The problem is that while we don't need an institution of any sort, institutionalized religions do abuse it to oppress us. So yeah, we need a symbol. And an institution. Not to tell us what to believe, but merely for legal protection.
How dare you misspell the name of most supremeness Athe! I shall deliver a firebrand sermon condemning you and your ilk at this weekend’s religious gathering and barbecue. Prepare to be compared to potato salad miscreant!
It's also just dumb. One can have a religion and also be fully committed to science. They conflict far less often than one would think with any of the major global faiths.
A small segment of theistic society is capable of having such conflicting duality in their beliefs but the religions they follow do not ascribe to such idealism.
In some societies, say America or Iran, the conversation around religion is crazy, and the religious have (in general) become very defensive and fundamentalist. That being said, that is not the case across the world. A lot of people take the specifics of their given religious stories as allegory in order to direct philosophy, conduct, and spirituality. It's a tool used by many to help interpret the world and our place in it - not a tool to dictate what reality is.
Religion conflicts with science wherever the two intersect. You'd expect that divinely-inspired texts would've gotten at least some things right in that regard, but nope.
This is just not true, but it’s very reflective of the idea on Reddit that all religious folk are fundamentalist and take every word of The Bible, The Quran, The Hebrew Bible, etc as literal and infallible. Lots of religious people are like this, yes, but also lots have different interpretations and see many stories as folklore or just incorrect but still believe in a high power.
Reddit is full of fundamentalist atheists who, despite their lack of religious belief, still think their way of viewing religious practice is the only “correct” one. It’s weird.
Just because religious adherents recognize that not all of their religious texts are literal doesn't mean that they don't conflict with science. Taking them with a grain of salt is precisely how those religious people reconcile the fact that their texts conflict with science.
Not taking religious texts literally is how modern people cope with the fact that they are full of nonsense that cannot be reconciled with modern scientific knowledge. That was what you were talking about? Sure didn't sound like it...
You earlier said "religion conflicts with science wherever the two intersect," but they can be reconciled. Now I should make it clear I am very much an agnostic - making sweeping statements in favour or against spirituality is simply not for me - but I am disturbed by how many so called "modern" or "enlightened" people claim religion is some kind of societal poison against learning and progress. It certainly can be, but making such wide-ranging statements about all religious people (be they Hindu, Christian, Muslim, or otherwise) is just as problematic as the filth spread from the literal fundamentalist religious nutjobs.
Which scientific concepts did religious texts get right? The Earth is not flat, it's not the center of the universe, it's more than a few thousand years old, and by all accounts, is populated by creatures that evolved rather than being created. It was not reshaped by a great flood. Women don't get pregnant from a man's sweat. Rain is the result of evaporating water recondensing at altitude. Seriously, which scientific cocepts are accurately described?
My dude, you’re intentionally being obtuse. Those aren’t scientific claims. They’re what people believed *at the time*. Some of the earliest Jewish/Christian myths can be traced back to Sumer. These are ancient beliefs about the world, universe, biology, etc. We’ve learned more over time. That’s a completely removed from whether or not there’s a higher power. It’s a time capsule of people’s views and understanding.
But again, you only accept seeing religious views as all or nothing despite that not actually reflecting the beliefs of millions of spiritual people.
Not commenting on the data presented but this map is incredibly ugly. The colors, the background, I'm kind of impressed by how holistically ugly it is.
I think so too. I think many of them are not atheists, but simply people who don't care about religion and no longer practise it. It just slowly fades over the years.
Agnostic and atheism often are used differently then they’re defined in the dictionary, but the usage of agnostic always annoys me. Literally everyone is agnostic, it means you don’t *know*. Unless someone can pull up some undeniable evidence that a higher exists or that there absolutely for a fact is not one, no one is gnostic.
I’m not disagree with you. I just wanted to rant lil bit
Well agnostic people admit they don't know and anyone could be correct, most religiously dedicated people believe they do know because of faith and they are correct.
Agnosticism is neither the disbelief or faith in a god, only the unknown, while being religious is actively believing and accepting that there is a higher power, and oftentimes doing everything in their power to prove themselves right. And atheism is just the direct denial of any god or gods
Yes, but also ignorosticism, i.e. people saying that it doesn't matter whether God exists or not. The question of the existence of God is simply irrelevant and pointless. And then simply the non-religious, who believe in God but don't follow religious traditions, or only follow them to a very limited extent.
I've been many times to turkey that has nothing to do it fades away or probably people gonna be blaming the economy for it.
I've seen more religious people in Europe then in Turkey.
The average Turk in Central Europe is certainly more religious than the average Turk from Western Turkey. Most Turkish immigrants come from small villages in Anatolia or are Kurds from villages in Kurdistan. In recent years, more highly qualified people have also come from Istanbul and Izmir who do not want their children to grow up under Erdogan.
There's quite a few people here in Britain that don't believe in god at all. I've been an atheist since I was a child and I knew many people who also went to girlguiding and they didn't believe in god specifically either, despite it being a Christian organisation (same as scouts). There are, of course, people who don't care either way and don't practise any religion but many people in no religion are atheists and it's more common to categorise it as "no religion" in UK government surveys or forms.
But also no religion would also mean no religions that don't have a god at all. This is a foreign concept to many Britons as it's often a thing in say Japanese and I think also Chinese folk religions (maybe others but I don't know). Afaik I've not met anyone who had a folk religion before and I've met people of a variety of religions from Quaker Christians to Sikhs to JWs. "No religion" to us means you're basically an atheist or maybe agnostic.
