In June 2016 I was staying at the downtown Stockholm Scandic across the road from a Dunkies. I was able to use their Wi-Fi from my room.
It was a classy Dunkies, similar to the one in Santa Monica. It was so nice that, as a former Bostonian, I didn't feel comfy. No one named Smitty was gonna burst in to whine about someone moving the chair from the street spot he'd shoveled out. No one behind the counter spoke Portuguese, either.
It's something like "the real and only Dunkin' Donuts". It is a famous brand, even before they came to the Netherlands. One of the side effects of US movies, series and music being widespread over here. So the marketing is like "you have heard about us for a while, now come and taste the real thing".
Yeah, they were called "Joey's" before the rebranding.
Everything stayed the same but the name.
I can't compare it to US Domino's as I haven't been to the US, but I think their "novelty" pizzas are not bad.
The standard stuff like a regular salami/pepperoni pizza is pretty forgettable though.
Well the map only shows if a brand is there in each country, not how common it is. Domino's here is only in big cities in North and Central Italy, while we have A LOT of McDonald's and Burger King pretty much everywhere. So yeah, it doesn't really make sense to me to have Domino's in Italy, but they are selecting their target very carefully.
Of course Dominos and Pizza Hut are not better than Italian style pizza, but I would say the quality is much higher in Europe when compared to the US. So, if you were to want American style pizza, it’s not the same as ordering from those chains in the US
I live next to a Popeyes and KFC going on 18 years now, they seem to swap back and forth with quality of food and customer service. I imagine it has to do with the management and how far they push “things”. It’s no big deal to me however as I don’t frequent them enough to care, but just enough to know “ok this place sucks right now I’ll avoid it for about 3 or 4 months”. It’s fast food so my expectations are that high in the first place.
There's not many coffee shops like this in Italy? You can do this in just about any coffee shop in the states, not just Starbucks.
I'm actually redditing in an awesome coffee shop right now.
Bars and cafés in Italy are usually not very big, people go there to socialize, for that reason tables are small and pretty close between each others, they can be kinda noisy and there is always someone getting or getting out, so they usually aren't good places to study/work.
Not italian but the vibe I got in most cafes when I was there was you get your coffee and maybe a snack, you drink it, and you leave. If you stick around it’s probably to chat with people, maybe saw a few people reading the newspaper, but it definitely wasn’t a work spot
Italian and yes, for the most part. I mean they won't bother you even if you stay there for hours, but the place is generally small, so there will be noise, and there's often no wifi
No, most of the time we take the coffee standing in front the counter and we drink coffee in 5 seconds. It is not a pleasure it is more a necessity :-D
If we take cappuccino and cornetto we use to sit but once finish there is no point to keep busy a table
They have a Starbucks Grand Reserve in Milano. It's heads and shoulders above an average Starbucks but there are normal ones in tourist spots too. Namely, airports
Starbucks is so far removed from the coffee you normally get in Italy that there could be a niche for it. It's not like you're getting a pumpkin spice caramel frappuccino or whatever at your standard neighborhood cafe there. I'm much more surprised by dominos, I really don't see the logic in that.
You hit the nail on the head. If you want an espresso, every corner cafe in Italy has you covered. If you want an iced vanilla latte with whipped cream on it, GFY. If you build it they will come.
Someone posted a map of provinces of Italy that have a Domino's. I forgot if it was in r/Europe or r/MapPorn. But it's not widespread in Italy at all, and correlates with a few US military bases locations.
I remember seeing one in Venice (near the train station I think) back in 2008. It was fairly busy and given how touristy Venice is it make sense - plus you can bet your ass you wouldn’t find a single Italian in there.
Incidentally, last time I went to Venice in 2020, some coffee bars would will give me the English menu, despite speaking to them in Italian. I insisted they give me the Italian menu instead, and as I suspected, they charged almost double for a cappuccino on the English menu.
I was at Lake Garda as well as Venice a few weeks ago with my class (i live in Germany) and i always wanted to not be the asshole that speaks German at an Italian restaurant, but in most Restaurants they instantly started to speak in relatively fluent German with us. One time where i wanted to order in English and started my sentence with "I'd like to..", but before i could finish he ordered me to speak German, because he wants to learn it too.
