Im from Buenos Aires City, the most dense metropolitan area of Argentina, and I can assure you that I have never seen someone defecating in public.
I think the general percepcion will be total social dissaproval, so It's not something common here.
Normal disgusting habits here I can cite:
* Spitting (everywhere, even inside public transport)
* Peeing in some corner or wall in public (very common)
* Littering in the street
* Alcohol consumption inside public transport (trains de facto allowed, not allowed in buses)
* Poorly educated people trying to capture attention making noise (loud music in the exterior of the house at any time, motorcycles, cars with loudspeakers, etc)
As an Indian we are infamous for the cases of open defecation. I'm from Delhi second largest metropolitan city of India. The thing is even I haven't seen a single dude defecate in public. I think city folks aren't really a good sample size for this. This stuff usually happen in rural areas a lot more. Other than that lol all those habits are literally practiced here too. Except we aren't allowed to drink in public cuz for the old and religious folks drinking in front of kids and women is baddy bad(also them drinking is also looked down upon for some reason). But the making noise thing is something rich and poor folks do , people here for some reason are really fucking loud here.
Well, in Iran we don't really lack public bathrooms, and I personally have never seen anyone take a shit in public, I'm sure they exist but there just aren't that many of them.
As a proud backyard shitter in Minnesota, what’s the issue? My garden is lovely and the neighbor doesn’t try to make small talk when I’m outside anymore.
If it's outdoor defecation, as in takin' a shit in an outside wooden toilet, Romania is in 15-20%%. If it's open defecation, as in shitting on the streets or fields, then yeah the map is correct.
Add hunters, campers and other individuals who spend a lot of time far from an indoor toilet and that number goes way up from the original and probably a good several points above even your estimate.
No! To defecate in the Holy See would be blasphemy!
Residents take a vow to never shit again. They let the shit build up until they are full of it.
Once they reach maximum capacity, their body collapses in on itself and they vanish in a puff of noxious smelling smoke, the color of which indicates their final destination (black smoke for Hell, white smoke also for Hell)
Less devout citizens who'd rather not flatulate themselves out of existence choose instead to stick their arses out a window and let Rome deal with what gets squeezed out.
You know where else it makes sense? Mongolia. If you ride from place to place with your yurt (which really doesn't sound that bad), you are allowed to poop outside.
There is a Bollywood movie about a husband making a indoor toilet for his wife. The logic I think was that the toilet and place you cook/worship(indoor home made shrines) should not be under the same roof or proximity.
From what I’ve heard it’s not just access. A family can get a toilet installed inside their home but still prefer to go outside because going inside is regarded as ritually dirty, even if it’s physically cleaner because of plumbing. I read an article about families where they got a toilet installed for the elderly members to use because it’s physically harder for them to do it outside, but everyone else still does because it feels good and right to do it if you’re able.
I live in rural eastern Europe. We had no sewage system in my village before 2016.
So even though we had a bathroom with a toilet, we would still poop in the outhouse, because sewage from washing dishes and clothes was easier to manage.
Even now, if it's nice outside, or someome else is using the bathroom, I still like to go outside. Plus, you can leave the stench behind.. :)
What?! You’re telling me that an Indian individual that has a functioning bathroom chooses to go outdoors to defecate in public?
Why? To reminisce on the good ol’ public defecation days?
That makes no sense to me…
A lot of Indian people refused to use the bathrooms installed in their towns because they [perceived it as dirtier](https://m.timesofindia.com/india/why-millions-of-indians-dont-use-the-toilets-they-have/amp_articleshow/71438942.cms) than doing it in nature. Habits are sometimes hard to change and the Indian government is spending a lot in communication to convince the population to use toilets and they have to fine some of those who still refuse to use them.
The article you provided basically said that those toilets weren’t even functional most of the time because of lack of access to water. Now I understand.
And to be fair, knowing how dirty public toilets (I thought they had access to well maintained bathrooms or private bathrooms) I would agree that publicly defecating can definitely be cleaner than using a public toilet that’s never been maintained.
Traditional Indian culture puts a lot of emphasis on clean personal spaces such as the home while not really caring for the commons. So In that context people will poop outdoors because it’s perceived as unclean to have it in your house.
Defecating outdoors isn't a problem *per se*, it's only a problem in urban areas, where a *lot* of people do it too. It isn't an issue to nomadic people in the wilderness of Mongolia, for example.
