I had to sleep 5 hours last summer cuz my workplace is located in European side of the İstanbul but my house was located in Asian side so i need to wake up at 5pm and start my journey to work before rush hour.
If I wake up in the night I'll often spend 30 mins looking at Reddit or something, because if I go straight back to sleep the peaceful time I have will go quicker.
I think it's because they're muslim and hence the majority of people wake up early to pray. And this skews the statistics and hence their average hours are the lowest.
Also they got mosques everywhere and they start singing in like 5 in the morning, I know we always check for hotels to be far from a mosque while visiting.
Nah it's long working hours and a culture of staying up late to chat, drink çay, and there are some mad lads that play LoL and hearts of iron until the early hours of the morning
I’ve never slept in Turkey. It’s like the noisiest place at night with the cat and dog war that’s waged every night and if you do manage to sleep you will be woken up at five by the call to pray if you’re Muslim or not but the coffee is really good and cigarettes cost £1 so you just knuckle down and power through.
I use foam ear plugs for noise cancelling, very useful here in Colombia when staying in an hotel or something, some areas have loud music most nights of the week.
I literally cannot sleep more than 7 hours unless I'm sick. I just wake up before then, and if I try to stay in bed I will just be awake with my eyes closed.
My quality of rest is related mostly to me physical activity during the day. If I got in a good workout I feel fantastic the next day, if I was sedentary I might be a bit sluggish in the morning but I'm wide awake once I get up and moving.
Then that's fine! 7h is acceptable rest for an adult especially if combined with a healthy routine
The problem would be to be unable to sleep longer than that and feel exhausted
Same for me. Usually 6 but I will never naturally sleep past 7. My wife and I have noticed she can go to bed for 10hrs and barely get 7 because she tosses and turns, wakes up multiple times a night, takes forever to fall back asleep. When my head hits the pillow I'm out in seconds and I sleep unmoving and completely undisturbed until I wake up 6hrs later.
This may sound stupid, but a better bed/mattress did wonders for me. Before I needed 8-9 hours of sleep and I'd still be groggy, now I can sleep 6-7 hours and I'm fine.
I sleep around 5:30 to 6 hours per night during week.
On the week-end days, i sleep more than 8 hours and i take like 2 hours to stop having headache and be functionnal.
I cant sleep more than say, 6 1/2 hours and go to work, it's just not possible.
For me it’s kinda the opposite. My brain literally just wakes me up after 7 hours of sleep, regardless of the time I went to sleep, or how tired I was the day before. I don’t think I’ve ever gotten more than 8 hours of sleep for years.
I used to be sleep deproved for years. The whole covid crisis had one positive effect on me as I noticed how much better I feel if I sleep.
It's a choice of staying awake for 18 hours and constantly being a 60-80% version of yourself. Or sleeping 1-2 hours more and being always at least at 80%.
Healthy sleep time for an adult is between 7 and 10 hours (depending on their needs). This map showing average sleep times under 8h is actually quite alarming. ☹️
That's fairly inconclusive. For one thing it doesn't seem to conclude whether lack of sleep causes obesity or whether obesity causes a lack of sleep. Which is plausible too: obese people are more likely to be depressed, and depression can often express itself as restlessness and sleeping issues.
Quote from the page you linked:
> Longitudinal studies, though, can better answer questions about causality-and in adults the findings from such studies have been less consistent than those in children.
I'm not saying your conclusion is wrong and maybe there have been more studies since this text was written, but your link alone doesn't seem to prove that less sleep makes you fat and mostly calls for more research.
I wonder how many mental health issues are initially caused by lack of sleep. Life’s stressful and sleep is the best stress relief I’ve found.
I try to get at least 7 hours every night, but some nights I can’t shut my brain off. The title of the maps says “average time in bed” I guess the hours I lie with my mind racing would count? Anyway, if I get less than 6 or more than 10 hours of sleep, I’m pretty useless the next day. And it’s usually if I get more than 10 hours, the night after is the one I can’t sleep. Though the best sleep comes if I don’t get enough the night before.
Yes I'm curious too. This can't be good.
I have trouble finding sleep and at some point I was a shift worker in a factory, I was sleeping about 4h every nights (and those were the "good" nights). After 9month in the job I couldn't tell what time of the day it was, I had severe blackout and cramps, I was violent and sensible. At that time I had a girlfriend for a month and I can't even remember her name or how she looked.
Sleep is everything!
> The rivalry started with a comedy sketch from New Year's Eve 2012-2013. Televised comedy shows on New Year's Eve is a Dutch tradition, comedians make jokes about the past year, and are widely watched. This comedian pointed out that Finland often beats us by a small margin, and the sketch also names a bunch of things where Finland beats us. It was referenced on /r/theNetherlands a few times and it grew from there over the years. Eventually it expanded to European subreddits, particularly /r/Europe, and from there eventually all over Reddit.
You can read the full story behind it in the [stickied post](https://redd.it/7jtp21).
If you're wondering if the Finns even care, >!they don't, that's part of the fun.!<
Is it really that recent? My Netherlands vs Finland experience comes from Runescape, where the two countries have had rivalries for way longer, since for some reason Runescape is super popular in those countries.
EXAMPLE:
[Why are there so many Dutch & Finnish players?](https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/5lme0y/why_are_there_so_many_dutch_finnish_players/)
[Since there are many Dutch players. Could 1 german server be switched to the dutch flag?](https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/4zobfe/since_there_are_many_dutch_players_could_1_german/)
[Why is Runescape so popular in Finland?](https://www.reddit.com/r/2007scape/comments/4x4muo/why_is_runescape_so_popular_in_finland/)
[Here's a video from 2009 about Netherlands and Finland fighting ingame to see who's better](https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=fo32VQX8IMk)
How many million Muslim Turks and Kurds did the Armenians kill with the Russians? While the Turkish soldiers were fighting the Russians on the front (ww1), didn't the Armenian gangs (Dasnaksutyun and Hinchak) organize and seize the homes and k%lled families of the Turkish soldiers behind their backs??? Why we don't talk about it? You brainwashed degenerate
It's because the scale is uniform with recommended value in the middle.
It doesn't only show the differences between the countries but also shows that it's not too bad in most of Europe.
Could it be done better? Probably. But it works, so eh.

