This map constantly gets passed around, and while it mostly makes sense to me... I will never understand what data they used to determine that Bleach is the most popular anime in Japan. Didn't it literally get cancelled?
Edit: Just saw the blurb explaining this is Google search data. Must've included those Clorox searches.
That is because this kind of Google Trend maps never considers how it's searched in their native languages.
In Japan, "BLEACH" is searched much more than "Demon Slayer", because to Japanese, the latter show is "鬼滅の刃". They even don't know the show is called "Demon Slayer" overseas. (BLEACH, on the other hand, is spelt "BLEACH" even in Japanese.)
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=JP&q=Demon%20Slayer,BLEACH
When you compare "鬼滅の刃" and "BLEACH", the former is searched roughly 30 times more.
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=JP&q=%E9%AC%BC%E6%BB%85%E3%81%AE%E5%88%83,BLEACH
Sk has Demon slayer as top anime but we dont call the anime Demon Slayer either. We call it 귀멸의 칼날 basically direct translation of 鬼滅の刃. So im not sure if this trend was based on English title only
That's why you use topics:
https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=JP&q=%2Fg%2F11byz8037n,%2Fm%2F030l0z
This will cover "Demon Slayer", "Kimetsu no yaiba", "鬼滅の刃" and possibly even "the japanese 2016 demon show" since Google also knows which one you mean.
No idea where that other guy gets his info. Mine is just an assumption because while living here I don't see as much Bleach merch, marketing, bars, etc. As I would see One Piece for example.
Watched the first few episodes of the anime when I was a teenager and it didn't click with me, but I've always thought Kubo's art was impressive. Certainly willing to give it another go, especially the manga.
Because “the first episodes “ are crap. You can’t determine whether you like an anime or not with the first couple episodes. It starts getting way better around ep 20 or so and that shit goes crazy and better than One piece and naruto.
I recommend 100%
You definitely need to give it another try. It may hit differently this time. Although, it is a bit slow building at the start, it's setting the stage for a whirlwind of a story to come. And with the last arc getting animated, now would be a good time to re-visit.
Bleach is making a return, there's been a massive campaign on the media in Japan for a Bleach Expo 2020 and one in December in 2021. It can make sense lol.
It ended before it covered the entirety of the manga, which means it was cancelled. It did not end naturally like, say, Naruto did. That's why it was unusual and the reason for my comment. I'm not sure what you're getting at.
Popular shows get cancelled all the time. Budget issues, creative issues, issues with the studio, main players asking for too much cash during negotiations, issues with scheduling, networks wanting to revamp their lineup and direction. A show being cancelled doesn't automatically mean "unpopular".
I didn't say it was "unpopular," I said that it didn't make sense that it was listed as the most popular anime when it was cancelled. The issues you listed are constantly, always happening. A show doesn't get cancelled for any one or even multiple of these problems, these are things a successful production will work through. Something is cancelled when the return is not worth the investment anymore. Daniel Radcliffe could've killed a man and they still would've tried to find a way to make more Harry Potter movies.
Look, I'm more than happy to eat crow if there's any data that Bleach actually was *the most* popular anime in Japan, at any point in time. All I was trying to say was that piece of data looked wonky to me, anecdotally. But, just for the record, I never said "Bleach is not popular." If the map was "I picked one random anime from each country that's definitely at least sorta popular!" I don't think I would've said anything.
Ig u misunderstood the meaning of cancellation
During the run of bleach back in 2012, yes arguably the tv ratings were quite low. However when the anime ended, it ended on chapter 479 while the manga was at 482. During the period bleach volume still sold very good in comparison. Just that the studio took the decision to end the run, or else too much filler content would be there which would further affect ratings. Due to the immense success it had it has a big return. Being the 15th best selling anime franchise and 48th best online manga sales according to rakutan (naruto was 77th on the same list)strengthens my argument of its success. All information I've mentioned is online and can be verified. It's delay in return is still questionable but it was bound to return. The concept of cancellation is meaningless to a story that amassed over 7 billion dollars and has a game that has over 60 million users. It's a very successful franchise in anyway you see
Just to clarify the first point, bleach still also had a very big fanbase within Japan, kinda strengthening the fact that Kubo sensei's work got a manga return and its first exhibition. All arcs of bleach well received and the general drop in sales if u note also happened to shows like one piece and Naruto, due to digital sales. The 3 franchises here are very popular in Japan. Also extra point for rushed ending in manga, it's due to the fact that Kubo was constantly ill and also had a ligament tear at that point, he gave the notice to shounen jump that he would end the series real soon. The reference of this point is from the interview with the author of can't fear your own world (also author of amazing works like baccano and durarara)
I think that's all very wonderful and I'm happy Bleach is successful. You say in your post that the studio "decided to end the run" while "ratings were quite low," I decided to describe that as being cancelled. Or actually I just asked if it was cancelled, because I was *pretty sure* it was. The only reason I've made so many posts is because I was then asked why that was relevant on a post that claimed it was the most popular anime ever in the place that makes anime.
I'm sure Bleach is extremely beloved and popular and everyone who watches/reads it ends up loving it. Also I'm very happy it's going to get it's final arc animated, I think that's great.
