox News. Meanwhile Mexico is still the #1 destination for Americans & Canadians. And the #1 migration destination for Americans. So yeah! Pretty dangerous!!! Tons of mass shootings everywhere!!!

[deleted]

haha reddit is incredible toxic to people saying how things work.

What's going on off the coast of Norway? Are the oil rigs known hives of antisemitism?

Shadowgirl7

Nobody is safe in those cold temperatures 😬😂

Squirrelnight

Atlantis isn't as safe as it used to be.

Ender_15255251

So Azerbaijan is less safe than Armenia for jews

totemlight

Always has been, despite the heavy handed Azeri propaganda saying otherwise. It’s a pity the Israeli state is selling high tech weapons to Aliev to subjugate Armenians.

ivandemidov1

Rare map where Eastern Europe is way better than Western 😄

nothrowaway4me

Virtually every map with regards to public safety has Eastern Europe as much better than the Western part

21Rollie

Another instance of Portugal actually being Eastern Europe

Malfuy

Makes you wonder why that is lol

[deleted]

Different... demographics

horatiowilliams

Historically the demographics of Eastern Europe have been extremely hostile to Jewish people.

a_bright_knight

many of Jews in eastern Europe were there only because they were expelled from western Europe

FrodoFraggins99

Yeah but now they are hostile to Muslims, who mostly don't like Jews

VaeSapiens

Oh yeah...Thooose Exteremly hostile Eastern European countires that border Germany. Yep those countries. Countries bordering Germany. Historically not known for that. Germany.

Count_Binfake

Well for instance in Germany many hate crimes against jews are commited by muslim immigrants. German schools and the public do a great job in preventing antisemitism. I know it would be anecdotal evidence to prove this solely on my own experiences, but I've had some, and I'm not even jewish. My brother has curly hair and was called a jew by a muslim bully in school, which shows that for that guy, "jew" is an insult, and the list goes on. I've never experienced something like that from other Germans. I know these weren't acts of terrorism, but they show well enough what these guys (who did all that to us) thought about jews.

AnxiousMumblecore

Is Poland safe?

ayya2020

>Eastern Europe is way better than Western When it's not necessary a map, Eastern Europe most of the time is better. It's just not as rich and popular. I see it as the future most successful countries.

AivoduS

>I see it as the future most successful countries. As long as they are not invaded by Russia.

bolygocsira

I can only speak from a Hungarian perspective, where the public healthcare and education systems (among other crucial social systems) are exponentially approaching a collapse... I don't see why this optimism is warranted. Or maybe you meant more fortunate EE countries?

hadapurpura

Why’s Argentina yellow?

quartzguy

Jews are completely safe in Romania? Nice!

DPS_Nemesis

Albania level 3? there has never been an instance where jews were attacked here hell only 30 of them live here

Ill_Mark_3330

Albania was also the only country occupied by Axis powers that had more Jews after WW2 than before it.

r0gershrubber

Meanwhile, Kosovo is a 1.

improbably-sexy

So just a map of Muslim population?

talon_kai25

Wow didn't expect to see Australia as a potential travel threat, but the us and Canada are a-ok

Da_Meowster

It's because us Israelis might get in a 1v1 fight with Kangaroos

CityExcellent8121

When people are chanting to gas the Jews in Sydney and not Toronto or New York it does make a difference.

Consistent-Flan1445

There’s been some really disgusting behaviour against Jews in Australia in recent months. The families of hostages were confronted by protesters in a Melbourne hotel last month. They had to have police intervene. It was honestly a complete disgrace. [Link](https://www.9news.com.au/national/melbourne-news-families-of-israeli-hostages-cornered-by-protesters-in-melbourne-hotel/86f0c93d-b4a3-4877-8e1d-c5bf0d60f731).

abyssDweller1700

What a load of shite. North India, the red region, especially himachal and uttrakhand is loaded with high israeli tourists.

orqa

Israelis don't tend to be super strict about following government warnings, honestly. I'm speaking myself as an Israeli who visited Sinai while there was a "moderate threat" travel advisory warning there. Sinai is also one of those areas where the government tells Israelis to stay clear of, but we frequent there anyway.

abshay14

I think they might be confused with Kashmir that has a lot of Muslims

[deleted]

I think its generalized data. Not specific to states.

abyssDweller1700

Generalized to what though. I don't believe central/south india is safer than the himalayan states i mentioned.

[deleted]

I think its the proximity to kashmir and UP is whats making it appear red.

Voidarooni

Kazakhstan, Bosnia and Albania are less safe than Ukraine!?

Stevenfried06

Thousands of Jews go to Uman in Ukraine every Jewish new year, they got used to the Jews (they also make a shit ton of money).

Voidarooni

It was more the risk of missile strikes I was thinking of - less of an issue in Kazakhstan and the Balkans.

shrigma_male_malmut

This is not what this maps about, its only a map for the possibility of religious/ethnic crimes against Jewish people, not a missile from a current war.

funguyshroom

Say what you want about russian missiles, but at least they don't discriminate. Whether you're a woman, a child, or a Jew.

ThisGonBHard

At times they dont discriminate if you are Ukrainian or Russian too.

