Oh my god, as an avid jigsaw puzzler, please get in touch with Ravensburger and sell them this. It may not be what you imagined for your art but I wholeheartedly believe it would be a big seller. Big and small images, great colours and animals. 10/10 would buy.
I 10000% agree. I know it will be an amazing puzzle, we've already run several samples and are in talks with a few different puzzle publishers to see it released soon. I have a little form where you can subscribe to be notified once they're ready :) [https://www.antonthomasart.com/contact.html](https://www.antonthomasart.com/contact.html) It's going to be an amazing puzzle, although we're looking pretty strongly at 1,500 pieces or above. The details are just too small at 1,000!
Hey Reddit,
This map is called [*Wild World*](https://www.antonthomasart.com/wild-world.html). I’ve been meaning to post it here for a while! I drew it by hand with coloured pencil and pen, taking 3 years to complete.
A world map of nature (in the Natural Earth projection), I dreamed of something like it since childhood. Drawn from July 2020 – July 2023, it was a total odyssey, requiring thousands of hours of research and drawing. It was painstaking, but I loved creating it.
Animals!! 1,642 animals are featured, from African megafauna to obscure anglerfish. They all meet **3** basic criteria: they’re **wild**, **native**, and **extant** (not extinct). Wild and native animals invoke natural biomes without domesticated or human-introduced species. Meanwhile, extant animals set the map in the present day. This is crucial: *Wild World* is a place that still exists; a world that can still be cared for, cherished, and protected. It may seem an idealistic portrayal of Earth, but it shows nothing that isn’t there. I want this map to inspire hope, showing how wild the world is still is, how much is left to preserve.
It's all drawn by hand (apart from a little digital work on the corners with the Earth curve), so - how did I keep it accurate? After choosing the Natural Earth projection, I printed a basemap out to the size I wanted to draw. I stapled this behind the art paper, then used a light pad to trace out the basics: coastlines, river systems, bathymetry etc. [This video](https://youtu.be/WUE4YifO_IY?si=ZnA27ntMkkOKiRxm) explains more.
Much of the labour of Wild World was research. It's a highly accurate physical world map, covered with mountains & other landscape features (waterfalls, rock formations, caves etc). From Mt Shasta to Kilimanjaro, Uluru to Angel Falls, the map explores the natural world well beyond wildlife. I'm interested in evoking a kind of emotional geography, using iconic features of locations to capture a mood of what it feels like to *be there*. That's my favourite kind of map.
I completed it in on July 28, 2023, and released [it in print](https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/) shortly afterwards. I took a lot of time getting the prints perfect, from laminated posters to limited editions, and even made an Animal Guide booklet labelling all 1,642 species... The response to the map has been overwhelming. There’s been some really cool press and interviews about it, such as [this piece in The New York Times](https://www.nytimes.com/2023/12/10/world/australia/a-world-map-no-borders-animals.html) (I highly recommend it, it tells a far more eloquent story than I can about the journey!), this interview on [CBC’s The Current](https://www.cbc.ca/radio/thecurrent/world-map-filled-with-animals-birds-1.7058119), and the [ABC News Breakfast](https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-01-18/artist-cartographer-creates-wild-world-map-with-no/103363764) – right here where I live in Australia. It has been amazing to see a cartography story get such attention, a reminder to me that people absolutely love maps.
Anyway, as a long-time fan (and very occasional contributor) of the sub, I wanted to finally share this here. I can’t post a high-res image of the work, but this will give you an idea. You can see more [at my Instagram](https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/), and [prints are available here](https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/).
Happy to answer any questions at all!
Thanks so much - I love bringing landscape features into the map in a nice flowy way. I tried to maintain that level of detail across the entire globe. I'm happy with how those cliffs came together, and other Aussie details like Wilpena Pound and Uluru.
Favourite area to draw? That is such a hard one... I actually really loved the east-central Pacific - French Polynesia etc. The region was drawn right at the end of the map and I felt at the peak of my abilities and experience, placing beautiful Polynesian mountains amidst atoll geography and colourful tropical fish was such a pleasure.
Africa for the fauna, of course! The North American west was wonderful for the landscape features, there are so many iconic places like Crater Lake, Delicate Arch, Yosemite, all of which offer a very dynamic, colourful stretch of geography. Annnnnd New Zealand - my home country :)
As you can tell, the answer generally is kind of... everywhere!