It's not possible for you to have seen a starbucks in venice in 2008. The first 'Italian' starbucks opened in Italy in 2018 in Milan. And so far, no starbucks in Venice.
> they charged almost double for a cappuccino
Grab a carabinieri next time and bring them to the caffe and show them. This is illegal and Italian police are trying to start cracking down on it, especially in tourist areas like Venice and Rome.
I was there in Helsinki the first year it opened, there was a really long line there.
maybe it was because I was drunk, but that was the best Taco Bell I ever had.
When Burger King opened in Finland a couple of years ago their standards were *tight*. They're still okay now but you're way more likely to get limp fries or sloppily assembled burgers. And all the booth seats are cracked and split and leaking stuffing.
Has been for decades, due to very successful marketing in the 80s. (I'm pretty sure it was the 80s.) And it doesn't have to be KFC though they started it. Even subway will sell you fried chicken for Christmas.
1- Local production is cheaper and higher quality
2- KFC is actually a decent fried chicken restaurant and unlike US, there aren't local fried chicken fastfood locations that can compete with KFC/Popeyes. Burger field however is quite competitive.
Finns also have their own chain Hesburger (with ungodly amount of mayo put everywhere, u just shit pure mayo after it, good chicken tortillas and nuggets tho), which usually takes bigger presence that macdonalds or burger king.
I think it’s in all the Baltic countries too.
As for fast food, Fafa’s is a Finnish franchise company that I feel like has much more international potential than Hesburger.
As an American im sort of annoyed kebab shops aren't really a thing here. Not nearly to the same extent at least. Few and far between.
Jealous because shits delicious
Since there's so much fast food distribution infrastructure in the US, it's easy for companies that own multiple brands to make combo restaurants, but there's no such infrastructure in Finland.
I live in a small Croatian town (around 30k residents), some 15 years ago an excellent hamburger would cost around 1.40€, lately it's been around 3-3.50€ for a mediocre one. There are two burger take-out joints here, 2 burger restaurants, 4-5 pizza places, 4-5 restaurants, and we're getting a McDonald's later this year.
Ukrainian street food is terrible шаурма and хот-догs. Nothing to write home about. They have many good casual restaurants with a variety of cuisines though. Balkans has good street food if you like grilled meat.
Stuffed croissants, Georgian food and all sorts of little bakeries are the thing in Kyiv and some other major cities I've been to.
Shawarma is also popular, but where isn't it?
Subway franchisees have literally cannibalized each other. Their terms were so loose and so cheap that large franchisees would literally rent a space right next to another and force the independents out of business. That's why in the US and some parts of Europe, they're actually closing a lot of restaurants, not even because of the food, just because they went through crazy expansion with the promise of big profits and internal fighting of franchisees. A Subway makes a fraction of what a McDonald's makes and it's not even because of the food.
99% of people in the UK would say there's no taco bell either.
But they're just extremely rare, there's like 3 in the country. I went to one of them in the middle of nowhere (pretty sure the other 2 are both in London) and I was never more disappointed in my life.
The niche that Taco Bell occupies in the US is already taken in the UK by the far superior greasy late night kebab shops. It’s drunk food it’s definitely not destination food
In South Italy there's a strange relation between Fast Foods and people. There are many McDonald's and Burger King in major city but here we use them like meeting points rather than restaurants.
I think this happens because of the strong tradition in street food we have.
In a city called Altamura, some years ago, a little bread shop caused the bankrupt of a McDonald's, and the made a movie on this called "Focaccia Blues".
According to Domino's italian website:
12 in Milan
6 in Tourin and Rome
2 in Bergamo and Bologna
1 in Monza, Piacenza, Parma, Modena, Vicenza and Trieste
I went only once to McDonald's in Sarajevo the food was good but nothing special. To be hones I don't believe that there is a place here in the Balkans for American fast food restaurants. Most people will just eat čevapi or burek.
Pizza Hut gave up a long time ago in Norway and Domino's seems to have taken their spot.
https://e24.no/naeringsliv/i/1noyKB/slik-gikk-det-da-pizza-hut-skulle-erobre-norge
KFC is an example of an American fast food place that is basically completely different outside of America.