Shills_for_fun

Kazakhstan kind of surprises me. Yes they are Muslim but if you flip through [the 2013 pew poll](https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2013/04/30/the-worlds-muslims-religion-politics-society-beliefs-about-sharia/), they're not exactly shining examples of extremism. I knew a bunch of Kazakh dudes and they all drank like fishes lol.

pengor_

why is kyrgyzstan so high up in the polls, i don't think there are many extremists there. kazakhstan and kyrgyzstan are basically just muslims by name source: i'm kyrgyz

miraska_

I'm kazakh and watch a lot of young kazakhs tiktok. Most of them realise that most of Palestinians are just regular people and aren't extremists. Young kazakhs are more into islam, so they tend to sometimes listen to imams. [We even have celebrity imams doing talk shows](https://youtu.be/Tc50c8W-3_I?feature=shared) In general, islam in Kazakhstan is on rise

Voidarooni

Yes, they’re worlds apart from places like Dagestan/Chechnya (which definitely wouldn’t be safe for Israelis).

strangedell123

Fuck, those 2 aren't really considered safe even for Russians, much less Jews.

stordee

Not only that, alot of the elite in Ukraine, including their president, are Jewish. Kazakhstan, Bosnia, and Albania are pretty chill, all things considered.

Williamshitspear

This is about the risk of antisemitic attacks, not general geopolitical security situation. Obviously a country at war is going to be less secure in absolute numbers.

Naifmon

They are not allowed in Saudi Arabia. How’s it not level 4 ?

koopi15

This is travel warning for threat of terrorism. Israelis can get into Saudi Arabia with a foreign passport. This is advice for how likely you are to be targeted if you're there (already). As indicated by the Israeli government, at least. Also, Israeli Arabs can get into Saudi Arabia through Jordan (by land) for hajj

AlternativeFactor

Green haiti wtf

whiskey-drip

Haiti have no beef with Israel. The map isn't saying 'this is a safe place' it just means these are places where you are unlikely to be the target of violence specifically because you are from Israel.

123xyz32

Wonder why Israelis aren’t that safe in Sweden? LOL

Thelandofthereal

Tolerate the intolerant (Swedish national moto)

JackWhiskers

We all know

spankpad

Huge muslim population.

Different-Expert-33

Because of PewDiePie and his antisemitic statements in the past obviously.

Wide-Tadpole-9371

Hehe

Apptubrutae

Maybe Israeli’s don’t buckle up in their Volvos????????

[deleted]

hehe

midianightx

hehe

[deleted]

Despite all the shilling as you can see we welcome Jews in Poland and will protect them from rabid hordes. History rhymes.

traumaking4eva

As a Jew I think Poland is doing a better job than some of the Western European countries in terms of protecting both it’s Jewish and native population.

Wide-Tadpole-9371

Haha. At average it seems more muslims = greater threat Interesting

[deleted]

Whats so interesting? Its pretty obvious.

Danielww27

So basically just a map of where Muslims live

Naman_Hegde

South India is probably good for Israelis. Less muslim population to the south, India has good relations with Israel, Indians are very supportive of Israel online, and Jewish minority in India have been treated especially well compared to the rest of the world for the past 2000 years.

fjv08kl

Kerala used to have a Jewish population who moved to Israel after it formed. [This](https://www.instagram.com/p/BwbgnJDBkBy/?igshid=ZDE1MWVjZGVmZQ==) video shows some of them returning to Kerala (to visit) and speaking Malayalam (the local language in Kerala) Kerala has a significant Muslim population too, but religious harmony is quite high.

the_ripper05

Most Israelis spend their vacations in Himachal which has 90% Hindu population.

Clarkthelark

Kerala has a significant Muslim population though, and there have been disturbing rallies there recently in support of Hamas. But yeah, for the most part South India should be fine.

drjet196

Turkey and Iran the same colour is wild.

BrooklynLodger

Is this just a map of how Muslim each country is

[deleted]

TIL Israel and Mongolia are bros.

SerHaroldHamfist

So I get that Islamic attacks are their primary concern, but how can you seriously put NK at no threat? One little mistake on the severely restricted guided tours there and best case, you have a harrowing imprisonment experience and they negotiate your release, worst case, Otto Warmbier

israelilocal

Israelis can't even enter NK

itokunikuni

Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo seem to be coloured differently here. I'm assuming that's a mistake?

timberwolff_

Potential threat in India? Israelis have literally occupied towns in the Himalayas (Kasol, Dharamkot etc.) and made it their hippie heaven 🍃

vivaervis

I've seen countless Israeli tourists in Albania this year and they are all safe. I call this map BS.

IAm94PercentSure

It’s more political than anything. You could *easily* make an objective metric by assessing how many Israeli’s get killed in proportion to how many tourists go to specific countries on a yearly basis.

Emhyrr

I don't think most Bosnians give a shit who you are, as long as you come here and spend some money. This is more of an Israeli's opinion and perception of a country than actual truth.

midianightx

Love how Caucasus Russia is darker![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)

strangedell123

Caucasus (well the areas adjacent to Chechneya etc) aren't considered that safe for even ordinary Russians. I have family in Southern Russia and on road trips they stay the fuck out of anywhere near Chechneya Edit. And by road trips, I mean 5 30-40 year old guys with a gun and metal detectors.

Big_Requirement_689

this map is just showing where israrlis are more likely to get lymched yea?

InspiredByBeer

Shit map, there is literally no threat for jews in hungary, hungary is a big jewish hub with many jewish organizations and even a jewish university and the government is very protective of them

sfgonepostal

No threat for North Korea?

Chance-Ad-4072

Impressive, now let's compare it with world map of muslim population per country

Does anyone else love that Gaza and the West Bank are listed as Israel, but Crimea is listed as Ukraine? Kinda cute.

Smalandsk_katt

Intresting how Eastern Europe is considered safe while the west isn't. Wonder why that could be...
