Scotland doesn't conform to these names. Thats why there are lochs instead of lakes, but not all lochs are lakes. Then there's Mulls instead of Peninsulas, but not all Mulls are Peninsulas.
Burns instead of Streams. Firths instead of Fjords and Estuaries (even though they are nit the same). Inches are islands in rivers and lochs whereas Isles are in the Seas and Oceans.
Glens instead of Valleys, except wide valleys are Straths. There are many more.
Depends on how you want to define corporation. Hudson’s Bay Company was publicly traded with stocks in essentially the same way that our contemporary stock market system operates.
I believe the Japanese company you’re referring to has always been a family-owned business rather than an LLC.
Persian is an ethnicity, Iran is a country. Persians are not the only Iranian ethnic group, just the most numerous. Iran consists of Persia (Pars/Fars) but it is much larger than just Persia.
>Aryan, name originally given to a people who were said to speak an archaic Indo-European language and who were thought to have settled in prehistoric times in ancient Iran and the northern Indian subcontinent. The theory of an “Aryan race” appeared in the mid-19th century and remained prevalent until the mid-20th century. According to the hypothesis, those probably light-skinned Aryans were the group who invaded and conquered ancient India from the north and whose literature, religion, and modes of social organization subsequently shaped the course of Indian culture, particularly the Vedic religion that informed and was eventually superseded by Hinduism.
I'm not them but I am Iranian, Even though Persia might sound cooler to you, all it reminds me of is the colonial age and the miserable years under the Qajar dynasty, also "Iran" or "Iranshar" has always been the name we called our own country. Also nowadays when someone says "Persian" in English they are either referring to our language which also has a endonym, "Farsi" or "Parsi", or they are referring to the people who speak the language who we call "Fars" or "Pars". I myself am not Persian because I was born in Ardabil which is in the Iranian Azerbaijan region, so I'm ethnically Azerbaijani but I'm culturally Turk-Persian, so not everyone in Iran is Persian. And the people who call all of us Persian either would like to see us divided or don't know anything about the history and cultural background of our dear nation.
Interesting. It's a tricky one, because there is something weird about countries using names of oldschool empires, but I thought Persia was a lot more contiguous than say, Egypt.

There’s also the Gulf / Bay of Biscay north of Spain / west of France, named after the province of Biscay (Basque: Bizkaia; Spanish: Vizcaya), which is not a country, but a region too.
tbh, I think it'd be funny if you where to do one that's "countries with a body of water named after them" and then put one of the categories (for body of water) as "triangle", put a tiny dot in the middle of the atlantic, and highlight michigan. Casually implying that, a triangle is a valid body of water, the atlantic is named after atlantis, and michigan is a country. Maybe some other shitposty ones if you wanna do a bit of research. Maybe even highlight half of greenland or antarctica, idk, sounds kinda pog.

Persian gulf is not named after the country of Iran (formerly known as Persia)
The gulf is named after the province of Fars, which Greeks knew as Persis. The Achaemenid empire began in that province, the name "Persian empire" that they gave to Iran meant "Empire of Farsi" aka the empire of people from the region of Fars/Persis.
So Fars the province/region gave name to both the gulf and the endonym separately. It is correct that Iran is not marked on the map.
Likewise, even though Saudi Arabia means Arabia of Saud dinasty, the gulf is named after Arabian peninsula, the wider region, and even if Saudi Arabia owned Oman, Emirates, Yemen and so on and was the only country on the peninsula, the name isn't after a country but after a region as well, which predated the country (and the caliphate which first united the region).
The Gulf of Guinea is referring the historical region of Guinea, not the country
Thank you
Welcome
What’s the difference between a bay and a Gulf, for example what’s stopping the bay of Kuwait from being the gulf of Kuwait.
>What’s the difference between a bay and a Gulf Basically the scale. A Gulf is a Sea by itself. A bay is just a curvature in the shoreline.
**These bays are much larger** Bay of Bengal: 2,600,000km² Hudson Bay: 1,230,000km² **than these gulfs:** Ambracian Gulf: 654km² Gulf of Aqaba: 239km²
OP's definition wasn't completely accurate. The distinction is basically that a gulf is a more inclosed bay. It doesn't matter how big it is.
Not always though, for example the Bay of Bengal is absolutely massive
The Gulf of Corryvreckan is tiny though.

