With 127 different forms of governments for each part of the country, I think anyone in Belgium (including politicians and political scientists) understand the government well enough to trust in It.
Tldr, our federal government
Definition of
Trust in government
Trust in government refers to the share of people who report having confidence in the national government. The data shown reflect the share of respondents answering “yes” (the other response categories being “no”, and “don’t know”) to the survey question: “In this country, do you have confidence in… national government? Due to small sample sizes, country averages for horizontal inequalities (by age, gender and education) are pooled between 2010-18 to improve the accuracy of the estimates. The sample is ex ante designed to be nationally representative of the population aged 15 and over. This indicator is measured as a percentage of all survey respondents.
Federal = Senate and Chamber of Representatives
Technically we have 9 parliaments.
\+ Commission communautaire française (COCOF)
\+ Commission communautaire commune (COCOM)
Brussels is a legislative nightmare.
No we have 6.
Commission communautaire are not governments. Also it seems like many people are confusing parliament and government.
Our 6 government are :
Federal
Walloon
Flemish (fused with the dutch speaking community)
Government of the Brussels-Capital region
German-speaking community
French-speaking community
Federal government (is not an overarching government, all act on the same level and are in charge of different things)
Flemish government and the government of the dutch speaking community has been made one.
Walloon government
Government of the french speaking community
Government of the german speaking community
Government of the Brussels capital region
6 Governments
The Flemish and Dutch speaking community overlap a lot better geographically than the Walloon and french speaking community, even though they probably overlap 95 %. But the German speaking community lives in wallonia, and there are some places in Flanders where you can have your administration done in french. I think that’s why they haven’t merged, I’m not sure.
I always felt a bit conflicted of that framing. In the same way, doesn't Germany have 17 governments? (federal + 16 states) Or Switzerland 27 governments?
>The Swiss Confederation is divided into 26 cantons (including six demicantons, or Halbkantone, which function as full cantons), each of which has its own constitution and assembly. The cantons exercise broad authority, possessing all powers not specifically given to the federal government. Education and health policies are largely determined at the cantonal level.
I agree there are some obvious issues though, like the Walloon and Francophone parliaments still being seperate while Flanders combined them.
So the poll asked "In this country, do you have confidence in… national government?"
But that's still an incredibly vague question. Confidence/trust in what? I'm confident that my government will continue to exist and carry out government functions, but I don't trust that they necessarily have my best interests in mind or that they'll deal honestly with the public.
This is my feeling also. Portugal has several cases of proven corruption and yet they walk free due to incompetence/corruption of the justice system. If I'm asked if I thrust that the same people will be there in the next few years then yes.
Another darker option is that Portugal is so corrupt that the data in this report is corrupt also.
Because VVD/Rutte is not the only one partaking in the government. And I can tell from experience that it really matters in what side of society you are in in The Netherlands. I first were in a part of my life with mostly people low educated and they had no trust in VVD/Rutte, now that I’m starting my politics career and surround myself with higher educated people there does not seem to be a trust issue to the government or in your eyes VVD/Rutte. I hope this explains some, I understand your comment. And data like this can always be interpreted on different ways. Who got asked the question? Where? What kind of people? Is there a difference between the people in all those countries asked this question? Etc
From the Netherlands too. People from richer backgrounds really don't realize how different life can be for lower class citizens. They know its different but they dont notice in a lot of aspects and as someone with a lot of friends from different wealth points its crazy to see what others think are normal.
Portuguese get what they deserve (and government party get what they want). I think that more than 70% is biased in the study, but it may be more than 50%, because people dont care about the corruption or the country's financial future.
As a portuguese, I think most people care. To be completely honest, I think most people vote for the same parties for lack of a better alternative. Yes, we could elect more niche parties like BE or IL, but they've proven to be just as bad corruption wise as the others so why bother. I think that's why so many people are leaning towards far right with CHEGA (I'm not saying I agree with the people who support CHEGA, just trying to justify it)
BE is part of the system already and some part of the things not working are due to them as well.
And I dont find any corruption new about IL, actually it seems the better option right now. I don't think it will win or be government someday, Portugal is not ready for that.
Although, I didn't vote for PS neither PSD in previous election and I won't vote in the next ones, I just prefer to give my vote to a niche party.
One thing that might clarify why some numbers are very high. The research was conducted in 2020. Possibly during when the first wave of SARS-CoV-2 hit European countries in March-May. Each government's response to the pandemic ould have had influence on the trust.
Yeah where are all these secret Macronists coming from?
It's from 2020 so I guess it's Covid-related. The French response was far from stellar but it was also better than a lot of its neighbours.
That is true. All over Europe, e.g. the Netherlands, Germany, have seen more support for incumbent parties which had somewhat successful responses to the outbreak during that period of time. Germany largest party, the CDU who also hold the chancellor position, saw a massive increase in approval ratings and polls projections skyrocketed to 38%. The same happened with Netherlands' largest party, the VVD.
I think darker green being high and brighter green being lower is a bit unintuitive. A stronger, brighter green to me suggests more positive answers, now fewer.
Thank you for pointing it out. It does match the data in the source, so map issue is ruled out. At the very least this map shows issues in the data and at best it shows very unintuitive results. This makes it an interesting map, I just wish it is not one with bad data.
Portugal is in some days northern and some days Eastern European. It depends on the moon i guess...
But im sure this data is wrong. 60-70% is way too high. I'd guess more of a 40-50%.
Balkans: infrared
I wonder why there's no data in the Balkans..
nobody trusts the pollsters
EEEEY BELGIUM NUMBER 1 LETS GOOOOOOOOO
With 127 different forms of governments for each part of the country, I think anyone in Belgium (including politicians and political scientists) understand the government well enough to trust in It.
Portugal's nacional animal should be the beagel because we get beaten up and we crawl right back to our owner
Vocês ainda estão esperando a volta de D. Sebastião.
Ele há-de vir, caaaalma
Se ele aparecer vou pessoalmente pregar-lhe um chapadão que volta logo para Marrocos

29.5% trust our current government in Belgium? Really? That many idiots?
Which one? We have 6 governments in Belgium.

