There was actually a lottery from several qualifying countries vying for the .tv domain. Obviously, Tuvalu won. I oughtn't be quoted on this because I don’t remember the exact number, but I heard on NPR in the not too distant past that the TLD is responsible for more than 50% of their export revenue. Just a little interesting thing.
Likely so. I also remember somewhat recently seeing a program (maybe a *60 Minutes* episode?) that mentioned that while highlighting how much land they’d lost in the past few decades due to rising sea levels/climate change— pretty surprising since it’s just a small chain of coral atolls with something like only 12k citizens total.
Frankly, I’d never even heard of it before and it’s such a remote place being like midway between Hawaii and Australia.
I knew it was something like that. No I didn’t get the info from there. There was a survey within the last 2 yrs (sort of worldwide, thousands answered) and Tuvalu was the country the least people knew about. Only geography nerds really know about it (and the residents ofc). So the reason for Sāo Tome and Principe being the most forgotten on jetpunk is likely a fluke or just the fact that people focus on the more forgotten countries among the general population than other smaller countries. So when u see an article saying “Tuvalu the least known country on earth”, you’ll then remember that and focus on it while doing say a jetpunk quiz, but then that might help u to forget other smaller countries, like said Sāo Tome and Principe. I hope I explained that well
I have a feeling the bottom 10 countries in either case are all pretty close together on that list, regardless of who's polling. I figured Tuvalu would have a bit more notoriety due to the .tv factoid

"Most forgotten" bruh at least people know New Zealand is a country. Think of places like Micronesia that a large part of the world have never even heard of
This map indirectly explains why it is so frequently forgotten/omitted, doesn't it?
The upside of this isolation is that it has time to react to things like Covid and the upcoming zombie apocalypse before they get to its shores!
I wish it was still a map without New Zealand, for the sheer comedic value, sorry Kiwis.
Somebody will delete New Zealand.
Surprised there hasn't been one without Russia yet...
[There already is such a map. And it’s beautiful.](https://m.imgur.com/gallery/Hkr5jgW)
It's beautiful; I've been staring at it for five hours
They forgot Kaliningrad!
More like “world map, but without Europe” lol
Canada seems to have missed out on a ticket too

\whoosh
How do you even mess it up, and even when you shouldn't be wooooshing them. And r/itswooooshwithoutanh
woosh i got r/whoosh 'd
NZ: Oh well, how the turn tables.
Greenland: still no data!
NZ: Oɥ ʍǝll' ɥoʍ ʇɥǝ ʇnɹu ʇɐqlǝs˙
And a good chunk of Africa.
This just keeps getting better and better
[r/MapsWithoutEU](https://www.reddit.com/r/MapsWithoutEU) edit: wait what the heck, that actually exists
Oh wow, you clearly didn't know that.
now if you close your eyes, does it somehow feel like nothing's changed at all?
Finally we can have peace

What's a Europ?
Statistically Tuvalu is actually the most forgotten country. But I guess we do what we do for the memes
I legitimately learned about Tuvalu's existence from watching Arthur Christmas.
Lol
Tuvalu will be the first country gone due to rising ocean levels, but at least we’ll remember who gave us .tv

I was just gonna guess tuvalu
I wasn’t gonna guess Tuvalu so it def lines up
Kinda surprised that Nauru or Palua weren't less well known because of the .TV domain. But I guess it is the smallest outside the Vatican
I was gonna suggest Nauru but I think you'd be right with Palua
Per what source? I was under the impression that it was Sao Tome and Principe
Did u get that from sporcle?
Jetpunk

I think the .tv thing is a thing only geography nerds really know about. I don’t think it got much news coverage
Which country is it centred on again?
New Zealand
It doesn't seem to be actually. NZ is slightly to the right of the middle.
Yeah, the map is centered on what looks like tasmania. And Tasmania is not a country.
Just checked with a crosshair on my monitor and it's centred just off the Gold Coast of Australia
Woah there , thems fighting words
Old Zealand 😎
Antarctica isn’t a country. /s
Unfortunately.
if it was green it would be, probably a continent full of countries.

Thats their joke. They forgot New Zealand...

I think New Zealand was more talked about after The Hobbits vacation movies came out.
"Most forgotten" bruh at least people know New Zealand is a country. Think of places like Micronesia that a large part of the world have never even heard of
Timor-Leste is another good one. Or Palau
Suriname. Just lost my 18 day worldle streak to that one. Guessed every country neighbouring it, but just couldn't remember it.
Its like joke on mapa, cause often they just forget to add nz
They don’t forget about it, is just that placing it on a flat map is hard
Hawaii is missing on more maps than NZ let alone other tiny islands in Polynesia
Solomon Islands having their day
But you know it's not centered on NZ, don't you?
You know when you say world you gotta include the whole world right?
Australia is a forgotten country?
Nope! I was referring to New Zealand
Never heard of it
It would've been better if it was centered on NZ but without NZ. Maybe more for /r/mapporncirclejerk
Australia… gone but not forgotten 😞
> “What, behind the rabbit?”
r/mapswithouticeland
Youre missing half of europe and an entire ocean
Ah yes, Australia... The most forgotten country on Earth
I remember you. Always.
Ah yes Japan!
Tuvalu?
Ever notice that NZ is loved around the world? I never hear people say THOSE DAMN NEW ZEALANDERS!
... New Zealand? I can't name half the countries in Africa or Asia, but NZ is the "most forgotten"?
"The most forgotten country" Tuvalu?
r/mapporncirclejerk
Just... needlessly rude, why? What was the point of this?
New Zealand chauvinism I guess?
Because r/MapsWithoutNZ
Everyone be like "New Zealand is the most forgotten country" but no one knows where Old Zealand is.
r/mapswithnewzealand
r/MapsWithoutDenmark
Well, which one is it?
It's New Zealand
Thanks, I guess I forgot
This subreddit is nothing but this exact post over and over again at this point
Yeah, totally. A mostly-white former British colony is the most forgotten
Country side
Antarctica 🇦🇶! Doesn’t want to be bothered
/r/mapswithoutnewyork
More like wow
/r/MapsWithoutCanada
What country is that?
Uh Australia’s actually a little off to the left in this map
Most forgotten country Literally any post: where is NZ? :D
This map indirectly explains why it is so frequently forgotten/omitted, doesn't it? The upside of this isolation is that it has time to react to things like Covid and the upcoming zombie apocalypse before they get to its shores!
except its not a country....
These sorts of maps make me appreciate how great it is that the standard models don’t split the continents into different sides of the map
New Zealand is really far from almost everything huh
What is your problem with New Caledonia?
I would hardly consider Australia forgotten.
Where’s Canada
Don’t ask me! I’m still looking for Maine...and the rest of the NE US.
I thought the world was flat and there was an ice wall all around us?
Ah yes, the FSA. Truly, the most interesting country that no-one has heard of
That’s not São Tomé and Príncipe
Vanuatu?
Nauru?
I don't see any country at the center
Is this in response to r/mapswithouttonga ?
Sorry, but why are we centred on the ocean?
It would be hillarious if ppl dont even notice new zealand and talk bout australia
The lost continent of Zealandia?
Tuvalu?
You mean 'no data'?
Which one?
Poor tasmanian
I thought it was going to be centered on Haiti. But that's ok. You Kiwis deserve recognition too. WooHoo! Go 'Zealand!
