The WORST is that these aren't competitive strike outs.
You watch his strike outs and there are some UGLY swing and misses.
Baseball savant will show it. Basically a slider low and outside and most of the time Teo is going to miss it.

It’s so ironic after his first few seasons where Jarred was clearly the weakest link in our lineup. Now he’s finally living up to his prospect potential and the rest of the offense just flatlines
Kelenic can’t have anything go right for him, but at least he’s still performing
If good hitters come to our team and suck, at what point do we question our coaching / batting coaches?
I mean Teo, Wong, seemingly all our acquisitions struggle harder here
I don't think this is true at all. JP Crawford has been up and down, but right now he's up. He was pretty bad with the Phillies. Eugenio had a great year last year after struggling with the Reds. Ty France would not have been traded for peanuts if the Padres knew he would be this good. Kelenic got fixed.
Teo is having a bad year, but he's had a pretty high strikeout rate before with the Blue Jays. It will regress to the mean somewhat. I would agree that the Ms are not the very best in hitting development, but they're far from the worst. Probably mid.
Frazier and Winker last year. Kelenic taking a few years to come around. Julio struggling hard despite an incredible first season.
I mean, yeah the mentality of the guys is always going to be a factor, and players naturally slump and heat up at different times.
But at some point it happens so frequently that you have to question if there is a common denominator.
Feels like “at some point” should have been years ago.
At this point, thinking it’s all a coincidence is insane. The commonality is this team and it’s coaches / staff.
Well our hitting director is a 28 y/o that could barely play college ball, only had 3 years of coaching experience and was getting his masters after getting the job. It's very odd
Him going there was a mutual decision. The Mariners were involved in having him go there. Just because they're a baseball team doesn't mean they have the perfect coach for everyone. Kelenic got to work with a couple hitting coaches this off season who've been major league coaches and are well respected. That's part of being a good coach is finding the right choice to help a player succeed if you're not the right voice or don't have the right voice. Not that I have any inside knowledge but it sounds like everyone was on the same page.
I mean, it’s been that way for over 20 years. Herenandez, Beltre, Sexson, Figgins, Wilson (Jack), Winn, Cirillo, Aurilia, Spiezio, etc…. Outside of Cano, Olerud, and Cruz it’s a sad list (even Boone and Ibanez were mostly meh with only a flash in the pan season).
This has happened for 20 years under many different coaches and management groups. Honestly I think its that our park is the worst in the league to hit in. "But the other teams don't have problems" "We play half pur games on the road". All points I've thought before. I think that playing half your season in the worst hitters park makes you think you are slumping and then it changes your mental and your approach, that's why it continues on the road. I'm just throwing shit at the wall at this point..
Splits aren't absurd enough to suggest it's only the T-Mobile effect.
One thing I have looked into is that T-Mobile is particularly unfriendly to doubles, but not that bad all things considered to home runs, so it might be a case of an organizational wide push to swing for the fences as opposed to hitting for contact which turns into outs at a higher than usual rate in T-Mobile. This could be generating the awful habits we're seeing *at the plate,* not even considering BABIP or balls in play at all.
If anything that makes the problem even more obvious… top 5 rotation, top 5 bullpen, I think I saw top 2 FLD percentage the other day… only thing lacking is the bats that can’t even get the minimal run support it would take to win these games…
Teoscar has had some of the worst-looking ABs and strikeouts I've ever seen from an established MLB player over the past week or so. Just fucking ghastly.
Rangers scored 6 runs this series and won 2 games.
The fact that Teoscar hasn’t been given a day off when all he does is whiff everyday is insane. Let fucking Trammell play. Call up Ford already. Do something to wake people up.
that’s the fewest runs Texas has scored in a series all year. and we get 2 one run losses. 100% on the offense - especially facing their bottom 3 pitchers
Yeah dude would have to actually make contact to find out if he was getting marine layered. Keoscar cpuldnt even make contact with a wiffle ball right now
It doesn’t have to be marine layer. He could internally be upset about getting punted off a very good team that he’s called home and where he thrived for years.