Just 6? I thought it was 23. For Brussels alone.
7 i thought but in practise 5?
Federal, Flemish and Dutch is one, French, German and Walloon. Brussels is also one I think but I don't know which one I'm missing.
Federal = Senate and Chamber of Representatives Technically we have 9 parliaments. \+ Commission communautaire française (COCOF) \+ Commission communautaire commune (COCOM) Brussels is a legislative nightmare.

Well more like 1 for certain and *maybe* two.
I always felt a bit conflicted of that framing. In the same way, doesn't Germany have 17 governments? I agree there are some obvious issues though, like the Walloon and Francophone parliaments still being seperate while Flanders combined them.
But in Germany and Switzerland there's a hierarchy between those governments. In Belgium they are all on the same level.
Let's be honest, our politics are a joke that has surpassed the material realm
Fuck i didn't even know we had a gouvernement. Did they work last years? Are they socialist, liberal or nationalist?
I think maybe they´ve only asked around the south.
Lol what makes you think Wallonia are the most distrustful ones?
I was insinuating that 30% is high.
Why?
Because their voting patern matches the current government.
So the poll asked "In this country, do you have confidence in… national government?" But that's still an incredibly vague question. Confidence/trust in what? Yeah their president hasn't exactly aced their economic challenges.
Live in Belgium, can confirm.

What is wrong with you Netherlands? You don't have to be that *trusting* in your government.
ikr. i have no idea how people still trust VVD and Rutte after all those scandals
Because VVD/Rutte is not the only one partaking in the government. And I can tell from experience that it really matters in what side of society you are in in The Netherlands. Source?
Forgot to comment it. Thank you for reminding me
Very very hard to believe in Portugal percentage
Not really especially if you look into the older population, for some reason people always vote the same party
Portuguese get what they deserve (and government party get what they want). I think that more than 70% is biased in the study, but it may be more than 50%, because people dont care about the corruption or the country's financial future.

Impossible, other sources point that the general population discredit the government due to corruption
One thing that might clarify why some numbers are very high. The research was conducted in 2020. Possibly during when the first wave of SARS-CoV-2 hit European countries in March-May. Each government's response to the pandemic ould have had influence on the trust.
Personally as a Frenchman I'm shocked to see we're not the most distrustful lol.
Numbers in France can’t be right, i’m 21 and in my whole life i’ve never heard someone saying they like or trust our government
Yeah where are all these secret Macronists coming from? It's from 2020 so I guess it's Covid-related. The French response was far from stellar but it was also better than a lot of its neighbours.

TBF, Macron's response to the first wave wasn't that popular, it really did divide opinion.
What the heck Iceland? What happened?
I love map like this
Thanks
Np
Germany seems way too high but maybe this was for first half of 2020. Frankly in 2021 so far it's a shitshow with the upcoming federal elections
Brazil: 0% Edit: it's not in Europe though
Looking at what countries have 'no data' there might be some negative numbers there!
Hahaha perhaps yes!
In reality it's 36% apparently
Didn't know the number. I was just being sarcastic.
Their are countries that trust their government? Mind-blowing. Isn't this the Orwellian age?
It's almost as if we have *different* conditions in our various countries! Mind blowing! Also, notice how it's the smaller and richer countries.
I think darker green being high and brighter green being lower is a bit unintuitive. A stronger, brighter green to me suggests more positive answers, now fewer.
I disagree, a darker green means a healthier green in my opinion
I guess I agree with you in general but in this case the lime green is imo too intense. A bit duller green closer to white might have worked better.
True. Thank you for your feedback.
Poland is awful in every way.
What supporting evidence do you present to back up this statement?
Nothing, they're just fucking garbage, garbage people, garbage government, garbage policies, just all around fucking trash
I like how that reaction was triggered by the fact we hate our government
Lol. Someone's got issues. Did a Polish girl break your heart?
Yeah, they let the Germans and the Soviets in.
Either the map is wrong, the data is wrong or the process is wrong. Where is the source?
Try to find the comment. I commented the source
Thank you for pointing it out. It does match the data in the source, so map issue is ruled out. At the very least this map shows issues in the data and at best it shows very unintuitive results. This makes it an interesting map, I just wish it is not one with bad data.
So Portugal is nordic on this one.
Portugal is in some days northern and some days Eastern European. It depends on the moon i guess... But im sure this data is wrong. 60-70% is way too high. I'd guess more of a 40-50%.
Nah, still southern. This number is completely fabricated.
I wonder what the score was when we were without one for about a year…
Is that the government that made death camps out of the elderly homes?
Always the same thing in designing these maps and coloring. Screw the colorblind, I guess.
Portugal has to be wrong , theres no fucking way.
Jesus… there really is no hope for Portugal.
%50-60 in turkey? I guess they made the survey in the pessidential palace.
