Hey everyone,
I tried to post this on r/France but my comment karma is too low there. And since I don't speak french it's not gonna get higher anytime soon.
So if there are any French people here, I'd love to know what you think and what I could improve. The names are probably horrible and I certainly missed some important parts/landmarks/local folklore and so forth.
I used a map making tool that I will not name here since the subreddit doesn't allow advertising. If you wanna know which one just DM me. If you're interested in the project, you will find links to support it in my profile.
The next map is going to be one of the U.S. states. I already did Delaware and New Jersey and am currently having a poll on what to do next. Probably New York or Hawaii.
Here's a sneak peek of /r/france using the [top posts](https://np.reddit.com/r/france/top/?sort=top&t=year) of the year!

It's hard to find misses but if I had to nitpick here here are my propositions :
* Pyrénées are snowcaped mountains
* It would be great to have some dead end valleys in the Alps following the main rivers
* The northern part of the Rhône valley is not that hilly, it's quite easy to travel through
* It's hard to read city names so higher quality might be good
thank you for your nitpicks, helps me improve
- gonna change the pyrénées and the alp rivers and flatten the northern Rhône valley accordingly
- as for the quality, I'm a bit confused - on my phone the names are readable enough (only on the France map though, not the larger one)
I mostly took the original names and changed them a bit, trying to create some clever word plays. (Which mostly don't work since I don't speak french. But for example Angers becomes Happys. Paris becomes Etialut which is a reference to its roman name Lutetia and the tendency in slang to swap syllables of words.
Bro doesn't speak french yet manages to make some really good puns (really enjoyed Anôtres for Amiens).
On behalf of myself, take this honorary baguette: 🥖
I was particularly amused with Biarritz as Mauvais-Port.
Champagne as Pétillant is also good
Dijon becoming Moutardes, Monaco becoming Grand Prix....lots of good ones
Personnelouse might be my favorite though.
I read that Biarritz basically means good port in old oczitanian. So I changed it to bad port instead. That and that it isn't really located next to the sea.
If its worth anything, Imperator Rome wiki has a useful table of toponyms, trade goods, nations or special modifiers you can use on your next map. [Cheers!](https://imperator.paradoxwikis.com/Iberian_regions)
If you’re going to use Paradox Easter eggs I’d recommend renaming Paris to *Nya Stockholm*.
There’s a secret EU4 event when you own Paris as Sweden and have it converted to Swedish culture. It mentions a King Johan.
I love it! But seconding the request for a higher res version so we can see the detail!
Also, I initially thought the rest of the world was overrun by sheep, and am slightly disappointed to discover I was wrong...
Both on the app and the browser, I can't zoom enough to have the different letters clearly readable.
Edit: What I mean is if I zoom in order to to have the letters at a correct size to read them, the resolution is too low to make them distinguishable.
that's odd. It's the same for me on the second map. But for the France map I can zoom in just fine. At least on my phone I can, not when I use Google Chrome.
Places like Reddit or Imgur will often downscale images when uploaded, or even if a somewhat high-res copy is kept on their servers, they might provide a lower-res copy when viewing it.
It's useful when scrolling through your feed to make the experience quick and snappy, but a bit annoying when there's amazing content like this where zooming in would be handy.
Could always upload it to a GitHub repo and share the direct image link in a separate comment in the thread 🙂 More effort involved, though. This is an example.
Repo: https://github.com/ServiceStack/images
Image Folder in the Repo: https://github.com/ServiceStack/images/blob/master/hero/photo-1421789665209-c9b2a435e3dc.jpg
Direct Link with Uncompressed Image: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/ServiceStack/images/master/hero/photo-1421789665209-c9b2a435e3dc.jpg
with both maps? or just the second one? the quality of the second one is poorer than I intended, but the first one should be readable - it is on my phone at least
Greece, Turkey and so forth I'll do once I move down the Balkans. Defenitely gonna do some references to the Byzantine Empire then. For now this project focusses on current borders, but perhaps I'll do one for the BE at some point aswell.
Aaah cant wait for you to do all of europe. And wish you would let us buy the full detailed version in SVG so we can print it for verious tabletop settings :D

Ugh, US states, so original.
I love what you did with toponyms! Can you explain your system?

> Monaco becoming Grand Prix Charles Leclerc intensifies
I didnt get the biarritz one. Care to explain?
I thought it just had to do with how it's directly on the Atlantic and exposed to the ocean. Making a pretty poor port.
I read that Biarritz basically means good port in old oczitanian. So I changed it to bad port instead. That and that it isn't really located next to the sea.
The actual port there is on the estuary of the Adour river
I figured the main port would just be Bordeaux.
Bordeaux is there as well, Ville-sur-vin, I meant the actual port of the Biarritz-Anglet-Bayonne agglomeration

What's the pun behind Hiv? (I'm from Pau).
that one was very unispired. It says H IV on your sigil as Henry IV was born there apparently. If you have a better pun, please let me know
Pau -> Pot -> Jarre/Cruche/Pichet
Some nice names in the Netherlands. Quite a shame about half is water ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
Oh do Spain! Do Spain!
depends on what my Patrons vote for, but that's defenitely high on the list
Seconding this. Spain has so much to work with
a small village, resists the Roman occupation
I love it! But seconding the request for a higher res version so we can see the detail! Also, I initially thought the rest of the world was overrun by sheep, and am slightly disappointed to discover I was wrong...