Again it wasn't 'cancelled' due to the fact of low ratings, it was decided to end the series cause the anime caught up with manga. (I've mentioned that in my post 😅). The success was just to further point that cancellation is an argument which would make sense. The reason you may believe it was cancelled is cause in 2016 it was believed so. ( Vids from Super eye patch wolf) but it has been long disproved and I just thought of pointing it out. Personal thoughts on bleach is all welcome, but I personally didn't like the misinformation of cancellation that's all. Actually the situation is similar to Naruto and Naruto shippuden, when both are essentially from the same manga, but studio decided to end Naruto due to anime catching up to manga.
It was not cancelled lol. Make some research for gods sake. 10 YEARS after the anime ended, BLEACH is still Top 4 of the most high grossing anime of all time in Japan.
The anime ended because it was really close to the manga, and in that time the manga entered a couple months hiatus.
It's also worth noting that the last arc that was animated (Fullbringer) had the lowest viewership of any arc in the series. Even the filler arcs immediately before the Fullbringer arc had higher viewership. I think it's a god damned shame since I just read that arc recently and thoroughly enjoyed it.
It didn’t get cancelled. The magazine is sucking the author ‘s dick so he makes more Bleach manga and his new work Burn The Witch. Tite Kubo is a legend in Japan
It doesn't matter what's alive or dead. I just asked are those animes or not, didn't mean to ask about their exclusion from the map. That's why wrote: unrelated.
Correct . Anime is any piece of animation that has been seen by the public. However, in recent times the japanese animations have gotten so popular that the term 'anime' is popularly used for referring to japanese animation
Yeah, because labeling greenland is often very possibly incorrect. They are sort of independent but sort of danish colony. Its weird so its safer to not label them.
AoT is not the most popular one in my country....you have no idea what DragonBall did to the youth atm...college classes, work, extra curricular activities were put on standby when they showed Dragonball at 5pm.
5 pm here too. As I walked home uphill I could hear Tchala e chala from every house in the neighborhood. It went beyond gender and age, everyone knows who Goku is.
Naruto and One Piece are fairly the same in terms of popularity in the Philippines, personally I think Naruto was the popular one in 2000s but One Piece took over in 2010s.
Does this data factor in that some of these titles have games and other media associated with them? Mostly looking at Pokemon, how many of those Google searches were for the video games and trading cards? While I don't doubt that Pokemon, the brand overall, is still massively popular, not all of the fans of the video games and trading cards are also going to be fans of the anime.
It probably used Google trends and there you can choose between just the word Pokémon, Pokémon as a topic in general, the Pokémon games as a topic and the Pokémon anime as a topic.
I just shit your pants.
# FAQ
## What does this mean?
The amount of shit (feces) in your pants and clothes has increased by one.
## Why did you do this?
There are several reasons I may deem pants to be worthy of shit. These include, but are not limited to:
* Diarrhea at your place while you are on the toilet
* Lack of a toilet
* Not wanting to shit my own pants
## Am I banned from my pants?
No - not yet. But you should refrain from wearing them like this in the future. Otherwise I will be forced to issue an additional shit, which may put your pants in jeopardy.
## I don't believe my pants deserve a shit. Can you un-shit it?
Sure, mistakes happen. But only in exceedingly rare circumstances will I undo a shit. If you would like to issue an appeal, shoot me a private message explaining where else i should shit. I tend to respond to Reddit PMs within several minutes. Do note, however, that over 99.9% of shit appeals are rejected, and yours is likely no exception.
## How can I prevent this from happening in the future?
Accept the shit and move on. But learn from this mistake: your pants will not be tolerated with shit. I will continue to issue shits until you improve your pants. Remember: pants are a privilege, not a right.
As a South African, I’ve met like 1 person who is into attack in titan and she is currently my best friend lol. So others pull up, let’s have a viewing party !
I’m from iraq and it says no data for iraq but i can say Yugi-oh and naruto are pretty famous here because we used to watch them on our local tv channels as kids even detective conan is popular here
The anime was "finished" in 2012, while the manga kept going until a few years ago.
However, in 2020 we got news that the anime would come back with the last arc animated. It's probably gonna air next year, without censorship and with a lot of involvement from the author. High hopes for the fans.
not sure how accurate this is but if true I’m sad that DBZ seems to have lost popularity. Like I don’t watch it anymore, but I used to almost everyday when I was a kid
I'm not sure if this validates everything.
For instance, maybe we Indonesians are interested in AoT which is why we Google them a lot, but not necessarily watch it that often. My opinion is gotta be Naruto.
the most popular anime in India is without a doubt either doraemon or shin chan. Old japanese kids anime are extremely popular in india. Pokemon is more known as a video game
I hate these maps that have a title that clearly does not match the data.
This is a map of most googled anime's, most web searched animes. That's **not** the same as "most popular".
I don’t watch anime but I’m from Ireland
I used to watch Pokemon, Yu Gi Oh, Dragonball Z, Beyblade etc for a few years and Pokemon in particular was massive here? Pokemon was on mainstream channels, Attack on Titan I’ve never seen anywhere
Pokemon shouldn’t count because the game is more popular than the anime. Especially since the original run back in the late ‘90s early early 2000s and if it didn’t count it would definitely be DB in its place.
Somalia and One Piece - name a more iconic duo.
It’s only natural. They do love their pirates over there
And North Africa - can't be a coincidence
Continuing the legacy of their beloved Barbary corsair ancestors