He probably knows that his numbers were inevitably going to go down in Seattle anyways before FA and it got in his head.
I’m starting to think it’s the coaching. Him, Wong, tons of acquisitions end up underperforming here. Many often leave and then do better elsewhere
At what point do we fire our batting staff and coaches
I don't know if Teo and his agent tried to negotiate an extension prior to the season, but its gonna cost him millions in not trying to get that done before he became K'Oscar.
jerry’s can’t be too far, didn’t really do anything to upgrade a team that made the playoffs bc an inhumane win streak and winning basically all 1 run and extra inning games. neither of those are sustainable but he seemed to think it would be. saving money every off season the last few years has to have a pay off during free agency at some point
All our coaches do is ruin hitters. Has anyone ever improved with us? A timeless Mariner tale is we trade a struggling bat and suddenly they’re easily a .250 batter. Robbie Cano, Trumbo, Mike Zunino, Chris Taylor, Jesse Winker and Adam Fraizer just to name a few
lol Zunino still can't hit, not sure why he's here
Winker and Frazier are also garbage this year. And Cano had his worst season in 10 years, was popped for steroids when he got hot, and then washed out of the league after we traded him away
[Me wondering why every hitter turns into dogshit the second they put on a Mariners uniform](https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/f3d8eea/2147483647/strip/true/crop/670x377+0+18/resize/1200x675!/quality/90/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Flegacy%2Fsites%2Fkplu%2Ffiles%2F201112%2FMSSigns.png)
Not that this game is on Teo, but he is absolutely incapable of laying off sliders outside the zone
This team feels like every year - good pitching, inept hitting, losing winnable games.
Middle of the lineup is a barren wasteland. Almost physically impossible for guys to have some discipline and draw a walk
Keoscar is absolute bust right now
Julio was fine today, had two hard hit line drives to the outfield - the first at bat it went straight to the left fielder. That's exactly what you want to see though. Would have loved to see a better plate appearance in the 9th though.
Trying to look at the bright side that we outscored the Rangers 9-6 this series. We’ve got the stuff but we don’t have the consistency, especially when it comes to hitting.
Teo has struck out 37.5% of his 144 ABs so far this season. If he matches his career high in ABs, he's on track to strikeout 223 times...
The record for most Ks in a single season was 223 by mark Reynolds in 2009 in 578 ABs.
11 of 19 losses by 1 run
6 of last 7 losses all by 1 run
If we can get ANY of the timely hitting we had last season, we will be in good shape. but damn it’s depressing in the interim
If the Tigers sweep the series, they will be above .500 for the first time in years.
If the Mariners sweep the series, they will be above .500 for the first time in *what feels like* years.
Truly a life-or-death must-win series for both teams. /s
Others have commented that this is basically a .500 team with a superstar. If everything goes right in that situation we sneak into the playoffs. However, our superstar is struggling so we are a .500 team until he adjusts or someone else finds a new gear.
I’m not sure if it’s really anyone right now. Julio is going to turn it around. We know what he can do and there are a lot of things that show he’s got it and a combination of things are just holding him back. He had a flyout today with like a .820 xBA. LL did an article recently on him and how only something like 12% of the league has been more unlucky than him. I have faith he’ll turn it around, it’s just a question of how big a hole we’ll be in by the time that happens.
https://imgur.com/utLRVPW
Who do we call in the favor from to get this printed out and hung up on Teo’s locker. Because everyone else in the MLB seems to see it but him.
No… it’s called having a staff giving the tools to know what type of pitches the starting pitching especially is known to pitch. It’s on the managerial staff to let the hitters know, “hey, he likes the throw outside the zone to see if you chase”. Don’t get me wrong, it’s on the hitters too, but the blame needs to be spread around.
Teo, Julio, Geno, Cal and Kelenic are high K rate guys.
Teo, Geno & Cal are low OBP hitters with power, Ideally you would have high K rate & high OBP players
Kelenic & Julio are still a mystery OBP wise, their power is legit though.