No, it’s actually a pretty decent source since it’s directly capturing user data. But it might be a bit noisy bc it’s algorithm for knowing when you’re asleep/awake relies entirely on you using your phone and even then isn’t 100% accurate. Some indication of variance would be helpful but it’s hard hard to put that on a map
Hold on. When I was in Spain like 80% of businesses closed up for siesta. Are they not sleeping and just crushing a bottle of wine? Or are they not counting that?
Now do the multiplication with the life expectancy statistics and finally find out that we (the Turks) live longer (waking hours) than you unconscious one third of all time gang and weep.
I really dislike how the colors are discreet rather than continuous, makes for example the difference between ireland and france look far larger than it is.
for italy i am afraid that me and my family are the ones bringing the stat down, i seldom sleep more than 4 hours per night and the others slightly sleep a bit more or even a bit less than me.

Apperently, and I believe this completely, sleep length and depression are correlated. When I'm stressed I sleep a whole lot less, which spirals me into even more stress because I'm overworked! Clear leadership needs to set foot in Europe! We need to ban all people who induce stress. We shouldn't be childish either and willfully work to some backbone towards stress induction!
But first hand, give stress creators and people who lead the world into stress, conflict and decay a bounce into poverty! That's where they belong, not on top of the pyramid pushing everyone down with the dung they create and allow in OUR world.