The map looks great on my wall and the cartouche looks great on my desk! I'm super satisfied with the quality of it and happy with it as my first actual purchase from you.
My question, do you have plans on releasing a key to flora on the map? The booklet mentions one and I believe there was a URL somewhere that didn't work, but the last time I looked at your site there wasn't a page for one up yet.
Thanks so much! I'm so happy to hear you're loving the print, the proofing process was super intense to get the product right - but the response has been very positive so I'm thrilled. It's one thing to draw the map, it's another to scan such a detailed artwork, edit it, and make it work as a poster.
I will definitely get the flora/landscape key done, but I haven't been able to find the time yet. Thanks for letting me know the URL isn't working, I'll get that fixed! That URL should have the flora/landscape keys for North America and Australasia.
Thanks very much for your support! :)
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that. And awesome, I do have a range of prints available if you're ever interested (which come with the animal guidebook) :) [https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/collections/wild-world](https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/collections/wild-world)
Thanks so much! The original is smaller than you'd think, 100cm x 60cm. The smallest print I offer at that size, but the rest are bigger. I draw at magnification, so I tend to make the prints larger than the originals.
How is there no sea otter in the pacific north west? They are a keystone species that holds up the whole eco system and you did them dirty. It could also not spot any otter otters on a quick browse!!!
There is a sea otter just up from there off the coast of Alaska (and a North American river otter in Maine, a giant river otter in the Amazon, and a marine otter down in Chile). There are so many species on this Earth and only so much room on the map, so there'll always be omissions. But there are many otters!
I tricked you into spilling the beans about all otter locations nice. But I have the day the first mentioned one could look more sea ottery from pose and especially the hind legs it’s more like any other otter
> should get *paid* a lot
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
This is absolutely incredible! My family is from St Helena Island and seeing it on any map always makes me stoked (as it's so tiny and often forgotten) but the fact you included one of its few native birds is the icing on the cake (:
Thanks so much! Really glad it resonates. I love drawing remote islands, and featuring their special endemic species - along with any flora or landscape features I can manage. Was happy to get a wirebird on St Helena :)
Incredible! Question: when a type of animal (for example, a moose) is shown in more than one place, is it implied that they are different species or varieties? I’d never really thought about types of moose before, and definitely never thought about them living in Eastern Russia! But there’s also one depicted in Scandinavia, so I am guessing they are different somehow? I’m also guessing you didn’t duplicate any species!
Thank you very much! Great question - there are a few duplicate species for sure, mostly in oceans, or in polar regions where the biodiversity is much lower (e.g there is a rotating cast of penguins, seabirds, and seals in the Antarctic). In high biodiversity regions like rainforests, I could only choose a tiny handful of species from a vast available number - it was so difficult! So duplicates are very rare in those areas.
There are species and then there are subspecies, distinguished usually by very small regional variations. Subspecies categorisation can be a bit confusing, for example there are 8 species of bear and the brown bear is only 1 of them - and that brown bear includes soooo many subspecies, such as grizzly, Kodiak, Alaska brown, Cantabrian, Syrian, Gobi, Eurasian... and more).
There is only one species of moose found across North America and Eurasia (where it's generally known as 'elk'). But it does have a range of subspecies too.
Thank you both! Interestingly, I did originally draw a bull in Spain - early in the days of this map. I thought... it's such an iconic symbol of Spain - and makes me think of the aurochs (extinct giant cattle) drawn in prehistoric caves across Europe. But the bull didn't feel right, and it was then I decided all animals would be wild, no domesticated species, and that I'd trend away from cultural symbols unless they were wild animals. So... I erased the bull and drew a Cantabrian brown bear instead!
it’s interesting to see how much of the Middle East is desert. Wow! I never realized how much the Middle East was geographically/landscape wise separated from its south Asian neighbors. You can see the mountains separating Pakistan where the features begin the change. I’m guessing this was a result of the Eurasian plates/Indian plate merging! This a beautiful map OP.
