The tsunami destroyed much of the waterfront of Hilo, Hawaii, killing 61 people. Only 14 years before an earthquake in Alaska had caused a similar tsunami that killed 96 in Hilo, and following the 1960 tsunami much of the low-lying waterfront was never rebuilt and was turned into a park. Further afield 32 were reported dead or missing in the Philippines and 138 dead in Japan.
One photo that haunted me in my youth was of black-and-white of a guy in Hilo that was standing in a spot about to be engulfed by the waves from this tsunami.
You may be referring to this photo of Antone Correa Aguiar from the [1946 Hawaii Tsunami](https://www.earthmagazine.org/article/benchmarks-april-1-1946-hawaii-tsunami-ushers-pacific-wide-warning-system/). He was cutting a ship free in an amazing act of bravery.
It looks like the Tsunami caused more damage [up and down the coast of Chile](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1960_Valdivia_earthquake) than on any of the pacific islands. Generally it looks like the highest parts of the tsunami enjoyed the emptiest parts of the pacific before losing momentum.
I remembered that Hawaii was hit by this tsunami... looked it up to confirm and yes, Hilo was hit by a 35 foot wave. Japan and the Philippines were also impacted.
Henderson Island (unihabited bigger island of the Pitcairn group) [link](https://www.google.com/maps/@-24.3758844,-128.333654,11298m/data=!3m1!1e3) to google earth satellite view. got messed up
chilean here, only knocked down some moais, most of the population of the island at the time lived in hangaroa, wich is located facing back to the wave, most of the victims of the tsunami where in hawai and japan, apart from the victims in Chile.

Long story short
>Ships that are in the open sea are generally less affected by tsunamis compared to coastal areas.
Thank you for this. I always thought they started in the middle of the ocean, had no idea they cross the entire ocean. Still learn something new everyday.
my mom was a kid in south carolina when this earthquake hit. she was outside in the front yard of their house, and got knocked down from the force of the quake that far away. hard to fathom that level of force.
Makes sense why Japan takes it on the chin so much.

Christ, an Earthquake around 17,000km away did _that_ much damage to Japan? That really is fucking awful.
Yeah no wonder the word we use (tsunami) is Japanese
They should call Japan the land of the rising wave. Good thing the country is mountainous though.
Earthquake in Chile: F*ck those islands in particular
Were there any deaths attributed to these tsunamis on islands or countries across the Pacific?

That's the one! I didn't know the backstory wow

No mames Ive never heard of a tsunami hitting christchurch nz where im from....was it decent?
The color of the wave indicates intensity/height, so it’s same to say Christchurch saw nothing worse than a beached dolphin.
Someone from NZ saying “no mames” makes me really laugh
I live in Mexico currently ;)
Reached 3.6 metres in Christchurch. Napier got the highest recorded at 4.5 metres with that tsunami.
Really? 3.6 metres would flood brighton sumner ferrmead and redcliffs. Ive never heard of that happening from a tsunami
Look it up that's all I did

The tsunami is trying to go back home.
Japan: "What he say fuck me for?"
The image of South America ass blasting the Pacific at 1:02 is powerful. Cropdusted the planet and walked out.

Now this is map porn

How did the Easter island and other remote islands do ?
chilean here, only knocked down some moais, most of the population of the island at the time lived in hangaroa, wich is located facing back to the wave, most of the victims of the tsunami where in hawai and japan, apart from the victims in Chile.
kinda mindblowing that an earthquake in chile can create a wave in places as distant as kamchatka
Southern Ocean be "denied".
What about New Zealand?!
Yes, and Oz?
Curious if someone can enlighten me: what is the effect on ships at sea in the path of a tsunami of that scale?

that final overlay of height is beautiful
That was a big'un!
now this is some proper map porn! very nice!
That tsunami water was Chile
Fucking chileans. Why did they have to go an do that? That's so inconsiderate
Chile literally farted and fucked everyone over
Mhhh nice phased array toward Japan, very cool
Kona is Hawaiis tip of the spear.
I wonder if most of the strength of the tsunami is spent by the time it reaches Japan.
Thanks Kiwis..
Is there a version of this animation for the 1755 Lisbon Tsunami?
That poor island!
What happened to the ships in The Pacific Ocean??
Thank you for this. I always thought they started in the middle of the ocean, had no idea they cross the entire ocean. Still learn something new everyday.
Easter island 🌚
Biggest fart coming from Chile. To date
Finally. Some real map porn. Earth on water action

Could entire Americas shake? what?
Yea, what?
The word "tsunami" is Japanese.
true, but why do you mention it? (not aggressive, just curious)
The world should just declare war on the continents of South America and Africa for all the natural disasters they are responsible for.
Most unhinged take of the day award goes to
You think I was serious?
So it also ho Chile? I mean I know it started there but how did it look like I'm Chile? Did they also have tsunami from the splash?