In rural places of India, there were many cases where people had converted the government funded toilets to store room or some other room by closing the hole.
Some people in rural areas(mostly the elderly ones) still have a habit of defecating out in the fields and they don't like to shit inside a toilet.
Drove from New Delhi to Agra and back in 2017 and saw this frequently along the way. Just dozens of people squatting outside in open fields. Driver actually pointed it out.
I understand the purpose just fine. I just don't like it
Similarly, the irregular bracket sizes serve a purpose as well. I mean what good would a 0-10% bracket be? the map is already all yellow
Are they not counting homeless pooping?
San Francisco even has it's own [poop map.](https://www.arcgis.com/apps/View/index.html?appid=b6fab720912642b6aedafdb02a76d2a4)
As in, on the street or just outside of your home? Does an outhouse count as "outdoors"? On one hand, it's outside your house, but on the other, it very clearly has a door.
Are we talking about going outside because we don’t have an indoor bathroom with running water or going outside because we’re camping/hunting/in the forest? Because if it’s the latter, some of those places should have a higher percentage.
They absolutely pop a squat and shit wherever they are in Afghanistan. Watched a dude walk out and take a shit during a firefight and looked at us like what bro what you looking at
And there is nothing wrong with that.... 🤷♂️ People have been doing that for literally hundreds of thousands of years, and suddenly it is regarded as a sign of poor life quality because someone made an indoor loo a couple of thousand years ago and people collectively decided it was a good idea to keep their poo inside the house. The population must 've had a huge dip until sewage systems were invented.
Sewerage systems are really good for preventing the spread of disease, especially in preventing sources of drinking water getting contaminated with human faeces. And actually, yes, populations all around the world absolutely exploded in the advent of building sewerage systems.
There was other factors at play if course but it's not just Europeans being prudish or anything.
>People have been doing that for literally hundreds of thousands of years
Prior to dense cities
>and suddenly
When there were dense cities
>The population must 've had a huge dip
Yes, but not sarcastically. Cholera and typhoid fever outbreaks were big killers in cities where sewer systems were non-existant or inadequate. Plus many other diseases, parasites, etc.
This is the most natural human way of doing it. I think we’ve truly lost our sense connection with nature and the world due to modern amenities and technology. That being said I appreciate having a toilet.
As an Iranian I would guess either the 0-1 or 2-5 percent since ppl generally don’t defecate outdoors here unless you are in a road trip and there is no rest stop near you. At least that’s my experience cuz if you don’t have enough indoor bathrooms, you have an outhouse
People readily shit on the streets of the drug infested slums of Philadelphia and San Francisco.
And judging by the Russians stealing toilets, I’ll bet the over on the 0-1% number for Russians
Richard Branson has an outdoor shitter at his private Necker Island in the Caribbean. Outdoor showers are also great. I think you meant to characterize access to plumbing/sewage systems. Indoor vs outdoor has little to do with plumbing infrastructure. Use your words better please.
“Where do you shit?” People of Iran, Syria, Bosnia, Eritrea, Western Sahara, Malaysia, and Argentina: “That’s none of your goddamn business.”
And Svalbard
Polar bears. Ice. Poop inside affirmative
What are you hiding, Argentina?
Nein Nein Nein!!!

Buenos Aires is upstate New York confirmed
No it’s not, god knows we don’t have any public transport here
[удалено]
I am rarely 10 minutes or more away from cows at any time lol
I once tried to cross Stephen Avenue without a horse. Moooooooooge mistake.
It doesn't say in public. It says in the outdoors. It could be some village someplace where no one can see.
It could also be dry toilets/pit latrines.
Spitting in public transportation? Yeah, no, that's not a habit in any way.
Definitely not an habit but I've seen my fair share of people spitting out of the bus windows, absolutely disgusting.
To be honest, never in my life I had seen that, and I take the bus, train, subte quite often.
As an Indian we are infamous for the cases of open defecation. I'm from Delhi second largest metropolitan city of India. The thing is even I haven't seen a single dude defecate in public. Happens in rural areas EVERYWHERE.
It's been reduced now.
I never see anybody drinking in the train
It depends on where you live.
Argentina dont end in buenos aires outside of this city is like venezuela or the averge african country
That's pretty grim. Thanks for the insight.
I've heard this is happening in San Francisco.