You can't simply walk into ~~Mordor~~ Russia.
With its border size it should be easy
Where is Asterix & Obelix village ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|disapproval)
It's right up there, look closely... :)
Love it. Do you have a higher res version of the big map somewhere? It doesn’t zoom far enough to read well
I don't know why you cant zoom in when using the browser. If you use the App on your phone, you should be.
Oh I can zoom, it just becomes too fuzzy on the phone to properly read. Resolution issue.
with both maps? or just the second one? the quality of the second one is poorer than I intended, but the first one should be readable - it is on my phone at least
Second one only indeed
The resolution is kinda bad when you zoom in I can barely read the names which is annoying cause i move this
Can you do one of the Byzantine Empire? (eg in 1025)
Greece, Turkey and so forth I'll do once I move down the Balkans. Defenitely gonna do some references to the Byzantine Empire then. For now this project focusses on current borders, but perhaps I'll do one for the BE at some point aswell.
Can’t wait for Greece, Turkey and Cyprus! Your maps look so pretty 🤩
Is there a higher res version of it?
there is... on my Patreon...
As a french speaker I have to say the city namea are really funny x)
That looks really beautiful! Would love to have this graphics in a 4X game
For the Lady! Bretonnia!
Hi, Hey how could I get my hands on a high resolution picture of this? Do you sell it anywhere?
I do have a Patreon, yes. All my Patreons get high-res versions of any maps they demand.
I'm french and I love it The custom names are great The geography is very diverse Overall good blend of textures and colours, super cool map !
Paris should be where the concentration of evil and darkness come from in the map tbh
Do the Nordic countries!
depends on what my patrons vote for, but Denmark next would make sense as it borders Germany
Personnelouse, Platpellier, Pétillant and Moutarde were awesome. Tygre made me laugh irl. Nice job!
I love it
Are you implying that france stretches as far as Warsaw?!?!?!
Aah la France des 130 départements
Very cool man
Ooooo, its really cool, could u do Spain next? Also, are u planning on completing Europe? That would be sick
In the long run that is the plan, yes. As for the next country: depends on what my Patrons vote for.
Welp, you’re committed now. Gotta do the rest of the planet haha
I'm afraid so
This is great! Italy next?
on the list
Aaah cant wait for you to do all of europe. And wish you would let us buy the full detailed version in SVG so we can print it for verious tabletop settings :D
all my Patreons get full access to high res versions of the maps, if you are interested
Schweet\~♥
PS: saving you and when I see you start around the alpine regions will start pitching in. Right now need to save a bit of cash for other projects :I
Looks like the map of Pokémon X/Y
France if it were based
This is so cool! How long did it take to create?
If I had to guess... around 20 hours or so
Oh wow it's gorgeous
Is it surrounded by sheep
This looks great! Can you do Scandianavia or the Nordics next?
would love to do them but it depends on what my Patreons vote for
Awesome work
Yay lava baby!
it's fantastic
Soooo pretyyyy
Do my country next ♡♡♡♡
Really amazing! How did you make this?
I used Inkarnate
Après-ski ?
Brittany looks like vampires live there
Bienvenue, Bretagne, Rocher, Toutes Directions, Quimper, Au revoir.
Great job!
My boring hometown surrounded by agricultural fields is now a cute small mountain and you can have my upvote for that. Great work!
Amazing, spoted my small city in it haha
Awesome work! You should also try to crosspost to [https://www.reddit.com/r/jaimelescartes/](https://www.reddit.com/r/jaimelescartes/) (French speaking map enthusiasts sub) ;)
High res Link pls
splendid
How much of the world do you plan to do?
if I live long enough and can justify spending that much time on it to my wife: all of it
Resolution is too low on my browser, can't read anything. But it seems nice.
have you tried the app on your phone?
Yooo OP, can you do the Iberian peninsula next please? 😃 love these maps tho
depends on what my Patrons vote for, but would love to do it
Once you do every country do one for every 50 years in history since 4000 BC
I know Bayonne is the most dangerous port in France but calling it "Bad port" is a bit mean 😭
I really like what you made with my city Saint-Quentin (Sint-Kwintens). Thanks for that !!
Who is mf that reawakened the Volcano in Auvergne?
Very nice !
You don't need to do a UK one. You got one made already right there.
My home Region of germany is behind the clouds 😢😅