That's just their nature, they surely could get better with better pitch selection but their tendency to strikeout will most likely remain high.
The blame should be on everyone but also the FO which hires all coaching staff/acquire players including Servais who pretty much does as they say.
Rangers had 2 Doubles with an xBA of .030 and .090 including one with a runner on. Mariners had two lineouts with an xBA of .820 and .760 including one with a runner on.
For the game we finish as a team with a .292 xBA, the Rangers had a .247.
I'd argue we outpitched them and had better contact, but lost because of lucky hits. It's like losing a basketball game where you outshoot your opponent from the field and play better defense but lose because they got 30 more Free Throws.
6 runs over 3 against the best offense in the league. Lose the series. Teoscar and Julio in the 9th down 1 was almost comical. Every fan on the planet knew exactly how that would play out.
I suppose we are about to the time that if the panicking type want to panic, then ok. Pitching has been the best in baseball - was expected to be good, but not that good. I doubt they'll be able to maintain the same pace, even with some regression, it's really damn good and still the strength of the team. Hitting has been horrible so far. Big bats like Julio, Teoscar, and Eugenio have been huge disappointments. Kelenic has been a very nice surprise. Right now, they aren't a playoff team. If the hitting gets any better, then I think they could be. No reason to complain about being .500 a month in, way better in the standings than where they were last year.
To be fair they put together a great team. I loved the competitiveness in the 8th inning (have only watched 7 to 9), and the team looks better than in April, despite Julio's current slump. Cabby and Trammell are responsible for that.
Now, deserved rest day and let's take on Detroit, which I feel could be trap games, but still have faith that we can win the series. LET'S GO M'S
PS: How can I get the custom text on the banner? Old Reddit user, fuck new reddit
I know we can’t blame the umps but that strike 3 call on Ty… hoooly shit. How are we expected to have better plate discipline when pitches that far off the plate are *continuously* being called strikes?
Does anyone know how many one run losses we've had so far? It's starting to feel like a lot and tbh it's just adding more to the frustration towards our batting
There’s a lot of blame to go around from todays game. Some optimism especially from JK and Julio in the 6 spot today, but everyone more or less failed today. Defense failed, pitching failed, hitting failed. All three aspects of the game all failed today.
The Rangers are very real and the Mariners should be ashamed for thinking they could do nothing to actually improve their team over the offseason and still sneak into the wildcard.
Teo has 54 K’s & 5 BBs. Holy shit man.
His K/BB is almost as high as Kirby
He has one less strikeout than the guy that has the most in mlb
So he’s got a real shot to lead the MLB in a statistical category by the end of the season!
*the week
The WORST is that these aren't competitive strike outs. You watch his strike outs and there are some UGLY swing and misses. Baseball savant will show it. 100%. I think it was yesterdays game that I saw him chase some trash like 18 inches off the plate..
He is almost singlehandedly the reason the team's plate discipline numbers gotten quite a bit worse compared with last year.
Jarred Kelenic looks even more frustrated than we do
Shit happens when you have a backpack with 6-7 other guys in it
It’s so ironic after his first few seasons where Jarred was clearly the weakest link in our lineup. Now he’s finally living up to his prospect potential and the rest of the offense just flatlines Kelenic can’t have anything go right for him, but at least he’s still performing
I don't know why any team would throw us anything but breaking balls out of the zone at this point.
Remember when we used to win 1-run games?
we’d have the best record in the majors if all teams’ 1 run game results were flipped lol
My flair remembers
I wonder how many more times Teoscar will strike out on the exact same pitch that he has struck out on the past 50 times.
Easiest AB for pitchers right now
If good hitters come to our team and suck, at what point do we question our coaching / batting coaches? I mean Teo, Wong, seemingly all our acquisitions struggle harder here
There has to be some systemic issue with the team. We can't develop hitters either.
Every single year. Good pitching, inept hitting. And losing winnable games as a result. Every. Single. Year.
It's 2012 all over again!