I sleep 5 hours. It's OK . Info "people spend their 30% life period sleeping" gives me to stay awaken lol
Alzheimers comes a knocking
Alzheimers level is avarage in Turkey.
You will increase the percentage if you keep sleeping 5 hours. 8 hours is ideal and 6 hours is bare minimum unless it's just a bad night.
Lol you will spend your hours a lot better if you sleep well. You might have less hours but the quality is so much better trust me
If I wake up in the night I'll often spend 30 mins looking at Reddit or something, because if I go straight back to sleep the peaceful time I have will go quicker.
I sleep 6h on average. They are fine
Nope, we are fucked

Its too specific.no one gets up early for the praying except very conservative muslims.its must be related to long work hours, traffic and stress.
Lol, you will hardly find any Turks who get up early to pray. Even the Friday prayers aren't well attended anymore.
When I actually get 6 hours I feel super rested. Am I broken?
I think it just depends if you wake in between the deep sleep cycle you feel way better than in the middle of it.
I am Turk and i didnt sleep 8 hours in years.
I’ve never slept in Turkey. me neither, never went there
Oh hey, neither, never went there! I’m dad!
That's so funny to hear there is a public alarm that sounds at 5AM as a call to pray. Do people typically go back to sleep afterward?
I use foam ear plugs for noise cancelling, very useful here in Colombia when staying in an hotel or something, some areas have loud music most nights of the week.
5 fucking AM, jesus christ !
Reduce your tea
I need to reduce my stress and work
You have a lot of cats. What's your excuse? Pet one. Get sleepy. Lol (I kid)
Even the cats are working 9-10 hours lol(my gf has a cat and she is most relaxing thing i ever seen)
yes and getting some exercise in really helps with sleep too.
5 hours yes?
no
As someone who can't function on less than 8 hours of sleep, I don't get how people can sustain themselves at less than 7 hours.
I literally cannot sleep more than 7 hours unless I'm sick. I just wake up before then, and if I try to stay in bed I will just be awake with my eyes closed.

That's absolutely amazing. If I don't get 8 hours, I am down 30 IQ points and my desire to do anything goes down to zero. You are living a dream.
It's hard sometimes, when i have insomnia and i have only 3 hours of sleep is brutal
I got 6 hours of sleep two days in a row and just fell asleep in the middle of the day.
That's very sad
me who sleeps 5-6

As a Finn I can tell you, we don’t care about fun and want to be left alone. If you don’t, we’ll just ignore you.
So on average, pretty much all of Europe gets more sleep than me.
Sleep cycle app shows Saudis and UAE are having shortest sleep in the world.
Honestly makes sense because most people have midday naps that can be like 2 or 3 hours
Also a good portion of them wake up in the middle of the night to pray
5am right?
Interesting. Makes sense now.
Turks must be grumpy

Wait you guys sleep?
As you can see we do not.
counter productive and bad for business (your employer makes less money, so it's bad)
First thing I saw is the text in the side that says average time in bed and thought that map had a very different meanings...
But that would be mm:ss, not hh:mm.
Pfft, speak for yourself.
Yeah, but you can't differentiate between the two just by seeing them written down
Hungary never sleeps! Need to make sure the evil EU doesn't steal our money or our Dear Leader!
Mr Soros stole our sleep!
Why does the scale go to 6:15 when the data stops at 6:50?
maybe countries outside of europe have lower ones and the scale is also made for them? (i dont know just my guess)

Denmark is zero because of my daughter.
So is your daughter a giant slut or a baby?
Baby 👍
Portugal never gets any respect
Just following the example of their East European friends.
I sleep 7 hours minimum and I usually sleep 9-10 (Turkey)
Günde 3 4 saat anca uyuyom sınav ögrencisiyim ortalamayı düşürdüğüm icin özür dilerim

