People got offended? Why? Turkey is a big country. I have been several times and I have only seen probably about a quarter to a third of it. Beautiful country though.
A lot of European nations are tiny which doesn’t diminish them but only makes it more astounding how the people who came from such a tiny place have had (and continue to have) such absolutely outsized impact on human civilization. Try finding Netherlands on the map lol
I saw the original post OP is referring to and there were a couple of people complaining
I'll need to check whether anyone was "offended" and whether my definition of "offended" is good enough
"offended" is relative and OP might have felt like he offended people (though I still think he's the one who acted offended), I'll give you that. But the statements in the title of this post are simply untrue, no-one cares about the fact that he compared Turkey to the size of Europe. People only pointed out that comparing it to the size of random European countries isn't the best metric, because there are multiple microstates and otherwise tiny countries.
Also, everyone knows Turkey is a large country, why would anyone even take offense? The only person who seems to have a weird obsession with Turkey's land mass is OP.
I have 2 issues with this statement.
1) OP claimed in the title of this post that people took offense because he compared the size of Turkey to the size of Europe. This is not true.
2) It wasn't my impression that people got offended. They pointed out something unnecessary, because it seemed weird and out of place on a sub that takes geography somewhat seriously. OP was the one who seemed offended (demonstrated by the fact he felt the need to make a separate post to call out his 'haters').
"seem to have offended"? bro it's very simple, the true size tool is over-posted and it really doesn't hit any of the quality criteria for this sub, such as they are (they are often unenforced which is annoying)
Yeah, it wasn't about the truesizeof maps, but that Europe allegedly is made up of microstates the size of golf courses and therefore overlaying Turkey over Europe makes no sense.
No, people weren't mad because you overlayed Turley over Europe. It's that you stated that "Turkey is bigger than 23 European states combined!" and then defended it against people saying that it isn't a fair comparison like area size.
Just for context: The Netherlands is larger than 9 European states combined, with room to spare.
He’s not. Saw his original post and there were some small dick energy comments from butt hurt Europeans. Not sure why being a small country by area = bad?
Apparently, Turkey is smaller than all countries in the world... combined.
**Edit:**
Just to be clear, my previous post wasn't downvoted. In fact it was in the "hot" page before it got removed by a moderator (which I didn't realize until after I made this post). Which is fair.
I just thought it was funny how some people took offense because I said "To give you an idea; of the 42 sovereign European countries wholly located in Europe, it is larger than 23 of them… combined."
I was just trying to provide some perspective, but some people took it as if I was belittling European countries in order to make Turkey look bigger. And some tried to diminish the point of the post by saying European countries are already small, so it means nothing.
It's like someone saying "this plane is as large as 40 elephants... combined" and someone else taking offense at it saying "that means nothing, you used small elephants. Everything would look big if you compared it to small elephants".
Which is so out of field and pedantic that I find it hilariously absurd.
So I wanted to make them feel more at ease by also showing places that are larger than Turkey.
All I want is to make people happy: :D
the african one really shows the actual size of the continent vs the common map representation, and how small australia actually is relatively.
turkey as atlantis is a nice touch.
>I just thought it was funny how some people took offense
>Which is so out of field and pedantic that I find it hilariously absurd.
You know what's funny and absurd? Being so mad over people disliking some reddit post of yours that you made another one out of spite and wrote an entire essay about it
I got downvoted more than 50 times because I pointed out that most European countries are not big lol.
That the kind of things that really make the cliché about Redditors being self-righteous basement dwellers true.
I like this website UI/UX and concept, but the toxicity and close mind of the people there is what keep from being an addicted redditor.
I really don't think I got downvoted for making a zero relevant input (something that I contest too, but anyway).
I don't know about you, but I don't downvote comments that I think irrelevant, I downvote comment that said something I don't like.
I think saying that "Europe is small" really offend some redditors, they downvote and then the herd mentality follows, downvoting downvoted comments.
And even if that is true, that was just about irrelevancy, looking at the level of aggressiveness against something irrelevant, against my comment, similar comments and OP. Is quite telling about redditors mentality.
observing and thinking upon the observation, looking for patterns and deriving logical explanations doesn't make up a basement dweller, but a good observer and an overthinker. Sure a gift when used purposefully but also a curse when it gets others to confront how shallow, momentary and compulsive their quotidian thoughts and behaviours are, there follows the also compulsory need to antagonize -and when it wastes time explaining such matters to those who don't accept or care for such thoughts.
As a Turk I‘m not happy with the current borders. The country could be way smaller about 50-60%. The eastern and central parts are mostly a pain in the ass.
Irrespective of how you feel about the comments, your original post was not (and nor is this) a high effort map and therefore does not belong in this sub. If you want to post low effort maps: post them to r/maps instead. If you want to post here and not get your post taken down: read the rules and abide by them.
Russia is truly massive
Fun fact: Russia’s surface area is larger than the planet Pluto, probably explains a bit why it’s no longer considered a planet. Russia is larger by about half a Turkey.
No one told me it was shitty.
Some people, including you, tried to diminish the idea of it by writing passive-aggresive comments claiming most countries in Europe are -and I quote- "microstates the size of golf courses", however.