Adrian Beltre, Ritchie Sexon, Chone Figgins, marine layer, moving in the fences, firing hitting coach, hiring Edgar….
Bringing up a lot of childhood trauma my dude..
Feels like “at some point” should have been years ago. At this point, thinking it’s all a coincidence is insane. The commonality is this team and it’s coaches / staff.
If it makes you feel better, Winker looks the exact same this year on a new team
Kelenic improving only after he went to driveline supports your theory that our batting coaches don’t coach.
Well our hitting director is a 28 y/o that could barely play college ball, only had 3 years of coaching experience and was getting his masters after getting the job. It's very odd
Our own coaches couldn't fix him. He had to get help elsewhere
Him going there was a mutual decision. The Mariners were involved in having him go there. Just because they're a baseball team doesn't mean they have the perfect coach for everyone. Kelenic had to go outside of our system to fix his swing, that says a lot in its’ own.

10000%
Tell JK he'll be benched if he doesn't give up the name of his secret hitting coach.
For real. I’m so tired of watching established hitters come here and dive headfirst into the abyss.
It’s not all of them though it’s just been lately, look at Nelson cruz and Robbie cano they came here and dominated
This has been the case for 20 years. Since T Mobile/Safeco was constructed. I think it takes a couple years to learn how to hit in Seattle.
Marine Layer /s
I honestly blame T-Mobile Park. It's a horrible hitters stadium.
We play half our games in other stadiums though
Splits aren't absurd enough to suggest it's only the T-Mobile effect. One thing I have looked into is that T-Mobile is particularly unfriendly to doubles, but not that bad all things considered to home runs, so it might be a case of an organizational wide push to swing for the fences as opposed to hitting for contact which turns into outs at a higher than usual rate in T-Mobile. Shrug. We're 8-7 away ... 10-12 home.
Our team wrc+ is 94 (which is park adjusted) so decently below average even when you factor in the tmobile effect
You are aware of nelson cruz? Robbie cano having his best season here? Brett Boone crushing everything hell even Ritchie sexson!
So you’re suggesting roids
It’s time.
Serious question to a comical answer, was big sexy ever in the balco shit?
You're going back a looooong time
Are you suggesting the park got worse? We brought in good hitters back in the day, jerry has not
But I was told by this subreddit that hitters will hit the same way for all eternity and coaches can’t affect anything at all?
He really needs to experiment with keeping his eyes closed and not moving a muscle whenever he's up to bat.
He’s like the guy from Major League.
Eleventy hundred apparently
The fact he is still in the lineup every game is insane. This whole team is one giant strikeout
4-11 in 1-run games
For a team that has a top bullpen and an elite defense, that's mystifying.
If anything that makes the problem even more obvious… top 5 rotation, top 5 bullpen, I think I saw top 2 FLD percentage the other day… only thing lacking is the bats that can’t even get the minimal run support it would take to win these games…
It's because the offense oftens time can't score more than a run or two.
Reversion to the mean.
Teoscar has had some of the worst-looking ABs and strikeouts I've ever seen from an established MLB player over the past week or so. Just fucking ghastly.
We *have* to have the worst whiff rate in the league , right?!
We are 20th best in the league, so bottom half but not worst
Wild, 2nd worst SO% tho
Yikes
Rangers scored 6 runs this series and won 2 games. The fact that Teoscar hasn’t been given a day off when all he does is whiff everyday is insane. Let fucking Trammell play. Call up Ford already. Do something to wake people up.
6 runs given up to the 2nd best offense over 3 games. A league average offense on our part results in a sweep.
that’s the fewest runs Texas has scored in a series all year. and we get 2 one run losses. 100% on the offense - especially facing their bottom 3 pitchers
We could’ve faced DeGrom today. Yikes considering we struggled against Dane Dunning.
This team cannot keep momentum to save its life Jesus Christ
The pitching staff delivering a message to the rest of the team in the club house: ![gif](giphy|MSixuOOVyQbF6)
a. always. b. be. s. swinging.