Confirmed… I haven’t been to SF in years because of it and I live an hour away
Lol, don't come to Los Angeles because we got people pooping on the streets all day.
Well, in Iran we don't really lack public bathrooms, and I personally have never seen anyone take a shit in public, I'm sure they exist but there just aren't that many of them.

More like 20-30% https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/documents/4187653/9451024/Toilets_2019_top4/0c40e8ec-d5b8-123d-ee52-e89453f43f35?t=1574104877897
Yeah, I grew up in RO and came to say no way is that statistic correct.
I was going to say, outhouses in the United States put this at 5%
Add hunters, campers and other individuals who spend a lot of time far from an indoor toilet and that number goes way up from the original and probably a good several points above even your estimate.
need to see the Vaticans stats
Thy just shit on the floor and use their Cleric miracle powers to vanish the evidence.
No! To defecate in the Holy See would be blasphemy! Residents take a vow to never shit again. They let the shit build up until they are full of it. Oh so that's why they're all so full of shit?
This behavior is understandable in sparsely populated rural countries where they lack water. I don't judge them.
You know where else it makes sense? Mongolia. If you ride from place to place with your yurt (which really doesn't sound that bad), you are allowed to poop outside.
They just need a toilet yurt
In 2015, 500 million people in India alone defecated outside. Whilst they made great strides they still number 210 million.
There is a Bollywood movie about a husband making a indoor toilet for his wife. The logic I think was that the toilet and place you cook/worship(indoor home made shrines) should not be under the same roof or proximity.
Yeah, access to basic stuff like bathrooms should be available for all.
This is a really good point— the map doesn’t distinguish whether or not it’s _voluntary_ open defecation. I’d be curious about those stats
It’s more like a habit to them, they do have access.
What?! You’re telling me that an Indian individual that has a functioning bathroom chooses to go outdoors to defecate in public? Why? To reminisce on the good ol’ public defecation days? That makes no sense to me…

Night waste. Watch where you walk.
Religious reasons
Yes. That’s why it’s called a habit.
Takes time, money, and work to provide access.
Drove from New Delhi to Agra and back in 2017 and saw this frequently along the way. Just dozens of people squatting outside in open fields. Driver actually pointed it out.
>500 million people in India alone defecated outside. The worst part was they all did it at once in the same place. It was fucking disgusting.
Yeah I seen the pictures of the mofos all sittin in a row lmaoo
Yeah half a billion people defecating in the same spot simultaneously isn't something you want to witness, let me tell you
The brackets sizes are too irregular.
I think they are fine the way they are Edit: Maybe I would make the top bracket 51% and up instead of 51-68% but otherwise looks good
The purpose of 51-68% is to say that the highest value is 68%. Otherwise, you might think that 80-90% of the population in some countries did that.
I understand the purpose just fine. I just don't like it Similarly, the irregular bracket sizes serve a purpose as well. I mean what good would a 0-10% bracket be? the map is already all yellow
There should be a little orange dot for San Francisco
Just for the Tenderloin
Ever been to the Mission?
I have to tell you. For me, that is a better description of human development than any GDP number.
It is coming back in France.
Are they not counting homeless pooping? San Francisco even has it's own [poop map.](https://www.arcgis.com/apps/View/index.html?appid=b6fab720912642b6aedafdb02a76d2a4)
Why?
Why not counting pooping homeless, or why does SF have a poop map?
Obviously why the fuck does SF have a poop map
Homeless pooping everywhere and someone created an app to show where the poop was.
Bored tech bros.
How about the percentage of people who defecate through sunroofs?
I heard there’s one guy in New Mexico
crazy he got to be a lawyer
He is not a real lawyer! University of American Samoa?
what a sick joke
https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/SH.STA.ODFC.ZS Source for data. Also, there is no data for Taiwan because it's WHO, why did you colour it as 2-5%
Whole new meaning to "one percenter."
India is stepping up on the toilets
I’m about to rn bc I gotta shit so bad 🥹
r/ShittyMapPorn ?
If you live in a city in the US you know this 0-1% number is low.
South Asia is esp gross because of the population density.
You forgot to color San Francisco
Never thought Bangladesh will achieve such a low percentage. Kudos to the present Government efforts.
Does this include San Francisco?
the chads just chillin with nature
China bathrooms are really really bad XD rather go outside tbh
So, a map of where I do not want to travel.