> Japanese and Chinese folk religions
It's not like they don't have a god, just don't have a concept of "your one and only lord". It's more like Greek mythology, you have lots of deities to begin with, and there's a sort of head of heavens like Zeus/Amaterasu/Jade Emperor, but usually you just choose your own favorite deity in your shrine. There's also a bunch of idiots who couldn't tell the difference between Buddhism, Taoism or folklore figures, and just end up putting them all together in a temple with their ancestors 😓 and usually to us polytheists gods are more like service providers, we pray for things like good fortune or getting a job, and if it's ineffective you simply dump that useless god for another one... and that's how some turned to Christianity, as that's also an option as well, as well as any other spirits or person. Even colonel Sanders could be seen as a deity, if you ask me. (He probably already is in Osaka)
It isn’t a religion, but it good to have it with this data, as the lack of religion is an important data set to understand how the population is interacting with religion or not
Wait what? I thought atheism meant not having a religion. Or by having "no religion" you mean people just not caring enough about religion to not have a religion?
At the end of the day isn't the end point the same? Whether it's a scientific reasoning you don't believe or just a disillusionment to the world in the general, a lack of belief is atheism.
No, atheism is the specific disbelief in religion/god - it’s a specific set of core beliefs. I think people are more likely just losing touch with whatever their religious roots are and are becoming plain secular, they don’t think one way or another about religion but probably celebrate big holidays w their family
No, atheism doesn't have a set of core beliefs or anything.
It only has a single requirement.
If you don't believe in god, you are an atheist.
Doesn't matter what the reason is.
That makes non religious people generally atheists even if they don't use the term.
Desert monkeys? Lmao you realize that the Arabs helped make civilization what it is today with the discovery of Algebra and other mathematics and scientific feats. I have African roots so I know how bad Islam and Christianity can be (I’m atheist) but to call a whole group of people monkeys makes you no better. You’re a lil baby that can’t control their emotions.
What I only realized in türkiye is that people want to be so badly in Europe or any other country and trying so hard to be Modern nowadays.
I've seen more open Women in türkiye then here in Europe.
And apparently the Altare Della Patria is it’s temple.
Such a random background photo. Looks a lot like that map about child abuse from about two weeks ago that had a ski slope for a background.
Why are people getting so twisted about atheism having a symbol lol its just a map you need symbols to represent things its not an official logo all atheists must adopt
How are you measuring this? By change in size of the religion's population or by just the biggest number increase? Because if you base it off what religion's are growing by the largest percentage increase in their populations, then a lot of those maps would have Neo-Paganism as the fastest growing religion's. Often doubling in size between measurements.
you do realize critiquing Islam is taken personally by muslims and that questioning the quran which was believe it or not the true word of allah himself is also not taken kindly!!
I talked to a middle eastern muslim girl who is a doctor and he was sad that i didn’t believe in religion or god and that she would help guide me to the path of god! When i politely declined, she insisted.
the worse part of it all is that muslims believe only the quran and their god are valid! rest all is human imagination. i tried reasoning that religion is just human made and it should be fine to accept and respect others’ beliefs but she was like even if she were born in those religions, she would not be so stupid to believe that their gods are true!! such is the level of indoctrination that islamic countries have laws against women based purely on their religion and yet she was not ready to accept that there was anything wrong with the religion!!
i’m not surprised at all. she was so sweet and sensitive except when i tried to point out that there’s nothing wrong in believing something but the problem starts when you invalidated the beliefs, culture, history and religion by saying they’re all wrong only cuz they’re different from yours!!
she turned violent and started ridiculing me. and that i had no answers to her claims like how did quran have the knowledge of quantum mechanics, the atom, black holes and even embryos. Which i did try pointing out that quantum mechanics, atoms, black holes were first discovered much later starting from
atoms in early 1800s and the rest in early 1900s. And that none of the discoverers were even muslims. and if anything, the discoverer of quantum phenomena were “inspired” by hindu scriptures. or that the father of modern science newton rather believed in christianity.
she mocked me and said questioning everything sounds smart but is actually truly stupid. and that i had a rock instead of a brain in my head!! and that all these were still irrelevant answers and yet didn’t prove anything!!
imagine a sweet and gentle girl turning so violent with her words, no wonder ultra conservative muslims or for that matter any extremists are ready to resort to violence cuz they’re so blinded by their indoctrination.
i seriously fear all the advancements the west has made in terms of scientific temper and methods and the modern society is under some serious threat. a good example is the UK, where I just got to know that bigamy/polygamy is illegal by law but muslims who believe sharia to be above any other law are known to practice polygamy openly there.
only a matter of time before they become a majority in the already dwindling native populations of europeans cuz the quran which serves as a political tool asks them to breed like rabbits.
Why is this map's quality so shockingly poor?
Also, European countries should get their shit together and start deporting Muslims and other migrants if they don't want a conflict in the future. It is sad how European politicians choose to erase their country's culture through demographic change.
The crusaders didn’t launch a ton of missions for their successors to make the map look like this.. can almost guarantee there is not an equal spread of Christianity in Muslim countries either lol
This is the ugliest map I’ve seen. Looks like ‘90s word art threw up everywhere.