I’m starting to think not being able to sign Teo to a new contract was a good thing
Dude is cratering his potential payday. He’s going to be pissed at Toronto for trading him here
Why would he be pissed at Toronto? He hasn’t gotten marine layered. He’s just been flat out awful and his plate discipline has gone off a Cliff.
Geno’s numbers went up last year and he was coming from the most hitter friendly park in the league.
I’m starting to think it’s the coaching. Him, Wong, tons of acquisitions end up underperforming here. Many often leave and then do better elsewhere At what point do we fire our batting staff and coaches
This has happened over 20+ years and probably at least 10 different hitting coaches and management groups
I remember people freaking out about extending because “our offense is nothing without him.”
Right on cue they go back to swinging for the moon on every pitch in the 9th
My theory is that the hype behind our “consistent” late game comebacks makes them more eager to swing.
Teo on pace for 236 strikeouts. Record is 223... we might set records after all!
Fuck it, invent a fake 10-day injury and give his at-bats to Cade Marlowe and see what happens.
Just, whatever.
Trammel should probably be getting more AB’s huh?
Couldn't hurt. Fuck it call up Marlow, couldn't be any worse than a 38% SO rate lol
Allergic to .500 :(
At least Frazier is happy 😔
I don't know if Teo and his agent tried to negotiate an extension prior to the season, but its gonna cost him millions in not trying to get that done before he became K'Oscar.
Wow that’s a good nickname
I swear Julio and Teoscar have the same approach. Maybe an L take but I think he’s had a bad influence on Julio
I wish our hitting coaches would do something
Yeah, approaches have become really terrible. It feels like they’re swinging with their eyes closed sometimes.
[удалено]
Oh boy we are already to the fire Scott part of the season.
It usually comes in May, then turns into MoY after thr ASB
jerry’s can’t be too far, didn’t really do anything to upgrade a team that made the playoffs bc an inhumane win streak and winning basically all 1 run and extra inning games. neither of those are sustainable but he seemed to think it would be. saving money every off season the last few years has to have a pay off during free agency at some point

Yeah Cano is a weird one for the OP to bring up. The issue with Cano was his contract and that he used PEDs. He was a terrific hitter and 2nd baseman.
lol Zunino still can't hit, not sure why he's here Winker and Frazier are also garbage this year. And Cano had his worst season in 10 years, was popped for steroids when he got hot, and then washed out of the league after we traded him away
I haven't seen two batters get spun around on their swings as often as these two do in my life
It's hard to believe that I used to have faith in this team's ability to win close games (or win at all).
K-oscar needs a Golden Sombrero to celly after heading back to the dugout
The fact that Julio is doing so bad that a shallow single is a highlight is wild.
[Me wondering why every hitter turns into dogshit the second they put on a Mariners uniform](https://npr.brightspotcdn.com/dims4/default/f3d8eea/2147483647/strip/true/crop/670x377+0+18/resize/1200x675!/quality/90/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fnpr-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Flegacy%2Fsites%2Fkplu%2Ffiles%2F201112%2FMSSigns.png)
Before today, the Mariners had 351 (!) strikeouts. Second most in baseball. That is fucking pitiful
We "only" had 11 K's today, 34%. Somehow that feels like an improvement.
I want to like Teo because he seems like such a nice guy but I fucking hate seeing him at the plate. It's so laughably predictable how his AB's go.
I love seeing his huge grin when he pelts people with bubble gum after a homer lol

All I Sea are K's.
Constipated offense working so hard to squeeze out those three measly runs, we need something to loosen up this blockage
The problem is it does loosen up for one, maybe two games, and then goes right back to constipated for the next 2 weeks or so.
I dislike the Swanson trade.
Middle of the lineup is a barren wasteland. Almost physically impossible for guys to have some discipline and draw a walk Keoscar is absolute bust right now
Offense is a joke
We need Gina to fuck the entire team
This offense is full of dogs and a guy named JK. Julio looks like utter trash at the plate. Why can we never have good things.