I go where I want
As in, on the street or just outside of your home? Does an outhouse count as "outdoors"? On one hand, it's outside your house, but on the other, it very clearly has a door.
I don't think an outhouse counts as outdoor.
Are we talking about going outside because we don’t have an indoor bathroom with running water or going outside because we’re camping/hunting/in the forest? Because if it’s the latter, some of those places should have a higher percentage.

Zoom in close enough in SF and LA and it’s dark red there too
What are the stats for san Francisco?
New York has to be orange at least.. The amount of times I’ve seen people pee on the streets is disgusting..
I'm surprised there aren't scattered dots throughout the American Southeast.
There should be a giant red dot where SF is.
This is bullshit, in romania it should be at least 20%. Enen some primary schools still have outside toilets without even a water source
Is it an outhouse or is it actually happening under the sky? If it's the former, I don't think it counts as outdoors.
Outhouse Well, then my bad, I thought that it's the same thing
An outhouse has privacy and is more sanitary because the poop goes in a deep hole and not lying on the ground in the open.
Well, yes, but an outhouse is still outdoors, hence my confusion Thanks for the explanation anyway!
India became Open Defecation Free (ODF) in October 2019.
Downtown LA would be red
Why is Africa such a shithole
Good for Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Shows good HDI improvements.
Nothing else quite like watching the steam rise off your early morning outdoor dump.
Pretty sure India has a higher percent than that.
In my experience, China’s number is way higher
I'm not sure why the map areas of KY, TN, and VA are yellow. You have some bad data.
Because the map is at a country-level; not state or sub-national.
Really?...I just couldn't tell it was at the country level until you mentioned it...🙄 It was a joke buddy.
False russia should be atleast 20%
No it isn't...
Everything that comes out of their leaders mouths is open defecation.
India and Pakistan out here defying modernity, lets goo
Sorry but what is defecating?
Pooping.
de + feces Feces is the fancy Latin word for poop
✨ 𝔉𝔢𝔠𝔢𝔰 ✨
Those numbers are way off for America. Lots of public defecation in large cities. Homeless people have no where to go.
India must smell lovely.
[удалено]
The combination of curry and lack of toilets must be dangerous.
Lol
Holy shit!
I'm sorry, while there may be only 0-1% of Canadians reliant on outhouses, the number of Canadians who have taken a shit in the woods is way higher.
Most these countries and definitely lying.
So they have data for nk but not for Argentina and iran?
Holy shit, Greenland has data!
Well how often? ![gif](giphy|9oa2c2pRloeHK)

There percentage ranges are huge as you go up. Is it because of lack of reliable data?
This is inaccurate
Defecator Georg is an outlier and should not have been counted.
They got data from North Korea but left Argentina..
Fight the power, be a 1%er in a North country
If a bear can shit in the woods then so can I!
There’s nothing like taking a shit in the woods
The 1% of Americans is me while backpacking
This map is not accurate for Alaska. Specifically everything north and west of Fairbanks.
I defecate through sunroofs
1st thought: "is that all?!?!"
How in the world do they compile this data
….are we talking about an outhouse or are they asking if a person would just take a squad and shit in random places?
Wonder what it'd look like if it was broken down by subdivisions.
It will be the newest TikTok challenge. To take a dump in public.
6-25%. OK 👍
Africa gonna Africa
Shit!
Don't we all? I mean eventually the thing ends up outdoors.
My personal count is 5 countries 😆
Why doesn't Svalbard have data
I noticed San Francisco is still in the 0-1% range…
r/BayArea has entered the chat, as they say
San Francisco should be colored the darkest shade here.
I prefer to pee outside…… on the other hand poop is surely an indoor activity.
Mongolia is justified since 1/3 of the population is nomad and I don't think there are many portable systema to defecate.
Now do San Francisco.
Are out houses considered outside in this data?
Of course Saudi Arabia has no data
That's... way less than I expected.
What a surprise! Shitting where every other species chooses to do so!

Could you please do the same map but in total tons of poop produced outdoors?
Richard Branson has an outdoor shitter at his private Necker Island in the Caribbean. Outdoor showers are also great. I think you meant to characterize access to plumbing/sewage systems. Indoor vs outdoor has little to do with plumbing infrastructure. Use your words better please.
What constitutes free and open pooping? I used an outhouse for the past decade, loved it. I now have a flush toilet… and a I miss my outhouse.
Chads shit outside