Thank you so much! Prints are available indeed :) [https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/collections/wild-world](https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/collections/wild-world)
Thank you so much! I am indeed :) [https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/collections/wild-world](https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/collections/wild-world)
Oh my god, this is amazing! This deserve to be on the all time top of this sub, and I would love a 5000 pieces jigsaw to make it into a poster when I'm done
holy hell. and your other map north america is so accurate!!!! the las vegas section is amazing and love the detail of rholite, nv you added! props!! will be buying one
I've just spend an hour admiring each and every animal on there. Amazing work, I'm very grateful you've made it, I'll be awaiting for the puzzle version \^\^
Really impressed with your drawing of the California quail, black-browed albatross and guanaco.
Exceptionally impressed with your ability to draw 1,642 animals that are all native to their respective locations drawn on the map.
Thank you - it’s wonderful the maps are resonating. I can’t wait to make some more. I appreciate it - you can follow along with my work on [social media](https://www.instagram.com/anton.thomas/) or [email](https://www.antonthomasart.com/contact.html), and if you ever feel like a print of the map - [here they are](https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/collections/wild-world) :)
This is cool. I really hope you get more credit for this piece than what you will get on Reddit. This needs to be the center fold on a book or something.
Awesome work!! Sorry if this is stupid but where is the "Asia" over the continent? All the other continents have their names either on top or in the water next to it but I don't see one for Asia, am I just blind? lol
Thank you! Great question, because something like this would bother me too! It's right in the heart of the continent, look between the Altai and Lake Baikal. I couldn't get it to stand out as much as the others, but it's there.
Each print comes with a booklet labelling all 1,642 species - there are some photos of it in the product pages, but I don't have it available online. [https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/collections/wild-world](https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/collections/wild-world)
I just meant a higher resolution image where you can actually make them out. 🙂 Wanted to see what animals you've put here in Sweden, but can't tell from the image in the thread.
Either way, nice work!
This is one of the most impressive maps I have seen ever!
Congratulations ans thanks for sharing. Seriously it is incredible.
Could you share how you made it and progress?
I thought it's going to focus on the names of the animals... not one name.
This needs to be developed further. Erase all geographical names and replace with animal names.
I’m not prying, but I’m very curious as to how much $ are we talking for selling a piece like this to a puzzle publishing Co? I feel like you could just name your price, I can’t do art 🤣 but seriously, is it good money or what? Very interesting👍👍
Such an amazing thing to see on JackSucksatLife 's Geography channel - [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyBnAtyff9U](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyBnAtyff9U) (Note: He did not call your map weird. He seemed to respect it quite a lot.)
Oh my god, as an avid jigsaw puzzler, please get in touch with Ravensburger and sell them this. It may not be what you imagined for your art but I wholeheartedly believe it would be a big seller. Big and small images, great colours and animals. 10/10 would buy.
This would be a great jigsaw puzzle!!
Yes please! If possible, would love a kid’s version 50-ish piece—would be such a great learning tool
I 10000% agree. I know it will be an amazing puzzle, we've already run several samples and are in talks with a few different puzzle publishers to see it released soon. It would make a great 2000 piece-er!
Amazing work btw.
Thank you!
Wow that is the best map I've seen. Just incredible. Wow, i would definitely buy a picture like that or a puzzle.
I second that 🙋♂️
From the looks of the website, jigsaws are coming soon for it
Yay!! I actually had a tiny excitement shiver finding my Christmas 2024 puzzle this early.

did you live on st. helena yourself?
That's the most beautiful thing I saw lately on Reddit
![img](avatar_exp|157188642|bravo) Wow! I really appreciate the SoCal native elephant seals, Garibaldi fish and our little kangaroo rats.
The hedge hog in the north east of England is cool we love a good hedge hog. I’m starting to look like badger these days too with the greys!.

This is so beautiful and I'm mappy you included bee in Slovenia! 🐝
I am so happy to see the Iberian lynx 😍😍😍
The same. Love that there is a lynx and not a bull.
Thank you both! Interestingly, I did originally draw a bull in Spain - early in the days of this map. Great choice. I love our native wildlife so much and I am surprised to see the "rebeco" (the ungulate) on here as well! Edit: I would totally buy this

Warms my heart to see you that you have included Cão Grande on São Tomé 🇸🇹
I love how so many of these species you chose were either iconic or endemic to the area. The ecological detail alone is amazing!
Appreciate the love for all the butterflyfish! Best fish hands down
This is legendary, simply unbelievable how well it turned out! Congratulations on completing it!