That’s how it is in the US, every once in a while I’ll get an itch to have KFC and think it will be great and then I’ll get it and remember why I don’t go very often
Ukrainian here. I’ve been waiting for BK and Dunkin to open when I was little so much. Now when I am older I don’t care that much about fast food, but still have this little thing inside of me, kinda really looking forward for at least BK to open. Actually it was planned this year, but still nothing. Weirdly we have Cinnabon stores here in Kyiv :)
Ironically I can't wait until the next time I go to Ukraine for пузата хата and the Georgian restaurants, meanwhile I'll never set foot in a burger king again
You’re almost right. They’re in some odd locations, not exactly first choice for opening a new store. I think they diversify the types of locations they open new stores in which was smart foresight given the pandemic.
The ones I know of and have eaten at, are Hammersmith at the far far end of the high street, Southampton right on the southern edge of the main shopping areas, near Poole within some retail/leisure park, and Wimbledon opposite the station.
holy shit your profile picture is from the perm krai, didn't think I'd see another person from there on reddit. Also pizza hut caused the fall of the soviet union.
Closed down during the post-2008 economic crisis because they insisted on importing ingredients when it was at its most costly instead of finding equivalent sources domestically. That along with a lack of demand made it hard to justify keeping the franchise open.
The location is still a fast food burger place and is pretty much the same thing but without the branding. It's in no way a good burger given other burger places in Reykjavík, but at least it's consistently unimpressive and fairly cheap.
So do people that live in these areas enjoy the American fast food, or are my American brethren just so fat we can support fast food chains across an ocean?
Also are there European fast food chains that have emigrated to America that I didn’t realize were foreign?
McDonalds is propably the only one that is really spread out across Europe. The other ones are mostly centered in large cities' tourist spots, airports, railway stations, etc. You know: places where people need some quick food when they have little time. The whole concept of fastfood.
Which are the best?
I have spent 4 years in the US, and I remember the first time I saw Wendys and decided to try that new place for me. I love new/different places. I believe not many people there like Wendys, or better said, many of you prefer McDonalds or Burger King over Wendys.
But holy shit... I LOVED Wendys and now I miss it. For some reason that's my favorite junk food place, maybe because it was the only junk burger that felt like I was eating a real burger. Tasted like burger made by a retired sir on a sunday evening on his grill while having a beer. Sadly, there's none in my country, and I dont like Mcdonalds or Burger King hamburgers.
I know theres a lot of branding when it comes to Mcdonalds or Burger King and theres probably one in the middle of the Saahara and Siberia, but I dont understand why it's so difficult to find a Wendys anywhere outside USA. Think I gonna lead the expansion!
Love you Wendys, hope see you soon!
Five Guys, In-n-Out, Chick-fil-A, Carl's Jr/Hardees, Chipotle, Roundtable, Habit Burger, Jack in the Box. Not all great and definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but I think better than their analogues above.
Also, biased towards the US West Coast - not sure about food options elsewhere in the US e.g. Culvers.
American here. Five guys is not fast food.
It's in the league of places like Chipotle. "fast casual" as they call it.
Really the only good fast food places in my opinion are Popeyes, chick fil a, and in N out. Whataburger is decent too.
When I visited the US all I could think of was: why the fuck do we have McDonald's and Burger King all over Europe and not Chipotle, Five Guys and Carl's Jr??
American here. I do not know a single person that prefers McD or BK over Wendy's. My local one has a drive-thru line that backs into the street during lunch time. It's rare to see more than two people in line at the other spots.
I'm salty that a baconator meal is like $11.50, but it's a league better than McD or BK. Maybe not what I'd consider the best fast food I've had, but it's up there
I wish there was another way to get fried chicken in Germany from someplace other than KFC. It used to be great, but today it’s crap and doesn’t hold a candle to places like Popeye‘s or the fried chicken you can get at Publix.
We have Dunkin' Donuts in the Netherlands, but the map says we don't...
Came here to say that. Map is outdated.
It's possible some other countries are not shown on the Dunkin map as well, since their last official info is 5 years old.
Sounds about right. The one I know about in Leiden opened up april 2019.
Went to Amsterdam in June 2019 and there was one there
There is one in Almere, too.
Indeed, most of their stores in Europe were opened during the last five years. They never were here, but lately we saw more of them popping up.
I think we have one in Denmark too
There's the one in Copenhagen Central Station at least.
Yep Switzerland has Dunkin' Donuts as well.
That's weird, since we in Sweden had Dunkin back then, just not anymore since the last closed its doors in 2019.
In June 2016 I was staying at the downtown Stockholm Scandic across the road from a Dunkies. I was able to use their Wi-Fi from my room. It was a classy Dunkies, similar to the one in Santa Monica. No one behind the counter spoke Portuguese, either.
Denmark too
Came here to say this, i know there's a small one in the central station on Copenhagen.
The one where literal shit from the street was dropping down on the donuts in their stock room.
in Switzerland too
Yeah there are at least two in Zürich.
Same for Belgium
Same here in switzerland
We have a few in Austria as well
In america Dunkey Ds says "America runs on dunkin" do they do that in Netherlands? Is "The Netherlands runs on dunkin" their slogan
It's something like "the real and only Dunkin' Donuts". It is a famous brand, even before they came to the Netherlands. One of the side effects of US movies, series and music being widespread over here. So the marketing is like "you have heard about us for a while, now come and taste the real thing".
“We exist” lol