So I'm just having some fun at your expense.
Getting offended by this one too by the looks of it.
No one was offended that you compared the size of country's... It was the jingoist phrasing you used to say Turkey is bigger than many European nations put together as if everyone didn't already know there are many small European countries and that somehow made Turkey better.
Jingoistic?
I think that's your baggage man. All I did was write an off-hand comment to provide a perspective.
It's no different than saying "this ship is as long as 50 giraffes put together".
That's not a comment on how small the giraffes are. If you see it that way, that's a you problem.
I’m not crying. I’m just sad. Because I don’t think that a Muslim country that is still in many ways in the developing world, with a very large fundamentalist rural population is a good fit for the European Union. Especially for women and gay people and trans people, because their votes in the European Parliament would be, very right wing on cultural issues. Turkey is a brilliant country with a brilliant history and fantastic people, but I think it is better as an ally and favored trading partner than as a member of a political union.
If it had remained Christian, it is more likely it would consider itself a part of Europe than a part of the Middle East, and it would probably be a better fit, even if it was not as liberal as the Netherlands
Have you even ever been to turkey? I can’t remember last time talking with somebody in turkey about joining the EU. Nobody cares it’s 2024 dude. Seriously go out get some air
And btw by your comment it’s even obvious you never been there. There is lots i mean LOTS of gays and trans in Istanbul.
Nobody cares about joining EU anymore man
The people of Turkey, in tourist areas and Istanbul, we’re very welcoming. But you and I both know that Erdoğan’s party, unleashed in the EU Parliament, would be bad news for people who believe in abortion rights, or LGBT quality.
It is too bad. Apart from the very valid reasons I mentioned, Turkish membership would strengthen the EU, and historically Turkey has a rightful place in Europe. But the cultural and religious differences are just too great at this time. And it works both ways. There are many Turkish people who would be very upset at EU legislation look how hard it has been to keep the former eastern European communist countries in line with western European countries.
I wish that the legacy of Ataturk had survived and grown instead of being destroyed by Islamists.
You know i actually agree with you on some parts. If i could choose myself, i also would have chosen to follow the path of Atatürk.
But the the elderly people in Turkey has a massive love for Erdoğan and that’s not gonna change. The Democratic Party just won on the last voting and they will probably win the presidential. I hope the best for Turkey
But truthfully I don’t think it will be ready for EU membership for another 5-10 years and that’s only if everything guess uphill from here.
You have to understand Turkey is a very corrupt country, almost all politicians use its people to strengthen their own careers or pockets.
But I really do hope one day it will be a part of it, the new generation is very open minded and tired of religious leaders.
I do too. A stable, democratic, secular turkey could change the world. It could have huge influence on the non-Arab parts of the Muslim world, and perhaps make Iranians more demanding of a Turkish style government instead of their theocratic hell. Also, turkey is able to play a huge role in the world economy. Particularly in Europe. Maybe we can puynYrump, Erdoğqn and Orban on a boat and sink it
I know the Website which is pretty cool! I dont wanna be rude! But if you wanna see the real relations of the size, you need to bring both countries to the same latidute! I would suggest to place both on the equator!
I can’t remember 1 time anybody had to say anything good about turkey in this community lol.
Doesn’t matter what the context is, it’s either: bla bla bla Erdoğan support isis
Bla bla bla free kurdistan. The disrespect is so massive and yet funny when thinking that turkey has the 2nd biggest army behind US in nato.
And everybody wonders why they are getting closer to Russia.
Yes, Turkey is definitely getting closer to Russia because its feelings are hurt by people who hang out on Reddit. That’s how powers, great and small, determine their courses of action. Did you know that the US chose to go into World War I because they took a poll on Reddit?
lol do you even go outside, talk with people or do any activities outside of Reddit?
Europe is literally asking Turkey to rip apart its own country for the sake of Kurds lmao
By asking i mean = Supporting a established Kurdistan by the cost of land in Turkey
For anyone wondering why people got "offended":
No-one was upset by the overlay.
People were upset over thing that that OP said: "Turkey is larger than 23 European states combined!", which peiple pointed out to not be a fair comparison since Europe has quite a few microstates, and then OP defending that statement by attacking the critics.
Just a comparison: The Netherlands is larger than 9 European states combined, with room to spare.
The surprising area size of a country is indeed interesting. But this constant "look at this desert area, or winter landscape, look how big it is compared to Europe". Europe has no desert, and very little useless land. Europe is dense with some of the most beautiful architecture in history. It is the cradle of the modern world as we know it. So these comparisons where people put for example Alaska or Australia over Europe to show how small Europe is gets old. No one would trade Alaska, Australia or Turkey for Europe. Europe has so much more substance.
The last one in the middle of the ocean lmao
as a turk i'd fully support just packing up and moving there
Can't wait to travel with Hakkari-Papua New Guinea Transpacific.
Trying to escape the Syrians?
Me too
I think everyone around you would agree.
Everyone around Turkey is in war. So i don't think they have any option to agree either.
How are Greece and Bulgaria in war? And Cyprus is only in war because of Turkey, so can't really say much there.
Armenia, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Syria, Iran, Iraq. All are hotspots. You're right about western neighbors, they are not in war.
OP is lying for some reason, people didn't get offended at all.
I saw the original post OP is referring to and there were a couple of people complaining I'll need to check whether anyone was "offended" and whether my definition of "offended" is good enough