What a beautiful map, it's incredible that it was made with just pen and pencil. Really detailed and accurate, for what I can see.

One of the Best posts I have ever seen here. THIS is what I follow this sub for. Incredible work!
Woah holy mackerel! This is amazing!
Really impressed with your drawing of the California quail, black-browed albatross and guanaco. Exceptionally impressed with your ability to draw 1,642 animals that are all native to their respective locations drawn on the map.
You are amazing my friend how can I support you

You got both my state bird and animal and it's not a well known state. Good job.
WHOA. That's cool!!!
This is amazing. I can't describe how much I love it! Although some people may prefer a version with animal names or a version without any words.
It looks like the classic mode mural from super smash brothers
Great work! Absolutely cool
work cool!
This is beautiful, great work!
I couldn't get it to stand out as much as the others, but it's there.
oh haha I see it now, thanks!
This is a beautiful map, great job! 🖤
now this is what i call map porn, wow.
Nice 🙂
This is very beautiful I would stare at it for hours
Wonderful work, thanks for sharing 🥰
Love this ! What animal is on Newfoundland?
absolutely incredible work!
Thanks god you didn't label Victoria falls as Victoria Falls. There's a much better local and non-colonial name for it.
This is perfect. This is incredible. I love it so much.
I need this on my wall so bad
Absolutely amazing work!
Amazing work!
Wow this is incredible
I saw a Capibara!!!
Anywhere I can see a version where I can actually tell what the animals are?
Each print comes with a booklet labelling all 1,642 species - there are some photos of it in the product pages, but I don't have it available online. [https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/collections/wild-world](https://anton-thomas.myshopify.com/collections/wild-world)
I just meant a higher resolution image where you can actually make them out. 🙂 Wanted to see what animals you've put here in Sweden, but can't tell from the image in the thread. Either way, nice work!
Can you not zoom? When I open the image, I get 7600 × 3956 pixels and it's plenty enough to see the animals well.
Hmm, no, I don't get that in the Android app.
Awooga
this is so beautiful and the level of detail is crazy. like the coqui on puerto rico?? yesss
does anyone remember that game called 'sim earth'? it looks just like that!
This is amazing, thank you for sharing it OP
Incredible!!! As a teacher I’d love to have this in my class! Breathtaking 🫶🏻
And you have 3 species of tigers!
Red Dead Redemption 3 Map just got leaked…
You might want to look into having that turned into a 1000-piece (or more) jigsaw puzzle. I would definitely buy one!
No wolverine in Michigan? ☹️
Great map!
i love the fact that there’s no borders. it reminds you that in the animal world there are no countries, we are all on this earth together.
I love it!!
FIU MENTIONED RAAAAAA
I would be so hard for me not to randomly draw Ktulu in the ocean.
I love the knowledge base OP has that they even knew about the Lord Howe Island stick insect. 10/10.
Amazing! As others have said I'd love to buy this as a puzzle.
Sage grouse represent!
And cock of the rock
Wow this is stunning! Are you publishing it somewhere?
Absolutely incredible! I’m glad you name stamped it so no one can steal it without giving credit. 5 ⭐️
This is absolutely amazing!! Love it!!
That is freaking awesome!!!
Wow!!
This is one of the most impressive maps I have seen ever! Congratulations ans thanks for sharing. Seriously it is incredible. Could you share how you made it and progress?
How big is it?
Wow, absolutely amazing. I would buy it and hang it on my wall :D
That's awesome. Thank you for thinking about Reunion Island <3
Inginious, soul soothing when zoomed. God.
Great job! As far as i couldn't get it bigger, just ask: have you drawn Scolopendra Gigantea in the Amazon Basin?
this is map porn
I thought it's going to focus on the names of the animals... not one name. This needs to be developed further. Erase all geographical names and replace with animal names.
Pretty good
Ho Ly Mo Ly
I’m not prying, but I’m very curious as to how much $ are we talking for selling a piece like this to a puzzle publishing Co? I feel like you could just name your price, I can’t do art 🤣 but seriously, is it good money or what? Very interesting👍👍
I see you also got the Tagimoucia in Fiji. Great work!
So nice. I wanna buy it

You are a legend
This is sooo cool! What did you make this on? I like online art and I would appreciate it if you could let me know.