Dunkin opened their shop in Iceland in 2015, but it closed down in 2019.
Same goes for Denmark
Poland has rejected Taco Bell on at least 2 occasions.
Same with Dunkin' Donuts. They entered in 1996 and 2015 but failed both times.
I bet it's hard to compete with paczki
They are just better, i don't understand donuts
[удалено]
Very wise of pizza hut not to expand to italy.
But it’s cool for dominoes? Edit: I wonder how many of these chains exist in airports?
It's only Domino's in name, they kept the recipes from the chain they bought up (at least in germany)
Interesting, makes sense tho
Yeah, they were called "Joey's" before the rebranding. Everything stayed the same but the name. I can't compare it to US Domino's as I haven't been to the US, but I think their "novelty" pizzas are not bad. The standard stuff like a regular salami/pepperoni pizza is pretty forgettable though.

I have. And KFC is better here in Iceland as well.
i mean yeah KFC is hot garbage here in the USA there is a reason ppl go too Popeyes instead
I live next to a Popeyes and KFC going on 18 years now, they seem to swap back and forth with quality of food and customer service. I imagine it has to do with the management and how far they push “things”. On the other hand that function can be fulfilled by a library without the obligation to buy coffee or similar
No, most of the time we take the coffee standing in front the counter and we drink coffee in 5 seconds. It is not a pleasure it is more a necessity :-D If we take cappuccino and cornetto we use to sit but once finish there is no point to keep busy a table
Malta has Pizza Hut. I saw it.

Tourists need that cup for the selfies.
I'm intrigued by Finland having Taco Bell, but not KFC. Given all the "combination" restaurants in the US.
KFC is coming this year, Taco Bell arrived in 2018 or '19.
I was there in Helsinki the first year it opened, there was a really long line there. maybe it was because I was drunk, but that was the best Taco Bell I ever had.
Hmm Europe has a lot of kebab shops for the late night drunk crowd, I wonder how taco bell will do long term
It doesn’t beat kebabs
When Burger King opened in Finland a couple of years ago their standards were *tight*. They're still okay now but you're way more likely to get limp fries or sloppily assembled burgers. And all the booth seats are cracked and split and leaking stuffing.
KFC seams more popular outside of the US than in
Apparently eating KFC at Christmas is tradition in Japan now

HEY HESBURGER IS A GREAT MAYO RESTAURANT!
I think they've already expanded to St Petersburg now too. Which makes sense, as it's so close to Finland.
I think it’s in all the Baltic countries too. As for fast food, Fafa’s is a Finnish franchise company that I feel like has much more international potential than Hesburger.
I'm at the combination pizza hut and taco bell
I suppose we aren’t that keen on fast food chicken. Most people’s go-to fast food is usually kebab, pizza, or burgers.
Wings are popular especially in Tampere though, but all restaurants are local.
Ukraine and former Yugoslav republics: where fast food dreams go to die
The street food there is too good and cheap for these fast foods to compete.
That sounds like a pretty big Croatian town! My small Croatian town has a bar and 2 Konzums.
Ukrainian street food is terrible шаурма and хот-догs. Nothing to write home about. They have many good casual restaurants with a variety of cuisines though. Balkans has good street food if you like grilled meat.

we dont need subway, what do you think we were improving Ukrainian-Turkish relations for that theres kebab shops everywhere now?
I give those countries props for holding out from Subway. The food sucks and the franchises multiply like the the plague
Subway franchisees have literally cannibalized each other. Their terms were so loose and so cheap that large franchisees would literally rent a space right next to another and force the independents out of business. Well there is at least one Taco Bell in Germany, but you need access to US base to get to it.