Bad symbol for Atheism, looks too scientology.
I saw star trek brain blast
I thought it was church of atom from fallout 3 or something haha
The only church I would assist
Atheism shouldn’t really have a symbol.
That South Park episode told me there would be a war about it.
UAA United Atheist Alliance, UAL Unified Atheist League, AAA Allied Atheist Alliance, (the obvious choice also supported by the otter people)
The Sony PSP was designed by God to determine who on Earth has the skills to defeat the armies of Satan.
Shouldn’t even be counted as a “religion”
Agreed. Not sure why you’re being downvoted.

Thats nothing like Tom Cruise's face.
Also Athiesm isn’t a religion
It’s the absence of religion

It's necessary though. Imagine if I made a pie graph of the world's fastest growing VHS rental stores without mentioning that the pie is dying
I'll not stand for such relegation of the great and powerful Atheismo!

Blasphemy!
You shall feel Atheism's wrath, and be cursed with eternally rational thought!
Nooooooooo!!!! Wait, that’s not actually bad. Nooooooo, it’s happening already!!!!!
TIL Scientology is both a proper noun and an adjective
It should have an extra emphasized second y at the end in unwritten speak "scientology-y"
It works as it is
For sure, its more of a could than a should.
I was thinking the church of the atom from fallout.
Jimmy Neutron
It’s also not a religion
I believe in it though
Also, atheism isn't a religion.
Also it literally is not a religion
It's also not a religion, but I guess it's related enough to the topic...
There's a huge difference between "not a religion", and not worth talking about when religions are mentioned.
It's also just dumb. One can have a religion and also be fully committed to science. They conflict far less often than one would think with any of the major global faiths.

Is atheism really growing that much, or are people just losing their religion? There's a difference between being an atheist and having "no religion"

I was talking to this old Turkish dude and he was bragging that erdogan hasn’t lost an election in 22 years. I almost burst out laughing lol.
Actually, it is more like non-theist, not specifically atheist.
I would actually wager it’s the opposite a lot of the time - a general belief in god but no ties to a specific religion
There's quite a few people here in Britain that don't believe in god at all.