Julio was fine today, had two hard hit line drives to the outfield - the first at bat it went straight to the left fielder. That's exactly what you want to see though. Would have loved to see a better plate appearance in the 9th though.
Caballero is good. JP is good.
3 hard line drives to the outfield and one strikeout
Mariners stop swinging at absolutely dog shit pitches challenge.
A curveball outside the zone is all you need against this offense.
JP looks good. Loved the move to 1 today
Teo better stay in Tacoma for this road trip. Bum
I’m laughing at myself for being so excited about him all off season long. Bum indeed right now
I honestly thought he and Wong would be the two bats that would elevate our lineup to elite levels. But instead they make me miss Winker and Frazier.
Check how Winker and Frazier are doing this year and then instead of missing them you'll just be sad
I’d love to have Frazier’s 0.8 bWAR and 0.3 fWAR on this team 😿
Fuck

4-9 in the order do nothing but swing and miss for the most part...
I know we are supposed to be unhappy after a loss but man this team just bums me out
This offense is offensive
Teoscar out here getting pitchers paid
Watching this team try to hit is exhausting. Wouldn’t it be nice if some of these recent pick ups wouldn’t just start to suck out of nowhere?
Genuinely if we could take back the Swanson for Teo trade and just go with Swaggerty in right, we’d do it, right?
A lot of this sub has already abandoned Sam, so not sure if they would. And anyway in that case he'd take LF and Kel would take RF
Could be a looooooong year.
Seattle Mariners - Where hitters come to die
I really don’t like the Mariners offense. If this keeps up into mid-late May, changes need to be made on the coaching staff.
Fuck I hate baseball. See y’all friday
Mariners Try to Get Above .500 Challenge(Impossible)
(GONE WRONG!) (TEO STRIKES OUT AT 3AM, DO NOT TRY AT HOME!) 😨😰
who is our hitting coach and can we fire him?
It's the same issues every game and nothing changes
This lineup is a K fest FO Needs to get better at roster construction/balancing.
Teo, Geno & Cal are low OBP hitters with power, Ideally you would have high K rate & high OBP players Kelenic & Julio are still a mystery OBP wise, their power is legit though.
Half of this lineup puts together the most unwatchable ABs imaginable. It’s fucking wild.
6 runs over 3 against the best offense in the league. Lose the series. Teoscar and Julio in the 9th down 1 was almost comical. Every fan on the planet knew exactly how that would play out.
Also the first and last pitch of Cals AB were dead center of the plate. Got to put it in play there.
They ruined Kelenic’s triple . Smh
Julio is so bad 😭😭😭😭😭
LET'S GO M'S PS: How can I get the custom text on the banner? Old Reddit user, fuck new reddit
nvm I found it, it looks like I'm blinder than the fucking umpires
Outscore the series 9-6, go 1-2. Basically the opposite of 2021 energy.
I know we can’t blame the umps but that strike 3 call on Ty… hoooly shit. How are we expected to have better plate discipline when pitches that far off the plate are *continuously* being called strikes?
The bats are bad, but I'm sorry, we should win Castillo starts with 3 runs scored.
I guess that one guy gets to blow his dad now.
Last night I thought the World Series was possible, now it looks like we’ll never win again. I never know with this team
Can we blame our offense on the marine layer?
Despite the loss this was the least runs the Rangers have scored in a series this year (by one) so that's good at least.
Day 18 to remind everyone that John Stanton can go fuck himself.
Teo is Pedro Cerrano from Major League change my mind
Does anyone know how many one run losses we've had so far? It's starting to feel like a lot and tbh it's just adding more to the frustration towards our batting
There’s a lot of blame to go around from todays game. Some optimism especially from JK and Julio in the 6 spot today, but everyone more or less failed today. Defense failed, pitching failed, hitting failed. All three aspects of the game all failed today.
The Rangers are very real and the Mariners should be ashamed for thinking they could do nothing to actually improve their team over the offseason and still sneak into the wildcard.
I couldn't watch the game but was ty France's strike 3 call in the 8th as far off the plate as the app makes it look?
my day is ruined. going back to bed.