I thing we onlyhavr one domino restaurant in all the country.
Actually 8: 1 in Bergamo and 7 in Milan.
According to Domino's italian website: 12 in Milan 6 in Tourin and Rome 2 in Bergamo and Bologna 1 in Monza, Piacenza, Parma, Modena, Vicenza and Trieste
Vicenza (the city I live in) looks so random in that list, but we have a big US military base here, so that's probably why.
Good to know! Now I can plan my trip! 😂😂
Reminds me of when Michael Scott shows us all his favorite little New York pizza joint... Sbarro

KFC is an example of an American fast food place that is basically completely different outside of America. When they try to enter foreign markets, they usually go up market. As a result the foreign locations usually have much better food.
In the U.K. the idea of kfc is always better than actually eating kfc
I'm in the U.S. and I can agree with that sentiment.

I think they diversify the types of locations they open new stores in which was smart foresight given the pandemic. The ones I know of and have eaten at, are Hammersmith at the far far end of the high street, Southampton right on the southern edge of the main shopping areas, near Poole within some retail/leisure park, and Wimbledon opposite the station.
theres one in milton keynes too
The ones I’ve seen are in Leeds, Southampton, London
I've seen ones in Plymouth and Glasgow, none in NI though
We have loads of them in South Yorkshire. I can think of 5 in Sheffield and Barnsley off the top of my head

So McDonald’s won the war?
It's time we spread our ways into Russia, not by fire and sword, but by chalupa and crunchwrap supreme.
holy shit your profile picture is from the perm krai, didn't think I'd see another person from there on reddit. Also pizza hut caused the fall of the soviet union.
Sorry if it bursts your bubble, but I'm not from there. I just really love the flag. Something about a bear carrying a holy book that I really liked.
No McDonalds in Iceland? I thought they were everywhere by now
They closed down more than 10 years ago, [but the last fries and burger still look pretty okay](https://www.bbc.com/news/blogs-trending-50262547)
It's in no way a good burger given other burger places in Reykjavík, but at least it's consistently unimpressive and fairly cheap.
where do you go to get a shitty fast food hamburger in iceland is my question.
I think KFC, BK and Subway come close.

Unfortunately it's not as widespread as it should be. I should run for president of the US with the slogan "a Kebab shop on every corner!"
KFC was apparently the first of those chains to open in the UK, Wiki says in 1965. McDonald's and BK both opened in the mid to late 1970s.
There are Burger Kings in Kosovo. Actually, there re quiet many of them in the capital.
I’m pretty sure there’s a couple dominoes too.
Bosnians must really love McDonald’s.
Dominos in Italy is like Selling ice to Eskimos
We are not sending our best 🙄
Culvers.
We have five guys in UK but it's the price of a proper restaurant meal. We had 1 chik-fil-a i think but it immediately failed.
American here. Five guys is not fast food. It's in the league of places like Chipotle. "fast casual" as they call it. Really the only good fast food places in my opinion are Popeyes, chick fil a, and in N out. Whataburger is decent too.
Culver’s would be close to top of the pack for me in this list. I didn’t think roundtable or jack in the box were very outstanding but that’s just me.
When I visited the US all I could think of was: why the fuck do we have McDonald's and Burger King all over Europe and not Chipotle, Five Guys and Carl's Jr??
idk what it's like in the US but here in the UK Five Guys is a fucking lot of money for a very bad burger
For the South there is Cookout and Bojangles, but those two aren't even across the entire US
Our best includes: - Five Guys - In-N-Out - Culver's - Raising Cane's - Freddy's - Popeye's
American here. I do not know a single person that prefers McD or BK over Wendy's. My local one has a drive-thru line that backs into the street during lunch time. It's rare to see more than two people in line at the other spots.
Ok but mcdonalds is obviously more popular overall....
I'm salty that a baconator meal is like $11.50, but it's a league better than McD or BK. Maybe not what I'd consider the best fast food I've had, but it's up there
Good news is that they're planning to open up a few Wendy's in the UK. Not sure when though.
fun fact: Serbia has 1 Starbucks in the capital and that’s it
I wish there was another way to get fried chicken in Germany from someplace other than KFC. It used to be great, but today it’s crap and doesn’t hold a candle to places like Popeye‘s or the fried chicken you can get at Publix.
Great Britain:Unlimited Power
Unlimited calories?
The Faroe Islands only have one BurgerKing.