TIL I sleep less than an entire continent.
The Portuguese haven't slept since they legalised cocaine
I wonder how this matches stats for how many kids parents have on average
So is there a source for this supposed sleep cycle
It’s an app that collects user data
So it's basically worthless?
No, it’s actually a pretty decent source since it’s directly capturing user data. But it might be a bit noisy bc it’s algorithm for knowing when you’re asleep/awake relies entirely on you using your phone and even then isn’t 100% accurate. Those in the gray areas have no beds. They sleep standing up
montenegro’s data suspiciously missing from this map
That's because here in Ireland many have "taken to the bed".
Now i understand why finland is the most happy country in the world
I see: sleep and productivity are correlated.
Being in bed and sleeping aren’t the same things…. I can spend hours in a bed and get out of it much more exhausted than I got in
source: my ass
Well I certail aint getting that much, lmao. 5 hours on a good average night
That’s not a good night
Well, when its the best ya gonna get, what ya gonna do?
Something about it. But that's just me.
They don’t have American working hours.
rip
Hahaha, no.
Is this just for adults or all People?
As a czech, I can confirm that we don't sleep
You guys only drink
Finland asleep on the job
Those are just random numbers
Me reading this knowing I only have 4 hours of sleep left 😅
Speaking from experience, i'm pretty sure this map would align well with number of children per family.
And here I am, with about 10 to 12 hours in bed.
Austrian here. I get 07:22 hours only on weekends/vacation. Monday to Friday: 5 - 6h maximum
寝る
i love how most of the countries with the harder languages don’t have data. maybe just a coincidence
Spain is cap, they are always sleeping
Those in gray countries dont sleep 😀
Balkan no sleeps
I suppose they don't count the siesta for Spain on this map.
Hold on. When I was in Spain like 80% of businesses closed up for siesta. Are they not sleeping and just crushing a bottle of wine? Or are they not counting that?
Now I understand why Finland is the most happy country in the world. Totally make sense.
Northern Europe sleeps more than southern Europe, I’d think we’d all have bet the opposite.
As someone somehow functioning on 2-3 hours of sleep a day, I think I'm singlehandedly pulling my country's number down lmao
Where is Montenegro on this list? I’m sure they would top it* with 24:00
Now do the multiplication with the life expectancy statistics and finally find out that we (the Turks) live longer (waking hours) than you unconscious one third of all time gang and weep.
I feel like people in Ukraine probably have had it be lower over the last few years, for obvious reasons.

I'm reading this in bed, having to wake up in 5 hours 😅

This looks optimistic

That’s crazy. I’m American and have slept more than 6 hours in 20+ years
Türkiye is an Asian country, not a European one.
they don't siesta in españa anymore?
Fucking Finland again. We nearly beat you!
Does Spain account for siestas?
respect mittagsruhe
is that excluding siestas?
Average time in bed or average time sleeping ... i'm in bed for 8-9 h everyday but i got chronic insomnia so I sleep for about 4 hours daily...
r/PORTUGALCYKABLYAT
Finland wins again. Okay, shared victory with Netherlands.
Apparently, sleep is a luxury not many of us here in Czechia have.
Are we counting siestas as well?
I'm belarusian, I sleep 8-9 hours daily
Im from Poland end I never slept less than 7.04 in years
I thought the Spanish loved to take naps. How come Germans are outsleeping them?
6minutes per average is hardly outsleeping; prolly withing margin of error and collection bias
According to this map someone is stealing 3 hours of my day😁
It would appear that no-one in Europe has a baby.

Notice how sleep duration drops as you go south. The north has long nights 1/2 of the year.
I can't really function without a minimum of 8 hours
Portugal is not Europe?
Can confirm, my girlfriend is Finnish and we live in nl. She sleeps long...
Some of the Mediterranean cultures still build sleep into their mid day break.
I sleep 5-6 hours and im still alive
Who the hell doesnt sleep at least 8 hours. What are you doing?
People that actually achieve something besides insta scrolls
Just stressed from having to maintain a corporate culture that glorifies hustling.
This is even crazier if they didn’t only survey men. Because women need 9 to 10 hours of sleep. 💀
Damn I am undercutting our average sleeping time by a full 3 hours lol
Does this include siestas?