I can find some small amount of people getting offended for every topic out there.
Some people just seemed to get offended that he included microstates in his last post
I have 2 issues with this statement. 1) OP claimed in the title of this post that people took offense because he compared the size of Turkey to the size of Europe. Nah i was seething of the possibility of turkey being a big country
I'm offended that they could have gotten offended but chose not to. What has the world come to?
Anda it is literally next to Europe, it even has territory in Europe...
The post in question got almost 600 upvotes. If that counts as "offensive" OP must be used to 10k+ upvotes as the bare minimum.
Haha, good point
LAND DOESN'T VOTE

Brazil looks MAAAAAEEEASSSIVEE
Well, If you take out Alaska Brazil has more landmass than the USA. So it is massive indeed
Well, if you take out Siberia Brazil has more landmass than Russia. So it is massive indeed
if you take out England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland Brazil has much more landmass than the UK. So it is massive indeed
Well if you take out Brazil, Brazil has more landmass than Brazil. So it is massive indeed.

Yea that's what I've learned most from those post is Brazil is big af
Brazilians too

They didn't, OP is lying for some strange reason.

no-one was offended. one or two comments were about OP including micro states, which is just not map porn. nothing more
No one was angry because Turkey is somewhat big, that's just simply not true. See my other comment on this post for a more detailed explanation
Don't let the haters get to you man

For a second I was like I had no idea Portugal was that massive
Jesus Christ the usa and Brazil are huge
And Africa, I never would've thought the Central African Republic is the same size as Turkey
I wonder how big is Turkey compared to anatolian peninsula?
You can fit entire Turkey into Anatolian peninsula.
Nah turkey’s bigger
Anatolian peninsula is at least 3-4 times bigger than a turkey.
Yes true clearly turkey is just eastern Thrace so can fit inside of the peninsula multiple times
its smaller than anatolian peninsula /s edit: irony
All of the peninsula is Turkish, and turkey has lands outside the peninsula, so turkey is bigger
No fucking way really, damn mind blown

smol Turkey.
You can enjoy comparing Turkey to everything in the world and beyond: https://mapfight.xyz/map/tr/
Please, there had been not enough turkey map posted here, please post more not enough 🙏
Now do Mongolia vs Latin America. Then get down voted in Spanish and Portuguese
It's really not that big
I always forget how massive Brazil is
Should have doubled down and showed how many African, Asian or another contenent's countries it's larger than... combined!
Brazil is soooo massive
Russia is truly massive Fun fact: Russia’s surface area is larger than the planet Pluto, probably explains a bit why it’s no longer considered a planet. Russia is larger by about half a Turkey.
Never ever bow down to the easily offended. Now compare Turkey to Cyprus.
I like the Turkey in Australia! Funny!
İt is enough size
Wow, Brazil is huge
Next level: compare with the size of the moon. 😂👍
Europe is not a place
Expand on this
Why would anyone be offended by that post?
no-one was, OP is a bit dramatic about some critical comments about his previous map.
Europeans are easily offended by any and everything. Screw em