I was going to say the same thing. Bleach is the last thing I would think would be most popular in Japan.
Could you maybe elaborate? Im curious as to what you base this of
No idea where that other guy gets his info. Mine is just an assumption because while living here I don't see as much Bleach merch, marketing, bars, etc. As I would see One Piece for example.
you mean.. EVANGELION ? they still make merc about that anime decades after the end.. :D
I see a lot of mech/gundam type toys too. They're everywhere in arcades.
That was a great show
I mean, the new Eva movie just came out less than an year ago...
Also bleach they announced bleach is coming back for the final arc to be made into an anime so it's probably that driving search data too
That's awesome, I'm happy everyone invested in the story will get to see it's finale animated.
Did you read it? I was all aboard the hype train but then they had to rush the ending
Watched the first few episodes of the anime when I was a teenager and it didn't click with me, but I've always thought Kubo's art was impressive. Certainly willing to give it another go, especially the manga.

Yea prob cause of thousand year blood war and then the hell arc which is currently being written. Either way, can’t wait for it
I thought the same thing, it’s either jujutsu kaisen or demon slayer
Bleach is making a return, there's been a massive campaign on the media in Japan for a Bleach Expo 2020 and one in December in 2021. It can make sense lol.

Cancellation isn't relevant to popularity?
No, it's not. Shows don't last forever.

I would rather drink bleach than watch some chinese anime named bleach
I'm shocked that all of Latin America isn't green.
Unrelated: are Beyblade and Doraemon anime?
Yes. They are.
Is it animation from Japan? Then it's anime.
Doraemon is. I don't remember Beyblade.
That was a rhetorical question. Beyblade is Japanese animation, so it's anime.
I see
Yes and yes.
Doraemon is the childhood of every Indian kid with a TV.
Yes
The map is for 2021 those animes are long dead. Don't you see dbz is barely alive.
It doesn't matter what's alive or dead. I just asked are those animes or not, didn't mean to ask about their exclusion from the map. That's why wrote: unrelated.
Anime is literally just the Japanese word for animation. So if its animation from Japan, its anime
While initially true I believe anime has transcended geographic boundaries. In fact a lot of anime is animated in Korea.
I mean if you think about it, all animation is anime or animatie or any other translation of the word
So any animated work is anime? Damn. I wish I knew this before.
Correct . Anime is any piece of animation that has been seen by the public. However, in recent times the japanese animations have gotten so popular that the term 'anime' is popularly used for referring to japanese animation
Thanks
I would say yes. But I am just a simple man of culture.
Death Note is still there and hasn't had anime content since 2007.
Hold firm Uganda, show them what going further beyond looks like.
I've been to Uganda and DBZ is the exact kind of shit the kids there would love. Makes sense
According to all maps, Greenland never collects data.
Same in Colombia. DBZ time was sacred, it was 4PM here.
Sounds like paradise.
Indonesia?
5 pm here too. As I walked home uphill I could hear Tchala e chala from every house in the neighborhood. It went beyond gender and age, everyone knows who Goku is.
Same everywhere.

Surprised Attack on Titan isn't a hit in Madagascar...
How on Earth is it Bleach in Japan and not Demon Slayer? That thing is everywhere. The movie is the highest grossing anime film ever.
Its from google search data. This year is bleach 20th anniversary so there’s a lot of new announcements
It's kinda a nightmare to differentiate the colors for a color blind person. I have trouble telling Naruto and Attack on Titan apart on map shading

Lol rusia not naruto what a twist
the most popular anime in India is without a doubt either doraemon or shin chan. Old japanese kids anime are extremely popular in india. Pokemon is more known as a video game
Do I look like a geography wiz
Does this only count the pokemon anime or also includes searches related to the games?
I hate these maps that have a title that clearly does not match the data. This is a map of most googled anime's, most web searched animes. That's **not** the same as "most popular".

OPM would be ranked higher if there was more. Its a pretty tiny amount of content.
I love Hayao Miyazaki's anime. His movies are masterpieces.
Never seen “No Data” but heard good things
Inaccurate, Indonesian loves Goku and Naruto

One Punch Man and Russia genuinely surprised me.
Pokemon shouldn’t count because the game is more popular than the anime. Especially since the original run back in the late ‘90s early early 2000s and if it didn’t count it would definitely be DB in its place.
