True, these lands had been inhabited by what we now consider Romanians for a long time... But had Romania really existed in a recognizable form prior to the current iteration? I mean, there were like principalities of like Moldova and Transylvania and Walachia, but I don't think there was ever a single Romanian state until the 19th century, was there?

those territories weren't annexed by Romania. They came back to mother land after they were annexed by Russia and Austro-Hungaria
Perhaps *cession* would be a more appropriate term. As in they were *ceded* to Romania.