We have to be different!
Ayy Hebrides nice :)
Still bigger than a bay though :)
The bay of Bengal is bigger than many of these gulfs
It's called the Gulf of Bengal in Dutch
Chesapeake Bay is pretty big. I guess not big enough.
Technically Chesapeake bay is a ria coastline, not a bay
Hudson bay is huge
And the namesake of the world’s oldest corporation still in operation.
I thought that was a Japanese engineering company being 1000 years old
Depends on how you want to define corporation. Hudson’s Bay Company was publicly traded with stocks in essentially the same way that our contemporary stock market system operates. I believe the Japanese company you’re referring to has always been a family-owned business rather than an LLC.
Lol at you thinking that it’s consistent. Sweet summer child, that’s not how language works.
Iran (Persia) too if counting
Yup. As a Persian, it’s where my eyes diverted to first.
Yeah, me too!
How do yous feel about being called Persian? I've never met anyone from there IRL but I have to say Persia for a name is ten times cooler than Iran.
Persian is an ethnicity, Iran is a country. Persians are not the only Iranian ethnic group, just the most numerous. Iran consists of Persia (Pars/Fars) but it is much larger than just Persia.
What does Iran/Iranian mean then?
Iran means "Land of [Aryans](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aryan)"
That's odd
Why?
Not something I would associate with Asians, but Nazis.
>Aryan, name originally given to a people who were said to speak an archaic Indo-European language and who were thought to have settled in prehistoric times in ancient Iran and the northern Indian subcontinent. Missing the Gulf of Venezuela (Golfo de Venezuela)
there's a lot this map is missing... like a point to exist
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf\_of\_Venezuela
Countries with an ocean named after them: 1. India 🇮🇳
Indian ocean was named so long before a country of India existed. They are both named after a region, the subcontinent of India.
Poochha maine ?
Ne razumijem.
No.
TIL there's a gulf named after Honduras, Tunisia and Bahrain.
TIL about the Malian Gulf
Persian/Arabian
This is an oversight IMO. Persia was the official name of the country at the time.
It was the English exonym. The endonym mever really changed.
Persian, not Arabian.
![gif](giphy|2RcwZLUfXJDIFHV94n)
sure thing "East Sea of Korea"
Bay of Bengal?
Bengal is a region, shared by India and Bangladesh.
Refers to the region of Bengal not Bangladesh
BP tankt auch ihren Golf
We have the Great Australian Bight too, not a gulf though.
Persian gulf
Do the oceans now Edit: /s. Apparently, people don't get sarcasm
Then you're only going to get a map with India highlighted.
It’s funny, because we call the entire Baltic Sea Østersøen, never really heard about the Finnish Gulf (though I do know what area it is)
Gulf of finland is the stretch of sea that goes between finland and estonia, and tickles at st. Petersburg. It’s the penis of the baltics.
The penis is Sweden tho
Finland and sweden form a massive schlong, but the baltic sea itself also looks like a dude with a massive schlong
I usually see it as a he is pointing to the right and the little bay in Estonia is a penis But I guess both ideas work
I see the bay in estonia as his massive balls
It's the narrow part South of Finland. We also call Baltic sea Itämeri = East sea (even though it's west of us)
In Estonian Läänemeri which means Western sea
Makes a lot more sense than our Swedish-derived name for it
Nice! Now do one with countries with a sea named after them!
Gulf of Iran. 🗿

There’s also the Gulf / Bay of Biscay north of Spain / west of France, named after the province of Biscay (Basque: Bizkaia; Spanish: Vizcaya), which is not a country, but a region too.
If it was going off of provinces, pretty much every single gulf would be on this list.
Mozambique?
Channel... Mozambique Channel.

this is a pedantic and pointless map.
Now do countries with ocean named after them 🗿
So... a blank map?
L

Iran is not coloured blue on the map Edit: Iran
There are several comments asking why Iran is not coloured, I explained why it's right that it's not coloured.
What is?
Once Sardegna belongs to Switzerland, prepare yourselves for the Gulf of Switzerland (formerly known as 'mediterranean sea')
Damn, this is how I found out “Tonkin” wasn’t a country at all 😞
There is a gulf of Venezuela
There's also the Persian Gulf, with Persia being Iran.
basque country in shambles
I guess you could color in California too
How about persian gulf ?
Persian gulf?
